Where did Celts really come from?

(Up Close - Documentaries) Where did the Celts really come from?

Ancient meditation? Celtic god Cernunnos
Who were the Celts? Were they the meditator depicted above (Irish Zen Buddhism. : r/aiArt)? Buddhism has arrived in Ireland to be sure: Buddhists open first Zen center in Ireland (Buddhistdoor Global). American Roshi Brad Warner went from Los Angeles to check it out: Brad Warner's visit to Zen Buddhism Ireland (Zen Buddhism Ireland). But long before that, it was an Irishman who became the world's first Western Buddhist monk: Venerable U Dhammaloka, the original Dharma Bum. See: thebuddhistcenter.com/dublin.

Burning Man: 5 things everyone gets wrong

How the Burning Man festival has influenced Silicon Valley innovations over the years
I brought my family and gave them ACID - not LSD, just acetic acid, vinegar, for our tummies.

I went for the first time. Here are 5 things everyone gets wrong (Anneta Konstantinides/Insider)
Isn't Burning Man just a bunch of Mad Max cosplay wannabees in the desert? Has to be! Look at 'em
.
This is "The Man" burned to stick it to The Man
I went to Burning Man for the first time in 2023 — and many people are wrong about the event.

They think Burning Man is a big music festival only attended by celebrities and CEOs. But the truth is Burning Man is full of regular people who work year-round to create an incredible sense of community.
What is this crowd of ordinary folk looking at? Burning Couple in the distance. Fire's cool.
.
Enter if you dare: "The Orgy Dome"
Over the last few years, Burning Man has become known as a haven for Silicon Valley tech bros and Instagram influencers, who cough up thousands of dollars to party in "Mad Max" desert cosplay.

Mad Max, the original in the Outback of Australia
But when I went for the first time last year, I realized there's a lot that people get wrong about the legendary annual event. Now that I've done my own inaugural "Dust Angel" and gotten the full playa experience, I'm ready to correct some of the biggest Burning Man myths. Here are five things everyone gets wrong.

Let's go, Mark. - Where? - I'll kick your @$$!

became more prominent as it began attracting high profile Burners like billionaires Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk, including supermodels like Heidi Klum and Cindy Crawford. More via Yahoo
How this event became a city

(DamiLee) What is this magical communion of humanity? This is not a capitalist endeavor like Coachella or Lollapalooza. This is the peoples' event, powered by participants and their creativity. It's like nothing else in the world. There's a reason why 70,000 make it out to desert in a journey as tough as the good old mystery rave days before they got commercial.

Beautiful Buddhist courtesan Ambapali

Āmrapālī (also known as "Ambapālikaka," "Ambapali," or "Amra") was a celebrated nagarvadhu (royal courtesan) of the Republic of Vaishali (located in present-day state of Bihar, India) in ancient proto-India around 500 BC [1, 2, 3].

Ambapali also won the title of rajnartaki (court dancer) [4]. Following the Buddha's Teachings, or Buddha-Dharma, she became an arahant, a fully enlightened disciple.

She is mentioned in the ancient Pali language texts and Buddhist traditions (āgama sutras), particularly in conjunction with the Buddha staying at her mango (amba) grove, Ambapali-vana, which she later donated to the Sangha (Monastic Order), where the Buddha taught the famous Ambapalika Sutra [5, 6, 7, 8].

The legend of Ambapali originated in the Buddhist Rebirth (Jataka) Tales some 1,500 years ago.
Early life
I can help it: I was born this way [by past karma]
Ambapali was born around 600-500 BCE, to Mahanama and an unknown mother.

Etymologically, the variants of her name derive from a combination of two Sanskrit words, amra (Pali amba), meaning "mango," and pallawa, meaning "young leaves or sprouts" [9].

It is said that she was spontaneously born at the foot of a mango tree in one of the royal gardens in Vaishali — which resulted in her name [10].

Even as a young maiden, Ambapali was exceptionally beautiful and ethereal. It is said that a feudal lord by the name of Mahanaman was so enchanted by the young Ambapali's beauty that he abandoned his kingdom and moved to Ambara Village, a small hamlet in Vaishali in present-day Muzaffarpur [11].

As a courtesan

I will dance to please the royals.
Vaishali was the capital city of the Licchavi tribe, one of the eight warrior (Pali khattiya, Sanskrit kshatriya) clans that had united to form the Vajjian confederacy [12].

