How the world comes to be (sutra)

Bhikkhu Bodhi (trans.), Ariya-sāvaka Sutta ["Enlightened Hearers Discourse"], Connected Discourses on Causation (SN 12.49), "The Noble Disciple (1)" edited by Dhr. Seven, Ananda (Dharma Buddhist Meditation), Wisdom Quarterly; Ven. Nyanatiloka, Buddhist Dictionary: Manual of Buddhist Terms

This is the Ariya (enlightened) sāvaka ("hearer") discourse. A sāvaka is a hearer or "learner," (sekha), a "disciple" of the Buddha. In a restricted sense (as ariya-sāvaka or "noble disciple")  it only refers to the eight kinds of enlightened disciples (ariya-puggala).

Sāvaka-bodhi or "hearer's enlightenment" designates the awakening to ultimate truth of a disciple of a buddha, as distinguished from the enlightenment of an independent nonteaching buddha (pacceka-buddha) or a supremely-enlightened teacher (sammā-sambuddha).

(SC 1) Thus have I heard. At Savatthī (sn.ii.78). “Meditators, an instructed enlightened (noble, ariyan) disciple does not think:
  • ‘When what exists does what come to be?
  • ‘With the arising of what does what arise?
  • ‘When what exists do volitional formations come to be?
  • ‘When what exists does consciousness come to be?
  • ‘When what exists does name-and-form come to be? …
  • ‘When what exists does aging-and-death come to be?’
(SC 2) “Rather, meditators, the instructed enlightened disciple has direct knowledge about this independent of all others:
  • ‘When this exists, that comes to be’;
  • ‘with the arising of this, that arises.’
  • ‘When there is ignorance, volitional formations come to be.’
  • ‘When there are volitional formations, consciousness comes to be.’
  • ‘When there is consciousness, name-and-form comes to be….’
  • ‘When there is rebirth, aging-and-death comes to be.’
"One understands thus: ‘In such a way, the world originates.’

(SC 3) “Meditators, an instructed enlightened disciple does not think:
  • ‘When what does not exist does what not come to be?’
  • ‘With the cessation of what does what cease?’
  • ‘When what does not exist do volitional formations not come to be?’
  • ‘When what does not exist does consciousness not come to be?’
  • ‘When what does not exist does name-and-form not come to be?’ …
  • ‘When what does not exist does aging-and-death not come to be?’”
(SC 4) “Rather, meditators, the instructed enlightened disciple has direct knowledge about this independent of all others:
  • ‘When this does not exist, that does not come to be’;
  • ‘with the cessation of this, that ceases.’
  • ‘When there is no ignorance, volitional formations do not come to be.’
  • ‘When there are no volitional formations, consciousness does not come to be.’
  • ‘When there is no consciousness, name-and-form does not come to be.’…
  • ‘When there is no rebirth, aging-and-death does not come to be.’
"One understands thus: ‘In such a way the world ceases.’ (sn.ii.79)

(SC 5) “Meditators, when an enlightened disciple thus understands as they really are the origin and the passing away of the world, that disciple is then called an enlightened disciple
  • who is accomplished in [right] view,
  • accomplished in [knowledge-and-] vision,
  • who has arrived at this true Dharma,
  • who sees this true Dharma,
  • who possesses a trainee’s knowledge,
  • a trainee’s true knowledge,
  • who has entered the stream of the Dharma,
  • a ‘noble one’ with penetrative wisdom,
  • one who stands squarely before the door to the Deathless (nirvana).” Source

April Fools Day PRANKS (comedy)

"It's all fake news. We have to censor it!"
First of all, don't do it. Second, if you ignore this warning, at least do it right; plan ahead, no amateurs. Third, study. What is the origin of this day?

Let us go to the font of all-knowing wisdom for an answer: April Fools' Day is celebrated every year on April 1st by playing practical jokes and spreading hoaxes. The jokes and their victims are called April fools. [April is the cruellest month.]

Don't do me like that!

Remember, turnabout is fair play

"Tell me this is a joke!" Homer
People playing April Fool jokes expose their prank by shouting, "April Fool!" at the end of it.

Some newspapers, magazines, and other published media report fake stories (more than usual, you know, Onion-style satire), which are usually explained the next day or below the news section in small letters.

Although popular since the 19th century, the day is not a public holiday in any country. Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales (1392) contains the first recorded association between April 1st and foolishness. More

The Shifting Meaning of "Happiness" (video)

Cassie Mogilner (U Penn); Sepandar D. Kamvar and Jennifer Aaker (Stanford)
() Prof. Mogilner research shows that happiness is tied to temporal (time) focus as part of the 2011 BizTalks: "Five Wharton Professors - Five Game-Changing Ideas."

An examination of emotions reported on 12 million personal [and Buddhist] blogs along with a series of surveys and laboratory experiments shows that the meaning of happiness is not fixed; instead, it systematically shifts over the course of one’s lifetime. Whereas younger people are more likely to associate happiness with excitement, as they get older, they become more likely to associate happiness with peacefulness. This change appears to be driven by a redirection of attention from the future to the present as people age. The dynamic of what happiness means has broad implications, from purchasing behavior to ways to increase one’s happiness.

