I'm so ugly and sad...and pretty?

If I feel pretty, am I pretty? - To someone.
(pale blue wave) I stopped her in the park, and what she told me broke my heart. So I photographed her portrait.

If "ugly" is a feeling (an emotion), what is beauty?

Is self-confidence beautiful and self-doubt revolting?

Personality is incomprehensibly important so that even dwarves, Elephant Men, beasts, and hideous creatures are beautiful to some beauties out there.

Beauty is only skin deep. Deep inside the skin are very lovely things -- charm, comeliness, humor, riches! What is any one of us after other than being loved, feeling protected, comforted, understood, accommodated? Some even get off on loving others.

What's worse, Satan or Heartbreak?

18 fascinating facts about Nina Persson
Long, long ago, there was this cool Swedish band that used to do covers, as most new bands are wont to do. Like nearly everyone else, they covered Black Sabbath standards. They are so catchy, easy, and powerful, that it's a good way to get a rock 'n roll career going. But the band was The Cardigans with an ice princess for a singer, one with a saccharine voice and looks. Some member, possibly the drummer, said, "I know! Let's cover the most iconic and evil Black Sabbath song, a song so evil they named themselves after it!"

"But how can we make it MORE evil?" someone asked. "I know, someone else must've said, 'Well turn it into a love song, maybe throw in some domestic abuse.'" "Yeah!" or "Whatever," the others must've said. (What's worse, the Devil or being trapped in an abusive romantic relationship with a jerk partner?)

And so "Heartbreaker" was born. Now, no Cardigans fan knows it's "Black Sabbath," and no Sabbath fans know who the F The Cardigans are, but evil is evil, and a rock 'n roll classic is a classic for a reason (or it may have something to do with the Devil's note, the tritone).

Now, in Christianity, "Satan" is the source of all evil, all harm, all bad things. He's like the counterpart to a jerk allegedly all-powerful God who is all "good." But satan really means the "adversary," any adversary, as in divorce court.

Saddest Day of Year: 'Blue Monday' (1/19)

"Those who fail to plan PLAN to fail"

Capitalist salesman Kevin Trudeau says he was initiated into uncle's "The Brotherhood"

Feel the feelings without clinging to them.
There is a saying we should all know. For by knowing it, we can love it and live it. Kevin Trudeau [Hevin' True Dough?] the miracle way to happiness is to take 100% responsibility for everything that happens to us.

"Well, that's impossible!" we may exclaim. "I can't be responsible for what others do to me!" Are we going to wait for them and react accordingly? Wouldn't it be better to act as if everything that happens to us were our fault?

"The buck stops here." If it stops here with me then it starts here with me, too. That is a good and useful way to approach "karma" -- the POWER OF OUR DEEDS TO PRODUCE RESULTS (eventual fruit and immediate mental resultants), now and in the interminable future.

Rather than wasting time wondering if everything is our fault, the advice given to successful Trudeau was to act as if everything were our fault. Love it. Live it. Because when we do, we will see a miracle.

There's no more waiting for the universe or others or anything to do things. It's just us.
  • Blue Monday is on Jan. 19 this year: Blue Monday is the name given to the third Monday in January by former Cardiff University health psychologist [1] Cliff Arnall in 2005 [2, 3, 4]. Prof Arnall is a current member of The British Psychological Society (BPS) [5]. It is said by UK travel company Sky Travel to be the most depressing day of the year. It takes into account weather conditions and only applies to the Northern Hemisphere temperate zones. More

Brppke's Lagoon
For example, say a gal were lost on a desert island in the middle of the sea. Should she wait for lunch, or ruminate about who's to blame for her getting there? Is there anything to learn from being there? Are those coconuts just going to climb down?

Get up, dig for fresh water, find a way to scramble up the palm tree, bring a broken rock to cut down a coconut, which provides purified drinking fluid full of electrolytes and protein rich healthy fats in a delicious gel. Keep the shells. They'll come in handy for lots of things. Take a dip in the sea and gather some seaweed. Lay it out in the sun, which will make it very taste. Then the herb, root, fruit, and vegetable hunt begins. There's gathering to be done. Fire and cooking will come soon, and this forsaken wilderness will be converted into a paradise, a Blue Lagoon (based on the novel The Blue Lagoon).

Oh, but doesn't it feel so much better to feel sorry for ourselves?

