Giant: The Dwarf Monk (sutra)

K. Nizamis and Ven. Thanissaro (trans.) via accesstoinsight.org, Apara Lakuntaka Bhaddiya Sutra: "Another Discourse About Bhaddiya the Dwarf" (Ud 7.5 PTS: Ud 76) edited by Wisdom Quarterly

Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One [the Buddha] was dwelling in Sāvatthi, in Jeta Forest, in Anāthapiṇḍika's park.

At that time Venerable Bhaddiya the Dwarf approached walking close behind a large number of monks. The Blessed One saw him from afar, walking close behind many other monks -- of bad complexion, bad appearance, dwarfish, of a form that would be despised by most monks [1].

Seeing Ven. Bhaddiya the Dwarf, the Blessed One addressed the monks: "Meditators, do you see that monk from afar, walking close behind those many other monks, the one with the bad complexion, bad appearance, dwarfish, of a form that would be despised by most monks?"

"Yes, it is just so, venerable sir."

"Meditators, that monk is of great power, great eminence. There is no well-gained meditative attainment that has not already been attained by that monk. For the benefit for which persons of good lineage rightly go forth from home into the left-home life, the ultimate culmination of the supreme life [of a wandering ascetic], in this very life, he himself, having seen with his own eyes and realized the higher knowledge, having personally attained it, he abides."

Then, having understood the significance of this moment, the Blessed One breathed an inspired utterance:

Faultless, adorned in white,
the one-way chariot rolls on:
See it coming, undisturbed,
with oozing flow cut off, nirvanered [2].

NOTES
1. The Commentary (of Dhammapāla, post 5th Century CE) says yebhuyyena bhikkhūnaṃ paribhūtarūpan'ti puthujjanabhikkhūhi ohīḷitarūpaṃ (PTS Ud-A 369). "'For most of the monks, having a despised kind of form': having a kind of form scorned or viewed with disgust [ohīliṭa] by the monks who are just ordinary people [puthujjanas]." See also SN 21.6.
2. See also SN 41.5, in which Ven. Kāmabhū recites this stanza to a lay devotee named Citta, and asks him how its meaning should be understood. Citta then proceeds to offer his interpretation of its meaning.

The Dwarf
Ven. Thanissaro (trans.), Lakuṇṭha Sutra: "The Dwarf" (Ud 7.5, PTS: Ud 76) edited by W.Q.
Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. On that occasion Ven. Bhaddiya the Dwarf, following behind a large number of monks, was coming to see the Blessed One.

From afar the Blessed One saw Ven. Bhaddiya the Dwarf coming, following behind a large number of monks -- ugly, unsightly, stunted, treated with condescension [1] by many of the monks. Seeing him, the Blessed One addressed the monks:

"Meditators, do you see that monk coming from afar, following behind that large number of monks, the ugly, unsightly, stunted one treated with condescension by many of the monks?"

"Yes, venerable sir."

"That, meditators, is a monk of great power and great might. The attainment already attained by that monk is not of the sort easily attained by anyone. And by means of it he has reached and abides in the supreme goal of the supreme life for which persons of good lineage rightly go forth from home into the left-home life, directly knowing and seeing it for himself right in here  and now."

Then, realizing the significance of this, the Blessed One on that occasion exclaimed:

Faultless,
canopied in white,
the single-spoked chariot rolls along.
See him coming, untroubled:
one whose stream is cut,
free from all bonds [2].

NOTES
1. The Commentary notes that misbehaving monks liked to stroke his hands and catch hold of his ears.
2. In SN 41.5, Citta the householder explains this verse as follows:

Faultless stands for virtues.
Canopied in white stands for release.
Single-spoked stands for mindfulness.
Rolls along stands for coming and going.
Chariot stands for this body composed of the four elements...

