• May we suggest using an acorn to produce an oak? And avoid watering its stem, but rather water around it to encourage it to grow strong roots far and wide.

What better way to celebrate Arbor Day than to plant our very own tree? It's an incredible experience watching a tree grow over the years.

Why did the Buddha love trees so much?

• One mark of goodness (Buddhist skillfulness, wholesomeness, unselfishness, selflessness, nongreed, letting go, generosity, loving-kindness, giving, dana, compassion, thoughtfulness) is "planting trees the shade of which we will never sit under" because they take so long to grow. Why should we be unselfish? One good reason might be to look around and realize that we have shade because of the kindness of others (Native Americans, land caretakers, and bhumma-devas or woodland fairies and angelic light beings) who came before us. That should be reason enough. But this reflection may also help: Just as we cannot harm others without simultaneously harming others, we cannot help others without simultaneously helping ourselves. It may not be obvious, but that's just the way it is by a natural regularity we can call karma, the law of receiving back in kind what we put out into the world, not only immediately but also after a long time.

It's an unbelievable feeling knowing that we made it happen. Don't print this article! Deforestation is a huge problem with many implications, and reducing our paper usage is the most immediate way to make a difference.

We can go a step further by seeking out brands with sustainable business practices (not just greenwashing by corporations and the PR firms they hire to sell sell sell), and by adopting strong composting and recycling habits.

  EDITOR'S NOTE: Let's not just recycle the way they do in Hollywood. Let's precycle the way they have been doing in Berkeley for decades. What's that? It's considering where something is coming from, what waste it is producing by reducing, reusing, and recycling. Pre-cycling is thinking ahead of time, maybe even thinking out for seven generations like the Indigenous peoples of America, the Native American tribes, and the Buddha spoke of doing. The Buddha said that? When asked about benefiting the deceased by the "transfer of merit," the Buddha explained that we have relatives. And if we do something for one who is not in a place able to receive it, it will still benefit our other relations out for seven generations. It's an odd coincidence to mention seven if the two are not related, so either they both knew something or the Buddha's teaching reached the Americas just like American historians like Edward P. Vining (An Inglorious Columbus) and Rick Fields (How the Swans Came to the Lake) have documented happened centuries ago. How can we "transfer" good karma because isn't "karma" one's own doing? Yes, it is, but it can be transferred in this way, according to the Buddha. There are worlds one may be reborn into that provide little to no opportunity for doing good. If one has a deed done on his or her behalf AND one appreciates, approves, applauds, and rejoices on account of that, then that one so doing is producing lots of skillful (good, meritorious) mental karma. And that will be of benefit there in that place. Only some places allow for this transfer to take place, but the Buddha said that our "relatives" extend out for seven generations, and with so many beings involved, it is impossible that we would be without being in just such a place to receive our transferred karma. So it will not go to waste, and who knows? It may be that we find ourselves reborn in such a destination needing help and overflowing with gratitude (like the "grateful dead") when a relative does something good on our behalf.

Take a hike -- the good kind! Hiking is a great escape from the doldrums of everyday life, and it's an activity that's great for people across a wide age range.

• Where better to do it than out in nature? "Forest bathing" is a practice of doing it in the buff or at least scantily clad to absorb the dappled sunshine and negative ions as the trees and green environment exhales after breathing in what we exhale. It's an opportune time to be mindful rather than worried all full of discursive thoughts. 

Why We Love National Arbor Day

The Buddha, ready to pass away into final nirvana and make an end of all rebirth, walked faraway until he came to twin sal trees, reclined between them, and bid the simulation farewell.

Natural beauty is one reason. With so much of our population living in big cities, it's easy to lose sight of nature's greatness and splendor. Sniff a frangipani. Inhale the sappy ooze of a pine. Behold a cherry blossom.

Our planet needs love. Despite some disagreement about whether or not global warming is real and the fault of irresponsible corporations and thoughtless consumerism, there's no debating that keeping our planet healthy helps to keep us healthy. We avoid polluting, so let's avoid over-consuming.

