• One of the great problems of life is clinging (upādāna). Among all the things we cling to (that clump and cling to themselves as we imagine we are them), we are inadvertently clinging to suffering (disappointment, dukkha). There is temporary release and bliss through the meditations, the jhanas, but really letting go results from "seeing things as they truly are," which is also called "clear seeing" (vipassana).

As for the question, Is punk dead? It never seemed to be until we saw our first "Punk's not dead" patch. Who said it was, and why give that idea more airtime? Of course, it's been decades since that happened, and now there's a museum, and if it is dead, "pop punk" killed it.

But how could it be dead if even the Sixties' hippie movement is not dead but lives on at Phish and other shows. The music survives, and the sentiment is strong. Punk rock really was about something, not least going against the stream. Noah Levine capitalized on this with his Dharma Punx book and a meditation and sobriety movement that aimed at turning that rebellion inward to something longer lasting than a fashion statement or general nihilistic attitude. It was code blue, um, code red when the legendary L.A. hardcore punk band (with OC Goth beginnings) played The Punk Rock Museum's March parking lot show.

It was an unforgettable day of music, an incredible event that featured five powerhouse bands, each bringing their unique energy and style. The legendary T.S.O.L. headlined, taking the stage to close out the evening in epic fashion. The show started with local Las Vegas trio The Dollheads, followed by the high-energy Knuckleheadz, and the electrifying Playboy Manbaby, and the Voodoo Glow Skulls.

Tickets got fans into the show and into the museum, too (entrance fee included). The first 80 who arrived got seating to watch a round table discussion that started at 12:30 pm, moderated by the legendary George Stroumboulopolous in a riveting, in-depth conversation, exploring the global cultural impact of punk, featuring Fat Mike, Kevin Lyman, T.S.O.L's Jack Grisham, photographer Edward Colver, Vinnie Fiorello, and Jennifer Finch. It was an action-packed day!

250th anniversary of Patrick Henry's "Liberty or Death" speech

(Historic St. John's Church) Ten years ago on March 23, 2015: RICHMOND. On March 23, 1775, at St. John's Church in Richmond, Virginia, Patrick Henry delivered his Liberty or Death speech at the 2nd Virginia Convention.

Among the 120 delegates in attendance were George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Harrison, Thomas Nelson, Robert Carter Nicholas, and other.

Henry was a superb orator who spoke extemporaneously. One aspect of Henry’s genius was that he was able to take ideas and phrases that were part of the intellectual life of the colonies and put them into eloquent words and persuasive arguments. There is no written record of this speech. It was not until William Wirt, Henry’s first biographer, published Sketches of the Life and Character of Patrick Henry in 1817 that a reconstruction of the speech was printed.

Hindus (Vedic Brahmins) do not understand what Buddhism means by moksha (liberation, freedom). By shunyata, or "emptiness," is not meant "nothing." What is meant is no self, that ultimately there is no separate "self." This can mean self is all-one with everything, indistinguishable from the environment, but the point is that it means everything is impersonal. It is not-self. There is no ego. The personality is an impermanent flux.

Based on the recollections of men who had been present when the speech was made, the main source was a lengthy letter that St. George Tucker wrote relating his memories of the speech. Some scholars attribute the version of the speech commonly known to Tucker, but there are other firsthand accounts that characterize Henry’s speech in a similar manner, giving weight to Tucker’s memories of the words that Henry spoke.

James Parker, a Norfolk merchant who talked with delegates after the convention, wrote a letter on April 6, 1775, that describes Henry’s speech as “infamously insolent” and repeats that

• Henry referred to the king as “a tyrant, a fool, a puppet, and a tool to the ministry,
• said there was now no Englishmen, no Scots, no Britons, but a set of wretches sunk in luxury,
• they had lost their natural courage and
• [were] unable to look the brave Americans in the face.”

Edmund Randolph, in a history of Virginia that he wrote in the early 19th century, recalled that Henry “with indignation ridiculed the idea of peace ‘when there is no peace.’”

The language reflected in these descriptions of Henry’s speech is similar to that which William Wirt included in his reconstruction. Henry’s speech was powerful and carried the resolutions in a close vote.

The convention journal does not record the actual vote, but Parker wrote that the resolution was “carried by a Majority of 65 to 60.”

The convention records indicate that only 118 delegates were likely present that day. The vote was close, and the resolution passed by a narrow margin.

(CNN) — It’s all rise for Chappell Roan, 26.  The emerging pop star (not to be confused with the established comedian who's always getting in trouble with our trans community) drew in a major crowd at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee over the weekend, validating festival organizers’ decision to move her performance to a bigger stage to accommodate anticipated crowds.

Some Chappell (singer not the comedian) supporters even began camping out around 3:30 am to claim their spots before her set, according to The Tennessean. CNN has reached out to Bonnaroo to confirm the number of people in attendance for Roan’s performance.

Bonnaroo’s move came days after came after Roan, whose given name is Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, drew an unexpectedly large crowd at New York City’s Gov Ball Music Festival, where she appeared on stage in head-to-toe green body paint dressed as the Statue of Liberty.

The lesbian singer, 26, who signed her first record deal as a teen, recently expressed some of the pressure she has felt with her growing popularity.

Jains believe plants, animals, and even some inanimate things (like fire, air, and water) have souls (or the divine spark), just as humans do.

The principle of nonviolence includes doing no harm to humans, plants, animals, or nature. For that reason, all Jains are strict vegetarians — so strict, in fact, that eating root vegetables and some fruits is not allowed because removing the root would kill the plant.

However, Jains can eat vegetables that grow above the ground, because they can be picked while leaving the rest of the plant intact in complete dedication to nonviolence.

The Compassion in Action segment on March 17 features a presentation of the feature film Miss Liberty.

SYNOPSIS: Bob Sanders, a computer tech, is owed money by the owner of a slaughterhouse in their small Midwestern town. When a used up dairy cow manages to escape the packing plant and take refuge in his backyard, he keeps her as collateral, resulting in human drama, legal intrigue, a hint of romance, and you-didn't-see-this-one-coming ending.

That, in a capsule, is Miss Liberty, the family feature film currently in development and co-written by Rev. William Melton and Victoria Moran. It gets the message of farm animal rights, workers' rights, and veganism out to a larger audience who would never voluntarily watch a "vegan movie" but would love a darn good movie about a cow with a vegan as its female lead.

That lead is Patricia Levinson, aka "Cow Patty," the animal rights attorney who comes from NYC to attempt to save a cow named "Miss Liberty." 

n a change of pace for Compassion Consortium Sunday services, the screenwriters will temporarily move from their regular 3rd Sunday assignments and be interviewed by Elaine Hutchison as Compassion in Action guests.

Victoria Moran, a vegan for 40 years and an animal advocate and vegetarian for over 50, is the author of 13 books, with a 14th, Age Like a Yogi, coming in early 2025.

She was also lead producer for Thomas Jackson's 2019 documentary, A Prayer for Compassion, about food choices and spirituality.

In the CiA segment, Rev. William and Victoria discuss with Elaine why the time has come for Miss Liberty and how viewers can be part of it.

The origin of the presidential turkey pardon ceremony is a bit murky. Pres. Harry Truman was the first president to hold a photo-op at the White House with a turkey he received from the National Turkey Federation and the Poultry and Egg National Board.

The White House says Truman began the tradition, but that's a claim the Truman Library and Museum has disputed.

It's also possible the ritual began with Pres. Abraham Lincoln after his son urged his father to spare the bird they had planned to slaughter and devour for Christmas.
