Deeper: The Four Noble Truths (audio)

Ajahn Chah (ajahnchah.org), "The Four Noble Truths" via Ajahn Jayasaro, 3/17/13; Ajahn Amaro; accompanying Wiki text edited by Dhr. Seven, Pat Macpherson, Ellie Askew, Wisdom Quarterly

The Collected Teachings of Ajahn Chah was published in 2012. This is the complete collection of talks by Ajahn Chah that have been translated into English.

During the winter of 2012, Ajahn Amaro, abbot of Amaravati Monastery, was giving daily readings recorded as audio files. They were collected as rough-hewn edits. This talk is by guest reader Ajahn Jayasaro, author of Stillness Flowing: The Life and Teachings of Ajahn Chah.

These talks are being made available until the final version is ready. That collection will include a Q&A and will soon be published.

The Four Ennobling Truths

The Four Noble Truths (Sanskrit catvāri āryasatyāni, Pali cattāri ariyasaccāni) are regarded as the core summary of the Buddha's teaching. These ennobling (enlightening) truths are said to provide a conceptual framework for all Buddhist thought.

They explain the nature of our fundamental existential problem:
  1. dukkha or disappointment (commonly translated as "suffering," "unease," or "unsatisfactoriness")
  2. its causes (craving rooted in ignorance)
  3. its cessation (nirvana), and
  4. the path leading to its cessation.
The first noble truth explains the nature of dukkha, which is said to have the following three aspects:
  1. The obvious physical and mental suffering associated with rebirth, aging, illness, and dying.
  2. The anxiety or hardship of trying to hold on to things that are constantly changing.
  3. A basic disappointment (inability to find fulfillment) pervading all existence, due to the fact that all forms of rebirth are unsatisfactoriness, impermanent, and without any inner core or enduring substance.
On this level, the term indicates a lack of anything that can satisfy, fulfill, or complete us, the sense that things never measure up to our expectations or standards.

The focus on dukkha in this core Buddhist teaching has caused many observers to consider Buddhism to be pessimistic. However, this emphasis is about as pessimistic as a doctor focusing on an illness to cure it. It is very optimistic because there is a solution, and the path to it is perhaps the most important of the truths.

The truths present a realistic and practical assessment of our problem in the Cycle of Rebirth (samsara) — this unending round of wandering. All beings experience disappointment and pain at some point in their lives, including the inevitable suffering of illness, aging, and death.

Contemporary Buddhist teachers and translators emphasize that while the central message of Buddhism is optimistic, the Buddhist view of our situation in life (the conditions that we live in) is realistic.

The second noble truth is that the origin (causes) of dukkha can be known and undone. The origin of dukkha is commonly explained as craving (tanha) conditioned by ignorance (avijja).

Craving is the proximate cause, but on a deeper level the root cause of dukkha is ignorance of the true nature of things.

The third noble truth is that the complete cessation of dukkha is possible. That cessation of all suffering is called nirvana.

The fourth noble truth identifies a path to this cessation called the Noble Eightfold Path.

According to Buddhist tradition, the Buddha first taught the Four Noble Truths in the very first sutra or sermon he delivered after enlightenment, as recorded in the "Discourse That Sets Turning the Wheel of Truth" (Dhammacakkappavattana Sutra).

The Buddha further clarified their meaning in many subsequent teachings.

Coronavirus: Buddhist reflections from Italy

Western Buddhist nun Sayalay Khema Cari (Thabarwa Center, Southern Italy), Ellie Askew, Dhr. Seven (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly; Seth Meyers (Late Night); SNL; Jimmy Kimmel Live; LA Times

Fear: OMG, what will happen with this virus?
Rather than talk about the virus, I'd like to talk about two things that are worse (1) fear -- fear of getting sick, fear of death, fear to lose loved ones, fear to lose what we have -- and (2) the difficulty of dealing with a change of lifestyle, not knowing what to do or how to entertain ourselves (to distract ourselves).

