Buddhism in The Matrix goes deeper than most of us think (other than Wachowski Brothers). The Wachowskis built this film on Buddhist philosophy—but Neo (Keanu Reeves, who played the Buddha in Little Buddha) goes on a journey that reveals something most viewers miss: Taking the red pill isn'tenlightenment, it's just the beginning. This video explores what The Matrix gets RIGHT about Buddhism, what Neo gets WRONG about awakening, and why the ending is actually the most Buddhist part of the entire trilogy. HOW do we get out of this prison?
We are trapped in a prison of our own making. Realizing it does NOT free us. Letting go does. But how can we let go? We can't. It isn't an act of willpower. It's by seeing things as they are. Okay, okay, that makes sense! How are they? This is not a belief-system to believe. We must go in and see kalapas and cittas, particles and mind-moments, which means we must first cultivate samadhi (stillness, absorption) to purify and intensify the instrument of seeing (the mind). Then when we really know-and-see what is there, letting go happens by itself free of effort. The mind/heart lets go when it sees all things are marked by Three Universal Characteristics.
I was trying to read the Heart Sutra to chant it in Sanskrit. But it doesn't make any sense translated into English. At least it didn't until Wisdom Quarterly's Dharma editor explained it.* Now it's clear. Now I know why "enlightenment" eludes me. Now I know what to study and put into practice to know-and-see. Thanks, WQ!
one is called a noble disciple who is a stream-winner, no longer liable to ever fall into subhuman states of woe [1], assured of full and final enlightenment."
NOTE: 1.
The "stream-winner" (sotapanna) is sure to become fully enlightened (an arahant) within seven rebirths and will not be reborn more than seven more times, and such a person will never again be reborn in any state lower than the human plane.
the one "with seven rebirths at the utmost" (sattakkhattu-parama) ["one with only seven further rebirths at the utmost," is one of the three kinds of stream-winners (sotāpannas).
the one "passing from one noble family to another" (kolankola),
the one "germinating only once more" (eka-bījī, lit. "one seed" or perhaps "at most once more seeded").]
(1) "If a person, after the disappearance of the three lower fetters (personality-belief, skeptical doubt, attachment to rites and rituals), see samyojana), has entered the stream [that leads inevitably to nirvana], that person is no longer subject to any rebirth in the lower worlds [anywhere below the human plane], is firmly established, destined to reach full enlightenment. After having passed among celestial beings (deva) and human beings (manussya) only at most seven times more through the Round of Rebirths, one puts an end to all suffering. Such a person is called "one with seven rebirths at the utmost" (sattakkhattu-parama).
I continued to practice to make an end of all ill.
(2) "If a person, after the disappearance of the three fetters.... is destined to reach full enlightenment, that person, after having passed among noble families two or three times through the round of rebirths, makes an end of all suffering. Such a person is called "one passing from one noble family to another" (kolankola).
(3) "If a person, after the disappearance of the three fetters...is destined to full enlightenment, one, after having only once more returned to the human plane, makes an end of all suffering. Such a person is called "one germinating only once more" (eka-bījī).
7. This is an encouraging message for many! Compare it to the end of MN 22 and also the charming image of the newborn calf in MN 34. The Commentary (MA) to MN 22 says such people are termed "lesser stream-winners" (cula-sota-panna). This term is discussed in The Path of Purification (VM XIX, 27). [This term is more fully explained in The Path of Freedom (Vimuttimagga).] The stress laid here on the importance of faith (actually saddha, "confidence," "conviction," the trust sufficient to investigate that precedes personal verification) is interesting in view of later developments such as the Pure Land schools (e.g., Jodo-Shinshu or "Shin-Buddhism" in Japan).

Prana-yama(Sanskrit प्राणायाम, prāṇāyāma) is the yogic practice of controlling, retaining, balancing, and working the breath in yoga. It is described in Hindu texts such as the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita. In the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, it is described as one of the eight limbs of yoga ("union" with spirit, breath, the universe's energy). In classical yoga, what we call "the breath" is actually the life energy called prana(chi, qi, holy spirit, wind, pneuma, esoteric energy, Vayu-Vata).
