Naked: How to get NUDE with us (1/18)

WHAT HAPPENED?
The "all" that is burning was like a dream.
We gathered, cleaned, offered dana and took the Five Precepts with the abbot, ate lunch, meditated, then culminated the day with a chanting of the Patthana ("Conditional Relations"), and a Q&A period with the Sayadaw explaining that all things (composites) are "empty," which is to say utterly impersonal. This, however, is only true for one who knows and sees. One can directly see all manner of physical and psychological (material and mental phenomena) particles, kalapas and cittas and see that they are not "self" just as the historical Buddha saw. But why would anyone want to see such a thing?

This is "awakening" from the illusion of the suffering we identify as we remain tenaciously attached to the Five Aggregates clung to as self. What, then, if we were to let go? Of course, we do not have the power to let go. Form will not let go of form, feelings will not give up feeling, perceptions will not stop perceiving, mental formations will not give up fabricating our reality, and consciousness will not stop processing stimuli and data from the outside world.

So we can get or stay dressed?
And so long as the illusion lasts that these five heaps take all of this to be the work of a soul or self (attaatmanjiva), the possessions of a self (I, me, and mine), just so long will suffering continue and get worse. To be done with it, to lay the burden down, we must bring about calm and focus -- sustained attention to see things as they really are. When that is seen, letting go happens by itself. A woman clutches a rope. How long will it take her to let go in horror and disgust when she realizes it is a venomous snake?

Just so, the aggregates cling to the aggregates (and all that they feel belong to this imaginary "self" or "soul" or "ego" they are constantly constructing). How long will it take to let go when they realize that all of this has been impersonal, impossible to satisfy (because things can never offer fulfillment), and radically impermanent (arising, turning, and hurtling toward destruction)? In an instant of seeing, one clings no more. Therefore, to get there, let us let the mind/heart settle into stillness, develop clear-seeing (vipassana), and awaken to direct insight of the Truth. The Truth will set us free.

Is it KARMA or payback?

"Payback" is your act, not karma's results.
Not every bad thing that happens to a person right after doing a bad thing is the karmic-result of THAT bad thing. Things take time to incubate and produce their results (vipaka and phala). It would be very unusual for an act (deed) to be so weighty as to produce an immediate result such as the Beatles would have called "instant karma." In any case, the result of an action is not called "karma." Results are called vipaka (resultants) and phala (fruti). Doing something unpleasant to someone who did you first is called revenge, and it is your unskillful karma. Their karma has not yet ripened to produce its result. Therefore, there is no need to attack people. This will only be harmful to you. They'll get theirs. Trust the impersonal law of causes and effects, of deeds producing appropriate results. It's universal.

KARMA (Sanskrit, Pāli kamma) "intentional action," correctly speaking denotes the wholesome and unwholesome volitions (kusala- and akusala-cetanā) and their concomitant mental factors, causing rebirth and shaping the destiny of beings.
  • Cetanā is the intention, motivation, underly motive, the volition behind an action; this is what determines if it skillful, neutral, or unskillful more than the action itself seen objectively. It is the subjective input, which is visible to those who develop spiritual sight (dibba cakkhu).
These karmical volitions (kamma cetanā) become manifest as wholesome or unwholesome actions by body (kāya-kamma), speech (vacī-kamma), mind (mano-kamma).

Thus, the Buddhist term "karma" by no means signifies the RESULTS of actions and certainly not the FATE or DESTINY of beings or whole nations (so-called wholesale or mass-karma), misconceptions which, through the influence of Theosophy, have become widely spread in the West.

"Volition (cetanā), O meditators, is what I call action (cetanāham bhikkhave kammam vadāmi), for through volition one performs the action by body, speech, or mind.

There is karma ("action"), O meditators, that ripens in hell.... Karma that ripens in the animal world.... Karma that ripens in the world of humans.... Karma that ripens in the heavenly worlds....

Threefold, however, is the fruit of karma:
  1. ripening during the lifetime (dittha-dhamma-vedanīya-kamma),
  2. ripening in the next birth (upapajja-vedanīya-kamma),
  3. ripening in subsequent births (aparāpariya-vedanīya kamma)...." (A.VI.63).
The three conditions or roots (mūla) of unwholesome karma (actions) are greed, hatred, and delusion (lobha, dosa, moha).