What is Blue Monday?

Each January, a certain Monday carries a reputation for being the year’s most emotionally difficult day.

Known as "Blue Monday," it’s often linked with low moods, depleted motivation, and a post-holiday slump.

While the idea started as a publicity stunt, it has since become an annual reminder of something real and important: Mental health matters – especially when days are short and emotions feel heavy. In 2026, Blue Monday falls on January 19th.

Ram Dass (Dr. Richard Alpert) in India, meets guru

What is it? Blue Monday 2026 is observed on the third Monday in January and is often described as “the saddest day of the year.”

The label may be more symbolic than scientific, but the feelings it points to are common. After the holidays, many people experience a dip – financially, emotionally, and physically.

Cold weather, shorter daylight hours, and pressure to stick to resolutions can all contribute. More

Ouch, it's National Breakup Day ๐Ÿ’”

National Breakup Day: reflect, grow, move on
May the Force be with you...but not today.
(Big Fox News) Feb. 21, 2024: Today is National Breakup Day. (Is it because it's "2/21" -- "two, two, one" as in "couple, couple, single" as in "going, going, gone"? No, this is no May 4th, Star Wars Day, when we say, "May the 4th be with you." It's because it's a week after Valentine's Day and Boo was only sticking around to not be alone on the momentous triumph for Kama/Cupid (Mara/Eros) or to get a gift, dinner, and to avoid the humiliation of sitting alone at a restaurant on the biggest day of the year for daters, lovers, and soon to be heartbroken and pathetic hungry ghost humans).

Love hurts, and breaking up hurts worse. So hu-man up! Don't act like such a clingy ghost. That is to say, get out of Buddhist cosmology's Realm of Hungry Ghosts. If you can't help it, talk to addiction medicine specialist Dr. Gabor Matรฉ, who says we can become addicted to anything, even a partner (even though no person, sexual act, or substance is, in and of itself, addictive. If it were, everyone partaking would become an addict, and they don't. So why did we? It's because of our history of early childhood traumas. We are predisposed. That history combined with pleasant dopamine-pleasures = hardcore addiction. And today is the day we are disposed.

Now are ye undeceived.*

It gives singles -- and even those who are attached in a committed relationship, marriage, or handfasting -- a day to reflect on past relationships and realize our own personal growth gained from those experiences.
Why do people break up? Top 5 reasons
The Linda Lindas play Bear Mtn for KROQ
Feb. 21, 2025: The five fastest ways to get broken up with are: (5) hogging the remote (taking too much ownership of the TV, the complaint of 15% of partners), (4) fake listening (failing to communicate because of distraction, ADHD, and not listening), (3) bad money management (splurging, gambling, no control of finances), (2) forgetting [Is it forgetting?], and (1) smoking (the worst thing a partner can do for 64% of people about to breakup with us). Note that neither stinking, snoring, nor cheating made the list. Lesbian Ally Johnson looked it up and presented it to horny hetero co-host Klein on KROQ this morning.
Nothing hurts worse than realizing the person you were in love with is an evil jerk
I'll never write a spiteful song about this guy. He's perfect. And we'll always be happy!
.
Let's stand by this star as the world burns.
*American author Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote an allegory, the climactic part of which reads: "by the blaze of the hell-kindled torches, the wretched man beheld his Faith, and the wife her husband, trembling before that unhallowed altar.

“Lo! there ye stand, my children,” said the figure, in a deep and solemn tone, almost sad, with its despairing awfulness, as if his once angelic [now demonic] nature could yet mourn for our miserable [human] race.

“Depending upon one another’s hearts, ye had still hoped that virtue were not all a dream! Now are ye undeceived! — Evil is the nature of [hu]mankind. Evil must be your only happiness. Welcome, again, my children, to the communion of your race!”

“Welcome!” repeated the fiend-worshippers, in one cry of despair and triumph. And there they stood, the only pair, as it seemed, who were yet hesitating on the verge of wickedness, in this dark world.

A basin was hollowed, naturally, in the rock. Did it contain water, reddened by the lurid light? or was it blood? or, perchance, a liquid flame? Herein did the Shape of Evil dip his hand, and prepare to lay the mark of baptism upon their foreheads, that they might be partakers of the mystery of sin, more conscious of the secret guilt of others, both in deed and thought, than they could now be of their own.