There's a lot to love about a holiday that helps make our planet a better place. There's a global movement with over 40 nations having their own version of Arbor Day. Therefore, it's safe to say that this holiday is worldwide.

Astonishing photographs of a 90-foot statue of the Hindu God Lord Hanuman — the third largest statue in the U.S.A. — have been obtained by Newsweek, following the unveiling ceremony in Texas.

The monument, known as the Statue of Union, stands at the Sri Ashta Lakshmi Temple in Sugar Land, Texas. Lord Hanuman is depicted as human, but with the head and tail of a monkey, as is customary.

The Sanskrit word pratiṣṭhā, which in general usage means "placement" of a murti (embodied solid object), is translated by Apte as "the consecration of a vessel or dwelling" [3].

The adjective pratiṣṭha means "installed" [4]. Prana means "life force, breath, spirit." The phrase Prana Pratishtha is a ritual that means "placing the breath-of-life into the image to establish it" [WQ] or "bringing life to the temple" [2].

It is also referred to as murti sthapana (image placement inside the temple). Traditionally, this was the step when the eye of the murti was sculpted open [2], inside the inner sanctuary (garbhagriha, the Purusha space) of a Hindu temple.

This ritual typically involves a devotional ritual (puja) and the chanting of Sanskrit mantras as the deity is moved from outside into the center place.

It includes inviting the deity to become a resident guest of the temple, bathing and cleansing it, similar to welcoming a revered guest after a long journey.

This is followed by dressing and seating the deity in a place of comfort, with the image's face oriented towards the east (signifying the sunrise), followed by a Nyasa ceremony with hymns (act of touching different parts of the murti, symbolizing the presence of various gods as sensory organs:

The Hindu priest recites specific mantras and performs rituals to infuse the idol with the animating life force or "holy spirit" (prana).

Devotees often seek the deity's blessings at this point. The ritual also includes the spraying of scented water and flowers, with the Chaksu͡unmilan ceremony (Sanskrit chakshu unmilan, "opening of the divine eye"), marking the high point of the ritual [6]. (The Best Film Archives) March 12, 2017. Don't Be a Sucker! is a short educational film produced by the U.S. War Department in 1943 and re-released in 1947.

The propaganda film depicts the rise of Nazism in Germany and warns North Americans against repeating the mistakes of European intolerance made in Nazi Germany. It emphasizes that Americans will lose their country if they let themselves be turned into "suckers" by the forces of fanaticism and racist hatred.

The film was made to make the case for the desegregation of the United States armed forces by simply revealing the connection between prejudice and fascism.

This film is not propaganda. To the contrary, it [it is more like propaganda against propaganda because it] teaches how to recognize and reject propaganda, as was used by the Nazis to promote to bigotry and intimidation.

It shows how prejudice can be used to divide the population for a political party to gain power. [Here's lookin' at cha, MAGAots.] Far more significantly, it then shows how such tactics can be defanged by friendly persuasion. Protection of liberty is a unifying and practical way to live peacefully.

PLOT: A young American (secret society) Free Mason is taken in by the message of a soap-box orator who asserts that all good jobs in the United States are being taken by the so-called minorities, domestic and foreign. He falls into a conversation with a Hungarian professor who witnessed the rise of Nazism in Berlin, who tells him of the pattern of events that brought Hitler to power in Germany and how Germany's anti-democratic groups split the country into helpless minorities, each hating the other.

The professor concludes by pointing out that America is composed of many numerical minorities, but all are united as "Americans."

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND/CONTEXT

Nazi Germany is the common English name for the period in German history from 1933 to 1945, when Germany was governed by a dictatorship under the control of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party (NSDAP).

Under Mr. Hitler's rule, Germany was transformed into a fascist state in which the Nazi Party took totalitarian control over nearly all aspects of life. The official name of the state was Deutsches Reich from 1933 to 1943 and Großdeutsches Reich ("Greater German Reich") from 1943 to 1945.

The period is also known under the names the Third Reich (German Drittes Reich) and the National Socialist Period (German Zeit des Nationalsozialismus, abbreviated NS-Zeit).