These two are in fact connected. Look at the current directives (in Italy) for preventing spread of the virus: no cinema, disco, bars, crowded places, not touching others unnecessarily. These fit Buddhist monastics very well.

Dispelling fear: abhaya mudra
In Buddhist tradition monastics abstain from all entertainment and physical contact with far better reason than COVID 19! 😁 The reason we monastics refrain from entertainment is to observe our mind instead.

Because of not wanting to face fear, we tend to try to distract our mind at every turn. Now, a monk or nun needs to understand NATURE (svabhava) at every moment. Entertainments would distract from that sort of contemplation.

Everything born (come into being) has to die (fall away). This is what we can directly observe in nature at every single moment. There is nothing we can see or experience that can escape this nature (with the exception of nirvana -- the "unconditioned element," the "deathless," "true safety").

This is why when there is fear of death one needs to constantly distract the mind. Monastics, by their own will, regularly attend retreats and abandon regular activities in part or completely for a determined period of time. It enables us to clearly see our remaining attachments.

I have sometimes had the chance to be away from any human contact for months at a time to scrutinize my mind and deepen my understanding of the true intrinsic nature of things.

This is why I would love to share with others. For only the understanding of the fear can free us from it. No doctor, insurance agent, or policeman can free us from fear. Although they are needed in society, we should be clear about that.

Now, many people find themselves in a situation they have never previously encountered, having to change their lifestyles, severely threatened with danger if we do not obey all directions. Some things should be accepted. The collaboration of all is needed. It is at this time that we need to take care of our minds more than ever.

Detach from obsessively following the news. Instead, start to watch your own mind. You've been gifted with new conditions that will help you to have space and time. Take this opportunity NOW.

Virus hits home: Pasadena gets the 'vid
(LA Times, March 11, 2020) Pasadena on Wednesday reported its first case of confirmed coronavirus, and hours later, a Beverly Hills church announced that its rector had also been diagnosed with the virus. On its website, All Saints’ Episcopal Church said its rector, the Rev. Janet Broderick, fell ill shortly after returning from the annual conference of the Consortium of Endowed Episcopal Parishes in Louisville, Kentucky. She was in stable condition at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills, the church said, and was being treated “for a severe form of pneumonia.” More

Event 201 Pandemic Exercise: Segment 1, Intro and Medical Countermeasures (MCM) Discussion

EVENT 201 IS A "FICTIONAL" EXERCISE AND DISEASE
The CIA didn't know what China was planning?
How convenient that they knew an imaginary pandemic was coming, which they refer to as a "novel coronavirus." They knew it would be like SARS and MERS and they nickname it "CAPS" for the exercise, but it's COVID-19 out of China affecting South America.

N1H1, SARS, MERS, Swine flu, Bird flu...
Event 201 is a pandemic tabletop exercise hosted by The Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security in partnership with the World Economic Forum and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on October 18, 2019, in New York, NY. The exercise illustrated the pandemic preparedness efforts needed to diminish the large-scale economic and societal consequences of a severe pandemic.

Chinese dictatorship tried to hide severity
Drawing from actual events, Event 201 identifies important policy issues and preparedness challenges that could be solved with sufficient political will and attention. These issues were designed in a narrative to engage and educate the participants and the audience.

What about porn and masturbation? (video)

The Great Porn Experiment
See, this would never happen if one stops.
"I undertake to refrain from sensual abuse." This is the third precept. So we're going to take a 30, 60, or 90 day challenge to abandon it.

We are in The Great Porn Experiment. Our response? Let go and say "No thanks" to the dumping of billions of addictive naked images for free access without any guidance, advice, or censorship.

Their experiment has been running for a while, long enough that we have all been exposed and affected and infected, directly and indirectly.

Untitled (Keith Haring, 1985, Vagina Museum)
Social Science has a few conclusions and the same conclusion the field always comes to: More studies are needed. It's like leaving millions of lines of cocaine lying around wherever teenagers relax and sleep.