The husband cast one look at his pale wife, and Faith at him. What polluted wretches would the next glance show them to each other, shuddering alike at what they disclosed and what they saw!

“Faith! Faith!” cried the husband. “Look up to Heaven, and resist the Wicked One!”

Whether Faith obeyed, he knew not. Hardly had he spoken, when he found himself amid calm night and solitude, listening to a roar of the wind, which died heavily away through the forest. He staggered against the rock, and felt it chill and damp, while a hanging twig, that had been all on fire, besprinkled his cheek with the coldest dew ("Young Goodman Brown" classic American literature, 1835 short story about 17th century Puritan New England).

If only the Buddha had had anything to say about suffering

On many occasions, being asked questions, the Buddha reminded people that he only really taught two things. Any guesses? Did he teach magic and koans? Yin and yang? Mojo and moxie? The Kama Sutra and The Art of Not Giving a F***?

No. Of course, it was suffering (dukkha) and the end of suffering (nirvana). Why would anyone "teach suffering"? The Buddha had to make clear what "suffering" means. He defined it very handily and broadly, a functional definition for the cure he is about to present. What is the use of being told there's a cure if we haven't realized what disease we have been suffering from? "Pain" is much broader than we've imagined, as it includes disappointment, frustration, loss, separation, and even the excruciating agony of heartbreak.

But that's so pessimistic!

No, it isn't. It's a setup for the presentation of the antidote, solution, cure -- the path of practice to bring ALL suffering to a final end. We never even imagined we could bring it to an end, hoping death would do that for us. Death does not do that at all! Why? There is rebirth, and the reason there is rebirth is because there is craving and karma as yet to bring about its many results of all our skillful and unskillful deeds.

ALL disappointment, unsatisfactoriness, and woe CAN be brought to an end, a final end for it to never arise again. That is the great optimism of Buddhism, the "good news" of the Buddha's message to a benighted world of humans and devas (light beings, shining ones).

Suffering (dukkha): Disappointment is one of the Three Universal Marks of Existence. Various sutras sum up how cognitive processes result in our aversion (resistance, hate, fear, revulsion) to unpleasant things and experiences as we are moved to crave, grasp at, and cling to pleasure (sukha), keeping us in saแนƒsฤra, the Cycle of Death and Rebirth. It is at the root of the Five Aggregates clung to as "self": (re)birth is suffering, aging, illness, death, sorrow, lamentation, mental pain, grief, and despair are s; suffering, asociation with the unloved, separation from the loved, NOT GETTING what one wants, getting what one does not want, all of this is "suffering." In brief, the Five Aggregates clung to as self (khandha, skandhas) are suffering.

The Four Noble Truths are Buddhism in a nutshell because they present the whole of the path of practice in four ennobling (enlightening) statements, like the assessment of a master physician:
  1. Diagnosis: There is a disease (suffering)
  2. Etiology: There is a cause of that disease (craving rooted in ignorance and associated with aversion)
  3. Prognosis: There is a solution
  4. Cure: There is way to the solution (magga, the path).
Early emphasis is on the importance of developing liberating insight (vipassana) to penetrate these fundamental truths about existence is key, and that insight is arrived at by the path of purification, the path to freedom, which is calm leading to samma samadhi, the meditative absorptions (jhanas), to reach a foundation of balanced stillness and intensification of mind able to penetrate them. It is not by thinking or study, belief or powerful faith. One needs to experience these truths until they are self-evident, not statements, not assessments, not doctrines.

The fourth truth is the general Ennobling Eightfold Path, but there is a more detailed summary enumerated in the 37 Requisites of Awakening/Enlightenment (bodhipakkhiya-dhamma).

On being a girl, now a woman: MTV's Daria

The Take, 6/21/22; Kelly Ani, Dhr. Seven, Ashley Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

What Daria says about the 1990s (and today)
(The Take) Mike Judge's "Daria Morgendorffer" made it cool to be a wry and cynical loner. This teen girl who didn’t care about popularity or trends was the picture-perfect example of ‘90s alienation. She was a surprising character for a channel that often sold brash, extroverted, or overtly sexualized versions of womanhood during that same period.

What if Daria were around today, might she be just like Drugstore June?

Years later, Daria still resonates with anyone who’s ever questioned whether the problem is you or the system you’re living in – and it can help us understand cultural changes that were happening back in the 1990s.

