C'mon, now, don't fight dirty. It leads to anger.
Do "Beauty and the Beast" relationships really exist, and do they produce little beauties?

Compton Vegan's "soul food" in N.W.A Land

Compton native serves up healthier vegan options in a city filled with fast food
(CBS Mornings) Compton is a community whose portrayal in rap music and blaxploitation movies eclipses the lives of real people who live there (once predominantly white, then Black, now Latinx). It's also a city within Los Angeles where healthy food can be hard to come by and life expectancy is five years below the Los Angeles County average. Jamie Yuccas reports for the "CBS This Morning" series A More Perfect Union.

Compton Vegan journey to creating a plant-based future
Every kind of food is available as plant-based
On Juneteenth, Lemel Durrah, owner and operator of Compton Vegan, hosted the Compton Vegan Cares Initiative in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. His plan was to feed the City of Compton directly and for free by donating 200 plant-based meals, along with toilet paper, bottled water, face masks, and other miscellaneous essential goods.

In order to claim items, all that was asked was to show anything that had your name on it along with your Compton address.

But when one man arrived, he instead showed Durrah the top of his right hand, tattooed with “Sweet Home Compton” scripted above the city skyline. He was a part of the Compton community, and Compton was a part of him.

Durrah, a vegan soul food chef and health advocate, started Compton Vegan in order to provide healthier options to his home community, a city facing food apartheid, including the scarcity of food that is nutritionally valuable.

Humorous vegans exist in Lone Star Texas
Durrah was born in Compton, and while he moved around as a child — living in places like Virginia, Germany, and Texas — “Compton is home,” he says.

After graduating from Tuskegee University in Alabama, he says, “I wanted to go back to my community and make a difference,” he continues. “I just wanted to be a better example.” ...

In 2014, in an effort toward personal recovery following a hard divorce, he decided to try the Daniel Fast, a biblical abstaining from consuming animals and animal products, typically done for 21 days at the start of a new year. According to the philosophy of the fast, everything eaten should come from the earth in an effort to cleanse one spiritually and physically.

Originally inhabited by the Indigenous Tongva Indians and ultimately colonized by the Spanish, Compton was settled in 1867 after California’s Gold Rush era by a pioneering group led by Reverend Griffith Dickenson Compton.

Vegan Muscle: Killing workouts not animals
In fact, Compton is one of the oldest cities in all of California and was the eighth overall city to incorporate in Los Angeles in 1888.

In order to incorporate, Rev. Compton donated his land and stipulated that certain acreage — an area known as Richland Farms — be zoned for agricultural purposes, which remains in effect today.

Here, you could run a small homestead farm or ranch that included land for growing agriculture and raising livestock. During and after World War II, Black families, for example, began to migrate from the South to the West Coast, with many finding their new homes in this very locale and its neighboring suburbs, which reminded them of home along with new prospects of work.

Prior to World War II, Compton’s population was 95 percent white. By 1965, Compton had become 65 percent African American. Its current population, according to a study by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, is... More

Plant Paradox: Dr. Gundry on bad health foods

Dr. Steven R Gundry MD, 4/25/17; Ananda (DBM), Ashley Wells (eds.). Wisdom Quarterly

The Plant Paradox: Hidden Dangers in "Healthy" Foods That Cause Disease and Weight Gain
Most of us have heard of toxic gluten — a protein found in wheat, pizza, flour, pasta, and bread that causes widespread inflammation and other problems in the body.

Americans spend billions of dollars on gluten-free diets in an effort to protect their health. But what if we’ve been missing the root of the problem?

In The Plant Paradox, renowned California cardiologist Dr. Steven Gundry reveals that gluten is just one variety of a common, highly toxic, plant-based protein called lectin.

Lectins are found in grains like wheat and also in the “gluten-free” foods most of us commonly  think are healthy -- including many fruits, vegetables, nuts (like peanuts, which are actually beans), beans, and conventional dairy products.

These proteins, which are found in the grains, seeds, skins, rinds, and leaves of plants, are designed by nature to protect plants from predators like humans.

Once ingested, they incite a kind of chemical warfare in our bodies, causing inflammatory reactions that can lead to weight gain and serious health conditions, like auto-immune diseases.
  • "I read this book...it worked. My auto-immune disease is gone, and I'm 37 pounds lighter in my pleather." - Kelly Clarkson
This fruit is a health food full of good fat.
At his clinics in California, Dr. Gundry has successfully treated tens of thousands of patients suffering from auto-immune disorders, diabetes, leaky gut syndrome, heart disease, and neurodegenerative diseases with a protocol that detoxes the cells, repairs the gut, and nourishes the body.

