Why didn't Buddhist ascetics go naked like Jains and yogis?
Jainism has two sects, white-clad and sky-clad, whereas Buddhism has saffron robes for all.
.
Ah, nudity is great. - What about white robes?
It was hot in proto-India in the Buddha's time. Pointing the way to freedom and final liberation or moksha was as free as the deer, wandering where they list in search of (alms) food. But there were obstacles. The Awakened One, the Buddha, had freed himself. Now it was time to make known the Path to Freedom, the Dharma. But how long would that knowledge last in the world? It had gone out before and was sure to dim again.

We shramanas existed long before the Buddha
He realized he needed a spiritual community of successful practitioners, a Noble Sangha, where "noble" means "enlightened" (Ayran) and Sangha means "spiritual community." There are various stages of enlightenment, from four kinds of stream entry to arhatship. They are detailed in the Path to Freedom and condensed in the Path of Purification. This Sangha would have them all.

To keep it going and to preserve the Teachings, the Buddha laid down rules in a Disciplinary Code (Vinaya Pitaka), with explanations for why each rule was instituted. The monastics recited about 227 core rules, the Patimokkha ("Path to Liberation"), each fortnight. If followed, they would ensure the long life of Buddhism (the Dharma), enlightened beings on earth (a Noble Sangha), and inspire confidence in new practitioners.

The Guru is naked (Jainism)
How was it going to look if monks and nuns went around naked? It was not unheard of. The Jains led by contemporary teacher Mahavira ("Great Hero"), the Nigantha Nattaputta, had already accepted females into the monastic community. That was a first. The Buddha always intended to, as he knew that his Sangha would not be complete until there were the four kinds of people (male and female monastics and laypersons).
  • This whole business about extra rules for nuns or not wanting to accept women is very suspect and seems more a conspiracy by male monastics to keep their all-boys club or wrest control of it from any kind of actual democracy. The Buddha had set up the first democratic rules, pre-Greece for its governance. See the scholarship of Ayya Tathaloka for evidence in the Bhikkhuni Vinaya of the later appearance of the garudhammas or "eight additional rules" and their unlikely back story.
Naked Mahavira: We don't need Five Requisites
The Buddha explained exactly why he allowed Five Requisites for Buddhist wandering ascetics -- robes of stitched cast-off garments, ceramic bowl, allowable medicines, shaving razor, needle and thread -- and the kinds of accommodations they were permitted. Rather than hairy, disheveled, wild men and women wandering around the hillsides naked and covered in ashes, he foresaw a better way, the perfection of the "pure life" of blamelessness for intensive practitioners wishing to make a quick end of all suffering.

Nude is not all it's cracked up to be, but the view
at night in the Sierra Nevada, it's awe inspiring!
Nirvana was here. And now a means of enlightenment and attainment of the bliss of nirvana had arrived with the Buddha. Many made use of it and so, even today, the world has arhats and those on the path to full enlightenment. And Buddhism became the first universal missionary religion spreading far and wide, outside the subcontinent into neighboring countries and lands. The rules made that possible. Hooray for the Monastic Disciplinary Code (Vinaya). And people, if they want, they can go about naked.

The Renaissance Pleasure Faire (SoCal)

As the God punishes the East Coast, the Goddess blesses the indulgent West Coast (RenFair)
.
Work at RenFair SoCal. Help wanted.
The Renaissance Pleasure Faire has arrived in the San Gabriel Valley at the Santa Fe Dam Recreational Area in Irwindale, where the 134 and 605 Freeways cross (near the big brewery).

The Renaissance Faire opened last weekend for its Southern California run. This lakeside area (Santa Fe Dam reservoir) is a wonderful place to spend a few hours, with a lot of great opportunities to people watch, says Robyn.

Thanks to an abundance of actors and stages, visitors really do feel like they have been transformed back to the Renaissance ["Rebirth"] time period. Small children really have fun, as there is a plethora of things for them to do amidst the adult debauchery. There are plenty of options for food and drink. But mainly it's just cosplay for busty adults in those special "cleavage platter" brassieres and the people who love them (RenFair.com).

Royally screwed: Prince Harry, Meghan to divorce

Sky News, AU, July 27, 2023; Ashley Wells, CC Liu, Sheldon S. (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
I don't care about the lost money or royal title. I'll just start my own Only Fans page.

Royally screwed: The end of Harry and Meghan’s fairytale marriage

(Sky News Australia) The Ginger and The Whinger, professional complainers -- are headed for divorce court. That's right. Prince Duke Harry [Windsor] and Duchess Meghan Markle, known as the Sussexes, are doomed. They won't make it past the Seven Year Itch.
Divorce? If well-sourced rumors are to be believed then, sadly, the answer is yes. We were all there when Meghan and Harry fell in love, tied the knot, and made a beautiful fairytale family combining Black and extraterrestrial DNA.

