Brain science: Smelling Light

Franken-mice are being altered to be able to sense light with their noses. Too hard to believe?Anyone who has ever experienced synesthesia -- the curious experience of, for example, tasting sound or feeling flavor -- will know it's already possible with certain parts of the brain affecting other parts. Synesthetes are not all on acid (LSD). Although their pineal glands may be producing extra DMT. Many artists, musicians, and artistic/slightly autistic individuals experience it constantly, and it seems to help them.
Researchers known as octogenetics experts from Harvard University and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory conducted the vivisection (experimentation on living beings). They installed light sensitive proteins in the genome of mice, altering their olfactory systems: Hear all about it in under 90 seconds on the Loh Down on Science.

Mind Control: Cat and Mouse example
"I have no idea where the mouse came from. He just appeared in the enclosure after the keeper had dropped in the meat for the leopard. He didn't take any notice of the leopard, just went straight over to the meat and started feeding himself. But the leopard was pretty surprised. She bent down and sniffed the mouse and flinched a bit like she was scared. In the meantime the mouse just carried on eating like nothing had happened...but even a gentle shove does not deter the little creature from getting his fill... It was amazing. Even the keeper who had thrown the meat into the enclosure was shocked. He said he'd never seen anything like it before."- Cat parasite may affect cultural traits in human pop.

Fasting: Eat Less, Remember More
"Less food, more thought," long a sta-ple of Buddhist meditators, Himalayan yogis, and other religious seekers, fasting is gaining credibility due to modern research. The more weight lost, the more memory improved. A preliminary study suggests that restricting calories (or regular, vigorous exercise -- such as yoga -- for those who are already at a healthy weight) is proven to improve memory.- ABC News: How diet could help

Science: Memories, Discoveries, Impressions
Using a complex genetic approach, U.S. and Chinese researchers believe they have done just that in mice, but the feat is far from being tested on humans. Study co-author Joe Z. Tsien, co-director of the Brain & Behavior Discovery Institute at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, says the "work reveals a molecular mechanism of how [memory deletion] can be done quickly and without doing damage to brain cells." The finding is published in the Oct. 23, 2008 issue of Neuron. More>>- Discoveries: New Underwater Creatures
"Impression Management"
Patricia Wallace, a psychologist at the Johns Hopkins University Center
for Talented Youth, is an expert on information technology and psychology and said that the phenomenon can be explained, in part, by "impression management." "If you go to a pub and you're sitting by yourself, that says something. Rather than to be thought of as a loner or not desirable as company, you use your virtual connection to look like you're more desirable and involved and actively engaged with others," she said. US scientists have found a safer method of turning mice skin cells into "induced pluripotent stem cells," in a potential breakthrough in the quest for regenerative therapy. The method reprograms skin cells into iPS cells that are similar to embryonic stem cells without using potentially harmful viruses that often cause tumors in laboratory animals (AFP/HO/File).