Passion [greed] is a trouble; aversion [hatred] is a trouble; delusion [ignorance, confusion, wrong view] is a trouble. These have been abandoned by a meditator whose defilements (asavas, kilesas, samyojanas) have been cut off — their roots destroyed, made [barren] like a palmyra stump, deprived of the conditions of development, not destined for any future rebirth. That's why the meditator whose defilements have ended is said to be untroubled.

Him coming stands for the arahant.

Stream stands for craving. That has been abandoned by a meditator whose defilements have been cut off — its roots destroyed, made [barren] like a palmyra stump, deprived of the conditions of development, not destined for any future rebirth. That's why a meditator whose defilements have been cut off is said to be one whose stream is cut.

Passion is a bond; aversion is a bond; delusion is a bond. These have been abandoned by a meditator whose defilements have been cut off — their roots destroyed, made like a palmyra stump, deprived of the conditions of development, not destined for any future rebirth. That is why a meditator whose defilements have been cut off is said to be free of bonds.

I will bend this sharp spear by hand.
Thus have I heard. At one time the Buddha was staying in Savatthi.

There he said, "Meditators, suppose there were a sharp blade (spear), and a person were to say, 'Using only my hand I will bend back this sharp blade, fold it in two, and roll it up.'

"What do you think, Would that person be able to bend it, fold it, and roll it up by hand?"

"No, venerable sir. Sharp blades are difficult to bend, fold, and roll up. That person would reap only weariness and vexation."

I will infest, possess your mind. Mwah ha ha.
"In the same way, meditators, when a meditator's liberation through loving-kindness (metta) is cultivated, pursued, developed, handed the reins, made a basis, grounded, steadied, consolidated, and skillfully undertaken, if any nonhuman beings were to think of possessing that meditator's mind, they would only reap weariness and vexation.

"So train yourselves, 'Our [heart's] liberation through loving-kindness will be cultivated, pursued, developed, handed the reins, made a basis, grounded, steadied, consolidated, and skillfully undertaken. Train yourselves in this way."

Unfit evil war criminal hypocrite loser and liar
In a disastrous interview with level-headed Chris Wallace, the POTUS tried to bring receipts he didn’t have, while Wallace fact-checked the scheisse out of him. Here Don John proves he's stupid and a liar or, worse than that, a stupid-liar. Still, he's better than Hillary, who's a smart-liar -- a crafty, tricky, truncoat attorney.

The alternative to Google Corporation's YouTube
An ad hominem (against or "to the person") argument ignores the information and attacks the source or some aspect of the source instead. Dr. Stella Immanuel, MD is a practicing physician in Houston, Texas, who has successfully treated over 350 coronavirus (SARS-2, COVID-19) patients with commonplace drugs (she names them) and the supplemental mineral zinc. She's also some kind of Christian evangelist, witchdoctor, pastor, and superstitious Cameroonian that believes what her culture taught her. Science and epidemiology in the field are not good enough for her critics until the gatekeepers show some double-blind studies to prove what they want proven and ignore what they want ignored. This disease is going to be a big money-maker, the biggest.

"Masks do not prevent Covid," she says. But these commonplace malaria drugs do. Yet they're suppressed, banned, tested at toxic levels, proving that there are forces out there attempting to profit from this epidemic/pandemic scare. Dr. Tony Fauci (NIH), Bill Gates (WHO), and others will make millions, and Big Pharma will make billions from government contracts for harmful vaccines that do not provide immunity but are nonetheless "better than nothing."

Who gets VAXXED out of fear perhaps deserves the medical consequences one is not allowed to sue the pharmaceutical companies for injuries due to their multinational-corporation legal immunity. They are the smart profiteers. Consumers are the guinea pigs having their health compromised by allopathic toxins and iatrogenic treatments that "cure" nothing.