In later Hatha Yoga texts, it means the complete suspension of breathing [which is something that happens in Buddhism's meditative absorptions (jhanas) four through eight]. Prana-yama practices in modern yoga done just as exercise, such as in Ashtanga (Vinyasa) Yoga, differ radically from those of the Hatha Yoga tradition, often using the breath in synchrony with movements. In the beginning, in the dreamtime, it might have been that Brahma (the creator god of the Vedas and Hinduism) uttered a word, a sound, an aspirated aum or OM. Or maybe it made this sentence: Let there be light. And that sound was Brahma, the supreme, the alpha and the OMega, the A and the alph'. That's not what happened in the Agganna Sutta, the Buddhist account of "Genesis," the discourse on beginnings, which begins with light. That's because that sutra only deals with life on the origin of life on Planet Earth, not the universe. Here Gaia.com looks into the sacred sound at the beginning of form or what is now called the study of cymatics:
A machine to 'see' sounds (resonant vibrations)?
What if we could suddenly "see" sounds?
Vibration underpins all matter in the Universe.
The CymaScope is the first scientific instrument that can provide an analog image of sound and vibration. The once invisible world of sound is revealed in a myriad of [sacred] geometric patterns. When the microscope and telescope were invented, they opened vistas into realms that were not even suspected to exist.
Sound has been invisible throughout history, except in graphic depictions of conventional acoustics instrumentation.
Now, with the development of the CymaScope instrument, the omnipresent, unexplored realms of sound and vibration are made visible for scientific study and artistic appreciation. (Source: CymaScope via sunnylanblog.wordpress.com)
If the great problem in life is clinging (upadana) to illusions -- such as things being able to satisfy/fulfill us, things being permanent, and things being personal -- then the great awakening to their true nature as suffering, impermanent, and impersonal, we suddenly are able to let go, internally renounce (nekkhamma), and awaken (bodhi). The great awakening to Truth sets us from and allows us to lay down the burden we have carried in this samsara, this wheel of life after life meeting with suffering in this form or that, in this plane or that, within this sphere or that. It is like breathing a sigh of relief with tears of joy that there is an escape, a freeing oneself from the thicket of views, and finding peace. That is one way to look at it. But it is much more joyful and blissful than Anand is letting on. Imagine years of imprisonment then being released. Imagine painful illness then getting well. Imagine being in a shadowy world or illusions and goblins then stepping into the light. Nirvana is like that.
How two years of advanced lucid dreaming changed my life (forever)
(Zach Highley) Aug. 1, 2025: What if there were the possibility of something else other than blackness during sleep? What if there were something like chatting with brilliant Einstein or, more importantly, discovering something about ourselves? Interacting with our subconscious? Discovering life’s purpose? Or eliminating nightmares forever? One day, one of my friends introduced me to lucid dreaming. She told me she controls her dreams, and I was amazed!

Dark, handsome, celibate Nikola Tesla
It is fascinating that there are extraterrestrial beings who care enough to look over at Earth from above and send psychic messages to those sensitive enough to pick up on them. Foremost of these was the great inventor Nikolai Tesla, who thanks to his mother had the latent ability to pick up such messages.
Through that family DNA lineage, he was sensitive to it. Beings from Venus or those living on a nearby planet, concerned that all of Earth's problems might be due to not knowing about free-energy (which we do know about but is not made public because of the disastrous effects it would have on our corporate economic system that sells polluting fuels and electric technology and keeps all the perpetual motion and free energy machines seeking patents in a locked vault so that claims can be made but no officially authorized proof).
Maria Orsic (Orsitch)
They reasoned that if they could make contact with one or more earthlings and showed how easy it was, all the problems here would end: war, famine, inequality... Tesla's main dream was establishing a Wi-Fi worldwide network of free electricity. Electrons are now sent around from main generation plants with a great deal of resistance. Whether AC or DC, there is degradation in the signal and loss of energy dissipating as heat or other forms before reaching city centers and "consumers." Tesla envisioned towers electrifying the ether or air (akasha) so that everyone could tap in. That was of no interest to capitalist backers suggesting they would provide the funding. The CIA undermined Tesla then took his revelations to find military applications to his discoveries. Where does that leave us? Right where we are, poor, full of war, and unequal.
What evidence is there that the Nazis ever got one of their schemes to fly?
Sumerians arrived here and then went back.
But at around the same time, there was a better but less well-known case of the same thing happening. Austrian Oracle Maria Orsic and her Vril Society or Gesellschaft of beautiful women (possibly an unearthly beauty) used their psychic powers to make contact with Aldebaran, a distant star system. ET beings there, communicating in an ancient defunct language, sent Orsic information (full blueprints) on how to build a UFO (vimana, "spaceship").