You made the wrong choice, Hairly.
But even the rich and famous, the royal and beautiful, aren’t immune to the realities of life. Career and family pressures have caused a rift between the previously loving couple, with those famous PDAs (public displays of affection) reportedly being replaced by separate bedrooms and meetings with conniving divorce lawyers.

Sky News All-Stars Megyn Kelly, Angela Levin, and Esther Krakue take a look at how it all went wrong for the Sussexes. Sky News All Stars

California hit by rains, floods during drought

Weather.com, 1/9/23; Seth Auberon, Pfc. Sandoval, Sheldon S. (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
Rainstorm flood watch warning issued for Southern California (Twitter via LA Times)

Will the Sierra snowpack sustain us?
The artificial drought California is enduring (as some agency or agencies control the weather and keep weather anomalies, like an artificial high-pressure system, moving atmospheric rivers to flood areas while starving others of normal precipitation levels). Now the waterworks are being turned on with little to no effect on drought being claimed. The Island of California (aka "Paradise") is still in it. The state is flooding, crumbling, and being devastated, all while not storing much if any of that free water for later when it's desperately needed to avoid draining the Colorado River and its reservoirs to water our lawns.
(Weather.com) California is once again being pummeled by flooding rain and damaging winds after yet another atmospheric river storm pushed into the state. That flooding forced more evacuations in areas like Santa Cruz County, south of the San Francisco Bay Area, where the San Lorenzo River reached major flood stage today (Monday) morning and appeared to have flooded homes. At least 12 people have died in California in storm-related incidents since the storms started hammering the state a couple of weeks ago.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! 1/6/23; Pfc. Sandoval, Seth Auberon, Ashley Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Hell breaks loose in House, insurrectionists two years later, Prince Harry’s frozen “todger”
My taxes? Jan. 6th? I'm president!
(Jimmy Kimmel Live, Jan. 6, 2023) The Mega Millions jackpot is up to almost a billion dollars, today is the second anniversary of the violent Republican January 6th Insurrection, elected Republicans have done everything they can do downplay what happened two years ago, we catch up with some of the old members of Team Treason to see what they are up to, there is a new gift for the MAGA-loving loved one in your life, hell is still breaking loose in the House of Representatives as Kevin McCarthy tries to get enough votes to be named speaker of the House, the Never Kevers (no way to Kevin McC) seem to be running out of steam, Prince Harry reportedly had a frostbitten penis during William & Kate’s wedding, and This Week in Unnecessary Censorship.

(Jimmy Dore) The Kevin McCarthy debacle in the House shows that AOC and the Squad are frauds.

Prince Harry engaged to black LA gal (photos)

Ashley Wells, Seth Auberon, Pat Macpherson, Crystal Quintero (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
Say what? Well, to be fair, she's only as black as Barry S. Obama. Crazy Prince Harry, 33, handsome ginger son of assassinated world-renowned Princess Diana, is marrying a black woman -- a divorced black woman, a bi-racial black/white actress, a Los Angeleno, 36, named Meghan Markle (no relation to Harry Potter, she plays Rachel Zane on Suits), who is nearly as winsome as sister-in-law Kate Middleton. Hooray!

Albinos dream of tan children.
Harry's the wild one of the royals, the only member likely to save that reptilian (naga) royal family, being himself a hybrid human with his humanity coming from Princess Di.

If you've been reading the tabloids like we have, you'd know that this engagement was coming. By now his brother's wife, hot Kate Duchess of something or other, has a bunch of fake kids assigned to her (surrogate and/or hybrid pregnancies ensure the future of the royal British/UK line). Ask David Icke about the royals. The AP is all over the fantasy details along with the rest of the world's mainstream media.

Oh, baby, I've got you on my mind. - Quit it, dummy. Help me run my Suits' lines.

Beg your pardon, Reptilian Highness, may I marry a commoner? - Sure. - A black one?

Meg promises to keep straightening her hair IF Harry lets his frizz out. Deal!
Meg may look too much like Kate, enough to make Pippa ban their wedding as she's done.

"Hunger Games" (and other attractions)

I. Rony, Wisdom Quarterly (COMING ATTRACTIONS)

The great thing about the "Hunger Games" is the message that in the future, everyone is hot! This record breaker is a new Hollywood remake of old Hollywood's "Logan's Run." But now it's about starving teenagers under an elite 1% rather than a forever-young society where anyone who turns 30 gets killed by prior agreement -- unless one decides to run. That's where sandman Logan comes in. The tables are turned on the establishment. This cheesy futuristic film of the seventies looks a lot better here with its deleted scenes restored and alternative footage (thanks to , who explains that the primary audience for this extended trailer was theater owners deciding whether or not to carry the film). "Logan's Run" became a classic, and the "Hunger Games" franchise is sure to be a massive blockbuster and golden goose. Read the books. More
"4:44 Last Day on Earth"

() The Dalai Lama appears along with many Buddhist images and references. A couple in love live in an apartment high above the city. He's an actor. She's a painter. This afternoon is like any other, except with one difference: The world will end tomorrow at 4:44 am. The final meltdown comes with a warning but with no means of escape. There will be no survivors. (Watch it at mubi.com).