The Affection Sutra (video)

Fifth Gear in a Toyota Yaris; Dhr. Seven, Sheldon S., Ashley Wells (eds.) based on Ven. Thanissaro (trans.), the Pema Sutta: "The Affection Discourse" (AN 4.200, PTS: A ii 213), Wisdom Quarterly
You love me? - I'd beat up anybody for you. - Aww, that's the sweetest thing anyone's ever said!
.
When things fall apart, what then? It may happen that, without Electronic Stability Control, the car flips. You roll it in an accident. Driving a machine built before 2012? It could happen. Things happen, even if this unlikely event never takes place because you drive more carefully. Other things will happen, and then what? We better keep Pema Chodron's book nearby to read and be ready.

The Affection Sutra
When things fall apart? They'll never fall apart, Babe! This is forever. - Sure it is, Dear.
.
"Meditators, four things are born. What are the four?
    Heart of Affection/Aversion
  1. affection born of affection
  2. aversion born of affection
  3. affection born of aversion
  4. aversion born of aversion
1. "How is affection born of affection? An individual is pleasing, appealing, and charming to [another] individual. Others treat that individual as pleasing, appealing, and charming, and the other one thinks, 'This individual is pleasing, appealing, and charming to me. And others treat this individual as pleasing, appealing, and charming.' This gives rise to affection. This is how affection is born of affection.

2. "How is aversion born of affection? An individual is pleasing, appealing, and charming to (another) individual. Others treat that individual as displeasing, unappealing, and not charming, and the other one thinks, 'This individual is pleasing, appealing, and charming. Yet, others treat this individual as displeasing, unappealing, and not charming.' This gives rise to aversion [toward them]. This is how aversion is born of affection.

3. "How is affection born of aversion? An individual is displeasing, unappealing, and not charming to (another) individual. Others treat that individual as displeasing, unappealing, and not charming, and the other one thinks, 'This individual is displeasing, unappealing, and not charming. And others treat this individual as displeasing, unappealing, and not charming.' This gives rise to affection [for them]. This is how affection is born of aversion.

It was a mistake. He was badmouthing you, so I punched him in the mouth. I love you so much!
.
4. "How is aversion born of aversion? An individual is displeasing, unappealing, and not charming to (another) individual. Yet others treat that individual as pleasing, appealing, and charming, and the other one thinks, 'This individual is displeasing, unappealing, and not charming. Yet others treat this individual as pleasing, appealing, and charming.' This gives rise to aversion [toward them]. This is how aversion is born of aversion.

"Meditators, these are the four things that are born.

Meditation (jhana)

"Now, when a meditator, quite withdrawn from sensuality, withdrawn from unskillful mental factors, enters and abides in the first meditative absorption (jhana or zen or dhyana) — with rapture and pleasure born of withdrawal, accompanied by applied and sustained attention — then any affection one has that is born of affection does not come up.

[Moreover] "any aversion that is born of affection... any affection that is born of aversion... any aversion that is born of aversion does not come up.

"When a meditator... enters and abides in the second absorption... enters and abides in the third absorption... enters and abides in the fourth absorption, then any affection that is born of affection does not come up. Any aversion born of affection... any affection born of aversion... any aversion born of aversion does not come up.

"When a meditator, bringing about the end of the mental defilements [and thus becoming one of the noble ones], enters and abides in the defilement-free liberation by insight, liberation by wisdom, having known and verified them for oneself here and now, then any affection born of affection is abandoned, its root destroyed, made like a palmyra stump [that never again regrows when cut down], deprived of the conditions of development, no longer destined for future rebirths.

[Moreover] "any aversion born of affection... any affection born of aversion... any aversion born of aversion is abandoned, its root destroyed, made [barren] like a palmyra stump, deprived of the conditions of development, no longer destined for future rebirths.

Good results
"This is said to be a meditator who does not pull in, does not push away, does not smolder, does not flare up, and does not burn.

