Pyramid Review: Exploring Mexican sites

(Pyramid Review) Yaxchilan: The most inaccessible archeological site in Mexico, Jan. 29, 2026

Yaxchilan necropolis ruins (Wikipedia)
Yaxchilan
(yacht-chee-lan) is an ancient Maya city located on the bank of the Usumacinta River in the southern state of Chiapas, Mexico, near Guatemala (named after the Buddha Gautama plus the word mala or religious beads*). In the Late Classic Period, Yaxchilan was one of the most powerful Maya states along the course of the Usumacinta River, with Piedras Negras ("Black Rocks") as its major rival [1]. Architectural styles in subordinate sites in the Usumacinta region demonstrate clear differences that mark a clear boundary between the two kingdoms [1]. More: Yaxchilan, Mexico

SUTRA: The Danger of Waves (AN 4.122)

  • Surf the Seine River by the Eiffel Tower, Paris
Surfers, is there any greater danger than waves? Yes, according to the Buddha, there are crocs, whirlpools, and sharks, too. He recognized these dangers as symbolic for a monastic, a Buddhist monk or nun who leaves the low life of the ordinary uninstructed worldling for the high life of the path and precepts, wandering asceticism he used in his awakening to the complete freedom of nirvana. There are dangers to anyone who would escape the simulation, this samsara, the Wheel of Life, Death, and thus far unbounded suffering.
  • Olympic Surfing: Paris 2024 event guide, athletes, how to watch, daily schedule | NBC Olympics
Numerical Discourses (AN 4.122, 13. Fears), "The Danger of Waves")

ALERT: Big surf good, tsunami bad (Japan).
“Meditators, anyone who enters the water should anticipate [these] four dangers. What are the four? The dangers of waves, crocodiles, whirlpools, and sharks.

“These are the four dangers that anyone who enters the water should anticipate.

“In the same way, a person gone forth from the lay life to the left home life in this teaching and training (Dhamma-Vinaya) should anticipate four dangers. What are the four? The dangers of waves, crocodiles, whirlpools, and sharks.

What leviathans or nagas roam the seas?
“What, meditators, is the danger of waves? It is when a person has gone forth out of confidence [saddhafaith in the enlightenment of the Buddha, the enlightening power of the Dharma, and the enlightenment of disciples in the Noble Sangha] from the lay life to the left home life, thinking:

“‘I’m swamped [flooded, overtaken, overwhelmed] by rebirth, old age, and death, by sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. I am swamped by disappointment [dukkhaunsatisfactoriness, ill, woe, suffering, mired in it].

“I hope I can find an [escape, a way out, an] end to this entire mass of suffering.’

The waves inside our heads: tsunamis
“When such a person has gone forth, one’s spiritual companions advise and instruct one: ‘Go out like this, and come back like that. Look ahead like this, and to the side like that. Contract the limbs like this, and extend them like that. This is how to wear the cloak, alms bowl, and monastic robes.’

“Such a person thinks, ‘Formerly, as a lay person, I advised and instructed others. Now these monastics — who I might think were my own children or grandchildren — imagine they can advise and instruct me!’ Angry and upset, one quits the training and returns to the lower life [of a layperson]. This is called a monastic who rejects the training and returns to a lesser life for fear of the danger of waves. ‘Danger of waves’ is a term for anger and distress. This is called the danger of waves.

Crocodilian gharials with gaping mouths await.
“What, meditators, is the danger of crocodiles? It is when a person has gone forth out of confidence from the lay life to the left home life… When one has gone forth, that person’s spiritual companions advise and instruct: ‘Eat, consume, drink, and taste these things, but not those. Eat what is allowable, but not what is disallowed. Eat at the right time [between dawn and noon], but not at the wrong time.’

“One thinks, ‘Formerly, as a layperson, I used to eat, consume, drink, and taste what I wanted, not what I did not want. I ate and drank both allowable and disallowed things, at the right time and the wrong time. These faithful householders give me delicious fresh and cooked food at the wrong time of day. But these other monastics imagine they can gag my mouth!’ Angry and upset, one quits the training and returns to the lower life. This is called a monastic who rejects the training and returns to a lower life for fear of the danger of crocodiles. ‘Danger of crocodiles’ is a term for gluttony. This is called the danger of crocodiles.

Be careful or be sucked in insidiously.
“What, meditators, is the danger of whirlpools? It is when a person has gone forth out of confidence from the lay life to the left home life… When one has gone forth, one puts on robes in the morning and, taking alms bowl and cloak, enters a village or town for alms without guarding body, speech, and mind, without first establishing mindfulness, without restraining the sense faculties.

“There one sees householders or children amusing themselves, supplied and provided with the five kinds of sense strands of pleasure. One thinks, ‘Formerly, as a layperson, I amused myself, supplied and provided with the five sense strands of pleasure. And it is true that my family is wealthy. I can both enjoy my wealth and make merit. Why do I not quit the training and return to the lower life so I can enjoy my wealth and make merit?’

