Quantum computer chip breakthrough

Amazon’s quantum breakthrough that everyone missed
(Sabine Hossenfelder) While Microsoft’s Majorana quantum computing chip might have grabbed all the headlines earlier this year, Amazon appears to have quietly made some big progress in the quantum computing race. Their new Ocelot chip uses cat qubits to support a scalable architecture that reduces errors by up to 90%. What does that mean? Let’s take a look.

Israel wages war on six fronts (video)

Lebanon war rages, Iran hits back, Middle East Explodes in regional war, with Ben Norton
(BreakThrough News) Premiere in progress, started today (10/2/24) The Socialist Program. Israel is at war with Gaza, at war with the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and now Iran. Retaliation: More than 180 Iranian missiles struck Israel back on Tuesday. For the last year, Israel has carried out a non-stop genocidal killing spree on Gaza — a battle that is now part of a larger regional war in the Middle East.

Israel vs. Iran: Who has the military advantage? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
(Firstpost) Who has the edge if an all-out war breaks out between Israel and Iran? In terms of manpower and land forces, Iran has a numerical advantage. Iran also has a slight edge at sea. But the real war between Israel and Iran will be fought in the air. And Israel's air superiority is undeniable. But Iran also has a few tricks up its sleeve.

New eco-friendly battery is a big tech leap

Anthony Cuthbertson, The Independent, 2/26/24; Sheldon S., Seth Auberon (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
It's true. We're on the left yet we pretend coal-powered energy is any solution to pollution. Stop the corporations and polluters without falling for lies about carbon to fund a new capitalist market to trade "right to pollute credits." Electric cars, because of rare earth minerals and the way electricity are generated and their shorter lifespan and very expensive battery packs are far worse for environment and consumers.
.
Researchers have discovered how to massively boost the capacity and performance of an eco-friendly alternative to the batteries found in electric cars and smartphones.

The breakthrough is expected to accelerate the commercialization of organic electrode-based batterie, which are both cheaper and more environmentally friendly than standard lithium-ion batteries.

“The potential of organic electrodes in lithium-ion batteries is highlighted by their cost-effectiveness and natural abundance,” a paper detailing the research noted.

Now we can save the environment and Gaia!
“However, the dissolution of the active material in the electrolyte is a major obstacle to their use in lithium-ion batteries.”

A team from Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) and Hanyang University in South Korea figured out how to overcome the limitations associated with organic electrode materials, which have previously hampered their development and adoption.

Previously, such batteries were unable to keep more than 50 per cent of their capacity after just 20 charging cycles, but a new technique using diluted electrolytes allowed the battery to retain more than 91 per cent of its capacity after more than 1,000 charging cycles.

“This study represents a major step towards practical applications of organic electrode-based batteries,” said Professor Won-Jin Kwak at the School of Energy and Chemical Engineering at UNIST. More:

Is there enough antisemitism? (video)

to justify Anti-Defamation League's alarmists?
Bibi Netanyahu produces more antisemitism than anyone in the world, worse than Adi Hitler

We went to the ADL's Anti-Semitism Conference and saw Palestine activists compared to Neo-Nazis
(BreakThrough News) Jan. 25, 2023: Anti-Semitism is on the rise? That's what ADL alarmist propaganda says every chance it gets. It never gets better, it never stays the same, it only gets worse. But let's say that due to Israel's genocide on Palestinians, it is on the rise. What does the ADL focus on at their annual conference on antisemitism?

Thee Zionist Jews learnt a lot from us Nazees in Europe and now they rule Middle Eeeast
.
Changing the definition of "antisemitism" by expanding it to mean anti-Zionism, not being pro-Israel enough, not wanting to send weapons to Israel to threaten and attack its neighbors, and anyone who does not follow plans for their settler colonial project or tries to reveal Jewish influence on American, European, and Western lives. Palestinians and “oppressed minorities” are the ADL's biggest problem? That's what the conference, with many young (pre-college) and impressionable students in attendance by design,

BreakthroughNews's Kei Pritsker went to the ADL's conference where Palestinian activists were compared to Neo-Nazi murderers. Black Lives Matter? Not to the ADL, which wants to better align with white nationalists and train police to oppress other racial and ethnic minorities. Why not? It pays to be part of the problem rather than trying to be part of the solution. After all, anyone who thinks the system is working is likely working for the system. #breakthroughnews

Global Day of Protest: Free Palestine (11/17)

How war will end: Israel can kill but can’t win

Israeli forces raided Gaza’s al-Shifa Hospital, including the emergency department, the surgical department, and the maternity ward in their ongoing assault that has killed more than 11,000 Palestinians.

