(Cecil Travels) I crossed the border between San Diego (Alta California, US) and Tijuana (the largest city in Baja California, MX, often affectionately referred to as TJ) to see if all the terrifying tales of drug cartels, MS-13 gang members, prostitutes, donkeys, cunning dealers, clueless mules, underage drunken American partying, kidnappings, and human trafficking were true. Biden is signing an executive order today that would temporarily shut down the U.S.-Mexico border after asylum requests made by migrants [at any entry point, not just official crossings] surpass 2,500 a day, and Mexico's cooperation will be key in enforcing the measure.

Mexicans voted for a new president Sunday (June 2) in a contest dominated by women -- a historic first. US media coverage has all been overshadowed by violence, portraying the North American nation (yes, Mexico is part of N. America) as a crime-plagued Latin American nation.

• Why color Mexico as "other," as Mesoamerican, Latin American, or anything other than American? The US cannot afford to have a successful nation anywhere else in the Americas, except for Canada, or it would undermine our WASPy superiority complex as disaster capitalists and war profiteers. The CIA did not allow any political leader to succeed anywhere below our southern border, so why would the powers that be do it differently now?

Thousands of troops were deployed to protect voters, following a particularly bloody electoral process that has seen more than two dozen aspiring local politicians murdered.

Two people were reported killed on election day after attacks on polling stations to steal ballot papers.

Ruling party candidate Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, a former Mexico City mayor and a climate scientist by training, had a 17 percentage point lead over her main opposition rival Xochitl Galvez in opinion polls ahead of the vote.

"It's a historic day. I feel very happy," Ms. Sheinbaum, 61, said as she left her home.

After casting her ballot, the presidential frontrunner revealed that she had not voted for herself but for a 93-year-old veteran leftist, Ifigenia Martinez, in recognition of her struggle.

"Long live democracy!" Sheinbaum declared.

Galvez, a 61-year-old outspoken senator and businesswoman with Indigenous roots, said after voting that she expected "huge participation" in the election.

"What I would like most is that no Mexican had to go abroad to look for opportunities," she added.

The only man running, centrist Jorge Alvarez Maynez, was trailing far behind in polling.

It means that, barring a huge surprise, a woman is almost certain to break the highest political glass ceiling in Mexico, where around 10 females are murdered every day, unlike the US where the number is higher but not spoken of. More

"Backward" Mexico is more progressive than the US of A? Who'da thunk it? That is not to say that Pres. Kamala would be an advancement. We'd rather see Pres. Jill Stein or the long-awaited Pres. Andrew D. Basiago. The last thing we need is the same-old, same-old. But in ancient Rome, only Patricians could run for Senate. Plebians, who were the vast majority of the population, could not. The proletariat rose up and demanded change, which they got. But when they got it, they didn't vote in any Plebes. It didn't feel right. Their minds were colonized, you see? What a "senator" looks like or should look like was already drilled into their heads. Until they cleared that, until they decolonized their minds, did they make any progress. "Fix your head, and your butt will follow," the wise have been known to say. So welcome a new boss, different from the old boss. And incrementally we may make some progress eventually. Viva Mexico!

On Sunday, Mexicans will go to the polls to vote on more than 20,000 elected positions in the largest election in a generation.

This year’s vote will also likely yield the country’s first woman president — former Mexico City Mayor (Jewish candidate) Claudia Sheinbaum or Senator (Indigenous candidate) Xóchitl Gálvez.

As elections experts and democracy professionals, we are watching this historic democratic exercise with excitement — and concern. Mexico’s electoral machinery is struggling in the face of violence and threats.

• The country Mexico is not actually called "Mexico" any more than the USA is called "America." It's what people call it, but it isn't its name. It is called the United Mexican States and has been for a long time, long before its merger with the USA was planned as part of the Amero Union.

We are a nation with a very long history.

The quality of the Mexican vote matters to the United States because the challenges our ally and biggest trading partner faces — northward migration, economic development, and narcotrafficking — are our challenges too.

This electoral cycle in Mexico is already the most violent in recent memory. In the seven months from September to May 2, 2024, 560 victims suffered lethal and nonlethal electoral violence; there have been at least 195 election-related killings, including at least 34 candidates.
