Duat ("do-aht," Tuat, Tuaut, or Akert, Amenthes, Amenti, or Neter-khertet) is the Realm of the Dead in ancient Egyptian mythology. It has been represented in hieroglyphs as a star-in-circle: 𓇽.

The Egyptian god Osiris was believed to be the lord of the underworld [like the Buddhist afterlife "god" Yama]. He was the first mummy, as depicted in the Osiris myth, and he personified rebirth and life after death.

The underworld was also the residence of various other gods along with Osiris. The Duat was the region through which the sun god Ra traveled from west to east each night, and it was where he battled Apophis (Apep), who embodied the primordial chaos the sun had to defeat in order to rise each morning and restore order to the earth.

Visitors set up an earth colony.

It was also the place where people's "souls" [rebirth continuum, gandhabba, continuation of the impersonal process of consciousness and the reappearance of the other ancillary aggregates clung to as a "self"] went after death for judgement, though that was not the full extent of the afterlife (Faulkner, p. 143).

Burial chambers formed touching-points between the mundane world and the Duat, and the ꜣḫ ("akh") "the effectiveness of the dead," could use tombs to travel back and forth from the Duat (Pinch, pp. 33-35).

Why do we feel it "natural" to follow tall people? Might remnant memories of their offspring, hybrids, were children of severe rulers that demanded to be obeyed (ancient-origins.net).

Each night through the Duat the sun god Ra travelled, signifying revivification [rebirth, re-becoming, reappearance] as the main goal of the dead. Ra travelled under the world upon his Atet barge from west to east. He was transformed from its aged Atum form into Khepri, the new dawning sun.

The dead king, worshipped as a god, was also central to the mythology surrounding the concept of Duat, often depicted as being one with Ra (Arthur Edward Pearse Brome Weigal, A Guide to the Antiquities of Upper Egypt from Abydos to the Sudan Frontier, Taylor & Francis, p. 199). More

The relationship between humans and animals is complex, with mutual dependencies that are practical, psychological, and even theological. Grand Canyon Egyptians: The Search for Kincaid's Cave

(The Slice #50, Feb. 10, 2016) G.E. Kincaid discovered Buddha statues, Hindu artifacts, Egyptian-style mummies and artifacts, including a sword in a cave in the Grand Canyon more than a century ago. It was reported in the Arizona Gazette, a publication in the state the Grand Canyon runs though. The Smithsonian removed and hid away all of the artifacts, covered the entrance, then buried all references to and knowledge of it and to this day denies it ever happened. It is now illegal to explore or enter any cave in the national park without express permission in writing in advance. Presentation of a year's worth of research compiled into one video rather than a scientific paper or popular magazine article. There is enough information from both Kincaid's and John Wesley Powell's journals to determine a location. There are several mentions of the cave's contents from other witnesses. A majority of people have had contact with a dead partner: Bereaved people sense the dead or, as researchers rationalize, experience high levels of "hallucinatory experiences" such as seeing a loved one in an old chair.

• University researchers found "strikingly high" prevalence of sightings of the dead.
• Many never reveal experience for fear of ridicule or being labelled crazy.
• Experiences may be similar to PTSD flashbacks.

A scientific study from the University of Milan found that an amazing six out of ten people report having contact with a loved one who has passed away.

These experiences,* they say, can include sights, sounds, smells, or sensing the presence of their departed loved one.

Despite the apparent prevalence of such events, the researchers reason that most people do not report them because they are afraid of being judged or ridiculed.

Although many would say that these encounters constitute evidence for life after death [immediate rebirth into another body, often in temporary spirit (subtle matter) form before further rebirths], the study appears to discount that possibility by labeling them "post-bereavement hallucinatory experiences."

Similarly, a London academic who has studied the phenomenon calls it "experiences of continued presence" and theorizes that it is caused by post-traumatic stress surrounding the death of a loved one.

Some researchers have theorized that the experiences are similar to flashbacks experienced by sufferers of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but Dr. Hayes said they are more complicated than that.

"[Experiences of Continued Presence or ECPs] can occur for many years afterwards and even when the bereaved are no longer experiencing trauma and they are usually not in the form of flashbacks but can be quite new experiences," she said. "Whether they are helpful or unhelpful depends on the nature of the relationship with the deceased."

Many who have had positive encounters with their deceased loved ones say they have been soothed to sleep or been given the encouragement to achieve a difficult task.
 

Beauty fades: age, ill, dead, rebirth

Some say they have even been helped to complete a mundane chore, such as a man whose grandmother -- who had been dead for four years -- told him to fix the kitchen waste disposal system for his grandfather who was finding the task very stressful.

Dr. Hayes added: "The form [that ECPs] take also fits the relationship with the deceased. It’s like they walk on to the stage, on cue, and play the part the bereaved would expect them to." More

After-Death Communication
(Coast to Coast AM) The phenomenon has a name, its paranormal nomenclature, "after-death communication" (ADC), coined by pioneering researcher Bill Guggenheim.
 

Guggenheim studied ADCs for over 30 years and documented over 3,000 accounts of the phenomenon, leading him to conclude that these experiences are, in fact, "modern day evidence for life after death."

The source of these experiences remains debatable, but the Milan study indicates that they are far more common than previously believed.

With time goes and more research, the social stigma surrounding the phenomenon will lessen and answers about their origin may be determined.

Now what human flesh was once all the rage for eating? Powdered Egyptian mummy, but since authentic Egyptian mummy was hard to come by, entrepreneurial Jews (according to records) ground up ordinary corpses with other items related to execution. Ah, nothing like death to give life, one supposes is the logic here.

What does a play have to do with real life? Here's what. Let us first ask, What is "Witches' mummy," the ingredient listed before the "maw and gulf [stomach and throat] of...shark"? (4.1.23). It is Egyptian mummy, that is, mummified flesh:

Editor W.G. Clark (Macbeth by William Shakespeare, eds. W.G. Clark and W.A. Wright, Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1878) explains the significance of mummified flesh in his edition of the tragedy of Macbeth:

"Mummy was used as a medicine both long before and long after [the] author's time. Sir Thomas Browne, in his Fragment on Mummies, tells us that Francis the First always carried mummy with him as a panacea against all disorders.

"Some used it for epilepsy, some for gout, some used it as a stiptic [antihemorrhagic]. He goes on: 'The common opinion of the virtues of mummy bred great consumption thereof, and princes and great men contended for this strange panacea, wherein Jews dealt largely manufacturing mummies from dead carcases and giving them the names of kings, while specifics were compounded from crosses and gibbet leavings.'

"The same author, in his Hydriotaphia (Ch. V.) says: ' The Egyptian mummies which Cambyses [King of Persia, a son of Cyrus the Great] spared, avarice now consumeth.