"How does a meditator pull in [crave, grasp, and cling]? A meditator assumes
  1. form to be self, or assumes self possesses form, or form is in self, or self is in form. One assumes
  2. feeling to be self, or assumes self possesses feeling, or feeling is in self, or self is in feeling. One assumes
  3. perception to be self, or assumes self possesses perception, or perception is in self, or self is in perception. One assumes
  4. mental formations [fabrications] to be self, or assumes self possesses formations, or formations are in self, or self is in formations. One assumes
  5. consciousness to be self, or assumes self possesses consciousness, or consciousness is in self, or self is in consciousness. [These are the Five Aggregates clung to as self.] This is how a meditator pulls in.
The way of peace and happiness to enlightenment
"How does a meditator not pull in? [This happens when] a meditator does not assume form to be self, or assume that self possesses form, or form is in self, or self is in form.

"One does not assume feeling to be self... does not assume perception to be self... does not assume formations to be self... does not assume consciousness to be self, or assume self possesses consciousness, or consciousness is in self, or self is in consciousness. This is how a meditator does not pull in.

"How does a meditator push away [express aversion]? A meditator returns insult for insult, returns anger for anger, quarrels with one who is quarreling. This is how a meditator pushes away.

"How does a meditator not push away? A meditator refrains from returning insult with insult, refrains from returning anger with anger, refrains from quarrelling with one who quarrels. This is how a meditator does not push away.

"How does a meditator smolder? [Holding the deluded wrong view that] there being 'I am,' there comes to be 'I am here,' there comes to be 'I am like this'... 'I am otherwise'... 'I am bad'... 'I am good'... 'I might be'... 'I might be here'... 'I might be like this'... 'I might be otherwise'... 'May I be'... 'May I be here'... 'May I be like this'... 'May I be otherwise'... 'I will be'... 'I will be here'... 'I will be like this'... 'I will be otherwise.'

"How does a meditator not smolder? [Holding the insightful right view that] there not being 'I am,' there does not come to be 'I am here,' there does not come to be 'I am like this'... 'I am otherwise'... 'I am bad'... 'I am good'... 'I might be'... 'I might be here'... 'I might be like this'... 'I might be otherwise'... 'May I be'... 'May I be here'... 'May I be like this'... 'May I be otherwise'... 'I will be'... 'I will be here'... 'I will be like this'... 'I will be otherwise.'

Give me a KISS and watch me flare up.
"How does a meditator flare up? [Holding the wrong view that] there being 'I am because of this,' there comes to be 'I am here because of this,' there comes to be 'I am like this because of this'... 'I am otherwise because of this'... 'I am bad because of this'... 'I am good because of this'... 'I might be because of this'... 'I might be here because of this'... 'I might be like this because of this'... 'I might be otherwise because of this'... 'May I be because of this'... 'May I be here because of this'... 'May I be like this because of this'... 'May I be otherwise because of this'... 'I will be because of this'... 'I will be here because of this'... 'I will be like this because of this'... 'I will be otherwise because of this.'

KISS schmiss! I prefer staying cool.
"How does a meditator not flare up? [Holding the right view that] there not being 'I am because of this,' there does not come to be 'I am here because of this,' there does not come to be 'I am like this because of this'...

"How does a meditator burn? A meditator's conceit of 'I am' is not abandoned, its roots not destroyed, not made [barren] like a palmyra stump, not deprived of the conditions of development, is destined for future rebirth. This is how a meditator burns.

"How does a meditator not burn? A meditator's conceit of 'I am' is abandoned, its root destroyed, made [barren] like a palmyra stump, deprived of the conditions of development, is not destined for future rebirth. This is how a meditator does not burn."

Buddhist Realism & Dark Comedy (video)

Prof. Chris Kelley, ThinkOlio, Strand, 5/5/17; Sheldon S., Ashley Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

ThinkOlio Presents: Buddhist Realism and Dark Comedy: It's Funny Because It's True
(Strand Book Store) The historical Buddha is believed to have taught that the fundamental nature of the human condition is suffused with feelings of existential angst and abiding dissatisfaction (dukkha, disappointment). Such "realism" is not exclusive to Buddhism, however.