One Western Buddhist novice (Rob Norris or Ven. Bhante Rakkhita Samanera) feels a moral responsibility to address the pink "elephant in the room" of auto-erotic self-indulgence.

Here's a list of 100 benefits from letting go of porn and therefore of masturbation or self-stimulation. Go out and have real sex that doesn't harm anyone.

What is "right intention"?

Amber Larson, Pat Macpherson (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly based on Against the Stream (MN 117, 19)
What is "right intention"? It is of three kinds.
"How is right view the forerunner [of the Ennobling Eightfold Path]? One discerns wrong intention as wrong intention, and right intention as right intention. What is wrong intention? It is being intent on sensuality, ill will, or harming. This is wrong intention..."

Right intention
"One abandons wrong intention to enter into right intention — this is right effort. One is mindful to abandon wrong intention to enter and remain in right intention — this is right mindfulness. Therefore, these three qualities — right view, right effort, and right mindfulness — run and circle around right intention." — MN 117

Two categories
A "being-intent-on-enlightenment"
The Blessed One said, "Meditators, before my great awakening, when I was still just an unenlightened Bodhisattva, this thought occurred to me:

"'Why not keep dividing my thinking into two kinds?' I made thinking associated with sensuality, thinking associated with ill will, and thinking associated with harming one kind.

"And I made thinking associated with letting go (renunciation, nonclinging, freedom), thinking associated with non-ill will, and thinking associated with nonharming another kind.

"As I remained heedful, ardent, and intent in this way, thinking associated with sensuality arose in me. I realized, 'Thinking associated with sensuality has arisen in me, and that leads to my affliction or the affliction of others or the affliction of both (of everyone). Sensuality obstructs wisdom, promotes vexation, and does not lead to nirvana.'

"As I noticed that sensuality leads to my affliction, it subsided. As I noticed that it leads to the affliction of others... to the affliction of both... it obstructs wisdom, promotes vexation, and does not lead to nirvana, it subsided. Whenever thinking associated with sensuality had arisen, I simply abandoned it, broke it down, dispelled it, and wiped it out of existence.

"As I remained heedful, ardent, and intent, thinking associated with ill will arose in me. I knew, 'Thinking associated with ill will has arisen in me, and that leads to my affliction or the affliction of others or the affliction of both. It obstructs wisdom, promotes vexation, and does not lead to nirvana.'

"As I noticed that ill will leads to my affliction, it subsided. As I noticed that it leads to the affliction of others... to the affliction of both...

"It obstructs wisdom, promotes vexation, and does not lead to nirvana, it subsided. Whenever thinking imbued with ill will had arisen, I simply abandoned it, broke it down, dispelled it, wiped it out of existence."  — MN 19 More

How we watch cable FREE: Locast

Locast.org; Triple M;  Frank (FHF Show), Sheldon S., Seth Auberon (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Locast is a public service to Americans, providing local broadcast signals over the Internet in select cities. All you have to do is sign up online, provide your name and email address, and certify that you live in, and are logging on from, one of the select U.S. cities (“Designated Market Area”).

Then, you can select among local broadcasters and stream your favorite local station.

Locast.org is a [non-profit] “digital translator,” meaning that Locast.org operates just like a traditional broadcast translator service, except instead of using an over-the-air signal to boost a broadcaster’s reach, we stream the signal over the Internet to consumers located within select US cities.

Ever since the dawn of TV broadcasting in the mid-20th century, non-profit organizations have provided “translator” TV stations as a public service.

Where a primary broadcaster cannot reach a receiver with a strong enough signal, the translator amplifies that signal with another transmitter, allowing consumers who otherwise could not get the over-the-air signal to receive important programming, including local news, weather and, of course, sports.