The king was elected by an electoral college consisting of princes and nobles from the kshatriya clans. It was customary that the most beautiful women in the land, rather than marrying one man, dedicated themselves to the pleasure of many [13].

Ambapali grew up to be a lady of extraordinary charm and grace and was talented in many art forms [Geisha-girl style, a well education companion rather than someone simply providing sexual services][13].

Many young nobles desired her company. When King Manudev of Vaishali, saw Ambapali perform a dance in the city, he plotted to "own" her as a possession. He murdered Ambapali's childhood love and would-be-groom, Pushpakumar, on the day of their wedding.

Afterwards he made an official announcement declaring Ambapali as the "bride" of Vaishali — that is, the nagarvadhu ("royal courtesan"). She was also bestowed with the title of Vaishali Janpad Kalayani (Pali janapada kalyani "the belle of the land" of Vaisali), given to the most beautiful and talented girl of the kingdom for a period of seven years.

Ambapali had the right to choose her lovers, but according to the aforementioned custom, she could not be committed to any one man.

After being declared a nagarvadhu [14], her talent and beauty attracted so many men that the glory of Vaishali during this period is often attributed to Ambapali's fame [13]. The price to see Ambapali's art form was 50 karshapanas (Pali kahapanas, Bactrian gold from Afghanistan/Gandhara) per night, and her treasury grew much larger than the treasuries of some kings [13].

Who would objectify and judge kids' beauty?
It is said that Ambapali was declared the "most beautiful" girl at the age of 11 and was later made nagarvadhu. She also is a celebrated rajnartaki (court dancer) in the ancient Vaishali. Ambapali was also proficient in music, dance, hunting, archery, horse handling, and so on. She had great love for classical songs and dance [4, 15].

Legends associated with Ambapali
Ambapali and King Bimbisara
Carving of the Buddha and Ambapali
Stories of her beauty travelled to the ears of famous Buddhist King Bimbisara, ruler of the hostile neighboring kingdom of Magadha, where the Buddha often stays. The king attacked Vaishali and took refuge in Ambapali's house.

King Bimbisara was a good musician. Before long, Ambapali and King Bimbisara fell in love. When she learned his true identity, Ambapali asked King Bimbisara to leave and cease his war.

King Bimbisara, smitten with love, did as she asked. In the eyes of the people of Vaishali, this incident made him a coward. Later, Ambapali bore him a son named Vimala Kondanna.

Ajatashatru (patricidal Prince Ajatasattu), King Bimbisara's son by Queen Chellana (according to Jain tradition) or Queen Kosala Devi (according to Buddhist tradition), later invaded Vaishali due to a dispute with his brothers.

He was so moved by her beauty that when Ambapali was imprisoned, he burned the whole of Vaishali. Almost everyone died in the massacre, except his beloved Ambapali, but when she saw the condition of her motherland, she renounced her love for him.

Ambapali and the Buddha
(We're not really Ambapali. We just play her in
a Wisdom Quarterly play about her life).
In Buddhist texts, Ambapali is noted as having had the opportunity to serve food to the Buddha during his last visit to Vaishali, shortly before his passing into final nirvana [16].

Ambapali attended his sermon at a nearby grove and was so deeply moved by it that she invited him for a meal at her quarters [17]. In other accounts, it is stated that the Buddha himself took shelter in her mango grove and was visited by Ambapali, who paid her obeisance to him and then extended the invitation [18].

The Buddha consented to her proposal of offering him a meal with silence, as was his custom [17]. On her way back, her chariot came face to face with that of the princely nobles of Vaishali who were also rushing to invite the Buddha to accept their offer of a meal with them.

The Buddha towering in neighboring Kapilavatthu
They berated her by calling her a "mango-woman" and asked her, as a woman of ill repute (a courtesan), to move her vehicle aside and let her social superiors pass on the single lane road.

It is then that she announced that the Buddha had already accepted her invitation and was coming to her house for a meal offering. The princes were upset and offered her gold in return for the privilege of hosting the Buddha, but she refused [18, 19].

The Buddha also turned them down when they asked him to accept their offer, having already committed to Ambapali's charitable donation.

The Buddha recognized her beauty and advised his disciples to be mindful in her presence because they easily become infatuated with her if they did not remain mindful [19]. [The Buddha advised monastics to imagine beautiful members of the other sex to be thought of as daughters or mothers, sons or fathers, so as not to succumb to their physical allure or beyond-physical charm.]

