Oldest living American is 110-y.o. Buddhist

We ain't your father's father, Boy. We're keeping fit, going vegan, sun, exercise, and vitamnis.
What is the secret of Asian longevity? Buddhist attitude and Asia diet habits like rice.
5 Longevity Tips From The Oldest Living Japanese American Person (today.com)
Oldest living Japanese American, 110, shares her longevity tips and the 1 food she eats daily
Great waves, great floods (ogha, asava) are coming. Don't resist. Surf to the further shore.
.
Supercentenarian Yoshiko Miwa, 110
With 110 years of life behind her, Buddhist American YOSHIKO MIWA, who was born in California, isn’t going to wallow in the negative, and she doesn’t want you to either.

The oldest living person of Japanese descent in the United States, according to the Gerontology Research Group, Miwa prefers to focus on the times when she was happiest.

She’s lived through the Spanish flu [an epidemic everyone tried to keep secret except those in Spain], alcohol prohibition, Black Tuesday, World War II, and the losses of her parents, siblings, and friends, and still the supercentenarian’s go-to piece of longevity advice is: Don’t dwell.
California Buddhist roots
Yoshiko Miwa at her 110th birthday celebration at Gardena Buddhist Church (Alan Y. Miwa)

  • A Japanese mindful Zen Buddhist attitude is key
[What's a more positive way of stating this? In Buddhist terms, the expression means "Be mindful." Mindfulness of the present -- with a radical awareness and acceptance of what is -- is the secret to good mental health. Rather than dwelling on the past or projecting into the future, it is possible to be safe right here right now. This is what Byron Katie teaches, it is what Eckhart Tolle has been trying to say in lecture after lecture, and it is what the Buddha taught. American academic turned spiritual guru Ram Dass (aka Harvard's Dr. Richard Alpert) famously said the exact same thing: "Be here now." Be where? Here, in the present moment. When? Now.]
109 years old in 2023 — what a blessing
Miwa is part of the Nisei — the second-generation Japanese Americans sent to internment camps during World War II [so she has something to dwell on if she let herself mope and be miserable] — who often say “gaman,” which translates to “enduring the seemingly unbearable with patience and dignity,” her son, Alan Miwa, tells TODAY.com.

Buddhist Virgin Mary: Kwan Yin
It’s often loosely translated as “perseverance,” “patience,” “tolerance” [or the Buddhist term khanti, which can be translated as either “forbearance” or “forgiveness,” which is key to karuna or “compassion.”]

These feelings, Alan Miwa suspects, are born from the resilience of many from his mother’s generation — who had much to endure. Shikata ga nai (仕方がない) -- a Japanese phrase meaning, “It cannot be helped” or “Nothing can be done about it” -- is a common saying among them, too, he adds.

Mexico's Our Lady of Guadalupe
Yoshiko Miwa was born Yoshiko Tanaka in the U.S. on Feb. 28, 1914, to Japanese immigrants in Guadalupe, California. She was the fifth of seven children.

When her mother and infant brother died in 1919, her father struggled to care for his family and tend to the farm he owned.

So Yoshiko Miwa and her siblings were sent to live at the children’s home founded by their parish, Guadalupe Buddhist Church (buddhistchurchesofamerica.org).
  • Massive Japanese Buddha, Bodh Gaya, India
    Who is Guadalupe?
She is the Mexican apparition of the Virgin Mary, a goddess of compassion like Asia's Kwan Yin (Avalokiteshvara, Guanyin, Kwannon), beloved my Mexican Americans in California and throughout the Americas.
  • Her Buddhist faith energizes her: Yoshiko Miwa was 4 years old when her father turned to the Japanese Buddhist church for help. “The church then started a children’s home and taught us Buddhism, Japanese language, Japanese culture, and responsibility,” she recalls. “I’ve always been indebted to Reverend and Mrs. Matsuura.” She is grateful to them (leaders of the city of Guadalupe Buddhist Church), who took her in when her mother passed away.
  • She loves to eat rice noodles: Yoshiko Miwa’s a fan of all kinds of [rice, yam, potato] noodles, eating them every day. “When I was in the children’s home, the cook used to make noodles, and I used to love them,” she says. “Today, I like...udon, ramen, soba, and any other kind of noodles.”
.
UC Berkeley is the greatest public univerity
She went on to graduate from Santa Maria High School in 1932, and she studied business at the University of California, Berkeley, graduating in 1936.

