What's the most mysterious mountain in world? Mt. Sumeru or Mt. Kailash?

But there is one mountain thousands of meters shorter and not even in the Top 100 highest peaks in the world that no one has climbed and no one even dares to try to climb, not even the most experienced mountaineers. That mountain is Mount Kailash -- which has many features that suggest it may be the mythical "mountain" at the center of Buddhist cosmology, as well as that of Hindu and Jain cosmologies. Mount Meru (Sanskrit and Pali मेरु, "Mountain High") is also known as Mt. Sumeru, Sineru, or Mahā Meru.

It is the sacred mountain of Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain cosmologies. It is considered to the center of all physical, metaphysical, and spiritual universes [1], [the axis mundi of a multiverse, which is not to say every multiverse in the omniverse].

This mysterious "mountain" (or magnetic lines of force extending out of the atmosphere and into space where the heavenly planes are physically located) is also mentioned in some scriptures of non-Dharmic religions such as Taoism, which was influenced by the arrival of Buddhism in China [2].

There is no clear identification of Mt. Sumeru with a particular geophysical location, but it is always located in the Himalayan or Aravalli ranges. Many famous Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain temples have been built as symbolic representations of this mountain.

Why is this one bead different than the others?

The "Sumeru Throne" (须弥座 xūmízuò) style base is a common feature of Chinese pagodas. The highest point (finial bud) on the pyatthat, a Burmese-style multi-tiered roof, represents Mount Meru.

THE NAME meru derives from Sanskrit and means "high." The proper name of the mountain is Meru (Sanskrit Meruparvata), with the prefix su-, resulting in the meaning "Excellent or Sublime Mount Meru" [3]. Meru is also the name of the central bead in a string of rosary beads or mālā [4].

Inner Earth Civilizations Exist and I Can Prove It: Agartha and Our Hollow Earth

The word Agartha is of Buddhist origin. Buddhists believe in this massive subterranean empire, which they say has millions of inhabitants and many cities, including the capital Shambhala, where a "world ruler" (chakravartin) dwells.

They further believe that the Dalai Lama is his terrestrial representative. His messages have been transmitted to various lamas for thousands of years. These subterranean inhabitants have lived here sheltering humanity after many terrestrial cataclysms.

The Russian artist, philosopher, and explorer Nicolas Roerich published that a Tibetan lama revealed the capital of Tibet, Lhasa, is connected by a tunnel to Shambhala. (Its entrance is at the Potala Palace). The heart of that subterranean empire is Agartha.

The entrance of this tunnel is guarded by lamas, who are sworn to keep its actual whereabouts a secret from outsiders. Those who are led through this underground passage travel deep into the earth through areas where it becomes so narrow that it can be difficult to pass.

The Shamatha Project, launched in Spring of 2007, brings together a diverse group of scientists and laypersons (like Alma attached to brain sensors) to study and measure the long-term effects of practicing shamatha, or meditative quiescence [serenity].

Although the training at Shambhala Mountain Center lasted three months, nearly one in five of the participants (12 out of 60) elected to continue full-time practice. So moved were they by their experiences that they immediately sought out the support that could sustain them in the long-term pursuit of shamatha.

This unexpected response required quick action, and temporary accommodations were found for all of the continuing shamatha yogis. Now more permanent accommodations and funding are required to sustain dedicated meditators from the Shamatha Project and from the 8-week shamatha retreats that Dr. B. Alan Wallace (pictured) is leading at the Phuket Int'l Academy Mind Centre in Thailand.

Fortunately, their needs are as modest as their goals are great. They have much work ahead, and it is our hope and intention to support them all the way. More>>

Dr. Brooks Agnew was raised in Pasadena, California and spent most of his youth hanging around CalTech and the folks who co-opted the Jet Propulsion Labs. He entered the US Airforce in 1973 where he became an electronics engineer.

After an honorable discharge, he attended Brigham Young University in Kentucky and Tennessee Tech. He has a Bachelor's degree in chemistry, a Master's degree in statistics, and a Ph.D. in physics.

He has published more than 100 articles and papers on subjects ranging from radiation spectroscopy to transdimensional movement through space-time. He was a featured scientist in the 1997 Wendy Robbins' documentary on HAARP, "Holes in Heaven."

He is currently a consultant to the manufacturing industry, where his designs have saved or provided more than a thousand jobs in two states. He holds multiple patents in chemistry. He also teaches mathematics at Gaston College in North Carolina.

Dr. Agnew has recently co-authored a landmark publication on the creation of the earth, The Ark of Millions of Years in three volumes.

Celtic Buddhism?

The lineage of "Celtic Buddhism" was suggested in the 1970s during casual conversation between the renowned Tibetan lama Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and his student John Perks. Its actual development is the result of the mixing of their minds.

The lineage was formally incorporated as a non-profit in 1989, when it took on an official status. After meeting for years in rented rooms Ven. Seonaidh Riley Perks established the Anadaire Celtic Buddhist Center on 11 acres in Vermont, where the sangha ["community"] erected a stone circle which has aided in increasing and focusing energies of transformation.

Beginning in April, 2006 several of the sangha would move to Ireland for a year to strengthen and expand Celtic Buddhism. (More details: Center Programs).

Sangha members are encouraged to establish a daily meditation practice. The Vermont sangha practices include shamatha/vipashyana, tonglen ["serenity/insight, taking and giving meditation"], deity yoga, and Tibetan style ngöndro and chöd. As a group there are yearly retreats to Maine or, to further connect with latent Celtic energies, Ireland and Scotland. One member has delved into thangka painting to explore the emerging Celtic Buddhist mandala.

The development of a new lineage is a very interesting and potent situation. Staying open and intuitive is both the challenge and the opportunity.

Traditional Buddhists may complain about unstructured aspects of Celtic Buddhism. Ven. Seonaidh says, "It's still a big question mark as to what Celtic Buddhism is going to evolve into. It's important to make the question mark very big, so that it remains a big open question. Not only about oneself, but the society in which one lives. Celtic Buddhism could be viewed as an open exploratory adventure with no conclusion."

Book: The Mahasiddha and His Idiot Servant