On Friday, Nov. 17, 2023, people all over the world are walking out, striking, and protesting Israel's genocide.
Brian Becker is joined by Layan Sima Fuleihan, a popular educator, organizer, the education director at The People’s Forum, and an editor at 1804 Books.

What are we protesting? State oppression and weapons sales

Loewenstein: Israel is testing NEW WEAPONS on Gaza as arms dealers PROFIT from Israeli War on
(Democracy Now!) Nov. 14, 2023: Worldwide protests calling for a ceasefire are drawing attention to the role of weapons manufacturers and distributors supplying machinery to Israel's assault on Gaza, with demonstrators blocking shipping tankers and entrances to weapons factories, and unionized workers refusing to handle military material over Israel's settler colonial war project.

There is "a growing public awareness and anger" about the global connection between Western powers (like the U.S.) and the Israeli military industry, says Antony Loewenstein, who has investigated how Israeli weaponry and surveillance technology are used on Palestinians and exported around the world.

"Israel is already, as we speak…live-testing new weapons in Gaza," says Loewenstein. He also discusses what he characterizes as the "intelligence" and "political" failures of the October 7th Hamas incursion.

Palestinians' 'right to defend themselves'?

(CNN) Oct. 24, 2023: The Palestinian Queen of Jordan Rania goes on CIA CNN Television with Christianne Amanpour to decry the "glaring double standard" in how the world treat Palestinians because of Jewish and Israeli nationalist propaganda throughout the world's media. Queen Rania: There's a "glaring double standard" in favor of Israel and against Palestinians. Queen Rania of Jordan talks to Christiane Amanpour about the world's reaction to Israel's War on Palestinians in the name of Hamas, Muslims, and the Arabs it hates. Is this apartheid? Yes, by international human rights organizations' own definition it is "apartheid." Is it genocide? Yes, by definition, it is "genocide" and "ethnic cleansing," and Israel is committing "war crimes" like "collective punishment" and "targeting hospitals, journalists, and civilians," by definitions that neither the Arab world nor Palestine made, but by the standards of the Geneva Conventions. There's a false symmetry here between an elite military (Israel) funded and backed by the world's largest military (USA) against what they are calling an "enemy" (all Palestinians) that does not have any military at all. #CNN #News

Journalists rip double standard: Do Palestinians have a "right to defend themselves"?
(BreakThrough News) Oct. 29, 2023: Journalists Eugene Puryear and Rania Khalek, hosts of Breakthrough News weekly show The Freedom Side, rip the double standards surrounding the demonization of Palestinian resistance, while Israel is glorified and given a pass to do whatever it deems fit [in consultation with the CIA, the Pentagon, the White House, and its greatest funder, the American military-industrial complex].

How to meditate when you can't "meditate" (2)

Dhr. Seven, Ananda M., Jen B. (Meditation Initiative); Ashley Wells (ed.), Wisdom Quarterly

1. Breathe
Let the breath help. Breathwork (pranayama, "breath control") is a great preliminary or preparatory practice.

"Doing" is not meditation, but it can indirectly bring about meditation. It can clear the mind, cause bliss, awaken the pineal gland/third eye to produce DMT and/or endorphins. HOW?
  • Inhale long and hold the breath. The mind suddenly stops. Exhale. Do it again. Hold it longer. While holding, there is no thinking. It is like applying the brakes on the Monkey Mind. Do three times, which gives a respite, then resume attention to normal breathing (anapanasati).
  • Breathe in to the count of 4, breathe out to the count of 6. Breathe in to the count of 5, breathe out to the count of 8. (Whatever the count, keep the approximate ratio between inhalations and exhalations). Do this pattern for a few minutes until calm overcomes you. (When excited we unconsciously hyperventilate shallow breaths and stay stressed out. This techniques calms the body, which in turn calms the mind).
  • If nothing is working, let's get heavy duty: bellow-breathing. Breathe in through the nose in a huff (with a sniffing nose), exhale through the mouth in a huff (with a ha noise). One-second in, immediately followed by one-second out (whole cycle takes two seconds). Use the belly like a bellows. Go faster. Keep this up until the endorphins flow or exhaustion sets in.
  • An excess of nervous energy can be worked off with yoga postures or soothing mindfulness of walking.
(Don't overdo it). We're just making an effort to calm body-and-mind. After one to three minutes, take a long, deep inhalation and completely let go. Bellow-breathing is like a fiery cleanse, expelling old stale air, flooding the body with rejuvenating oxygen and prana. Now relax. Bring full attention back to the nostril area as the body resumes natural breathing.

If worse comes to worse, pick up this popular book and read instead. How To Meditate...