Now, in the book series The Plant Paradox, he shares this clinically-proven program with readers everywhere.

The simple and daunting fact is, lectins are everywhere. Fortunately, Dr. Gundry offers simple hacks to employ to avoid them, including:
  • Peel veggies. Most of the lectins are contained in the skin and seeds of plants; simply peeling and de-seeding vegetables (like tomatoes and peppers) reduces their lectin content.
  • Eat fruit in season. Fruit contain fewer lectins when ripe, so eating apples, berries, and other lectin-containing fruits at the peak of ripeness helps minimize lectin consumption.
  • Swap brown rice for white. Whole grains and seeds with hard outer coatings are designed by nature to cause digestive distress — because they are full of lectins.
With a full list of lectin-containing foods and simple substitutes for each, a step-by-step detox and eating plan, and delicious lectin-free recipes, The Plant Paradox illuminates the hidden dangers lurking in a salad bowl — and shows us how to eat whole foods in a whole new way. More

What the Buddha did during an epidemic

Ven. Piyadassi Thera (trans.), Ratana Sutta: "Jewel Discourse" (Sn 2.1, PTS Sn 222-238; Khp 6) edited by Dhr. Seven, Ananda (Dharma Buddhist Meditation), Wisdom Quarterly, March 2020, Coronavirus Age
Dharma Buddhist Meditation: Group Zoom Conference, Sundays, 9:00 AM-12:00 PM

Translator's introduction: According to the commentary the reason for this sutra (safeguard discourse), in brief, is an epidemic.

The ancient city of Vesali (Bihar, India) was once afflicted by a famine, causing death, especially of the impoverished. The presence of decaying corpses attracted many unclean spirits that began to haunt the city. This was followed by an epidemic.

Plagued by these three fearsome things -- famine, spirits (non-human beings), and disease -- the citizens sought the help of the Buddha, who was then staying in Rajagaha (Rajgir, India).

Followed by a large number of monastics, including Venerable Ananda, his attendant disciple [possibly his son, according to some traditions, born before Rahula, the son of a harem girl named Mrigi], the Buddha visited Vesali. With the arrival of the teacher, there came a torrential rain, which washed away the putrefying corpses.
  • Ānanda asked the Buddha to visit Vesālī. There the Buddha taught the Jewel Discourse (Ratana Sutra) as a paitta, which he then recited, thereby ridding the city of disease, drought, and unclean spirits. (Was Ananda the Buddha's son as some traditions say?)
There really are "unclean spirits" who harm.
The atmosphere was purified, the city was physically clean, and the Buddha delivered the following Jewel Discourse (Ratana Sutta) to Ven. Ananda, and gave him instructions on how to tour the city with the Licchavi citizens reciting (chanting) the discourse as a mark of protection to the people of Vesali.

Ven. Ananda followed the instructions and sprinkled blessed water from the Buddha's alms bowl. As a result the unclean spirits were exorcised, and the epidemic subsided.

Thereafter, Ven. Ananda returned with the citizens of Vesali to the public hall, where the Buddha and a number of disciples had assembled awaiting their arrival. The Buddha then recited the Jewel Discourse to the gathering:

Ratana Sutra: The "Jewel Discourse"
Dispelling fear hand gesture
1. "Whatever (non-human) beings are assembled here, terrestrial or celestial, may they all have peace of mind, and may they listen attentively to these words:

2. "O, beings, listen closely. May you all radiate loving-kindness to human beings who day and night bring offerings to you (share merit). Therefore, protect them diligently.

3. "Whatever treasure there be, whether here or in the world beyond, whatever precious jewel there be in heavenly worlds, there is none comparable to the Tathagata (the Wayfarer, the Thus Come One, the One Arrived at Suchness, the Perfect One). This precious jewel [1] is the Buddha [2]. By this (asseveration of) truth, may there be happiness.

4. "That Cessation, that Letting Go, that Deathlessness (Nirvana) supreme, the calm and collected Scythian (Shakyian) Sage directly realized. There is none comparable to this (Nirvana) Dharma. This precious jewel is the Dharma [3]. By this (asseveration of) truth, may there be happiness.

Fearless be (abhaya mudra)
5. "The Supreme Buddha extolled a path of purification (the Noble Eightfold Path) calling it the path that unfailingly brings concentration. There is nothing comparable to this concentration. This precious jewel is the Dharma. By this (asseveration of) truth, may there be happiness.