Ambapali received the Buddha with her retinue in her grand residence, which had been specially decorated for the occasion [20]. It was no less than the palace of any king [20], such was the wealth she had amassed.

At the conclusion of the meal offering, she offered to the Buddha and his spiritual community (Sangha) her entire property, including her mango groves, which became the venue for several sutras on mindfulness [20].

Awakened lay Buddhist
Why is the Buddha so famous throughout Asia?
Soon thereafter, she renounced her position as courtesan and court dancer, accepted the Buddhist way, and remained an active supporter of the Buddha's Sangha. She dedicated her life to the service of the poor and the destitute [20].

On growing up, Ambapali's son, Vimala Kondanna, also became a Buddhist monk and a renowned Buddhist elder (thera) [16].For having followed the Buddha's Teachings, the Dharma, she had become a fully enlightened disciple. More

First tattooed man in America was Irish

Carnet de voyage - James F. O’Connell, découvreur de Nan Madol (tahiti-infos.com)

They danced, so I'll dance an Irish jig for them.
James F. O’Connell, the “Tattooed Man,” arrived in New York City in 1835, causing much consternation. If a lady so much as glanced at him, her future children would be born just as hideously inked as he was — covered in thick, patterned black bands that curved down and around their hands, arms, legs, and backs. Or so the churchmen told their flocks.

O’Connell, an Irish sailor, acquired his full-body tattoo during a stint as a castaway in the South Pacific’s Caroline Islands during the late 1820s and early 1830s.

After their ship sunk, Irishman O’Connell and his shipmate, George Keenan, were taken in by inhabitants of the island of Pohnpei — who were not cannibals, O’Connell emphatically states in his memoir.

Within a few days, the two were bustled off to an isolated hut, where five or six women, “savage printers” armed with ink and thorns, set about providing the newcomers with the markings that would smooth their way into the community.

The resulting tattoo, called pelipel, made O’Connell “fully human” in the world of the South Pacific, writes Juniper Ellis in her book Tattooing the World (Columbia University Press, 2008), for which the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) provided research support. More: neh.gov

The Dharma Bum
There's something about the Irish, going from a tiny island under the thumb of a neighboring island, pushed out into the world as a diaspora that saw the sidhe, Tuatha de Danan, the wee people, the spirits, and creatures of the Emerald Isle spread out into all corners of the world and the public imagination. The neighboring island forced itself on everyone, like the last militant vestige of the Roman Empire (the remaining force in Rome slipping on a sheep's disguise in an exhibition of soft power that conquered the planet or plane more deeply than British weapons and forces.

U Dhammaloka (right) with Burmese monks
How did the Irish win their way into the hearts of all, particularly with so many redheads? One of the most prominent and important of the Irish was named O'Connell (Laurence), who became the first Westerner to ordain as a Theravada Buddhist monk, Ven. U Dhammaloka (pronounced \ooh-dah-mah-low-kuh\), the "U" being an Burmese honorific.

He traveled by boat to California then by ship to Asia, where he made a name for himself as a freethinker and Buddhist, opposing Christian missionaries, ended up all the way in Mandalay, Burma, in a Buddhist monastery.

Another O'Connell (James F.), not JFO, also made a splash in the Pacific among the people of Pohnpei among the Caroline Islands. He was a sailor on a boat that wrecked, landing him in Micronesia and this adventure.

How an Irishman's tattoo changed history

.
I was happy to be a Buddhist monk for freedom
(Rare Earth) James O'Connell, 18, survived a shipwreck along with seven others only to become the most famous Western man in Pohnpei. Ah, coming home after being enslaved since your late teens only to have your own society condemn you as Satanic for what they did to you and then be forced to headline a traveling circus freakshow until you died. No matter where you go, the tattoos always speak first. This is the (self-told, probably exaggerated for circus reasons) story of P.T. Barnum's original freak success story, "James O'Connell, America's first tattooed man."

Conspiracy? Trump shooter was a Jew?

Why would young Jewish Republican Tommy Matt Crooks shoot "America's Hitler"?

Trump shooter's 'Jewish Link,' 'staged' attack: Netizens doubt 'perfect' assassination bid
(Times of India) Many conspiracy theories are doing the rounds on social media in the aftermath of the assassination attempt on former U.S. Pres. Donald Trump. Many netizens pointed out that the attack at a rally in Pennsylvania on July 13th was "staged" and "looked too perfect." Some even highlighted the 20-year-old shooter's Jewish link.

