White worship: internal Asian racism

‘Seeking Asian Female’ on PBS Shows an Internet-Order Bride - The New York Times
.
I'm a beneficiary as half white and only half Asian
White worship is internalized racism, a form of internalized oppression, defined by sociologist Karen D. Pyke as the "internalization of racial oppression by the racially subordinated" [1].

Robin Nicole Johnson in her study The Psychology of Racism, emphasizes that internalized racism involves both "conscious and unconscious acceptance of a racial hierarchy in which a presumed superior race [is] consistently ranked above other races."

These definitions encompass a wide range of instances not limited to:
  • a belief in negative stereotypes,
  • adaptations to cultural standards, and
  • thinking that supports the status quo (i.e., denying that racism exists) [2].

We're "status symbols" in Korea
Internalized racism as a phenomenon is a direct product of a racial classification system and is found across different racial groups and regions around the world where "race" exists as a social construct [1].

In these places, internalized racism can have adverse effects on those who experience it. For example, high internalized racism scores have been linked to poor health outcomes among
  • Caribbean Black women,
  • higher propensity for violence among African American young males, and
  • increased domestic violence among Native American populations in the US [3, 4, 5]. More

Latin community colorism, too?
"Latin has no [single] skin tone." (Latin America has ALL of the colors, shades, and tones).

Colorism: racist legacy brought from Europe to Americas
Casta (Spanish "caste") is a term that means "lineage" [institutional racism] in Spanish and Portuguese and has historically been used as a racial and social identifier.

In the context of the European Spanish Empire in the Americas, the term also refers to a theoretical framework which says that colonial society operated under a hierarchical race-based "caste "caste system."

From the outset, colonial Spanish America resulted in widespread intermarriage: unions of Spaniards (Españoles), indigenous people (Indios, "Indians," indigenas), and Africans (Negros, lit. "Blacks").

Colonists, do we internalize racism?
Basic mixed-race categories that appeared in official colonial documentation were mestizo ("Mixed," "Blended"), generally offspring of a Spaniard and an Indigenous person; and mulatto, offspring of a Spaniard and a black African.

Many terms were used for people of mixed Spanish, Indigenous, and African ancestry in 18th-century casta paintings... More

Death of Doris Day: "Que Sera Sera" (video)

Top Famous Tube; Zennmann; Ashley Wells, CC Liu, Crystal Quntero (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Wholesome, sexy Doris Day
LYRICS: When I was just a little girl, I asked my mother, "What will I be? Will I be pretty? Will I be rich?" Here's what she said to me: "Que sera sera/Whatever will be will be. The future's not ours to see. Que sera sera/What will be will be." When I grew up and fell in love, I asked my sweetheart, "What lies ahead? Will we have rainbows day after day?" Here's what my sweetheart said: Que sera sera/Whatever will be will be. The future's not ours to see. Que sera sera/What will be will be." Now I have children of my own. They ask their mother: "What will I be? Will I be handsome? Will I be rich?" I tell them tenderly: "Que sera sera/Whatever will be will be. The future's not ours to see. Que sera sera/What will be will be. Que sera sera."

Look, she lived a long life because of her kindness to animals. But she was Hollywood.

Doris Day, Midnight Lace, 1960
OBITUARY: Doris Day (Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff, DorisDay.com), 97, was born on April 3, 1922 and died on May 13, 2019. She was German-American, born in Cincinnati and worked as a film actress, who was married to Al Jorden, Barry Comden, George Weidler, and Martin Melcher. She was an American actress, singer, and renowned animal welfare activist (DDAF).

German princess or American idol?
Best known for her performance in the romantic comedy Pillow Talk, which earned her an Academy Award nomination for the best actress in a leading role, was one of the most popular U.S. actresses in the 1950s and 1960s who could sing as demonstrated by her first hit recording "Sentimental Journey." She made more than 650 recordings, cementing her reputation as one of the most successful female singers of her era. Her singing and her natural flair for the performance led songwriters Jule Styne and Sammy Cahn to request her to audition for film roles, which led to her first movie, Romance on the High Seas. Blessed with flawless beauty Germans would be proud (particularly one former ruler) and a charming American personality and golden voice, Day soon became a much sought after Hollywood starlet. She was an animal lover from the very beginning and was actively involved in animal rights causes and animal welfare to the end.

