What is directly-perceived light? It may be kalapas, the smallest units of materiality (rupa, form)

It is possible to directly perceive light

In Buddhism, āloka-saññā means the "perception of light." A recurring Pali language canon passage reads:

"Here the meditator contemplates the perception of light, fixes mind on the perception of the day, as at daytime so by night, and as at nighttime so by day. In this way, with a mind clear and unclouded, one develops a stage of mind that is full of brightness."

That is, mind becomes full of the perception of light.

This perception is one of the methods for overcoming drowsiness in meditation recommended by the Buddha to the chief male disciple "foremost in psychic powers," Mahā Moggallāna (A.VII. 58). [He may have said the same to the chief female disciple declared "foremost in psychic powers," Uppalavanna Theri.]

According to DN 33, this method is conducive to the development of "knowledge and vision." (See "purification," visuddhi). And it is said to be helpful for the attainment of the psychic "divine eye." (See abhiññā). Light can also be the direct subject of meditation as a kasina (a disk or special meditation object).

Buddhism has its own physics? Oh, yes. It is called the "Doctrine in Ultimate Terms" or Abhidhamma pitaka. Why? In Buddhism, there is conventional reality as distinct from ultimate reality. In one world or perspective, there are things and persons. In another, there are only ultimate mind and matter, nama and rupa ("name and form") or the ultimate constituents of things, namely cittas ("mind-moments") and kalapas ("particles").

Curing cancer with (banned) Rife technology

The Reasonable Persons Guide to Strange Ideas next examines one of the most astounding claims on the Net.

Overview of Claims

Some claim that Dr. Royal Raymond Rife (1) developed a super microscope, (2) was able to see live viruses, (3) which gave off their own unique light [frequencies], by which he found that (4) all the forms of human cancer he studied were caused by the same viral infection (BX virus), and that (5) these cancer viruses will shatter both on microscope slides and in living animals when exposed to certain frequencies. (6) His 1934 Rife Ray Equipment at the University of Southern California cured 14 helpless cancer cases after three months and eventually 100% of the 16 cures attempted. (7) Rife worked with top people in medicine at his time including doctors at the Mayo Clinic. (8) Rife won scientific awards. (9) Drug companies and electron microscope competition suppressed him and all others who succeeded in duplicating his work.

Was Rife a scam artist? Or did he cure cancer?

No one doubts that Royal Raymond Rife was a real individual who did indeed create several unique microscopes. Some very fine pictures of his scopes exist today. The one below is the Universal Microscope, one of five scopes purported to have been capable of seeing living viruses.

One microscope expert reading this article wrote that Baush and Lomb offered Rife "a ton of money" in the late 1930s. But B&L ran because the microscope was a fraud. So far my request for documentation of this claim has gone unanswered as has the question: If no Rife scope worked, how does one explain the nice photos of Tetanus spores and Typhoid Bacillus taken by Rife's Universal Microscope published in the 1944 Smithsonian Report?

Buddhism and Quantum Physics

EAST MEETS WEST
What is reality? The mindsets of the modern world provide and oscillate between four answers:

1. The traditional Abrahamic (Jewish, Islamic, and Christian) religions speak about a creator that holds the world together. It represents the fundamental reality. If it were separated from the world for even a moment, the world would disappear immediately. The world can only exist because this creator is maintaining and guarding it. This mindset is so fundamental that even many modern scientists cannot deviate from it. The laws of nature and elementary particles now supersede the role of the creator.
2. René Descartes takes into consideration a second mindset, wherein the subject or a subjective model of thought is fundamental. Everything else is only derived from it.
3. According to a holistic mindset, the fundamental reality should consist of both subject and object. Everything should be one. Everything should be connected with everything else.
4. A very modern mindset neglects reality. It could be called instrumentalism. According to this way of thinking, concepts do not reflect a single reality in any one way. Concepts have nothing to do with reality but only with information.

Buddhism refuses these four concepts of reality. It was therefore confronted with the critical reproach of being nihilistic.

If there is neither a creator, nor laws of nature, nor a permanent object, nor an absolute subject, nor in both, nor none, what is there to believe in? What remains that can be considered a fundamental reality?

The answer is simple. It is so simple that we barely consider it being a philosophical statement: Things depend on other things. A "thing" is dependent on its cause(s). There is no effect without a cause and no cause without an effect. There is, for instance,

• no fire without fuel
• no action without an actor
• no actor without action.

Things are dependent on other things. They are neither identical with each other, nor do they break up into objective and subjective parts. This Buddhist concept of reality [known as Dependent Origination] is often met with disapproval and considered incomprehensible. But there are modern modes of thought with points of contact.

For example, there is a discussion in quantum physics about fundamental reality. What things are fundamental in quantum physics?

• particles
• waves
• field of force
• law of nature
• mindsets
• information

Quantum physics came to express itself by certain key concepts: complementarity, interaction, and entanglement. According to these, there are no independent but only complementary quantum objects. They are at the same time both waves and particles. Quantum objects interact with others, and they show evidence of entanglement even when they are separated by great distances.

Without being observed philosophically, quantum physics has created a physical concept of reality. According to that concept the fundamental reality is an interaction of systems that interacts with other systems and with its own components.

This physical concept of reality does not agree on the four aforementioned approaches. If the fundamental reality consists of dependent systems, then its basics can neither be independent and objective laws of nature nor independent subjective modes of thought. The fundamental reality cannot be a mystic entity nor can it consist of information only.

The concepts of reality in Buddhism surprisingly parallel quantum physics.