The society did not understand what the information was, but they made contact with Nazis in Germany, approaching a Gestapo member or similar high ups. The German officials, almost certainly not taking these supermodels seriously nevertheless wanted to talk to them, humor them, and keep them around.
So a Nazi officer at the restaurant/club took the blueprints and showed them to a professor (a linguist) at another table, who not only recognized them but felt he was the only one who could appreciate what he was being shown because he was an expert in the language they were in, at least a related language. What they were written in, which if memory serves was Middle Sumerian, was not available.
So the professor was desperate to know what museum or archeological site the Nazis had plundered to find such a treasure. The officer explained that that beautiful girl over there had written it. This, of course, was impossible. Even an academic (and this academic regarded himself as foremost in this field of study) could not have forged these, so rare was an understanding of this language, much less an untrained layperson. He was introduced, and Maria Orsic explained that she indeed had produced them but not by knowing what they were.
Rather, she had done so by channeling, explaining that her extraordinarily long hair for the time when a kind of bob was all the rage, had served as an antenna. Members of the Vril Society all had very, very long hair (though one photo shows one beauty caving in and adopting a fashionable bob). The Nazi officer cut to the chase and asked, given that it was a blueprint, was there enough information on it to build what it was. The academic said yes, and this launched the Nazis advantage and ability to win WW II.
Psychic goes cosmic with ETs
Of course, we are all taught that Hitler and the Nazis lost, but they won. They avoided prosecution, were allowed free passage out to Neuschwabenland (New Swabia, Antarctica) and Argentina, with a lot of migration to the Americas, not only the U.S. but a big pocket to Jalisco, Mexico. So many German descendants were already in the U.S. that it is said that it was not a given that this would be an English-speaking new country following the genocide of the Native population.
Did Hitler have secret help?
We might have been German-speaking. Whatever Germany is said to have given up or endured post-WWII, they are now and have for a long time been a financial powerhouse in Europe and the world. The arrangement for the transfer of power and agreements with ETs to the U.S. (NASA, CIA, and other post-Nazi or Neo-Nazi organizations in the U.S.) military-industrial complex was a successful transition.
Many Nazi scientists guilty of war crimes were brought over, protected from prosecution, and set up to help. In fact, the justification for this is that many countries were vying for their expertise. Where did missile technology and military superiority come from to aid the Germans?
A more important development than Nazi German UFOs was a UAP called Die Glocke ("The Bell"), which is stable time travel technology. The CIA could not let that fall into other hands. The term UAP is not only a psyop name change. It can actually refer to something fundamentally different than a flying object. USOs are submersibles. This newest invention travels on water, and we already have a similar air-vehicle that travels over level desert land on big fans. There is/was also the mysterious Thule Society, which seems to be the occult male arm of Vril.
Do Austrians remember Maria O?
It was the misuse of ET information, not by Tesla or Orsic but the funders, backers, and officials who were the only ones who could afford to build on an industrial scale. Even if Nazi officials promised the Vril Society that all uses of their channeled information would be peaceful and for the purpose of building a vimana to take them to that distant planet in Aldebaran, the technology was abused. The Vril Society took the journey and were seen no more. Edison was boosted, but Tesla (whose intuited information was so much more valuable) was largely forgotten until recently, even though he now channels from beyond and no one is paying overt attention to his newest revelations.
Tesla being channeled today
The Discovery Channel or similar older network once showed a man who built his own flying disk based on antigravity technology, which is easy to produce by counter-rotating magnets to produce lift. The prototype, a smaller scale proof of principle model, flew away. He was now working on a larger version if he could figure out how to steer it.
Another man built a super-vehicle based on the natural technology under scarab wings that allows the bumblebee-like bugs to fly and float with wings that seem to small for their bodies. A man recently "flew" a magic carpet for all to see by leaping off a cliff with a parachute. He glided down for a great distance, which shows up the fact that we do not know how ordinary flight works, yet it does. If it were "lift" on the wings, then how does a twin-engine Cessna flip over midflight to fly upside down at air shows?
We convened, a full house, in two rooms of Manly P. Hall's dream vision come to life -- a treasure store open to the public, the Philosophical Research Society's library, housing the combined wisdom of the ages and all the religions of the world. Even works on northern Native Americans next to an image of Japan's beloved Indian sage Bodhidharma are included, after passing an exquisite bronze walking Buddha at the entrance.