The Nazi regime came to an end after the Allied Powers destroyed Germany in May 1945, ending World War II in Europe.

Mr. Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany by the president of the Weimar Republic Paul von Hindenburg on January 30, 1933. The Nazi Party then began to eliminate all political opposition and consolidate its power.

Hindenburg died on August 2, 1934, and Hitler became dictator of Germany by merging the powers and offices of the chancellery and presidency.

A national referendum held August 19, 1934, confirmed Hitler as sole Führer ("leader") of Germany. All power was centralized in Hitler's person, and his word became above all laws.

Racism, especially antisemitism, was a central feature of that regime. The Germanic peoples (Nordic race) were considered by Nazis to be the purest branch of the Aryan race. They were therefore viewed as the "master race."

Millions of Jews and others deemed undesirable by the state were imprisoned in concentration camps [and died mostly of disease and poor conditions, with gas chambers being used to delouse them with the pesticide Zyklon B, which was viewed or purposely misinterpreted for propaganda purposes as Jews and other undesirables as being] murdered in [what came to be called] the Holocaust.

Opposition to Hitler's rule was ruthlessly suppressed by violent party members. Members of the liberal, socialist, and communist opposition were killed, imprisoned, or exiled.

The Christian churches were also oppressed, with many leaders imprisoned [though the Nazis were Christians, composed of Catholics, Lutherans, Spiritualists, and members of occult groups].

Education focused on racial biology, population control policy, and fitness for military service. Career and educational opportunities for women were curtailed. Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels (Minister of Propaganda) made effective use of film, mass rallies, and Hitler's hypnotizing speeches to control public opinion.

The totalitarian government controlled artistic expression, promoting specific art forms and banning or discouraging others.

Following the Allied invasion of Normandy (June 6, 1944), Germany was conquered by the Soviet Union from the east and the other Allied powers from the west. It capitulated within a year.

The victorious Allies (with their red Russian partners) initiated a policy of deNAZIfication and put many of the surviving Nazi leaders on trial for war crimes at the Nuremberg trials [except for the many the US government snuck in to the USA to work in producing weapons of mass destruction and secret service agencies like the CIA].

Buddha's 32 Marks of a Great Man

These "marks" (lakkhana) are not a Buddhist invention. Rather, they have a long history in Vedic Brahmanism.

The amalgam of Eastern philosophy from India is now called "Hinduism," although there was never any such term in India, nor was there the idea of a "religion" separate from life. There were various dharmas (schools of thought). But almost all were centered around traditions handed down in the great epics, Aryan writings, and great commentaries.

The Buddha inadvertently contributed that by revolutionizing thought on stagnant traditions, reviving a great deal of "Hindu" scholarship. Buddhists went on to found a remarkable new Dharma rooted in Indian fundamentals but radically breaking from many traditions with a universal message.

Part of the old tradition were these "marks of a great man." The Buddha was remarkably facile with incorporating widespread beliefs and re-purposing them towards enlightened ends. Therefore, his use of an old tradition, imbuing it with new significance, does not necessarily mean he was condoning the belief.

Instead, he was often utilizing skillful means to teach. These marks were a convention well known among leading philosophers and nobles. The Buddha explained them to reinforce the teaching of karma, which contrary to modern opinion was neither well known, thoroughly understood, nor universally accepted among his contemporaries and their followers.

1. Well-supported feet. Firm undertaking
2. Wheels beneath the soles of the feet. Great retinues
3. Projecting heels. Long life
4. Long fingers and toes. Long life
5. Soft and tender hands and feet. Well-united with people
6. Net-like hands and feet. Well-united with people
7. Ankles raised like conch shells. Becomes the best
8. Lower part of the leg is like an antelope's. Gets the best things quickly
9. Can touch and rub around his knees with both palms, while standing without bending.
   Great wealth
10. The part concealed by garments is covered by a hood. Many sons
11. Skin shines like gold. Get finest furnishings and garments
12. Subtle skin such that dirt and sweat do not adhere to body. Great wisdom
