Muslim month of Ramadan begins (Islam)
![]() |

- Why don't Muslims ever depict the Prophet? (Everybody Draw Mohammed Day); Buddhism began with the same rule, and Judaism continues to avoid direct mention of their tribal god or the making of graven images and idols. When Buddhism began, the Buddha (the "Awakened One") was referred to with symbols of a Bodhi tree, lotus flower, or an empty chair (aniconism), and the first human depictions were from his hometown (outside of India that had the same prohibition on anthropomorphic images), that being the Greco-Buddhist art of Gandhara (modern Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sakastan, Scythia).

![]() |
| La.Vie.de.Mahomet (1699) |
In this deep dive into ancient history and mythology, we explore the connections between Allah (Islam's supreme being), the moon god Nanna, the Canaanite (early Jewish) god Baal, and the Anunnaki (Sumerian ET "gods").
From celestial worship to sacred symbols, the evolution of divine identities may be traced even today. Discover how ancient myths shaped modern beliefs and uncover the threads linking the heavens, the earth, and the gods who ruled (or claimed to rule) them.

Why listen to a Muslim or learn about Islam?
Salam alaykum. A Buddhist website giving Islam a forum? But they're monotheistic Abrahamic fanatics!
Wisdom Quarterly is interested in all faiths and practices, explanations and views, particularly those we disagree with, so we listen without necessarily expecting to be listened to in return. Why?
In the future, when peace reigns in the world, one can only hope that it will not be because we all agree but rather because we have all learned to respect, enjoy, and celebrate differences.
The Buddha originated the famous simile of the elephant, which like the Aesop Fables (rooted in the Jataka) gained so much popularity people use it without realizing who came up with it: A group of blind men are asked what an elephant looks like. So depending on their sense of touch, they feel a portion of the elephant and extrapolate a global view. The one who feels a leg describes the elephant as a column. The one who feels an ear describes the elephant as a supple palm. The one who feels the trunk describes the elephant as a snake, and so on. Each, going on limited information, proceeds to form a wrong view about the whole.
All of their views combined might get us somewhere, but instead they are with each other: "How can you say a supple palm when this is a post?" "How can you say post, when this is a snake?" and so on.
One of the best classes to take in college is comparative religion. If they were presented fairly and accurately, we might be drawn to the best religion for us, rather than all being baptized by fire into Scientism. Lots of students would surely become agnostics, and a few might become militant atheists and even fewer pantheists and animists. Who's right?
This is a question of epistemology (the philosophy of determining what qualifies as proof and knowledge), which is very ontological (concerned with being). Go, Socrates! The unexamined life is not worth living, which seems to be what our Western hedonism (pleasure above everything else) seems to really be about. In any case, we already hear the anti-Islam view by its most articulate critic on YouTube.

Now a non-monastic, non-meditator (though perhaps one who prays to the great Allah until samadhi), and presumably a non-Buddhist Palestinian female in the USA has done the unthinkable: She has set herself on fire in Atlanta to bring attention to the plight of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank under the tyranny of US-sponsored Israel and Netanyahu's murderous, genocidal rightwing government.
Zionist Jewish Israel has been doing settler colonialism and genocide for a long time, killing medics, journalists, children and anyone else standing in the way of Israel's total conquest of the Middle East to devour states all around it and become the new world leader, imposing capitalism and phony-democracy on everyone around.

The establishment of a state of Israel prior to the coming of the Messiah, according to the Bible (Torah), is sinful and an act of rebellion against God.

Rabbi Weiss says Jews yearn to return to the "Promised Land" and pray to God to bring about that end day, but in the meantime, they are tasked with patiently waiting, serving God, being loyal citizens in any country they are living in, and upholding the Torah (Jewish law from Old Testament sources) in every land in which they live.
This interview was conducted by Dr. Safiyyah Ally at Reviving the Islamic Spirit Convention in Toronto, Canada, in December 2022.

Buddhism and God (cartoon)
Family Guy; Robot Chicken; Ven. Nyanaponika (Mr. Sigmund Feniger's Buddhism and the God-Idea), BuddhaNet via ATS; Dhr. Seven, Pat Macpherson, Ashley Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

| The Buddha, the man, proves we can. |
[COMMENTARY: Buddhism is nontheistic. It is not atheistic, though that is certainly the impression many get superficially. What's the difference? First, there is certainly not the great creator God we always hear about, who created everything and controls thing and decides who gets into hell and heaven and how you look and how much money you have. Nontheism means whether there is or isn't it doesn't matter as concerns enlightenment, liberation, awakening to ultimate truth. Theism and atheism are polemical positions for or against there being a God or gods. There are, conventionally speaking, many "gods" (devas). They are not God. There's a Maha Brahma, who is beyond gender so not a "He," conventionally speaking. And there are countless devas, "shining ones," from space, dimensions, realm, and on this planet with us. There are many kinds of beings. We have the potential to be reborn as devas so in that sense we are divine and will be reborn on levels corresponding to our karma, our deeds rooted in our understanding of reality, our VIEW. Right view leads to good outcomes, whereas wrong views mostly to miserable results.]
![]() |
| Isn't the Buddha God? No, no way. |
From a study of the sutras or discourses of the Buddha preserved in the Pali language canon, it will be seen on the one hand that the God-idea, the idea of a personal deity (a Brahma, YHVH/Yahweh, Jehovah, Allah), an actual "creator God " conceived as eternal and omnipotent, is incompatible with the Buddha's teachings.
![]() |
| Aha! I am thy God. Worship me, sheep! |
In the fabled "Garden of Eden," what must it have been like for the first man and woman, the Adam (Adama race) and the Eve, the second woman after Lilith?
![]() |
| We come from space |
God-belief, however, is placed in the same category as those morally destructive wrong views that deny the karmic results of our actions, assume a fortuitous origin of humans and nature, or teach absolute determinism (that everything is caused by karma or predetermined by fate, which is called fatalism).
![]() |
| Thou shalt not question Me! |
Theism, however, is regarded as a kind of karma-teaching insofar as it upholds the moral efficacy of actions -- the understanding that we do "reap as we sow."
Hence, a theist who leads a moral life may, like everyone else doing so, expect a favorable rebirth. One may possibly even be reborn in a heavenly world that resembles one's own conception of it (so religion is correct to that extent, except that no such world will actually be permanent). It will not be of eternal duration as he may have been promised by popular religions. Hell(s) are impermanent, too, though possibly of very long duration.
If, however, fanaticism induces one to persecute those who do not share one's beliefs, this will have grave karmic consequences for one's future destiny.
Fanatical attitudes, intolerance, and violence against others with different beliefs create unwholesome karma leading to moral degeneration and to unhappy rebirths.
![]() |
| Hi, I'm Shiva. I'll be one of your Gods. |
Among the fetters (samyojana) that bind one to the Round of Rebirth, theism is particularly subject to those of personality-belief, attachment to rites and rituals as if they could produce enlightenment, and craving for fine-material (rupa loka) existence or for rebirth in heavens of the Sensual Sphere (kama loka), as the case may be.

| "God? creates but you destroy? |
Through the centuries, Buddhist philosophers have formulated detailed arguments refuting the doctrine of a creator God. It should be of interest to compare these with the ways in which Western philosophers have refuted the theological proofs of the existence of God.
But for an earnest believer, the God-idea is more than a mere device for explaining external facts like the origin of the world. For a believer it is an article of faith that can bestow a strong feeling of certainty, not only as to God's existence somewhere out there, but as to God's consoling presence and closeness... More