Asura mythology: "Wrath of the Titans"

() Perseus embarks on a treacherous quest into the underworld to rescue Zeus, who has been targeted for capture by his traitorous son, Ares, and his brother, Hades. Five years after his first adventure, Perseus rules Argos with Andromeda at his side and a newborn baby as their heir. But in the shadows lurks Calibos, the cursed "demon" thought dead now out for revenge. Not only the Greeks but ancient Indians and Buddhists believed in the lore of the titans (asuras) and demigods (devas), who mated humans. A collective or archetypal memory of advanced alien visitors, Annunaki or Nephilim, who descended from space to establish empires in ancient pre-biblical lands of Sumer, Egypt, Greece, Mesopotamia, Babylon, and the mysterious East. Teaser. The same theme was explored in the films "Immortals" (with beautiful oracles) and "Thor" (about Nordic space aliens). PROMETHEUS: A team of explorers (with Charlize Theron) discover a clue to the origins of humankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race. A movie by Ridley Scott.

Blaze of Glory: The Toulouse Gunman Story

(ITN) In a world where European jihadists go apesh*t on Jewish school children and innocent cops, where it takes a paramilitary force of 300 to try to bring in one man alive, Mo Merah ain't going out like that. Not with Al Qaeda's blessings and Sarkozy's political future on the line. Watch the gripping true life tale of an angry pretext for a French clampdown on civil liberties and Internet freedoms. It's all in the name of greater "security," so fear not Francophiles. The safety you demanded is now mandatory. Read more in the US and directly from the BBC.

"The Expendables II"

(AllBallsEntertainment) Can't get enough killing with your extra large popcorn? Ultra-violence is the playground of a sexually repressed society. So if you haven't gotten enough of war-glorifying movies (that quietly normalize empire), how about films with real soldiers as actors and the US military winning Hollywood's help to find recruits for the US/MIC's wars abroad and spying on the homeland? Here is the ultimate testosterone-poisoned movie event of the year: Sylvester Stallone (Rambo), McGarnical (The Simpsons), Chuck Norris (Texas Ranger), Arnold Schwarzenegger (aka "McBain," failed California governor), Ashton Kutcher's dad (that bald guy, Demi's ex), and every action star with, inexplicably, the exception of Buddhist Steven Seagal.

From "Top Gun" to disgusting acts of murder, preemptive invasion, war crimes, and imperialism collectively renamed an "Act of Valor," this *ick flick is sure to keep the men in the family cooing and calling their friends:

"Act of Valor" - How Hollywood Helps the M.I.C.

() When the rescue of a kidnapped CIA operative leads to the discovery of a deadly "terrorist" plot against the US, a team of SEALs is dispatched on a worldwide manhunt. As the [mercenaries] of Bandito Platoon race to stop a coordinated attack that could kill and wound thousands of American civilians, they must balance their commitment to country, team, [apple pie], and their families back home. "Act of Valor" uses active-duty US Navy Seals as ham "actors." The characters they play are fictional and their thespian skills laughable, but the deadly weapons and tactics used are REAL. And now that the NDAA (the indefinite detention bill signed into law by Commander in Chief Obama) makes every American civilian a legitimate target simply under a secret allegation of anyone being a "belligerent," a "domestic 'terrorist,'" or an Occupy protester, the guns may be aimed at us.

"Hell and Back Again" (real life war)

() Embedded with US Marines' Echo Company in Afghanistan, photojournalist and filmmaker Danfung Dennis reveals the devastating impact a Taliban machine gun bullet (shot by a jihadist trying to defend from infidel thieves after an oil pipeline, rare earth minerals, and world domination through strategic influence of the region) has on the life of an invading 25-year-old Sergeant Nathan Harris, an imperial soldier for the US military-industrial complex. The film seamlessly transitions from stunning war reportage to an intimate, visceral portrait of one man's personal struggle at home in North Carolina, where Harris confronts the physical and emotional difficulties of re-adjusting to civilian life with the love and support of his wife, Ashley. Masterfully contrasting the intensity of the frontline with the unsettling normality of home, "Hell and Back Again" lays bare the true cost of war.