Why do Buddhist meditators smile like the B?
Any dark comedy stand-up comedian knows this already, because making jokes about the reality of life usually gets big laughs of recognition. Or as they say in the stand-up business — it “kills.” Like the Buddha, the comic can be a powerful medium for communicating the more disquieting and shunned truths about life.

Jewish Hitler? Hey, you can't joke about Nazis!
Join Christopher Kelley in a provocative university talk on the merits of dark comedy as a vehicle for embracing the truth of the human condition [and the Buddha's antidote and solution to the problem of suffering].

Between video clips of comedians like Louis C.K., Tig Notaro, and Andy Kaufman, The New School and CUNY Professor of Buddhist Studies Christopher Kelley discusses why both Buddhism and dark comedy offer a kind of "therapy" for eliminating the existential anxiety that comes from being the kind of animal that lives with the knowledge of its own inexorable deaths and rebirths.

Dr. Christopher Kelley holds a doctorate in Buddhist Studies from Columbia University, where he studied under the guidance of Prof. Robert Thurman (Uma Thurman's dad and the Dalai Lama's long time Western friend). He currently teaches at Brooklyn College (CUNY) and the New School University in the City of New York. Recorded on Cinco de Mayo, May 5, 2017.

"CURE" for COVID-19 revealed? (video)

https://www.breitbart.com/tech/2020/07/27/facebook-censors-viral-video-of-doctors-capitol-hill-coronavirus-press-conference/
These are real doctors with names to look up.
Facebook has removed a video posted by Breitbart News earlier today [Monday, 7/27/20], which was the top-performing Facebook post in the world Monday afternoon, of a press conference in D.C. held by the group America’s Frontline Doctors and organized and sponsored by the Tea Party Patriots.

What to do when WHO and CDC lie to us?
The press conference featured Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC) and frontline doctors sharing their views and opinions on coronavirus and the medical response to the pandemic. YouTube (which is owned by Google) and Twitter subsequently removed footage of the press conference as well.
The livestream had accumulated over 17 million views by the time Facebook censored it citing that they obey anything the W.H.O. tells them and ignores science and anything else when they are told to.
In terms of viral velocity, the post was beating content from many other prominent accounts on Facebook today, including Hillary Clinton, Rev. Franklin Graham, and Kim Kardashian.
My job and OT depend on fear.
Over 185,000 viewers were concurrently watching the stream when it aired live Monday afternoon.
The event, hosted by the organization America’s Frontline Doctors, a group founded by Dr. Simone Gold, a board-certified physician and attorney, and made up of medical doctors, came together to address what the group calls a “massive disinformation campaign” about the coronavirus. Representative Norman also spoke at the event.
“If Americans continue to let so-called experts and media personalities make their decisions, the great American experiment of a Constitutional Republic with Representative Democracy, will cease,” reads the event’s information page.
The event was organized and sponsored by the Tea Party Patriots.
“We’ve removed this video for sharing false information about cures and treatments for COVID-19,” a Facebook company spokesman, Andy Stone, told Breitbart News. The company did not specify what portion of the video it ruled to be “false information,” who it consulted to make that ruling, and on what basis it was made.
Stone replied to New York Times tech columnist Kevin Roose on Twitter regarding the video:
Stone then added that the platform would direct users who had interacted with the post to information on “myths debunked by the WHO.”
Facebook’s decision to censor the livestream was quickly followed by YouTube, the Google-owned video-sharing platform. The video had over 80,000 views on YouTube prior to its removal.
Following Facebook and YouTube’s removal of the video, Twitter followed suit, removing Breitbart News’s Periscope livestream of the press conference. Jack Dorsey’s platform also then limited the Breitbart News official account, indicating that tweets containing links to multiple stories about the press conference violate the platform’s COVID-19 policies. GOLD? Buy, buy, buy! (The Craving Sutra)

Sheldon S., Dhr. Seven, Ashley Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly based on Ven. Thanissaro/Geoffrey DeGraff (translation), Tanha Sutra: "Discourse on Craving" (AN 4.199 PTS: A ii 211)

Invest without being swindled?