Sad song of the past: "Forgiven" with Alanis

Alanis Morrisette live, studio; Eds., Wisdom Quarterly

You cut his dick and nearly drowned him?!!
Wow, the beautiful and talented Canadian Alanis Morrisette rose to prominence with a great introductory album, Jagged Little Pill (1995), shattering all kinds of records. How could one person be so talented with such a warbly voice? Content, authenticity, really pouring her guts out or having a good co-writer to add that theater scene that Full House protagonist says he doesn't remember happening. "Ironic" isn't ironic, but how could "Forgiven" not have been a breakout hit? Would only recovering Catholics understand? C'mon, guilt is all over the Abrahamic faiths. More people must have gotten it. Ahh, it's unfair -- girls as the butt of that religion being the biggest fans (in total numbers) of that religion. But it hooks a person, and there's almost no way out. Too much fear, guilt, recriminations for even dreaming of leaving it behind. Caesar's Messiah: The Romans sure pulled off some powerful psyops in reinventing a faith for an empire to be taken in until there's no way out. Joseph Atwill explains it pretty well.
LYRICS: You know how us Catholic girls can be/ We make up for so much time, a little too late/ I never forgot it, confusing as it was/ No fun with no guilt feelings/ The sinners, the saviors, the loverless priests/ I'll see you next Sunday

[Chorus] We all had our reasons to be there/ We all had a thing or two to learn/ We all needed something to cling to/ So we did

I sang Alleluia in the choir (Alleluia)/ I confessed my darkest deeds to an envious man/ My brothers, they never went blind for what they did/ But I may as well have/ In the name of the Father, the Skeptic. and the Son/ I had one more stupid question

[Chorus]

What I learned I rejected, but I believe again/ I will suffer the consequence of this inquisition/ If I jump in this fountain, will I be forgiven?

[Chorus]

We all had delusions in our heads/ We all had our minds made up for us/ We had to believe in something/ So we did

We all had our reasons to be there/ We all had a thing to learn/ We all needed something to cling to/ So we did

So we did/ Ooh-ooh, I, I, I/ So we did

Happy International Break Up Day (12/11)

NZ Herald, 11/29/20: Ashley Wells, Seth Auberon (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly; flirtini.com
Ah, I'm not worried; there are plenty of fish in the sea! - But my bait isn't what it used to be.
.
Why December 11 is the day you're most likely to be dumped
Get out of here, man
It's that time of year again. The date most likely to spell doom for relationships is fast approaching. And unfortunately for the hopeless romantics among us, that day is yet to come. (Oh no, it's here!)

According to statistics, the most popular day to break up is December 11th, reports news.com.au. And the second most popular time of year to break up is in March, right after Valentine's Day, the original data reveals.
Ah, I feel down. They're not getting any bigger
The data, first collected by Information Is Beautiful in 2008, was compiled by statisticians who studied relationship status updates on social media and found that the most common breakup date falls two weeks before Christmas.

December is already filled with high pressure events, from the end of year work Christmas party to boozy catch-ups with friends we haven't seen since lockdown, and of course the mandatory family gatherings.

Why did it have to happen now of all days?
But couples are also faced with the dilemma of splitting their time between each other's families. Then there's the pressure of buying each other presents that aren't just another pair of socks, organizing holidays, traveling without driving each other crazy, and spending time with the kids during school holidays.

So some of us decide to hedge our bets and opt out of the relationship before the silly season hits.

This can't be happening. - But it is happening. - Wait! Let me tell you WHY it can't be.
.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, a dating expert revealed that the most important reason relationships end before Christmas is that people don't want to spend money on people they're not romantically interested in.

Dating coach James Preece said nobody wants to end things too close to Christmas. "And New Year is coming, which brings them the chance for a fresh start."

He believes Dec. 11 was the key day for couples to call it quits because they don't want to waste money on people they can't see a future with.

"Firstly, if someone is planning on a break up then they will want to get it over with before Christmas," he said. "There's no point buying presents and spending time with someone you aren't interested in.

"Secondly, it's party season and [our partners] can be quickly forgotten if you go out without them.

"Cheating and inappropriate flirting are the biggest causes of break ups.

"Finance can cause huge problems too, especially if one is spending lots and the other is trying to save." More