(dgstreams) Locast TV is FREE online for live local TV in many markets

Cut the cord. DGstreams highly recommends this FREE APP if anyone wants live local news and TV stations. AT&T will donate $500,000 to Sports Fans Coalition NY, the not-for-profit organization that operates Locast, which lets users live-stream local broadcast TV stations via the Internet for free. Locast retransmits ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, and other local over-the-air broadcast signals over the internet. It’s 100% legal because it doesn’t charge anything, relying instead on user donations. The organization says it operates under the same copyright statute that lets broadcast translators receive and transmit a primary local broadcast TV station without a copyright license. According to Sports Fans Coalition NY, that means Locast is allowed to provide the digital translator service to viewers even if local broadcasters object. So far broadcasters have not challenged Locast in court. Locast is currently available in 13 cities, representing nearly one-third of all U.S. TV homes: NY, Chicago, LA, SF, Philadelphia, Dallas, Washington, Houston, Boston, Denver, Baltimore, Rapid City, and Sioux Falls. In addition to Locast, AT&T offers a free digital antenna to customers for local stations that aren’t available via Locast. New York-based Sports Fans Coalition NY was founded in 2017 and first launched Locast in NYC in January 2018.

Locast.org provides the same public service, except instead of an over-the-air signal transmitter, we provide the local broadcast signal via online streaming.

A broadband Internet connection is needed for optimal performance. Using a laptop, smartphone, or computer connected to the Internet, point browser to www.locast.org to sign up. You then can choose which local broadcast station to watch from your Internet-enabled device. More + VIDEO

SUTRA: The Karma of Comedy (stand up)

Considering a career in acting? You may want to reconsider...
Enough, headman, enough. Do not ask that.
Then Talaputa, the head of a comedic-dramatic acting troupe, went to the Blessed One and, on arrival, bowed and sat respectfully to one side. Sitting there he said to the [Buddha]:

"Venerable sir, I've heard that it has been passed down by the ancient teaching lineage of actors that, 'When an actor on the stage, in the midst of a festival, makes people laugh and gives them delight with one's imitation [deceptive illusion, counterfeit] of reality then, at the breakup of the body, after death, that actor is reborn in the company of the laughing devas [angels, light beings, deities].' What does the Blessed One say about that?"

"Enough, headman, enough. Set that aside, and do not ask."

But a second time... and a third time Talaputa re-asked.

[The Buddha finally replied:] "Headman, apparently I am unable to get past you by imploring, 'Enough, headman, enough. Set that aside, and do not ask.' So I will answer you simply:

"Beings [audience members] who are not yet free of passion [greed, lust, craving] to begin with, who are instead ensnared by the bond of passion, focus with even more passion on things inspiring passion presented by an actor on stage in the midst of a festival.

"Beings who are not yet free of aversion [hate, anger, annoyance] to begin with, who are ensnared by the bond of aversion, focus with even more aversion on things inspiring aversion presented by an actor on stage in the midst of a festival.

"Beings who are not yet free of delusion [wrong view, ignorance, confusion] to begin with, who are ensnared by the bond of delusion, focus with even more delusion on things inspiring delusion presented by an actor on stage in the midst of a festival.

"Thus the actor — intoxicated and heedless, having caused others to become intoxicated and heedless — with the breakup of the body, after death, is reborn in what is called the 'Hell* of Laughter.'
  • [*"Hell" in the Buddhist sense is not permanent damnation. It is not eternal (though it may last kalpas or aeons and seem quite longer than eternal and never ending). It is not even damnation in the sense of a "final judgment." It is closer to the appropriated Catholic concept of "purgatory." It is said to be the natural result of the natural (impersonal) law of karma -- intentional actions bearing their ripening fruit and manifold results.]
"But if one holds a view like, 'When an actor on the stage, in the midst of a festival, makes people laugh and gives them delight with one's imitation of reality then, with the breakup of the body, after death, that actor is reborn in the company of the laughing devas,' that is one's own wrong view.

"Now, I tell you, there are two [rebirth] destinations for a person overtaken by a wrong view, either hell or the animal womb."

When this was said, Talaputa, the head of the acting troupe, burst into tears and sobbed.