Candidate Dr. Cornel West
Seated in the second row was presidential candidate Dr. Cornel West because his Iranian-Persian wife, Annahita Mahdavi West, was scheduled to read from her book Dusty Relics (Marymount Institute Press).
There was another event in the auditorium, and the gift shop was open for buying books and other items. The main court is a lovely place to think under moonlit skies just yards from Griffith Park. PRS has a prime location on Los Feliz ("The Contented") Boulevard. The library was filled and opened to the public because its founder, Hall, wanted the people of the world to have a place for their "intuitive perusal" of its volumes on all the wisdom traditions of the world. The world may not use it, but Angelenos can. (I used to drive by ever since I learned to drive and wonder what the place could be, a giant think tank where a society of philosophers gathered to research ideas and occult secrets, mysteries, and paths to enlightenment. No one ever said it was open to the public before Mandy Kahn began her residency there. Even Lisa Garr (The Aware Show KPFK, Coast to Coast AM iheart.com, Gaia TV, Hey House Publishers), when she invited me to learn animal communication with a gifted psychic and author, didn't say, "Oh, yeah, come back for the library and to hang around philosophizing. I had probably outgrown that phase by then.
Mandy Kahn took to the podium, thanked the capacity crowd (after having thanked Wisdom Quarterly: American Buddhist Journal and the various Dharma Buddhist Meditation Meetups around the county for helping fill the seats).
She welcomed award winning Pepperdine University Prof. of English Kate Bolton Bonnici Esq., who read her poetic take on ancient accounts of women, the "witches of Essex," from pamphlets written in the 1600s now made available in digitized form. These were written by men in an age when women had nearly no voice, no means of expressing themselves other than through biased men whose biased accounts fill these early tabloids. Is it any wonder we suffered the Salem witch trials? Such atrocities had been happening in Christian England for centuries. She put the finishing touch on her dramatic reading, or what seemed like a dramatic reading because the lights were turned down, and the lamp on the podium shot up to give the flashlight-under-the-face next to a roaring campfire effect when its ghost story time: the historical figure Elizabeth Francis was an accused witch with a cat (a familiar) who could grant wishes. What men and society would not grant a gal, she had to gather herself from midwives and wise and cunning women who stood as allies against an old patriarchy. Good thing we do not have such problems nowadays, now that the Academy has recognized Barbieas the greatest film of our time and Greta Gerwig as the... What, Oppy won? Hmm. Female poetry is needed more than ever. Prof. Bonnici continued with Scottish fairy beliefs in a piece that referenced Sir Thomas Moore's Utopia then the British witch trial of Elizabeth Southerns when a woman might "bleed out" her problems, though she died of old age in a castle in custody before her trial ever began. The reading was topped off with a firsthand account of a grandmother trying to learn the computer. One can guess how that turned out.
Another introduction, another professor. He was meditative reading a book-length piece that talked about Reno as was quickly off the stage, a marvelous albeit staid voice that surprisingly used the f-word a bit much. Everyone else kept it clean (until for the headliner's closing piece, phallic cucumbers and honeymoon activities were underscored with subtle intimations of salad eating. No children were harmed in the declaiming of this verse as none were present).
Some words from a bio and a man with perhaps a tiny Oedipal complex and large glasses started to read from a book. His contribution to the night's poetry seemed like an impromptu letter to an ex, who one would think was not happy to receive it. But all literary appreciation is subjective, and one cup of tea does not sate all sippers. I am also no fan of Stephen King. But, go figure, most people are. Next.
Co-host Jane McCarthy stood to read, but now every reader was standing too much to the right, perhaps to look to the left into the warm, inviting pools of Kahn's eyes in the front row as she sat at her mother's side. The upshot of this shift is that the light behind them acted as a floodlight in our faces and cameras were of no use countering the glare. McCarthy gave an ode to Hall and his text Wisdom of the Ages then read, not from a book, but a flat viscose sheet of pulp. It was not a phone but some oldfangled invention in two dimensions.
With practice, achieve lucidity in dreaming. Astral travel and merge with others.