Seth Auberon, Ashley Wells, Pfc. Sandoval, Wisdom Quarterly; HitFix; Kryz; The Firewall
In honor of the legendary actor, here are some favorite moments from his best films.
(Gene Wilder in Mel Brooks' "The Producers") "Springtime for Hitler and Germany/Deutschland is happy and gay/We're marching to a faster pace/Look out, here comes the Master Race/Springtime for Hitler and Germany/Winter for Poland and France/Springtime for Hitler and Germany/Come on Germans, go into your dance."

Jerome Silberman (June 11, 1933-August 29, 2016), known professionally as Gene Wilder, was an American stage and screen comic actor, screenwriter, film director, and author. Wilder began his career on stage, and made his screen debut in the TV-series Armstrong Circle Theatre in 1962. More

Best of Wilder

June 11, 2016 was the 83rd birthday of actor, writer, director Gene Wilder (RIP), one of the best-loved actors of his generation. While it has been almost 15 years since the world last saw Wilder on the screen, his talent is remembered fondly by fans. Here are The Firewall's Top 10 Gene Wilder Movies.

Mexican Elvis passes away: Juan Gabriel

Well, he was more of a flamboyant gay icon* ala Liberace, Michael Jackson, or honorary-Mexican Morrissey, who lived in L.A. (Santa Monica), recorded here, while selling more than 100 million albums around the world, mostly of the sentimental sort. He was so L.A. that he just wrapped up two sold out nights at the L.A. Forum 48 hours beforehand, playing a 3 hour final show that may have done him in, along with the weight and long-simmering heartbreak.

*Juan Gabriel was Mexico's gay icon — but he never spoke of his sexuality
(Los Angeles Times, Aug. 29, 2016) reporting from Mexico City
"Don't ask what you already know." (HC)
With his glittery capes, slinky dance moves and ultra-romantic lyrics, Mexican superstar Juan Gabriel was an unlikely king in a country known for its machismo. He never spoke about his sexuality, yet was widely assumed to be gay. It’s no surprise that the singer was an icon in Mexico’s gay subculture. But how was it that he came to be celebrated by the country’s Catholic, conservative and often homophobic mainstream? More

Richard Gere's Buddhism (Vajrayana)

[Vajrayana Buddhism's exalted priesthood, pomp and circumstance, and nearly forgotten nuns often lead to easy comparisons with Roman Catholicism, in form if not function.] Vajrayana Buddhism involves esoteric visualizations, symbols, and complicated rituals that can only be learned by study with a master. This explains why Vajrayana is also referred to as Esoteric Buddhism. Vajrayana Buddhism lays great emphasis on mantras (incantations), mudras (hand gestures) and mandalas (diagrams of deities and cosmic forces), as well as on magic and a multiplicity of deities...

Emmy and Golden Globe Award winning American actor Richard T. Gere has another identity. In the spiritual dimension of his life, far from his worldly Hollywood fame, he is a Vajrayana Buddhist.

Gere was raised by Methodist Christian parents. He began his search for the beauty of Buddhist tranquility in 1978 when he was traveling in Nepal with a Brazilian painter named Sylvia Martins.

Since then he became an active supporter of the 14th Dalai Lama, the former spiritual-political leader of Tibet, now the head [quasi "pope"] of the Gelug branch of Tibetan Vajrayana, the "Diamond Way" or "Thunderbolt Vehicle."

Tibetan Buddhism is composed of four principal schools, namely, the Nyingma (ancient) School, the Sakya School, the Kagyu (Oral Tradition) School, and the Gelug (Tradition of Virtue or "Yellow Hat") School. Tsongkhapa is the pioneer of this Buddhist school.

Vajrayana (onmarkproductions.com)
Although the first tantric Buddhist texts appeared in India in the 3rd Century and continued to appear until the 12th century (Williams, 2000, p. 194), scholars such as Hirakawa Akira assert that the Vajrayana school probably came into existence in the 6th or 7th Century (History of Indian Buddhism, 1993, p. 9), while the term Vajrayana itself first appeared in the 8th century (Macmillan Encyclopedia of Buddhism, 2004).