[The Blessed One said:] "That is what I could not get past you by saying, 'Enough, headman, enough. Set that aside, and do not ask.'"

"No, venerable sir, I'm not crying because of what the Blessed One said, but rather because I had been deceived, cheated, and fooled for so long by what the ancient teaching lineage of actors had said. — SN 42.2

March 2020's Full Super Worm Moon

Telegraph.co.uk, March 9, 2020; Pat Macpherson, Dhr. Seven (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Full moons illuminate the sky every "moonth"
Who is the Buddhist Moon Goddess?
Dust off the binocs, and keep all eyes to the skies. The third full moon of 2020 is fast approaching.

As one of 13 full moons to admire every year, March's lunar display was dubbed the Wolf Moon by early Native Americans. This year it is also in perigee, meaning it's as close as it gets to Earth.

It was also called the Worm Moon because earthworms appear around this time.

But when and how can we see it? Here we've compiled a complete guide to the Moon, Earth's only natural satellite [except for the new "Mini Moon" recently spotted] and the largest and brightest [and nearest] object in our night sky [which Russian scientists say is inside our atmosphere, neither redefining the size of the atmosphere nor claiming a size change to Luna], which has enchanted and inspired humankind for centuries.

From supermoon to blue moon, here's everything explained in one place. When is the next full moon?
The next full moon, otherwise known as the Worm Moon (among many other names), is set to grace Earth's skies on March 9th. It will also be the first supermoon of 2020. How often does a full moon occur? A full moon occurs every 29.5 days [though by our human counting it's one every 28 days]… More

    .
The Buddha at Borobudur, Java, Indonesia
The Buddha regarded the full moon as having special significance as a monthly holiday.

He was born, he fully awakened, and he chose to pass into final nirvana under the full moon, all in the holiday month of Vesak.

He also knew it to be of special significance as one of four monthly "fasting" holidays, a time when he encouraged all people to observe the Eight Precepts for a full day.

This is called uposatha (lit. "fasting"), the weekly fasting day (usually observed by fasting from noon until the next morning) and as a time to be compassionately vegetarian.

The Moon Goddess Selene, Greek lunar deity, with the human Endymion (wiki)
    .
The four days of the month on which uposatha is observed is the full-moon day, the new-moon day, and the first and last quarter-moon days.

On full-moon and new-moon days, the Monastic Disciplinary Code (Pātimokkha) is read in front of the assembled community of monastics. For laypeople, the four moon-days are a time of observance when Buddhists visit monasteries and take upon themselves the training of observing the Eight Precepts for 24 hours, meditating and listening to sutras.

Lost Ancient Humans of Antarctica (video)

Gaia.com via After Skool, Feb. 25, 2020; Pat Macpherson, Dhr. Seven (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Native American origins in Middle East?
The earth has gone through countless changes in its history. Antarctica at one time was uncovered with no ice. So it could have been home to ancient humans. As we develop new methods for uncovering the ice there now, we are beginning to see the possibilities resting beneath the cover.

Mainstream ideology puts forward a popular "Out of Africa" theory, which tracks all humans originating in Africa and spreading out by land only across the planet. However, genetic research is finding evidence that makes the real story far more complex.

One of these findings is the discovery of giants in Paracas on the American coast of Peru, who left behind skulls and artifacts and a revered history as rulers. The other finding is of the Denisovan people of Siberia, which reveals an entirely new, intelligent human subspecies (first discovered in 2008). Findings like these cause us to have to rewrite human history.

March 9: Day Without Women, Mexico (video)

NT; Jason Slotkin, Diaa Hadid, Philip Reeves (NPR, March 8, 2020); Eds., Wisdom Quarterly

Marchers in Santiago, Chile, flooded streets as part of Int'l Women's Day marches. Confrontations with police were reported at events here, in Turkey, and other countries (Esteban Felix/AP).

    .
Organizers and marchers have been out marking International Women's Day. A holiday with its origins in the labor and socialist movements of the 20th century, the day now recognized by the United Nations occasions rallies and events from Caracas to Baghdad to spotlight issues facing women globally.