Then she introduced Mandy Kahn, who with three books of poetry to her credit will soon be reading at the Getty Center, the Los Angeles TimesFestival of Books (USC), Bolton Hall (for the Village Poets of Sunland-Tujunga), following previous appearances on the BBC and elsewhere. Kahn began by explaining that as a child of 4 or 5, growing up in Los Angeles, she spontaneously taught herself lucid dreaming (the ability to wake up in a dream by realizing one is in a dream and suddenly being free to do anything: have uncombed hair, dress comfortably, and bet on longshots). She did not have a word for it, but her newfound ability led to a remarkable discovery: When one leaves the body, it is possible to meet another disembodied being and merge with that individual. This practice gave rise to her poem "The Geyser," referencing the sweet honeysuckle-like nectar produced by such merging. Most of us have to search for it in sexual union with bodies, but that's only a pale imitation of the experience of merging and blending, overlapping and intertwining with someone on the astral or some such liminal state provided by the dream realm. This, she explained, is why she goes about life in a porous manner as if separated from others and reality by only a thin veil, believing in ideals like world peace. Hear her every Wednesday at 6:00 pm on Zoom saying so (free) under the auspices of PRS. She read selections from her new book, out in hardback this month, Holy Doors. It seems her enchanted childhood included gambling when, at age 6, she developed a penchant for "longshots." Sure, one will lose most of the time, but when one's ship comes in, there's nothing like folding and smelling each crisp bill. Her siblings scolded her for such foolish conduct. They're longshots for a reason, but to Mandy. She loves to bet on them and this, perhaps, is why the UC Berkeley graduate has made a successful career of being a poet, peace activist, literary event organizer, and lucid dreamer. Either that or she has a trust fund. Her advice to writers, dreamers, and truth seekers? "When we let our thinking go, we sink into what we know, and let things flow." She "leans into precision not perfection."
Teaching us about the musician Charles Ives, a polytonal, polyrhythmic musician ahead of his time, rather than seek acceptance by conforming, simply refused to share his . But he made music every day nonetheless. And that style eventually came into vogue. We might follow his example. Whether we do or whether we don't, her final piece came not from the book but was pulled from the latest headlines. Don't let Elon Musk's Neuralink technology anywhere inside your body. This beloved workhorse has grown, healed bone, knitted DNA, and brought us right where we are with experimental cyborg technology. Let's keep it that way and resist the lure of trying to improve something we are nowhere close to even beginning to understand -- these amazing brains wrapped in these wondrous bodies. It was unambiguously titled "Poem Against Implanting Technology Into Yourself. Stay organic. That is, choose the body. "What you do not, cannot understand, do not change." Someone in the middle of the hall broke protocol and loudly cheered her on. What would we do without our artists to remind us to stay true to ourselves?
She introduced Iranian born exile Annahita Mahdavi West, whom one could not be blamed in thinking was named Anahata Mahadevi East, were she originally from India. Future U.S. President Cornel West began to roll on his phone-camera duties.
She confessed to being a lot like Charles Ives when she began writing. After all, she explained, everyone in Iran is a poet. Her father was, her mother was, her sister...so what was the sense in showing everyone? Now with Dusty Relics in hand, she was ready to shake them off and show them to the world, personal poems of exile, war, grief, sweetness in the mundane and familiar. Just as Kahn remembered suckling honeysuckle flowers for half a drop of "golden sweetness," West recalled the sweet moments amid the bitter then welcomed her friend and fellow Iranian/Persian poet Sholeh Wolpé:
Sholeh Wolpe, who's famous enough to have her own Wiki page and more than a dozen books to her credit, intermingling lyricism and prose narrative.
Wolpe was the surprise of the night, laying down an example that, if retro-causality could be accessed at will, would have made for a much more moving show. She talked, she read, she waved her arm. She produced laughs from the crowd and oohs and ahhs. She translates the greats as well, but there was no time to read that kind of work tonight. Still, the audience was assured, go home and read The Conference of the Birds by Sufi mystic Attar and be guaranteed a life altering experience.
She read from her book, Abacus of Loss, a memoir partially in Farsi that is in no way chronological because neither is memory, reading from the "This Coffin" section of the book. She left us with one lasting impression, a line she uttered as she was handed the mic by West: "Home," she said, "is a missing tooth. The tongue reaches for hardness, finds only absence." That was the impression but, in fact, she left us with a story of discovering sex with a fellow virgin and the advice she received, the remembrance of it, and its similarity to eating a durian, which is the fruit with the most extraordinary taste. But, being shamed for not knowing what she was doing ahead of time, which would have been good to know, she had to purge.
Mandy Kahn closed the show with final comments, alerting us that this poetry series is ongoing, the last Thursday of every month at PRS in Hollywood. The next show is April 25, 2024.