Vajrayana was preceded by the Mantrayana, and then followed by the Sahajayana and Kala-chakra-yana (Schumann, Buddhism: an outline of its teachings and schools, 1974). The period of Indian Vajrayana Buddhism has been classified as the fifth (Akira, 1993) or final (Macmillan, 2000) period of Indian Buddhism. The literature of Vajrayana is absent from the oldest Buddhist literature of the Pali Canon and the Agamas.

But practitioners claim mythological origins for the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Those origins claim that the historical Shakyamuni Buddha taught tantra. But since these are "secret," occult, or esoteric teachings, confined to the guru/disciple relationship, they were generally written down long after the Buddha's other teachings -- the Pali Canon and the Mahayana sutras.

The Vajrayana tradition holds that its teachings were first expounded by the Buddha 16 years after his great enlightenment. Historians have identified an early stage of Mantra-yana beginning in the 4th Century, and they argue that assigning the teachings to the historical Buddha is "patently absurd" (Kitagawa, The Religious Traditions of Asia: Religion, History, and Culture, 2002). Is My Mind My Friend?

Wisdom Quarterly
(Dialupcaterpillar/Flickr)

"What we think, we become," said the Buddha? Or was it, "We are what we think (as the result of mental karma)? The quote is actually, "Mind is the forerunner of all conditions. If we speak or act with a pure or impure mind/heart, happiness or woe follows us wherever we go" (Dhammapada, Verse 1).

"American Idol" contestant Mary Roach loses mind

Mind—Friend or Foe?
Our thoughts are the building blocks of the lives we desire. My Mind Is Not Always My Friend is a blueprint that shows how we can examine our thinking and change it. Steven J. Fogel shows us how to:
  • confront outside challenges (and inner demons) by changing the way the inner mind views them and reacts to them
  • get out of our own way so we can live every day to the fullest in the present moment
  • become fearless so we can always be at our best
  • identify and manage behavior that until now has been disruptive to the life we want
  • behave in ways that are in harmony with our goals
  • recognize when the voice in our head is likely to lead us into self-destructive behavior
  • develop self-awareness to recognize our set ways of being and to overcome and let them go. More

Oprah wants you to have your own show!

NEW YORK (AP) – Oprah Winfrey wants to give an undiscovered talent a chance to follow in her footsteps on her new cable network. The talk show host is teaming up with reality TV producer Mark Burnett on a show searching for the next big TV personality.

"Your Own Show: Oprah's Search for the Next TV Star" will air on the Oprah Winfrey Network beginning in January, the same month of OWN's launch. Winfrey is ending "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in September 2011 after 25 seasons.

In a phone interview from Los Angeles, Burnett — the man behind such shows as "Survivor" and "The Apprentice" — said the premise fits perfectly into what people like to watch: Regular people achieving extraordinary things.

"The landscape and acceptance of ordinary people on television is widely accepted... Much in the way 'American Idol' finds unknown people (to be recording stars) there's no reason we can't find someone who deserves their own show," he said.

Aspiring hosts can upload videos to Oprah.com under categories like traditional talk show, cooking, health and wellness, and interior design. It's possible to also watch and vote on submitted videos. In-person casting calls are happening this month in Atlanta, Dallas, and Orange County, California. More>>

OUR SHOW IDEA
"The Big Buddha show." Have a large woman, preferably someone domineering and ruled by ego, listen to public relations consultants and entertainment executives about telling people how to get rich, lose weight, gain weight, and anything else that sells ad time. She'll drop weight and pack it back on according to the rating charts. If worse comes to worse, she might even mention the Dharma. Yes, and you guessed it, we aren't crazy about Oprah. But we are crazy about you getting your own show instead of watching her. So submit a video.

Hulu better than YouTube?

When it comes to offering full-length content on the Web, YouTube isn't ready to lose to Hulu. [This comes as it is enjoying a huge surge due to British songstress Susan Boyle (pictured above) teaching Simon Cowell a lesson in humility (see "Simpsons" clip below). WQ debates which site to utilize.]

Yesterday, Google's California-based video site announced that it had reached agreement with notable entertainment companies, including Sony Pictures, Lions Gate Entertainment, and CBS (publisher of CNET News) to offer visitors full-length TV shows and feature films.

What this means is that YouTube wants to become a one-stop shop for everything video. The strategy seems obvious. YouTube already has more than 100 million people visiting every month to watch a mixture of short clips created by amateurs and longer clips by semiprofessionals. More>>