This year, rallies in Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan were met with violence while marchers in Turkey and Chile were confronted by police. The COVID-19 outbreak forced cancellations while others boldly marched, defying fears of the epidemic.

Here's a round-up of the news and pictures to come from International Women's Day 2020.

Spectators chant "Justice!" after Chilean singer Mon Laferte was joined by Mexico's Vivir Quintana and a chorus of dozens to perform an anti-femicide song during a concert on the eve of International Women's Day in Mexico City Saturday (Rebecca Blackwell/AP).

This year's International Women's Day comes on the eve of a planned "women's strike" in Mexico Monday.

Spurred on by feminist activists, the strike comes in the wake of intensifying protests and demands for government actions against the often grisly murders of women in the country.

A woman paints the names of more than 3,000 victims of femicide on the Zocalo ("plaza") in Mexico City, Sunday. Protests against gender violence in Mexico have intensified in recent years amid an increase in killings of women and girls (Rebecca Blackwell/AP).
    .
Government estimates say 10 Mexican women are killed daily with more than 3,800 killed last year alone. Many of those cases involve sexual assault. The strike calling on women to abstain from work and school for a day has gained traction, The Associated Press reports, reaching far beyond the Mexico's activist circles.

Marta Patricia Ramírez, a housewife, told the wire service she organized a neighborhood event to discuss harassment. Dentist Jesica Solis will keep her office closed. Marta Pérez told the AP she won't lift a plate Monday and that her daughter will not go on social media.

The strike has also gotten the go-ahead from many large employers in Mexico. Walmart says its 108,000 female workers are allowed to join the action. Ford, banking and media company Grupo Salinas, and baked goods producer Bimbo are supporting the movement, The Washington Post adds.

The Post also reports that 21 million women are registered as workers in Mexico.

In the days leading up to the strike, women have been out in force with thousands attending events. On Saturday a concert performed entirely by female artists packed Mexico City's Zocalo, the metropolis's main square. Attendees chanted "justice" as a singers performed the anti-femicide anthem, "Song Without Fear," the AP reports.

On Sunday, activists painted more than 3,000 names of victims across that same square. Some 20,000 were expected to march in the Mexican capital Sunday.
    • Coronavirus: events canceled, others march despite fears
Regions hit hardest by the spreading coronavirus outbreak felt its impact on International Women's Day celebrations. Both South Korea and China — the countries reporting the highest rates of infections — called off public events.

China used the day to highlight work of female medical staff fighting the coronavirus outbreak. Elsewhere in Asia, The Bangkok Post reports marches went ahead in Indonesia, the Philippines, as well as in Thailand, where women demanded increased labor protections and greater rights.

While Italy, the European country with the greatest number of infections, was in partial lockdown Sunday, celebrations, rallies and marches continued on as planned across the continent, according to Voice of America.

Clashes at International Women's Day marches
Not every celebration of the day of women's rights advocacy went peacefully. In several countries, marchers were faced with opposition by both religious hardliners as well as local authorities.

In Islamabad, Pakistan, demonstrators at a rival rally of hardline Islamists attempted to break through a police barrier, hurling objects, including shoes and stones, at women participating in the march.

In Turkey, police blocked hundreds of women in Istanbul from entering the city's Taksim Square. The roads leading to the city's famed square were closed because they were "not classified as designated areas for assembly and demonstrations according to law," says a governor's statement quoted by Reuters.

Reuters adds last year's marchers in Turkey were met with tear gas by police attempting to break up their crowd.

In Chile, there were several reports of clashes with police and a handful of arrests. In the capital Santiago, reports of crowd size conflicted, with organizers saying 2 million marchers flooded the streets while police said it was only 120,000.

The march happened amid ongoing tensions in Chile. Sometimes-violent anti-government protests over social inequality began in October and continue sporadically. Marchers on Sunday decried abuses they said Chile's security services carried out against women during those protests.