Report: "Mind control" on U.S. Senators

Pauline Jelinek and Lolita C. Baldor (AP), Feb. 24, 2011

The Bush-Cheney-Obama administration's pretext for wars is blind patriotism.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan is ordering an investigation into charges that an army unit trained in psychological operations [PsyOps] was improperly told to manipulate American senators. The reason? To get more money and troops for the war [just as the military did during US "conflicts" in Central America and Vietnam, according to former CIA station-chief-turned-whistleblower Philip Agee].

A senator allegedly targeted said Thursday that he's confident there will be a review of the facts, but played down the idea that he was manipulated.

Carefully orchestrated manipulation of media makes us all victims of US war (glossynews.com).

The staff of Lt. Gen. William Caldwell, head of the effort to train Afghan security forces, ordered the information operations unit to compile profiles, voting records, and other information on visiting lawmakers to leverage in a campaign to get more assistance, said a story Thursday on Rolling Stone's website.

It says the campaign also improperly targeted the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Mike Mullen, and others. Caldwell's office denied that the command used information operations cell to influence distinguished visitors. More>>

U.S. probes if senators targeted by Afghan psy-ops unit
(Reuters) The military said on today it will investigate accusations that a psychological operations unit was used in Afghanistan to try to persuade visiting senators to increase war funding. The accusations... quot[ed] the leader of the [PsyOps] Army unit, Lieutenant Colonel Michael Holmes, who objected to what he saw as an illegal use of his team's skills on American citizens.

Deprogramming: Political and Religious Mind Control
"Deprogramming" refers to actions that attempt to force a person to abandon allegiance to a religious or political group. Methods and practices typically involve violent kidnapping and coercion. Ted Patrick, one of the pioneers of deprogramming, used a confrontational method: “When you deprogram people, you force them to think… But I keep them off balance and this forces them to begin questioning, to open their minds. When the mind gets to a certain point, they can see through all the lies that they’ve been programmed to believe. They realize that they’ve been duped and they come out of it. Their minds start working again.” More>>

Sex studies: What Women Want (video)

Seven, UCLA & Chien Chi Liu, UC Berkeley (Wisdom Quarterly)

VIDEO: The Only Honest College Ad (collegehumor.com)

"Women have many faults -- many, many faults -- whereas we men have only two: everything we say and everything we do."

What men want may be no clearer to women than what women want. But that's not likely to change anytime soon. At least not until more straight women take an interest in graduate school and research. (Until then, here's a hint: Read our lips; we men are remarkably literal, so reading between the lines often makes it easier to miss the lines themselves).

Any subordinated social class -- whether discriminated against based on gender or skin color, age or wealth, beauty or personality, education or manners -- will be very aware of implicit information that a dominant group is safe being blind to. It's not "women's intuition" so much as it is a learned ability: Gays, who are not women, have stronger "intuition" because they are more intensely discriminated against.

"What women want" generates a great deal of scientific interest. Why? There is a surplus of nerdy men in graduate programs who haven't got a clue. Of course, women now surpass men throughout academia, but it may still be a few years before the social research reaches parity.
Women more attracted to men whose feelings are unclear
Deborah Huso (Aolhealth.com, Feb. 8, 2011)
"Play hard to get" and "less is more" may actually be the best pieces of advice when it comes to relationships between men and women. New findings, published in Psychological Science, reveal that women are more attracted to men when they have no idea what their feelings are.

VIDEO: "March of Shame"

Dr. Erin R. Whitchurch and Timothy D. Wilson of the University of Virgina and Daniel T. Gilbert of Harvard University examined the reaction of 47 female UVA undergraduates. The subjects believed they were involved in an experiment to assess whether Facebook could work as an online dating site.

Researchers told the women that male students from two other universities viewed their profiles and rated them along with 15 to 20 other female profiles. The researchers also presented them with four male Facebook profiles -- profiles the women believed to be real but were actually fictitious.

The first group of women was told the four men gave them a high rating. The second group was told the four men rated them "average." A third group was shown profiles of four men but were not told which ones rated them high or average.

Not surprisingly, women were more attracted to the men who gave them high ratings compared to the men who rated them average. But it was the men whose ratings they didn't know that the women found most attractive. More>>

What do Dreams do?

(WQ) Dreams allow the mind to decom-press, to unwind, to resist nothing. It is for this reason that premonitions and intuitions may break through. Dreams are met with most frequently in Buddhist texts as a means of unscrambling symbols. Our cultural point of view has a great deal to do with the Greek view, which itself was heavily influenced by ancient Indian thinking on the subject.

Whether it's a vague vision or full REM surround sound technicolor dreaming, what we remember must have as much to do with the significance we place on what we experience. As attention goes, energy flows. This also works in reverse: to get energy to flow to one's meditation practice or insight or object of concentration...give it more attention. And remember not to neglect those eight hours or more of laying in silence with eyes closed and the lights off. It's called actual "sleep."

