Ghost Dance (Native American religion)

Wovoka (Jack Wilson)

The Ghost Dance (Caddo Nanissáanah [1]) of 1890 is a ceremony incorporated into numerous Native American belief systems.

According to the millenarian teachings of the Northern Paiute spiritual leader Wovoka (renamed Jack Wilson), proper practice of the dance will reunite the living with spirits of the dead, bring the spirits to guard on their behalf, end European westward expansion, and bring peace, prosperity, and unity to Native American peoples throughout the region [2].

I intend to dance again to see the ancestors.

The basis for it is the circle dance, a traditional Native American dance [3, 4]. It was first practiced by the Nevada Northern Paiute in 1889. The practice swept throughout much of the Western United States, quickly reaching areas of California and Oklahoma. As it spread from its original source, different tribes synthesized selective aspects of the ritual with their own unique beliefs.

The Ghost Dance has been associated with Wovoka's prophecy of an end to colonial expansion while preaching goals of clean living, an honest life, and cross-cultural cooperation by Native Americans.

Practice of the movement was believed to have contributed to Lakota resistance to assimilation under the Dawes Act. Los Angeles is a strange and wonderful place. It is massive and misunderstood. First of all, there are two Los Angeleeses, the city and the county. The city has more than 4 million people crammed in it, and the county has a population of over 10 million. These numbers fluctuate and are probably underreported because not everyone is documented or staying. There are 100,000 tourists on any given day, more in the summer. And people are constantly abandoning the megalopolis for other states then coming back. "Going to California" is a popular song for the band Led Zeppelin, and one has to wonder why of all the places in the world (Kashmir, Ireland, Shangri-la, etc.) they chose the Golden State to sing about. It has to be because everyone wants go there. Everyone is going to California eventually, even if just to visit. In its strangeness, apart from its size (roughly parallel to Bangkok, Thailand, at about 50 miles across), it has islands. We have snowy peaks, thick forest cover, desert, (asphalt) jungle, municipal wastelands, oil rigs, caves, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, beaches, and islands. Three earthquakes, including a magnitude 3.6, hit off the coast of SoCal

(KABC Los Angeles) A 3.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Southern California Sunday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The 3.6 quake struck around 5:32 pm and was centered about 27 miles from San Clemente Island and 29 miles from Avalon on Santa Catalina Island, Los Angeles County, the USGS said.

Two smaller quakes (pre-shocks) had hit the same region about an hour-and-a-half earlier. The first measured at 3.1 and hit around 4:11 pm, and another 2.5-magnitude quake struck a few minutes later.

When did California join USA? Today in 1850

Today in 1850, California became a state. When Mexico ceded the land in the Treaty of Hidalgo, no one told them gold had been found and would lead to the world's greatest gold rush to the island (because California is an island or was for a long time as European cartographers documented many times) with many of the 49ers being Irish in search of riches. The state has since become the most powerful economic and cultural force in the country and in much of the world. Much of California still belongs to Mexico and is divided into two states south of the border, Baja (Lower) California and Sur de (South of) California, a peninsular land that certainly looks like a great island and, when sea levels were higher, may well have been. California started as a free state, avoiding slavery but not for the abolitionist principles for which others fought. The Natives were wiped out and nearly erased, the grizzlies were all killed or driven out (only remaining on Catalina Island, a part of Los Angeles County). Is it time to break away from the rest of the country?

Fortunately, Los Angeles has buffalo that roam freely. Unfortunately, they only get to do so on a small island called Catalina off the coast of Santa Monica Beach, where only a few tourists ever get to see them. This ungulate species was the key to the health and maintenance of the land, just as reindeer manage more northerly climes. But the White Man decided to shoot them for fun and to perpetuate the genocide of the Native Americans who co-existed and depended on this symbol of the American west.