6. "The eight persons extolled by virtuous people constitute four pairs. They are the disciples of the Buddha and are worthy of offerings (arhats). Gifts given to them yield rich results. This precious jewel is the Sangha [4]. By this (asseveration of) truth, may there be happiness.

7. "With a steadfast mind and applying themselves well in the dispensation of the Buddha Gautama, free from (defilements), they have attained that which should be attained (arhatship, full enlightenment) encountering the Deathless. They enjoy the peace of Nirvana freely obtained [5]. This precious jewel is the Sangha. By this (asseveration of) truth, may there be happiness.

8. "As a post deep planted in the earth stands unshaken by the winds from the four quarters so, too, I declare is the virtuous person who comprehends with wisdom the Ennobling (Enlightening) Truths. This precious jewel is the (Noble) Sangha. By this (asseveration of) truth, may there be happiness.

9. "Those who realized the Noble Truths well taught by the one profound in wisdom (the Buddha), even though they may be exceedingly heedless, they will not take an eighth rebirth (in the sensual sphere) [6]. This precious jewel is the Sangha. By this (asseveration of) truth, may there be happiness.

10. "With the gaining of insight one abandons three states of mind -- namely self-illusion, skeptical doubt, and belief in meaningless rites and rituals, should there be any. One is also fully freed from the four states of woe and is therefore incapable of committing the six major wrongdoings [7]. This precious jewel is the Sangha. By this (asseveration of) truth, may there be happiness.

11. "Any harmful action (karma) one may still do by deed, word, or thought, one is incapable of concealing it, for it has been proclaimed that such concealing is impossible for one who has seen the Path (of Nirvana) [8]. This precious jewel is the [Noble] Sangha. By this (asseveration of), truth may there be happiness.

12. "As the woodland groves in the early heat of the summer month are crowned with blossoming flowers, even so is the sublime Dharma leading to the (calm) of Nirvana that is taught (by the Buddha) for the highest good. This precious jewel is the Buddha. By this (asseveration of) truth, may there be happiness.

13. "The Peerless One, the Excellent One, the Knower (of Nirvana), the Revealer (of Nirvana), the Bringer (of the Noble Path), taught the excellent Dharma. This precious jewel is the Buddha. By this (asseveration of) truth, may there be happiness.

14. "Their past (karma) is spent, new (karma) no more arises, mind is free from future becoming. The seed (of rebirth-consciousness) has dissolved, they have no more craving for continued rebirth. Those wise one go out (of Samsara, the Wheel of Rebirth and Suffering) as the flame of this lamp (goes out). This precious jewel is the [Noble] Sangha. By this (asseveration of) truth, may there be happiness.

The Buddha washing a sick monk himself.
15. "Whatever (non-human) beings are assembled here, terrestrial or celestial (of earth or sky), come let us salute the Buddha, the Tathagata (the Perfect One, the Wayfarer), honored by devas and humans. May there be happiness [9].

16. "Whatever beings are assembled here, terrestrial or celestial, come let us salute the perfect Dharma, honored by devas and humans. May there be happiness.

17. "Whatever beings are assembled here, terrestrial or celestial, come let us salute the perfect [Noble] Sangha, honored by devas and humans. May there be happiness."

NOTES
1. Ratana means precious "jewel." Here the term is applied to the three jewels or gems, the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha.
2. Literally, in the Buddha is this precious jewel.
3. Literally, in the Dharma is this precious jewel.
4. Literally, in the Sangha is this precious jewel.
5. Obtained without payment: avyayena (KhpA).
6. The reason why it is stated that there will be no eighth existence for a person who has attained the first stage of enlightenment (stream-entry) is that such a being can be reborn at most only seven times in the sense sphere (kama loka).
7. Abhithanani: i. matricide, ii. patricide, iii. the murder of an arhat (enlightened one, consummate one), iv. the shedding of a buddha's blood, v. causing a schism in the Sangha, vi. pernicious false views/beliefs (niyata micca ditthi) that lead to woeful rebirths.
8. One is a stream-enterer (sotapanna), one who has attained the first stage of awakening.
9. The last three stanzas were recited by Sakka, the King of the Devas (in two celestial world immediately above the human plane) (KhpA).