[No one shoots at hated genocidal tyrant Bibi Netanyahu, but someone takes shots at biased, pro-Israeli Trump? It seems hard to believe, as hard as all of the 9-11 as a massive Jewish conspiracy conjectures even with their telling evidence and odd and improbable film crew getting the perfect shot because they knew exactly where to stand and when and a very odd camera angle that just got propaganda footage by accident or the Jewish dancing in the streets because this "terrorist attack" meant the US would have to join the war against the Muslim world in Muslim countries Israel hates and furthered its hope that a rift would form between the US and Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, and other states.]

To be a soldier...or dare to refuse? (sutra)

(Owen Jones) Nov. 6, 2023: Atalya Ben-Abba is an Israeli conscientious objector: as a teenager forced to enlist, she was sent to prison for refusing to join the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) because of her opposition to Israel's illegal occupation of the West Bank. SUTRA: Considering becoming a soldier? You may want to reconsider...
Do it, Yudas, join the army. It's very patriotic.
The Headman Yodhajiva went to the Buddha, bowed, and sat respectfully to one side. Sitting there he said to the Buddha:

"Venerable, I have heard that it has been passed down by the ancient teaching lineage of warriors that 'When a warrior strives and exerts in battle, if others strike one and slay one while one is striving and exerting in battle, then with the breakup of the body, after death, one is reborn in the company of those shining ones (devas) slain in battle.' What does the Buddha say about that?"

That's what warriors say. Is it right?
"Headman, enough. Set that question aside. Do not ask it."

But a second...and a third time the Headman Yodhajiva asked: "...What does the Buddha say about that?"

"Headman, apparently, I am unable to get by by simply saying, 'Headman, enough, set that question aside. Do not ask it.' So I will just say:

[Why it's bad karma]
Look, Palestine, I'm a settler colonialist
"When a warrior strives and exerts in battle, that person's mind is already seized, debased, and misdirected by such thoughts as: 'May these living beings be struck down, slaughtered, destroyed, annihilated. May they be exterminated!'

"If others strike one down and slay one while one is striving and exerting in battle, then with the breakup of the body, after death, one is reborn in a hell called the Realm of Those Slain in Battle.

"But if one holds some view such as this: 'When a warrior strives and exerts in battle, if others then strike one down and slay one while one is striving and exerting in battle, then with the breakup of the body, after death, one is reborn in the company of shining ones (devas) slain in battle,' that is one's wrong view.

"Now, I declare, there are two destinations for a person possessed of wrong view -- either hell [Note 1] or the animal realm [rebirth into the womb of an animal]."

But I wanted to go to Valhalla by killing people!
When this was said, the Headman Yodhajiva began to sob and burst into tears.

[The Buddha consoled him saying:] "That is what I could not get through to you by simply saying, 'Headman, enough, set that question aside. Do not ask it.'"

"But, venerable, I am not crying because of what the Buddha said to me, but rather because I have been deceived, lied to, and fooled for so long by that ancient teaching lineage of warriors who said [that nonsense] (SN 42.3).

[Reaction]
I don't want to enlist like others might.
At the conclusion of sutras there is usually this text because of a person being overcome with great confidence (saddha, "faith") in the Buddha and the Dharma (the Teaching) and those successfully instructed in it. It so fills a person directly instructed by the Buddha that one usually exclaims (as in SN 42.2):

"Excellent, venerable, excellent! It is just as if one were to set upright what had been overturned, or revealed what was hidden, or shown the way to one who was lost, or carried a lamp into the dark so that those with eyes could see visible forms!

I shoulda listened to Dharma and not the CIA
"In the same way has the Buddha — in many ways — made the Truth (Dhamma) clear. I go for guidance to the Buddha, to the Dhamma, and to the Sangha [noble ones, the community enlightened disciples]. May the Buddha remember me as being a lay follower who has gone for guidance (sarana) from this day forward for life."
  1. Sārājita niraya: not so much "hell" as the "downward path" of one reborn in the subhuman plane among other warriors/killers. It is a niraya ("downward path") in which those who die in battle are reborn (S.iv.311). The Commentary (SA.iii.100) states that it is not a distinctive "purgatory," but rather a part of Avīci (the lowest infernal "waveless" or uninterrupted, incessant, interminable hell though not eternal), where fighters of all sorts fight on in their imagination. Cf. Sarañjita, according to G. P. Malalasekera's Dictionary of Pali Proper Names (palikanon.com)