“One quits the training and returns to the lower life. This is called a monastic who rejects the training and returns to the lower life for fear of the danger of whirlpools. ‘Danger of whirlpools’ is a term for the five sense strands of pleasure. This is called the danger of whirlpools.

Sharks represent the sex we find attractive.
“What, meditators, is the danger of sharks? It is when a person has gone forth out of confidence from the lay life to the left-home life…

“When one has gone forth, one puts on robes in the morning and, taking alms bowl and cloak, enters a village or town for alms without guarding body, speech, and mind, without establishing mindfulness, and without restraining the sense faculties.

Get back! Get away! I'm leading a pure life!
“There one sees a female scantily clad, with revealing clothes. Lust infects his mind, so he quits the training and returns to the lower life. This is called a monastic who rejects the training and returns to a lower life because one is afraid of the danger of sharks. ‘Danger of sharks’ is a term for [objects of lust, whether females or males, from the point of view of monks and nuns]. This is called the danger of sharks.

“These are the four dangers that a person gone forth from the lay life to the left home life in this teaching and training (Doctrine and Discipline) should anticipate.”

Who's dumber, Biden or Trump? (comedy)

Jimmy Kimmel brings on the 2024 Spelling Bee winner to do battle

Trump rants about sharks, drug addict Hunter Biden found guilty, Jimmy upsets Fox News

Hey, Biden body-double, you're alright.
(Jimmy Kimmel Live) June 11, 2024: The high profile trial of Pres. Biden's son Hunter Biden ended badly for him as he was found guilty on all three counts, the Bidens hosted a party at the White House in honor of Juneteenth [an important day in American history and the end of chattel slavery and the introduction of the now common practice of wage slavery], Donald Trump had a virtual meeting with his probation officer, the Fox News crowd is upset that Kimmel is hosting an interview with Presidents Biden and Obama during a fundraiser here in Los Angeles, Oprah's tool Dr. Phil McGraw delicately interviewed Trump and mentioned a very familiar name (James Kimmel), Fibberace (fibbing Trump as a fibbing Liberace) was in Vegas this weekend where he said many incomprehensible things in the sun, including a diatribe about shark attacks and how a sinking boat should electrocute them but somehow doesn't when it sinks, but, hey, have you noticed all the shark attacks lately? Ugh, what was I saying? I know exactly what I'm saying. I don't have a script, and my teleprompters rarely work, so I'm just winging it (betcha you could never tell), which made Kimmel’s crew think, Why not give the little ones a treat with an all-Trump rendition of “Baby Shark”? #Kimmel

Who’s worse, Biden or Trump? Vote evil

Trump meets with probation officer after bizarre rally rant about sharks: A Closer Look

(Late Night with Seth Meyers) June 10, 2024: Meyers takes a closer look at Trump meeting with a probation officer after holding his first large rally since his guilty verdict, where he screamed about teleprompters, batteries and sharks.

(Steve Forbes) Biden have to pull out before race due to being too feeble

It's time to choose again: Vote Tweedledee?
Anyone who votes "the lesser evil" is purposely voting for evil. Happy birthday, Don Juan Trump, 78.

Before he is sent to prison or spared to get a government job in the White House, Trump will be 78 on June 14th. Seriously senile Biden is 81 but so much older.

Say what anyone wants about how dumb Trump is as a dishonest human being, at least he tells the truth sometimes, not knowing any better or not caring about anything but advancing and promoting himself.

He says what the powers-that-be do not want anyone to say out loud about how we spy on others or how bribes (tax deductible donations) influence politics. He knows the system because he, by his own admission, uses the system, and now that system is mad enough at him to impeach, impeach, convict, and possibly imprison him, if only to keep him out of the next election.

Get me Steve Bannon on the pipe or the vent!
Another Trump presidency is not the worst thing that could happen -- so long as it is carried out from Cell Block 6 at Riker's Island or a federal warehouse for wayward felons, a country club of minimum-security detention. Why?

Body-doubles, demons, suits?
He's not likely to start any new wars like all the other presidents do and have done, with perhaps the sole exception being hospice-bound Jimmy Carter.

Biden is a buffoon and, worse, a tool. Who or what is possessing him? When he freezes up as he did yesterday, it may be dementia and Parkinson's kicking in, but it has always seemed to be glitches in his reptilian, draconian, or demonic overlord's possession.

One would think that they know how to enter, exit, and manipulate him after half a century of doing so but, apparently, he is all the worse for wear for having so many walk ins occupy his physical body.

Unfortunately, there is more than one body-double, and it is apparent when the others are on duty. They do not act too out of character, preferring to hew closely to their scripts and trained mannerisms.