She married Henry Miwa in 1939. During the Second World War, the pair and their families were sent to Poston Internment Camp in Arizona before relocating to Hawthorne, Southern California, after the war.

When they, along with many other Japanese people, had difficulty finding work upon their release in 1945, her husband founded a plant nursery business, and in 1963, Yoshiko Miwa got her nursing license.

World's oldest: Maria Branyas, 117 (Californian)
Yoshiko Miwa has three sons, 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

These days, Alan Miwa says she’s in good health and lives in a care facility, where she gets her hair done weekly and attends church services on Sundays.

In addition to a positive spirit, keeping your mind and body active is the key to a long life, Yoshiko Miwa has said in the past. Ahead she shares a few other aspects of her life that she believes have led to her longevity.

Gluten kills even without stomach symptoms

Dr. Tom O'Bryan, Host Lisa Garr, Coast to Coast AM, Feb. 3, 2023; Eds., Wisdom Quarterly
I'm not fat. I have chronic inflammation. I'm burning up, making me susceptible to cancer!
A gluten-free, vegan Mediterranean diet with real olive oil may be the best.
.
TheInflammationEquation.com 3 Step Gut Reboot
The biggest message Dr. O'Bryan revealed last night was that EVERYONE who consumes wheat or "gluten-free" products contaminated with wheat gluten (up to 20% and still legally labelled "gluten-free") is harmed by it. The human body recognizes wheat protein as an invasive organism and reacts to it as a pathogen because of the proteins and peptides on its surface. All of this has been made much worse by Monsanto Corporation and Big Ag, which have increased the gluten (a harmful plant lectin) in wheat for ease of processing, making it more addictive even as it does more harm like stripping away the cilia lining the gut responsible for most of our nutrient absorption.
It's no wonder so many of us are fat, inflamed, and malnourished. That's right. We're starving not for calories, which are in abundance, but for nutrients, particularly micronutrients. Dr. Joel Wallach insists we need about 92 nutrients from our diet (if these nutrients were still found in the soil) or from supplements to be healthy and not deteriorating. Suffice it to say, most of us are deteriorating. We need to clear out the bad (remove all gluten and about 13 other harmful agents typically consumed on the SAD (Standard American Diet) to be able to absorb and assimilate the benefits of essential supplements. While everyone who eats wheat and wheat-contaminated products is harmed, only about 1 in 8 exhibit stomach symptoms. The rest of us are suffering from mental, skin, and many other problems. For more, see Dr. O'Bryan's work at:  The Inflammation Equation

Gwyneth Paltrow appears in court over ski crash
(Inside Edition) March 21, 2023. Hollywood actor and infamous "conscious uncoupling" divorcee from the singer of Coldplay Gwyneth Paltrow appeared in court with security by her side for a ski collision [she caused] at a resort.

She is facing Dr. Terry Sanderson, a 76-year-old retired optometrist, who claims she plowed into him on a ski slope, leaving him with four broken ribs and permanent brain damage (PBI).

[He was suing for $3.1 million but was forced by the judge to lower that amount to $300,000 as the limit in this case.] The collision happened in February 2016 on a beginner's ski trail at a ritzy resort in Park City, Utah.

During opening statements, Ms. Paltrow's lawyer says Dr. Sanderson was the one who crashed into her. [Gwynnie is countersuing Dr. Sanderson for $1, yes, one US dollar, oh, plus all legal fees.]

5 Foods for Meat and Killing w/ Dave Asprey

Tom Bilyeu, 11/1/22; Pfc. Sandoval, Ash Wells, Ananda (Dharma B Meditation), Wisdom Quarterly
Yum, that was good. We're going to live to be 185 by killing and eating the dead? - Ya'think?

The 5 Foods to Never Eat Again After Watching This | Dave Asprey
(Tom Bilyeu) Nov. 1, 2022. On today's episode: What are we basing our diet choices on? With the abundance of information available, there is no shortage of diet camps to choose from.

