Is punk dead? The Punk Rock Museum

Sassy punk and failed politician Jack
This morning T.S.O.L's Jack Grisham was the "Stay or Go" regular Friday segment guest music judge on The Heidi & Frank Show (KLOS 95.5 FM, Los Angeles).
As for the question, Is punk dead? It never seemed to be until we saw our first "Punk's not dead" patch. Who said it was, and why give that idea more airtime? Of course, it's been decades since that happened, and now there's a museum, and if it is dead, "pop punk" killed it.

But how could it be dead if even the Sixties' hippie movement is not dead but lives on at Phish and other shows. The music survives, and the sentiment is strong. Punk rock really was about something, not least going against the stream. Noah Levine capitalized on this with his Dharma Punx book and a meditation and sobriety movement that aimed at turning that rebellion inward to something longer lasting than a fashion statement or general nihilistic attitude. Is it dead? Ask Russ Rankin, Finn McKenty, Punk Rock Girl, and Lorna Doom, and we'll let them be the arbiters.

Punk Rock Museum?
It was code blue, um, code red when the legendary L.A. hardcore punk band (with OC Goth beginnings) played The Punk Rock Museum's March parking lot show.

There's next to no rock left on Los Angeles airwaves, just mostly dinosaur rock from KLOS FM.
.
It was an unforgettable day of music, an incredible event that featured five powerhouse bands, each bringing their unique energy and style. The legendary T.S.O.L. headlined, taking the stage to close out the evening in epic fashion. The show started with local Las Vegas trio The Dollheads, followed by the high-energy Knuckleheadz, and the electrifying Playboy Manbaby, and the Voodoo Glow Skulls.

Tickets got fans into the show and into the museum, too (entrance fee included). The first 80 who arrived got seating to watch a round table discussion that started at 12:30 pm, moderated by the legendary George Stroumboulopolous in a riveting, in-depth conversation, exploring the global cultural impact of punk, featuring Fat Mike, Kevin Lyman, T.S.O.L's Jack Grisham, photographer Edward Colver, Vinnie Fiorello, and Jennifer Finch. It was an action-packed day!

THE PUNK ROCK MUSEUM

Never Mind the Bollocks, here’s The Punk Rock Museum! It’s been 45+ years since punk rock pogo’d its way into music, fashion, film, and popular culture. On April 1st, 2023, The Punk Rock Museum in Las Vegas opened its doors to proudly shove in our faces the history, culture, and absurdity of rock n’ roll’s bastard stepchild. This museum invites lifelong fans and curious looky-loos of all ages to experience a hands-on and uniquely punk rock experience.

March 30, 2025: Edward Colver: The Eye of Los Angeles Punk exhibition (opening reception)
Edward Colver has immortalized some of the most iconic figures of the 20th century through his striking photography. Best known for his raw and electrifying images of the early punk scene, Colver’s work captures the energy, rebellion, and spirit of a movement that reshaped music, fashion, and art in Los Angeles. His photographs are more than just visuals—they are cultural artifacts that document the birth and evolution of punk.

While his legacy is deeply tied to punk rock, Colver’s career extends far beyond, spanning a diverse range of subjects and artistic expressions.

Renowned photographer Edward Colver captured Los Angeles punk rock at its inception. His iconic photographs chronicle the heartbeat of the movement. By the end of 1983, he had provided the cover art for many L.A. punk records like:

(ESOTERICA) April 4, 2025: Among the Dead Sea Scrolls, a mysterious scroll chiseled into copper details the location of more than 60 treasures of gold, silver, ritual vessels, and more.

Discovered in 1952 and opened in 1955, the Copper Scroll has fired the imaginations of scholars and treasure-hunters alike. But the language of the text is difficult: Strange Greek letters appear, and ancient abbreviations have made the text difficult to decode.

What are the treasures of the Copper Scroll? Where do they come from, the mysterious Essenes or the Jerusalem Temple? Are the treasures still to be found in the hills and deserts around Jericho? Let's explore the 3Q15, the Copper Scroll

The Buddha's relics found in China?

"Relics" are so common now that replicas flood the market and found on Etsy. Real? 😒

Beyond Science with Brilliant Host
(Beyond Science) This name is especially familiar among Buddhists because Scythian (Saka, Shakyamuni) Prince Siddhartha Gautama went on to become the Buddha. Now 2,500-year-old relics (sariras, holy remains) of the Buddha have been found in a Chinese village.
  • The Buddha was an arahant but so much more.
Siddhartha Gautama is THE Buddha because ordinary enlightened individuals, who are very rare and special, are called arahants, those who have achieved bodhi (enlightenment or awakening). But a buddha is far more rare in that "silent buddhas," known as pacceka-buddhas, discover the path, the Middle Way to enlightenment, on their own without a teacher. They are unable to teach that path. Supremely enlightened or samma-sam-buddhas not only discover the path but are able to effectively teach it and establish the Dharma in the world to benefit countless human and deva (shining ones, light-) beings. Although arahants might be called "personal buddhas," they are disciples of one of the extraordinarily rare supremely awakened buddhas. To call the Buddha "Buddha" is to fail to recognize his extraordinary rareness and diminish his importance in this world cycle. Indeed, there have been and will be other buddhas, but they come along so rarely as to be inconceivably precious.
This rare matter has the power to multiply.
In a stunning discovery, 2,500-year-old remains believed to be linked to the historical Buddha were uncovered in a remote Chinese village.