[On July 1st Forbes reported that] "Gold prices are soaring to the Moon. Here's Why." The following chart shows that the price of gold has had the longest quarterly run since the 2007 financial crisis. Gold is in a strong uptrend. The Craving Sutra

The golden hand that craves no gold
"Meditators, craving ensnares as it flows along, spreads out, catches hold, and smothers the world, entangling it like a knot, a tangled ball of thread, like matted reeds, so that one does not get beyond rebirth, beyond the planes of deprivation and misery, the unfortunate destinations of rebirth.

Heed well, and I shall speak."

"Yes, venerable sirs," they responded.

The Buddha then said, "What sort of craving ensnares as it flows along, spreads out, catches hold, and smothers the world, entangling it like a knot, a tangled ball of thread, like matted reeds, so that one does not get beyond rebirth, beyond the planes of deprivation and misery, the unfortunate destinations of rebirth?

There are 18 things evaluated by craving* that depend on what is internal and 18 that depend on what is external.
  • *Tanha-vicaritani, literally "things evaluated by craving," is the past participle. It is related to the noun vicara ("discursive thinking"), which is classified as a verbal formation, that is to say, a necessary precondition for speech (as in MN 44). A person free of craving is still able to verbalize but does not contemplate (vitakka) or ponder in these terms, which are foundational to our ordinary thought patterns.
"What are the 18 things evaluated by craving that depend on what is internal? [Clinging to the wrong view of self, one engages in faulty reasoning full of harmful assumptions:]
  1. "There being 'I am,'
  2. there comes to be 'I am here,'
  3. there comes to be 'I am like this'...
  4. 'I am otherwise'...
  5. 'I am bad'...
  6. 'I am good'...
  7. 'I might be'...
  8. 'I might be here'...
  9. 'I might be like this'...
  10. 'I might be otherwise'...
  11. 'May I be'...
  12. 'May I be here'...
  13. 'May I be like this'...
  14. 'May I be otherwise'...
  15. 'I will be'...
  16. 'I will be here'...
  17. 'I will be like this'...
  18. 'I will be otherwise.'
Here is about $12,000 in troy ounces.
"These are the 18 things evaluated by craving that depend on what is internal.

"What are the 18 things evaluated by craving that depend on what is external? [Clinging to a wrong view of self, one reasons:]
  1. There being 'I am because of this,'
  2. there comes to be 'I am here because of this,'
  3. there comes to be 'I am like this because of this'...
  4. 'I am otherwise because of this'...
  5. 'I am bad because of this'...
  6. 'I am good because of this'...
  7. 'I might be because of this'...
  8. 'I might be here because of this'...
  9. 'I might be like this because of this'...
  10. 'I might be otherwise because of this'...
  11. 'May I be because of this'...
  12. 'May I be here because of this'...
  13. 'May I be like this because of this'...
  14. 'May I be otherwise because of this'...
  15. 'I will be because of this'...
  16. 'I will be here because of this'...
  17. 'I will be like this because of this'...
  18. 'I will be otherwise because of this.'
Gold holds its value against fiat paper cash.
"These are the 18 things evaluated by craving that depend on what is external.

"There are, therefore, 18 things evaluated by craving that depend on what is internal and 18 that depend on what is external.

"Together they are called the 36 things evaluated by craving. So with 36 of them in the past, 36 of them in the future, and 36 of them in the present, there are 108 things evaluated by craving.

"This, meditators, is the craving that ensnares, that flows along, spreads out, catches hold, and smothers the world, entangling it like a tangle, a knotted ball of thread, like matted reeds that do not allow one to get beyond rebirth, beyond the planes of deprivation and misery, the unfortunate destinations."