So humans have to kill to live?
Whether we have decided on being compassionate vegan or self-deluded carnivores (convincing ourselves that killing animals is the nice and moral thing to do for them, y'know, so they won't suffer so much), vegetarian, raw, or decided to lovingly follow a plant-based diet, maybe a pegan (paleo-vegan), to support being more humane to all animals, how is our decision impacting our health and that of the environment?

Please let me live, Dave.
Dave Asprey, “the father of biohacking” and founder of the Bulletproof Diet and Upgrade Labs, has been digging into the research and data determined to live a normal human life of 185 years. He’s already reversed his biological age by 11 years, and in this episode he’s laying out mind-blowing ways to biohack our way to better health with less time and effort in the gym and why following a plant-based, vegan diet may not be as kind and friendly to the planet as we’re led to believe.

I was born with three hearts to love better.
There are many ways to achieve optimal health, the question is which one is best for us? This episode is about covering our bases and knowing what areas are more meaningful for us to look into and consider. It's controversial, and Dave Asprey is wrong in some key ways, but in other ways he has a point. It just goes to proves, the mind can convince itself of anything once we set our heart on it -- even killing and calling it good.

QUOTES:
“When you are depleted of minerals none of the repair systems in the body or the energy systems can work.” [2:57]

“I was a raw vegan. I was a regular vegan. It made me profoundly sick [because I didn't do it right].” [14:50]

“When you choose a vegan diet, you are voting against the presence of any [slaughtered] animals in that agricultural land.” [18:22]

“When you upgrade your biology so it works better, you have a better system for detecting reality around you.” [1:20:58]

“If you ignore the body, you ignore the threat networks in the body and you just work on the mind you’ll never get there.” [1:22:30]

Veggie Burger: made better at home (recipe)

Minimalist Baker Recipes; Imogen, Ananda (DBM), Crystal Q., Wisdom Quarterly Test Kitchen

Add mushrooms and hempseeds.
Now that Doug the Cannibal, former COO for Beyond Meat Corporation, has taken to biting off noses like Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs, we may have to start cutting back on Beyond Burgers.

But we're still vegans who love savory flavors and healthy ingredients. Which brings up the question, Why in the world do faux burgers contain canola (rapeseed) oil of all ingredients? That's one of the worst ingredients in the world! There are fats that heal and fats that kill. Canola, like most plasticized and utterly dead filtered-oils, is a killer. We can do much better than that in our test kitchen. (A: They use it because it's cheap).

Veg burgers on gluten-free buns
Every now and again lovely readers send The Minimalist Baker emails with recipe requests. One such request came recently from a mother hoping to recreate the veggie beet burger a local restaurant serves, which her daughter just happens to love.

All other searches for “beet black bean burger” left her underwhelmed for flavor and overwhelmed at the extensive ingredient lists and time commitments. It's the Minimalist Baker to the rescue!

The following recipe is easy to master, nutritious, flavorful and, most importantly, it's simple. There are just 10 ingredients and roughly 1 hour prep time (or less depending on cooking method). Plus, it’s loaded with nutrient-rich foods like raw walnuts, black beans, quinoa, and raw beets.  More

MagellanTimes.com; Dr. Steven Gundry, Lewis Howes; Ashley Wells, Ananda, Wisdom Quarterly

The truth behind coronavirus: How to stay healthy
The Plant Paradox
Dr. Gundry, MD tackles the mystery of novel coronavirus COVID-19 (SARS-2), after the riddle was already solved by Dr. Joel Wallach (criticalhealthnews.com). Gluten (and other lectins) in the diet play a major role.

It is the "plant paradox." Co-morbidities (other simultaneous sicknesses) are the key to getting very sick. Otherwise, we wouldn't even know the plandemic were affecting us.

Dr. Steven Gundry is a renowned cardiologist, bestselling author, surgeon, and medical device inventor. He has performed thousands of heart surgeries in his 40-year career, but he learned to focus on prevention and natural healing, empowering people through diet to reverse and prevent ailments.