Those of wholesome karma are:
  1. unselfishness (alobha),
  2. hatelessness (adosa = mettā, goodwill),
  3. nondelusion (amoha = paññā, knowledge).
"Greed, O meditators, is a condition for the arising of [unskillful] karma; hatred is a condition for the arising of karma; delusion is a condition for the arising of karma...." (A.III.112, A.III.34, A.III.147).

"Unwholesome actions are of three kinds: conditioned by:
  1. greed,
  2. hate,
  3. delusion.
"Killing... stealing... sexual misconduct... lying... slandering... rude speech... foolish babble, if practiced, carried on, and frequently cultivated, leads to rebirth in hells, or among animals, or among ghosts" (A.VIII.40). More

Too cold, Wim Hof? Eli from Russia

The mysterious sounds of Lake Baikal talking - Climbing ice mountain the American way

BRUTAL COLD resistance race in Russia
(Eli from Russia) March 8, 2025: YAROSLAVL OBLAST. "ICEMAN RUSSIA" is a cold resistance competition that includes weightlifting, running, and swimming in ice water. In Russia, a cold-resistant person is called a "walrus." These people rub snow on their bodies, dive in ice holes, swim short or long distances in icy water. This is why they’re compared to animals that are well adapted to cold weather and accustomed to swimming in freezing water. Swimming in ice water is considered the mastery of cold resistance, so I decided to try it!

Impossible: man flies off building (video)

Video Shorts; Base Jumping X Team Wannabees, Wisdom Quarterly

It's fun to watch in first class (of a car)
There's an extreme sport called "base jumping," taking a parachute in hand and throwing it into the wind when jumping off things -- buildings, cliffs, any platform will do really. What becomes possible when the wings/glider or flexible parachute can be maneuvered and aimed at landing spots? Here one daredevil goes from sky to rooftop of a skyscraper on the beach, probably a resort hotel, where he's not welcome by its security agent posted their to guard some VIP or other. They tell him to get off, but rather than the steps or elevator, he decides to jump off the edge. They helplessly run after him and watch him commit suicide, only he has other plans. A backflip into the wind then the descent of a raptor, skimming the surf and softly alighting on the sand. Success! How in the world it was filmed, we have to wonder. AI-controlled GoPro? How did the cam know to turn around for the backflip? No wonder China and TikTok will one day rule the world.

Watching this clip on a car video screen, I may want to parachute to the ground.
When do those George Jetson flying cars get here already? They exist. Let's go. Sky tickets!

Sir David Attenborough: Frozen Planet II

VIDEO: Christopher Stevens reviews the weekend's TV: The only way to get closer to a wolf...is to be eaten by one. Sir David Attenborough's Frozen Planet II reveals new behavior and animal secrets that naturalists might never uncover by watching through binoculars in the wild. The photography is spectacular, sophisticated, and is vivid and spectacular.
Sir David Attenborough describes nature rather than watch Ray Mears on one of his Boy Scout nature treks. It’s nonsense to suggest that the spectacular ultra-high-definition video sequences in Frozen Planet II (BBC1) are just pretty pictures. The photography is so vivid, and the filming techniques are so sophisticated, that every segment reveals new behavior — animal secrets that naturalists might never uncover by watching through binoculars in the wild, the Ray Mears way.

Pain better tolerated with cursing

Tiffany Cherry (WiredPRNews.com, 7/13/09)
A new study suggests that swearing makes it easier to bear pain.

As reported by LiveScience.com, researchers found after testing 64 volunteer subjects that muttering curse words helped increase their tolerance for pain. Richard Stephens with England based Keele University, who is one of the study’s authors, is quoted in the report as stating of the results:

“Swearing has been around for centuries and is an almost universal human linguistic phenomenon…It taps into emotional brain centers and appears to arise in the right brain, whereas most language production occurs in the left cerebral hemisphere of the brain.”

Researchers reportedly attribute the increased tolerance to an initiation of a fight or flight response in humans. More about the study may be found in the August 5 publication of the NeuroReport journal. Source