2. Soothe the mind
If directly working with the mind is more appealing than working directly with the body, here's something to DO. Utilize a mantra ("thought instrument").
  • Group meditation is where we learn what to try.
  • Chant. Utter an extended "ohm" (om, aum) on each exhalation. Let each utterance grow longer. Repeat until the mind is calm.
  • Breathe in "bu," breathe out "dho." Repeat budho in sync with the natural breath until the mind is calm.
  • Turn the mantra "Om mani padme hum" into a japa (the repetition of a sacred sound). Repeat until the mind is calm.

Here's a BONUS from the Monroe Institute: a guided visualization to induce meditation

3. Binaural Beats

If doing is to much to do (taking too much effort), do this to yourself. Put on some headphones, and just listen.

Utilize binaural beats (acoustic phenomenon). When two different tones -- one in each ear -- are played, they combine in the brain to create an acoustic beat. It is not heard by the ears but by the brain making sense of the two frequencies.

Frequencies are measured in hertz (Hz). They combine to produce an otherwise inaudible but perceptible thing. The sound does the work to bring the mind into a coherent state, which is calm, concentration, and samadhi. We recommend binaural products by the Monroe Institute. There are many free neural oscillations on YouTube of varying quality that may induce calm and clarity:
4. Preparatory Practices

There are preliminary and preparatory practices that come down to us from the time of the Buddha and the first enlightened disciples (monastic "elders," theras and theris) to get one set for meditation to sprout and blossom into its fullness.
  • Find peace and quiet (withdrawal into temporary solitude).
  • Noise is the enemy of undistracted-attention (unflappable concentration), so if solitude is impossible, at least find silence. Put in some earplugs. Resort to the closet. Rest in the bathroom with a warm tub in the dark or by unscented candle.
  • Cultivate boundless loving-kindness (metta), which breaks down the barriers to meditation.
  • Recollection of the Buddha's qualities
  • Choose one of those qualities, such as arahan, and repeatedly recite or reflect on it.
  • Consult an expert teacher to learn the practical way of doing these things that in print remain theoretical.
  • The Dharma Meditation Initiative has two new handbooks being read on Thursday nights in Los Angeles. Come practice. It's free.
Dharma Meditation Initiative/MARC.ucla.edu
These things help meditation happen when just sitting (dzogchen) there isn't cutting it. It is like making the soil ready for cultivation (in the kammaṭṭhāna or "field of work") by adding amendments.

Make sure virtue (sila), which is the basis of everything else in Buddhism, is in place because this is the foundation of coherence, calm, collectedness, concentration (samadhi) of mind's power to "meditate."

After absorption ("meditation"), emerge, and take up insight-meditation practices to realize enlightenment in this very life.

Better Smiles: Rebuilding Teeth Naturally

Leeds.ac.uk

(August 22, 2011) Researchers at the University of Leeds have discovered a pain-free way of tackling dental decay that reverses the damage of acid attack and rebuilds teeth as new. The pioneering treatment promises to transform the approach to filling teeth forever.

Tooth decay begins when acid produced by bacteria in plaque dissolves the mineral in the teeth, causing microscopic holes or "pores" to form. As the decay process progresses these micro-pores increase in size and number. Eventually the damaged tooth may have to be drilled and filled to prevent toothache or even removed. More

[Of course, unless the American Dental Association can find a way to make a great deal of money from the procedure, do not expect US approval. The British may one day have better teeth than Americans' pricey and artificial dentures, crowns, and caps.]

How to Break Through to Enlightenment

Bhikkhu Bodhi, In the Buddha's Words: An Anthology of Discourses from the Pali Canon

"Meditation" (bhavana) means cultivating the Noble Eightfold Path.

Eight Worthy Persons
The Buddha said, "These eight persons are worthy of gifts, hospitality, offerings, and reverential salutations. They are the unsurpassed field of merit for the world. What eight?

  1. the stream-enterer [first stage of enlightenment]
  2. one practicing for the realization of the fruit of stream-entry
  3. the once-returner
  4. one practicing for the realization of the fruit of once-returning
  5. the non-returner
  6. one practicing for the realization of the fruit of non-returning
  7. the arhat
  8. one practicing for the realization of the fruit of arhatship" (AN 8:59; IV 292).

The Buddha called the first stage of enlightenment "stream-entry."

Four Factors Leading to Stream-Entry
The Buddha asked Sariputra [foremost in wisdom]: "It is said, 'A factor for stream-entry, a factor for stream-entry.' What now, Sariputra, is a factor for stream-entry?" [Stream-entry is the first breakthrough to enlightenment.] "Venerable Sir," Sariptura answered:
  1. Association with superior persons is a factor for stream-entry.
  2. Hearing the true Dharma...
  3. Careful attention...
  4. Practice in accordance with the Dharma is a factor for stream-entry."