    Mexican-American Linda Ronstadt (film)

Greenwich Entertainment, 9/12/19; Crystal Quintero, Pfc. Sandoval (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice
Since bursting onto the music scene in 1967, Chicana Linda Ronstadt has been an icon of the American music scene. She has remained relevant more than half a century. Her extraordinary vocal range and ambition created unforgettable songs that spanned genres between rock, pop, country, folk, folklorico, American standards, classic Mexican ballads, and soul music. As the most popular American female recording artist of the 1970s -- with songs like “You’re No Good,” “When Will I Be Loved,” and “Blue Bayou” -- Ronstadt filled arenas and produced an astounding 11 platinum-selling albums. She was the first artist to top the pop, country, and R&B charts simultaneously. She has won 10 Grammy Awards and been nominated 26 times. She has attained a level of stardom the Tucson, Arizona native never could have imagined.
In LINDA RONSTADT: THE SOUND OF MY VOICE, she herself is our guide through her early years of singing Mexican canciones ("songs") with her family, her folk music days with the Stone Poneys, and her reign as the “rock queen” of the ‘70s and early ’80s. She was a pioneer for women in the male-dominated American music industry, a passionate advocate for human rights, and had a high-profile romance with California Governor Jerry Brown [of Dead Kennedys' fame]. Ultimately, her singing-voice was stilled by an illness that forced her into retirement. But her music and influence remain as timeless as ever.

    In theaters September 2019!
The documentary contains moving performance footage and appearances by friends and collaborators including Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt, and Jackson Browne. LINDA RONSTADT: THE SOUND OF MY VOICE celebrates an artist whose desire to share the Mexican-infused music she loved growing up has made generations of fans fall in love with her and the sound of her voice. Contemplating the Body

Ajahn Mun (original flawed translation by Ven. Thanissaro) via Ven. Sujato (facebook.com); edited by Dhr. Seven, Dhamma Teacher Aloka, Crystal Q., Wisdom Quarterly
"Alas, before long this body, deprived of consciousness, will lie strewn on the earth, discarded, just like a useless log" - Dhammapada, Verse 41 (tipitaka.net).
    .
Not me, baby! I'ma last forever!
The contemplation of the body is a practice sages -- including the Buddha -- have described in many ways.

For example, in the "Great [Fourfold] Establishing of Mindfulness" Sutra, the Buddha calls the contemplation of the body a support (or "frame of reference") for establishing mindfulness using this very body.

Among the root subjects of meditation taught to new monastics at the beginning of the ordination ceremony, a preceptor instructs them to mindfully contemplate:
    1. head hairs
    2. body hairs
    3. nails
    4. teeth
    5. skin.
When organism overtake the immune system
In the Buddha's first ever sutra, the "Discourse on the Turning of the Wheel of the Dharma," he teaches that birth, aging, and death are disappointing (unwished for, unsatisfactory, painful, hard to accept, hard to endure, displeasing, leading to no fulfillment).

We have all now taken birth, have we not? So when we practice to take these liberating-teachings inwardly, contemplate them, and apply them to ourselves (opanayiko), we are doing well in our practice of the Dharma.

Why? Because the Dharma ("Truth") is akāliko (timeless, immediate, ever present) and āloko (self-evidently clear by day and night, free of anything that would obscure it).

    What's the hell? Who stinks?
War criminal Hillary Clinton stinks of foul sulfur.
While residing at Jetavana monastery, the Buddha uttered Verse 41 of the Dhammapada with reference to Venerable Tissa.
After taking a meditation subject from the Buddha, Ven. Tissa was diligently practicing meditation when he became afflicted with a disease.

Small boils appeared all over his body then developed into big sores. When the sores burst, his robes became sticky, stained with pus and blood. And his body began to stink.

For this reason, he was known as Putigatta Tissa, "Tissa with the stinking body."

    Bathed by the Buddha
Another realizes the Truth and is set free.
As the Buddha surveyed his surroundings with the light of wisdom, the monk appeared in his field of vision.

He saw his sorrowful state, abandoned by other monks (his resident pupils) on account of his bad smell.

The Buddha knew Tissa had the capacity to attain full enlightenment. So he proceeded to a shed close to where Tissa was staying.

He boiled fresh water and took it where Tissa was lying down. He took hold of the edge of his cot.

Only then did the resident monks, Tissa's pupils, gather around. And as instructed by the Buddha, they carried Tissa to the shed, where he was bathed and rinsed.

His robes were washed and dried for him. Afterward, Tissa felt fresh in body and mind. Soon he developed one-pointedness of mind in profound concentration.

Standing at the head of the cot, the Buddha said to Tissa that this body, when devoid of life, would be as useless as a log strewn on the earth.
