Thich Nhat Hanh: "To live, we must die every instant. We must perish again and again [like flickering individual stills run in a series of connected frames of a filmstrip, one passing away and the next appearing] in the storms that make life possible."

Thay (Thích Nhất Hạnh) was a Vietnamese Zen (Thiền) teacher who practiced Engaged Buddhism. He often spoke of mindfulness (Buddhist sati) without, to our knowledge, doing much to define or explain it in detail. He lived it. It is, after all, a practice of doing (karma) much more than a theory of being.

Thiền (Zen) Master Thích Thanh Từ (1924–2022) is credited for renovating Trúc Lâm in Vietnam. He was one of the most prominent and influential Thiền masters of the 20th and early 21st century. He was a disciple of Master Thích Thiện Hoa.

The most famous practitioner of modern Thiền Buddhism in the West was Thích Nhất Hạnh (1926–2022), who authored dozens of books and founded the Plum Village Monastery in France together with his colleague, Thiền Master Bhikkhuni (Nun) Chân Không.

Other influential Vietnamese teachers in the West include Thích Thiên-Ân, who taught philosophy at UCLA, said "We all shed salty tears and shed red blood; all is one," and founded a meditation center in Los Angeles, and Thích Thiện Tâm, the author of several books in English such as Buddhism of Wisdom & Faith: Pure Land Principles and Practice.

In recent years, the modernization of Thiền has taken a new global dimension, as Vietnamese Zen is becoming influenced by the teachings of influential overseas Vietnamese Buddhist leaders such as Thích Nhất Hạnh, who have adopted Thiền to Western needs, focusing on mindfulness.

As a result, Vietnamese Buddhists have also now begun to practice these modernized forms of Thiền [17]. More

What were "The Sixties"? They were a time of protest, peace activism, fighting the power for freedoms we take for granted today: free speech, civil rights, free love, racial equality, academic freedoms, fairness...

This country used to be about pretending to be all for "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." The Sixties tried to cash that check so said, "Well, let's have it, Old People! You've been promising these three since the time of the Puritans, and we have yet to see the country live up to its ideals."

The deception was, and it took the nation decades to figure this out, revealed: We have a right to pursue, not to catch. There's no happiness, just an endless search for it. We have to fight each other to even try to catch them. When we have a right at all, it is only to endlessly pursue. So secure some debt loans and make payments on this car and then another, on that house and then another, enter that relationship and then another...THEN you'll be happy.

Peace Class is a free, interactive online gathering to manifest inner peace and establish world peace. It is led by Mandy Kahn and takes place every Wednesday night at 6:00 pm (Pacific Time) via Zoom. ALL are welcome to attend.

The building of world peace is the establishing of inner peace. So our global contribution, as a participant in this peace circle, is profound.

Each class meeting includes a short talk that focuses on one aspect of the nature of peace, followed by journaling as a peace-building practice. This provides each participant the opportunity to develop a set of peace-building skills that may be used at any time.

Mandy Kahn is a peace advocate and poet, author of two collections of poems — Glenn Gould’s Chair and Math, Heaven, Time — both published by London-based press Eyewear.

Her work has been included in the Best American Poetry anthology series and in former Poet Laureate Ted Kooser’s syndicated column "American Life in Poetry."

Kahn is the writer-in-residence at the Philosophical Research Society, a center for spiritual discourse founded in 1934 by wisdom scholar Manly P. Hall.

She teaches for PRS with a weekly online class on the nature of peace and regularly presents peace-building concerts on the PRS grounds in Hollywood, which feature poetry, classical music, and immersive performances.

(The Shakespeare Prize is awarded annually to a poet or playwright based in Los Angeles County; other recipients include Tom Stoppard, Ray Bradbury and Poet Laureate Dana Gioia).