It's the gut. It's the gut. It's all in the gut.
He’s the director and founder of the International Heart & Lung Institute as well as the Center for Restorative Medicine in Palm Springs and Santa Barbara, California. Dr. Gundry helps patients learn how to take control of their weight to become thin, healthy, and energetic by using his simple diet advice.

He’s the New York Times best-selling author of The Plant Paradox series, the latest being The Longevity Paradox all about how we can live long and healthy lives and overcome the diseases of aging.

He hosts his own health podcast, The Dr. Gundry Podcast, which gives tools and information needed to hack vitality, avoid dangerous “health” foods, and balance our all-important gut.

Interviewer Lewis Howes has had Dr. Gundry on The School of Greatness twice before, and each time he inspires with his knowledge and motivation to help others learn the truth about good food, gut health, and mental clarity. Check out past episodes 772 and 521 together to learn more about Dr. Gundry’s practices and health advice. In times like these it’s important to make sure we’re healthy with strong immune systems. Let’s learn how to take control of our health, strengthen our defenses, and protect ourselves from COVID-19 on Episode 935 with Dr. Gundry.

What are ex-royals Megs and Hairy up to?

The royal family was hit by scandal when Prince Harry Windsor announced that he and his wife, Los Angeles actor Meghan Markle, would both be stepping down as senior royals. The couple also reportedly revealed that they wanted a more private life with their baby son, Archie, basing themselves between the United Kingdom and Canada. So remaining in the spotlight as royals wasn’t an option. And although Harry seems determined to make the new arrangements work as they become famous Hollywood types, his decision has apparently cost him a lot of privileges. More

It's all about breath: PTSD, sex... (video)

Stig Severinsen, TEDx Talk, 2019/2010; Pat Macpherson, Dhr. Seven (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

How to hold your breath for 20 minutes
(TEDx Denmark) Stig Åvall Severinsen was the first person to hold his breath for more than 20 minutes under water, a Guinness world record. He believes that controlling the breath [prana, chi, spiritus, "invisible lifeforce energy," "animating principle"] means controlling our lives.

Stig Severnisen, a Danish freediver and holder of multiple world records, leaves audiences breathless. When he is not training or setting new records, he runs a global business based on his revolutionary concept he calls "Breatheology," aimed at changing the world one breath at a time.

(TEDx Copenhagen) Years later Severnisen is holding his breath longer.

This time around he is not showing how we can breathe better, but what happens when he pushes his body closer to the edge of what is thought to be possible and then a bit beyond. What if we’re closer to this edge than we imagine and going further every single day? Severnisen is a world champion freediver, bestselling author, and holder of multiple world records—among these is the longest freedive under ice, and becoming the first person to ever hold his breath for more than 20 minutes.

COMMENTS
  • (Julian Hubbard) Awesome story, a little uneven on the presentation, but it should not matter; this guy is the real deal. Stig Severinsen and Wim Hof should get together and compare notes.
  • (Paxus) If you find this interesting, you'll also find Wim Hof's methods interesting.
  • (Anders Hass) To the people who think Stig should have credited Wim Hof, I don't see why he should have. They are two different men with two different approaches. They are both pioneers that set new standards which challenge the existing science. While Wim is running a marathon in the desert without water and immersing himself in ice and climbing Mount Everest in shorts and tennis shoes while  fighting infections by breathing, Stig is freediving under ice in Speedos, holding his breath for over 22 minutes in -1 degrees C, slowing his heart rate using only his techniques [breath control called pranayama, diet control, yoga] and mind and even skipping heartbeats voluntarily.... Stig comes from the world of freediving, doing this for about 25 years, so I think he stands on his own merits.

One sip of Diet Soda on the Brain (video)

Brew, May 2, 2019; TopTenz; CC Liu, Crystal Q. (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Are diet sodas toxic for us? Are they at least healthier than white-sugar sodas? These are some of the questions many have on their minds. Today, let's look into the science of diet sodas. Is it the cure for the common cola or another guilty poison in the service of dieting and restrictions? Let's find out.

(TopTenz) Who invented non-alcoholic "soft" drinks? Hitler, Hillbillies?