"Good, Sariputra, good! It is just as you say. And it is said, 'The stream, the stream.' What now is the stream?"

  • "Venerable Sir, this Noble Eightfold Path is the stream: right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration."

"Good, Sariputra, good! It is just as you say. And it is said, 'A stream-enterer, a stream-enterer.' What now is a stream-enterer?"

  • "Venerable Sir, one who possesses ["knows and sees"] this Noble Eightfold Path is called a stream-enterer -- this venerable person of such a name and extended-family."

"Good, Sariputra, good! One who possesses this Noble Eightfold Path is a stream-enterer -- this venerable person of such a name and extended-family" (SN 55:5; V 410-411).

"Stream-entering" means entering the Noble Eightfold Path.

Entering the Fixed Course of Rightness
"Meditators, the eye is impermanent, changing, constantly undergoing alteration. The ear... nose... tongue... body... The mind is impermanent, changing, constantly undergoing alteration.

"One who places confidence [saddha or faith, conviction, trust] in these teachings and resolves on them thus is called a faith-follower, one who has entered the 'fixed course of rightness' [in other words, sammattaniyama, the supramundane Noble Eightfold Path], entered the plane of superior persons, transcended the plane of ordinary [uninstructed] worldlings.

"One is incapable of doing any deed by reason of which one might be reborn in hell, in the animal realm, or in the domain of afflicted spirits.

"One is incapable of passing away without having realized the fruit of stream-entry.*

The "light of wisdom," according to Pa Auk Sayadaw, is not merely metaphorical.

"One for whom these teachings are accepted thus after being pondered to a sufficient degree with wisdom is called a Dharma-follower, one who has entered the fixed course of rightness, entered the plane of superior persons, transcended the plane of ordinary worldlings....

"One who knows and sees these teachings thus is called a stream-enterer, no longer bound to the lower world, fixed in destiny, destined for enlightenment"** (SN 25:1; III 225).

NOTES
*Contrary to the commentaries, which hold that the path-attainer realizes the fruit immediately after attaining the path, the original texts say merely that one who reaches the stage of Dharma-follower or faith-follower (corresponding to the commentarial notion of path-attainer) will realize the fruit within this same life -- but not necessarily in the next mind-moment.

The two positions might be reconciled if we see the path of the Dharma-follower and the faith-follower as extended in time but reaching its climax in an instantaneous breakthrough that is immediately followed by realization of the fruit.

**This statement makes it clear how the stream-enterer differs from those on the path to stream-entry.

  • The faith-follower accepts the teaching on trust (with a limited degree of understanding).
  • The Dharma-follower accepts the teaching through investigation (with a greater degree of understanding).
  • But the stream-enterer has directly known and seen the teaching.

Mt. Sineru "seen" by Science

Plasma interacting with "Mt. Sineru," that is, the magnetic lines of force streaming from the north pole. The figure literally depicts the oxygen, helium, and hydrogen ions that gush into space from regions near the Earth's poles. The faint yellow gas shown above the north pole represents gas lost from Earth into space. The green gas is the aurora borealis, or plasma energy pouring back into the atmosphere (NASA).

A recent breakthrough by a small team of WQ cosmographers, scholars, and mathematicians has determined that Mt. Sineru (Sanskrit, Meru or Great Meru: Sumeru) is a literal feature on earth. It refers to the magnetic phenomena (emanations and lines of force) visible to rishis ("seers") who also perceive what would in modern terms be labeled levels of the ionosphere and in spiritual terms as celestial planes. One corresponds with the other; the physical and spiritual are intertwined.
In this NASA depiction, "Mt." Sineru is shown as an interaction of the earth's magnetic force and plasma from the solar wind. It should now be possible to firmly fix the ancient Indian distances yojana and nahuta by extrapolating and comparing Buddhist texts against astronomical and atmospheric measurements.

"At yet a further level, the two triangles represent the twin mountains of Paradise, Mt. Sumeru and Mt. Kumeru. These two mountains are place at the antipodes of each other, one in north India (Mt. Sumeru or Kailasa), the other one in Indonesia (the Mt. Krakatoa volcano), such being the reason why they are represented as the inverse (or mirror images) of each other. The Hindus equate this mystic union of Fire and Water to the Vadava-mukha, the Submarine Mare. This is in fact the Krakatoa Volcano, where in fact Fire (magma) combines with Water (sea water) in a very fragile equilibrium which becomes disrupted at Doomsday, in order to destroy the world, as described in our page on The True History of Atlantis."