A Dream Interpretation: Tuneups for the Brain
New York Times (Health/Mind)
What if the primary purpose of dreaming isn’t psychological at all? In a paper published last month in the journal Nature Reviews Neuroscience, Dr. J. Allan Hobson, a psychiatrist and longtime sleep researcher at Harvard, argues that the main function of rapid-eye-movement sleep, or REM, when most dreaming occurs, is physiological. The brain is warming its circuits, anticipating the sights and sounds and emotions of waking. More>>

Marijuana & Meditation: Spiritual benefits?

Because marijuana is the second most commonly smoked substance in our society after tobacco, the answer to the question [Is it harmful?] is not only relevant, but of vital importance. Most of us are familiar with the pulmonary consequences of smoking cigarettes: COPD and lung cancer are among the most prevalent, accounting for nearly 300,000 deaths annually in the US alone. But for those who regularly smoke marijuana, are the consequences comparable? More>>

Marijuana use can have physical, psychological, spiritual benefits
Joan M. Bello (benefitsofmarijuana.com)
The physical benefits of marijuana are far-reaching, widespread, and long-term. Because of the way marijuana impacts the autonomic nervous system, which expands the breath and relaxes the body, its potential for health and healing are enormous. And they have been completely unrealized by Western medicine. The following passages are excerpted from The Benefits of Marijuana: Physical, Psychological, & Spiritual...
  • Police play waiting game on pot issue: New city ordinance is needed for widespread crackdown. While the District Attorney wants to charge ahead with a get-tough campaign against medical marijuana dispensaries, Los Angeles police said they are waiting for a definitive city policy regulating the businesses before stepping up their efforts against rogue operators. "All of us want to do something to make sure there are controls. I certainly never envisioned Los Angeles having more than 800 clinics. But I think the direction he is going is too far to try to eliminate all medical marijuana. It is clear they are out of hand, but the city is trying to deal with it."
SPIRITUAL BENEFITS?
That which enlivens is understood as the SPIRIT. In these times of secular values, when the life force is not recognized as being an expression of the holy, when in fact, the notion of a plane of existence beyond the material is not acknowledged, the search for meaning nevertheless perseveres.
Today, in these darkest of times, hundreds of millions who pursue the journey inward to the universal core values, find that marijuana facilitates the search. As a religious sacrament, intuitively recognized by all for whom the sacred beckons, marijuana has been employed for thousands of years, crossing all geographical and ethnic barriers. Marijuana not only balances the body and enhances our mental processes, it can also help (some of) us to perceive the abiding reality by raising our consciousness.

The following are excerpts from The Benefits of Marijuana. Meditation is the ultimate tool for self-knowledge. In the East, marijuana has been used to facilitate the process for millennia (pg. 47). The uncovering of inner confusion, so prominent with marijuana, is conspicuously absent with depressants. As the overall benefits of insightfulness obtained from its use lead to a greater freedom, marijuana is shunned by individuals who need a status quo in the personality or social position.

Sigmund Freud developed and expounded the understanding that we mechanically base our actions on programs devised throughout life, and many esoteric schools, ancient and modern, have taught the same. Being aware of these programs is very difficult since ordinary consciousness has within it the conspiracy to keep the mind comfortable and free of conflict This operates collectively as well as individually.

Whenever confronted, this usual state of mind automatically assumes a defensive posture by relying on distorted rationalizations, which are evident in a repressive and intolerant social order. By contrast, the open and aware consciousness often leads to spiritual realizations, irrelevant in mainstream thinking. In today’s world, this understanding is uncommon.

Higher morals and ethics, as propounded by organized religions, are agreed upon by the masses, especially during church attendance, but are otherwise too difficult to maintain when personal survival is at stake. Universal spiritual values, so often released with marijuana, can break down the conditioned defensive mentality (pg. 57). More>>

Life in Buddhist Hell(s)

(About.com) The Hell Realm is depicted as a place partly of fire and partly of ice. In the fiery part of the realm, hell beings (narakas) are subjected to pain and torment. In the icy part, they are frozen.

Interpreted psychologically, hell beings are recognized by their acute aggression. Fiery hell beings are angry and abusive, and they drive away anyone who would befriend or love them. Icy hell beings shove others away with their unfeeling coldness. In the torment of their isolation, their aggression increasingly turns inward, and they become self-destructive. More>>
.
In fact, the idea that there are only six realms in Buddhist cosmology is a gross over simplification. The Buddha outlined 31 Planes of Existence. But this, too, is a simple outline. A closer examination of any of these general planes reveals that there are indeed many more worlds and layers within them.
.
The "Animal Realm," for example, has countless species and undersea, underground niches few people have any idea about. Similarly, the Realm of Hungry Ghosts (petas, pretas) is very diverse. The majority of planes are inhabited by devas (light beings). But the majority of beings are packed in lower realms. The hells differ, just as the celestial worlds do, according to the karma that effected rebirth there. Like the Human Realm, there are almost as many worlds as individuals to experience them. No realm is permanent but can last so long as to feel eternal.