Archeologists and historians are calling this one of the most important spiritual and historical finds in decades. 2,500-Year-Old BUDDHA’s Remains Found in Chinese Village | Watch (MSN)

Learn to meditate this spring (How to)

Beginning meditators are babies in white, so go easy. Meditation may make one sleepy at first.
.
An outfit just for practice helps.
It's spring. This is a good time, maybe the best time, to begin a regular meditation practice,. Well, actually the best time would have been seven years ago, but the second-best time is right now. Sitting can graduate to walking meditation, mindfulness in nature, then deep stillness and clarity to see things (vipassana) as they truly are.

Do the basics: Put on all white. Find a quiet spot apart from distractions. Use this spot over and over again. It becomes powerful. Set down a mat and cushion (a bundle of leaves or grass is enough to get the tailbone higher than the knees). Sit. Inhale deeply. Release. Do it again a few times, without forcing the air out. It's just about letting go completely, so completely that the body hangs as if held up by a clothing hanger, not stiff, not slack.

Straighter is more comfortable, even though it doesn't seem like it at first. Posture is important to attention. Bring (advert) the attention to the present moment, this moment, and to stay in just this moment, remain aware of the breath. Which breath? This breath, just the one happening now all by itself. Become the watcher (not the commenter, fixer, improver, slowdowner, or anything else), just the watcher. This is mindfulness -- clear awareness of the present without evaluation.

Whoa, what a trip! What was that? I want that again!
Set a time limit in advance and keep it. Even if it would be nice to go longer because it is going so well, know the time of rising. Even if it is going horribly with raving lunatic thoughts of a psychopath with lurid fantasies and wrath, lust and revenge, delusion and a lightshow, know the time of rising. The mind will thank you later.

Ten minutes is a good start time, slowly working up to an hourlong sit. That seems impossible now, but in time, whaddyaknow, it suddenly is possible. What changed? I'dunno. This practice is about persistence. It does itself and then there is no effort. The enemies of that are expectations, unsettled greed or desire for achieving something, and the Five Hindrances. They will come to hinder. They are already present. They can be overcome. But whether or not they have been overcome, persist. This is spring. This is the beginning. Have "beginner's mind" in place of the "monkey mind" that usually rules the cage. Smile. It helps.

Instructions are confusing because it's so simple.
It is easy to say that "meditation is NOT about thinking." That's clear. That's easy to see. Don't indulge thought; just let them be by turning your attention to this subtle breath that keeps changing. What is difficult to grasp is that "meditation is NOT about not-thinking." Not-thinking may happen. It doesn't matter. As that is not the goal, if it doesn't happen, it's okay. Giving attention to one object and bringing attention back and back again and again ("Begin again" as Sharon Salzberg says) is what is important.

The mind like a petulant and insolent child will resist. Let it. Bring it back. Do not scold it or become upset. Let it be. Surrender completely to this moment, whatever is in this moment, not being moved to do anything no matter what the mind says it must do. See what happens. Could the mind be wrong no matter what it feels or demands or insists is true?

How did Siddhartha Gautama do it?
We'll never see things as they really are so long as we keep believing that we already are seeing them that way. We have never been seeing them that way. If we had, we'd awaken. We'd be enlightened, which is to say, Dependent Origination would make sense. And it doesn't, does it? (Hint: It's a practice, not a theory). That's a whole different kind of meditation called insight (vipassana) after getting good at this kind, which is called serenity (samatha). Don't jump ahead. Let it go. (If all else fails, sign up for a free 10-day Goenka retreat. Everyone should do at least one in life).

Unabridged. Stand-up comedian and author Maria Bamford narrates her Simon & Schuster publication, which has garnered 4.4 out of 5 stars with 994 ratings. It is a Goodreads Choice Award nominee.

From “weird, scary, ingenious” (The New York Times) stand-up comedian Maria Bamford, an instant New York Times bestselling, brutally honest, and “laugh-out-loud funny” (Jennette McCurdy, #1 New York Times bestselling author) memoir about show business, mental health, and the comfort of rigid belief systems — from Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People, to Richard Simmons, to 12-step programs.

This is Not Happening: Psych Ward

Maria Bamford is a comedian’s comedian (an outsider among outsiders) and has always fought to find a place to belong. From struggling with an eating disorder as a child of the 1980s, to navigating a career in the arts (and medical debt and psychiatric institutionalization), she has tried just about every method possible to not only be a part of the world, but to want to be a part of it.

I'd have to be crazy to be a conservative.
In Bamford’s “trademark blend of disarming intimacy and dark whimsy” (Publishers Weekly), Sure, I’ll Join Your Cult brings us on a quest to participate in something. With sincerity and transparency, she recounts every anonymous fellowship she has joined (including but not limited to: Debtors Anonymous, Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous, and Overeaters Anonymous), every hypomanic episode (from worrying about selling out under capitalism to enforcing union rules on her Netflix TV show set to protect her health), and every easy 1-to-3-step recipe for fudge in between.