"Last Days Here" - destruction turned inward

() This documentary from Don Argott and Demian Fenton is a raw, real-life, yet unexpectedly touching portrait of cult metal legend Bobby Liebling, chronicling his bid to resurrect his life and career after decades of wasting away in his parents' basement. Liebling made his mark in the '70s as the outrageous frontman of Pentagram, a "street" Black Sabbath whose heavy metal riffs once blew audiences' minds. But various acts of self-destruction, multiple band break-ups, and botched record deals eventually condemned his music to obscurity. Now in his 50s, wasted by hardcore drug (heroin, meth, and crack) use and living on the charity of his ever-patient mother and father (a former Nixon advisor), Bobby's music is finally discovered by the heavy metal underground. For over three years filmmakers (and metal musicians) Argott and Fenton are witnesses to his unbelievable journey, following the triumphs and downfalls of this underground icon at the crossroads of life and death. Bjork's Army of Me ("Sucker Punch" remix)

(RobbieAlterno) Imagine if someone thought to mix senseless violence and demeaning sex? "Sucker Punch" explored the concept in a futuristic fantasy film about Nazis, strippers, and very strong girls who can at least dream of fighting and killing the way men are taught to heartlessly fight and kill. "Go along to get along," or what was the message being sent by Hollywood accompanied by a great Bjork song?

Sex Sells: Why Americans love Witchcraft

WISDOM QUARTERLY (OPINION)

  • October is "Monster Month" on Wisdom Quarterly

LYRICS TO BUDDHA'S DELIGHT: "I'm starting to believe, boy, that this is meant to be, boy, 'cause I believe in karma. Boy, do you believe in karma? So forget about your past life, 'cause this could be our last life. We're going to reach nirvana, boy, we're going to reach nirvana! Like sitting meditation, you give me elevation. Can you take me higher? Wonder, can you take me [even] higher. I want a revelation and sweet salvation and the eternal fire. Show me the eternal fire. Each time you put your lips to mine, it's like a taste of Buddha's delight! I see the gates of paradise. You're a taste of Buddha's delight. Tell me all your fantasies tonight. And I will make them happen, 'cause I'm not satisfied if I don't get my Buddha's delight!"

"Buddha's Delight" (featured on the soundtrack to "Music and Lyrics" Atlantic Records) utilizes sacred Buddhist imagery in an American "sex sells" marketing campaign. Why? -- all to make another dull and draining Drew Barrymore movie.

Those sacred Buddhist images have been replaced with clips from the popular television series "Charmed" (The WB). The original mock music video, featuring Haley Bennett, was deemed too prurient for Wisdom Quarterly (by a narrow margin of editorial votes). But if you must see it, look below.*

A mock Wiccan ceremony conducted for educational purposes in Latin America. These girls almost certainly do not get The WB (NIMBY: "not in my backyard").

Images of Hollywood-style magical powers, relationship issues, and the lives of pretty urban witches all conspire to explain our fascination with witchcraft, the supernatural, Harry Potter, vampire sagas, mystery and mysticism.

Now that Druidry is a recognized religion in Britain, it will not be long before more girls are out in their backyards enacting unprofitable rites and rituals (silabata), casting spells, and conjuring dangerous entities, which sadly do in fact exist like a hidden plague distorting the human experience.

WHY?

So the reason we love witchcraft (and the supernatural) is because we have a simplistic and idealized notion of magic. It answers all our prayers. Or at least we think it answers the thing we most frequently pray for -- satisfaction of desires. Because craving is at the root of all our suffering, we think satisfaction-of-craving is the solution.

But the solution is not endlessly trying to satisfy all the desires that arise life after life, which leads to utter misery. The solution is much better. It is the ultimate: It is realizing the end of craving and therefore the complete and utter extinction of all suffering.

Pitts' Advice for Evolved Humans

It's a jungle out there, and this month Wired delivers the new rules for highly evolved humans. It provides readers with a scientific approach to dozens of 21st century predicaments. Featured is some very bad advice from Brad Pitt such as: Don't online stalk before a first date: A 2007 study by Cornell and Michigan State found that 81 percent of participants who used online dating sites provided false information about how short, old, or heavy they were. Lying about reading

"Most Britons have lied about the books they read" (Reuters)

LONDON, [Britain] – Two out of three Britons have lied about reading books they have not, and George Orwell's "1984" tops the literary fib list, according to a survey published Thursday [3/5/09].

Commissioned by organizers of World Book Day, an annual celebration of reading in Britain, the study also shows that the author people really enjoy reading is J.K. Rowling, creator of the bestselling Harry Potter wizard series.

According to the survey, 65 percent of people have pretended to have read books, and of those, 42 percent singled out "1984." Next on the list came "War and Peace" by Leo Tolstoy and in third place was James Joyce's "Ulysses."

The Bible was in fourth position, and newly elected President Barack Obama's autobiography "Dreams from My Father" came ninth. More>>