(Let's get inside the artist's head) Maria Bamford on cults

Packed with “Bamford’s brilliance, relentless humor, and insatiable instinct for survival (Library Journal), this memoir explores what it means to keep going, and to be a member of society (or any group she’s invited to) despite not being very good at it.

In turn, she hopes to transform isolating experiences into comedy that will make you feel less alone (without turning into a cult following). NOTE: Purchase of this title includes accompanying PDF in your Audible Library along with the audio. Sure, I'll Join Your Cult

Elon Musk ruined by his trans child

I 💔 you, Daddy, but don't talk to me. I'm dead to you. But "I look pretty good for a dead b*tch"
Like, I don't even care what she, I mean he, is -- whatever, could care less, honestly; he's dead.
Leave my CyberTrucks and Teslas alone, or Trump and I are coming for you all (DOGE).

How Elon Musk's trans daughter is sabotaging him (Elon's angry)
Wealth inequality is the world's biggest problem.
(Channel 100 News with Evie) March 26, 2025: Vivian Wilson, Elon Musk's estranged daughter, has given her second ever interview to Teen Vogue -- and she is not holding back when it comes to her dodgy DOGE dad.

Since taking on the role of head of DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) in the Trump’s administration, Elon Musk has been making headlines every day.

Be nice to your kid, and get Teslas off our roads!
His frequent outbursts about DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) have once again drawn attention to his own trans daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson, who has not minced her words when it comes to how she feels about him and the Trump administration.

Elon Musk didn't seem to like this and doubled down on his claims that Vivian is “dead” this week. But outside of being Elon’s daughter and the self-proclaimed queen of threads, there is so much more to Vivian than meets the eye. Let’s get to know Vivian Wilson, the accidental voice of a generation.

What does trans son say?
My son, Xavier, is dead. He died of the woke mind virus. I will kill this virus.
.
I don't know this bitch, each may say of other.
(AccessOnline.com) Elon Musk’s estranged daughter [former son] is clapping back at his transphobic comment. Over the weekend, Vivian Wilson responded to her dad’s recent post on X (Twitter) that refers to her by her old [male] name and appears to talk about her transition writing, “Exactly, my son Xavier, died. He was killed by the woke mind virus. Now the woke mind virus will die.”
She posted her cheeky response on Instagram Reels, mouthing a viral sound that says, “I look pretty good for a dead b*tch.”

Vivian is Elon and Justine Wilson’s daughter [former son]. In Vivian Wilson’s March 20th Teen Vogue interview, she recalled coming out to her parents, revealing that her mom was very supportive but her dad didn’t take it as well.

“No, he was not as supportive as my mom,” she said. “First of all, I had not talked to him in months — in months — so I had to get f*cking parental consent to get testosterone blockers and [goddamned hormone replacement therapy].”

Short Attn Span Theater: April Fools pranks

April Fools prank Denmark, Copenhagen subway (in reality retired car from Stockholm subway)

Annual "Washing of the Lions," April 1, 1857
April Fools' Day or April Fool's Day (sometimes called All Fools' Day [1]) is an annual custom on the first of April, consisting of pranks, practical jokes, and hoaxes.

Jokesters often expose their actions by shouting "April Fools!" at the recipient. The corporate mass media (and even serious spiritual journals) can be involved with these pranks, which may be revealed as such the following day.

The custom of setting aside a day for playing harmless pranks upon our neighbors has been common in the world historically [2].

Origins of April Fools' Day
The Fool Tarot Card meaning (edelwyn.com)
Although many theories have been proposed, the origin of April Fools' Day is not exactly known.

A disputed association between April 1st and foolishness is in Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales (1392) [3]. In the "Nun's Priest's Tale," a vain cock, Chauntecleer, is tricked by a fox "Since March began, full thirty days and two" [4, 5], that is, the 32nd day from March 1st, which is April 1st [6]. However, it is not clear that Chaucer was referencing April 1st since...

In 1508, French poet Eloy d'Amerval referred to a poisson d'avril (April fool but literally "April's fish"), possibly the first reference to the celebration in France [9].

Some historians suggest that April Fools' originated because, in the Middle Ages, New Year's Day was celebrated on March 25 in most European towns [10], with a holiday that in some areas of France, specifically, ended on April 1 [11, 12], and those who celebrated New Year's Day on January 1 made fun of those who celebrated on other dates by the invention of April Fools' Day [13].

The use of January 1 as New Year's Day became common in France only in the mid-16th century [8], and that date was not adopted officially until 1564, by the Edict of Roussillon, as called for during the Council of Trent in 1563 [14].

However, there are issues with this theory because there is an unambiguous reference to April Fools' Day in a 1561 poem by Flemish poet Eduard de Dene of a nobleman who sent his servant on foolish errands on April 1st, predating the change [8].

April Fools' Day was also an established tradition in Great Britain before January 1 was established as the start of the calendar year [15, 16]. More: April Fools' Day