Biden has no body doubles, except Mr. Rodgers.
Vote Jill Stein, vote RFK Jr., vote Andrew D. Basiago, or vote Cornel West. Vote anyone but Pervy Uncle the geriatric white male candidate. As bad as Trump is -- and he is shamefully, woefully inept in almost all regards, a humiliating embarrassment to the country -- he's the closest thing we have to a peace candidate.

He's a belligerent, bombastic, buffoonish clown, who will pick terrible judges and select hollowed out shells of people for cabinet positions, but that would seem to be an improvement over what we have in Genocide Joe.

Boy Buddha found on Australian beach

The baby boy Buddha (actually Bodhisattva) being ceremonially bathed on Vesak

Boy Buddha on Bimaran
What is a baby boy Buddha? It should not be confused with the Buddha Boy (
Ram Bahadur Bomjon) now steeped in the quagmire of controversy. It is a figurine, usually ceramic and golden, of Prince Siddhartha Gautama just after he was born, raising his finger, speaking a declaration of his impending great enlightenment and final rebirth, and taking seven steps as the earth quakes, surrounded by devas and his mother's female attendants. It is used in a popular bathing ceremony usually performed during Mahayana Buddha Day and Theravada Vesak celebrations.

[Buy a metal detector, and hit the beach. There's no telling what treasures abound.] In 2018, Leon Dechamps and Shayne Thomson visited Shark Bay's coast in Australia.

Equipped with a metal detector, they serendipitously discovered a small Buddha figure, oblivious to the fact that they had unearthed a genuine treasure.

Following five years and numerous expert analyses, it was determined that the Buddha figure hailing from the beach of the Indian Ocean has its origins in China from the Ming Dynasty period.

The petite Buddha statue made from bronze dates most likely back to the 15th century. A specialist in Asian art validated that the item could fetch a price of up to $100,000.

"I was astounded when I discovered it was from the Ming Dynasty. This makes it the oldest Chinese artifact in Australian history," Dechamps stated on the Antiques Roadshow program.
Baby Buddha (Bodhisattva) being bathed
  • Around the Buddhist world (such as Maui, Hawaii, USA) the community celebrates Vesak Day. Vesak celebrates the birthday, enlightenment day, and final nirvana day of the Buddha (Shakyamuni), all three events having happened on the full moon of the ancient Indian month of Vaisakha. In addition to guided sitting meditation and Dharma talks, there is usually a bathing ceremony of the baby Buddha and a joyful vegetarian meal. In the Chinese Mahayana Buddhist tradition, April 8 of each year is "Buddha Day," which celebrates the birth of Gautama Buddha.
Western Australia Marine Park is full of sharks
Upon discovering the figure, the friends endeavored to uncover how it ended up on the beach. Various services and institutions were consulted, including the Maritime Museum of Western Australia, the ambassador in China, antique dealers, art historians, various Chinese associations, and independent archaeologists.

The statue likely arrived in Australia in the 15th century during Admiral Zheng He's global voyages, which included the Indian Ocean basin.

Another theory posits that it was brought to Australia by Chinese traders in the 19th century. Similar statues were fairly popular and were crafted to commemorate the Buddha's birthdays [Vesak].

Great white sharks of Australia love the Bay
According to Australian law, the statue belongs to the finders. The figure is flawed, missing several elements, which were possibly deliberately removed and replaced with a more prestigious material such as ivory.

No other Chinese or Ming Dynasty-related items were discovered on the beach. However, Dechamps and Thompson are hopeful that they will find the missing portions of the Buddha statue in the future [and will likely spend $100,001 or die doing so because something else must be on that beach after six centuries]. The Earth's Oceans Just Got Much Deeper

Cleo Abram, Huge If True, Oct. 2, 2023; Sheldon S., CC Liu (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

The Ocean Is Deeper Than You Think. We Need Better Maps
(Cleo Abram) Why deep-sea maps are BAD (and how to fix that)... Our maps of the ocean are surprisingly bad! Google Maps makes it look like we know a lot, but we know less about the ocean floor than we do the surface of Mars.

And that’s a big problem, because we are using the ocean all the time: We’re laying internet cables across it, we fight wars in it, we search it during a crisis -- like the imploded OceanGate Titan submersible or the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370...

[Or that time US forces sabotaged the NordStream Oil Pipeline and tried to blame it on the Russians, creating one of the very worst environmental disasters in the ocean, not to mention a shortage of heating oil for Europe and skyrocketing prices and a war of revenge on the Russians].

After all, 71% of the surface of the Earth is water. Yet, we have a surprisingly limited view of what’s below the water. But that’s also understandable. Because cartographically speaking, water sucks. For Mars or Earth’s surface, we can take pictures. But light doesn’t penetrate to the ocean floor, so we need other ways to see it. The good news is we’re developing that tech right now, and an international group called Seabed 2030 is working to piece together a better map.

There is a terrifying, incredible, alien world on our own planet, and we’re FINALLY using technology to see it more clearly. In this episode of Huge If True, I dive deep -- with help from my friend and fellow video journalist @johnnyharris -- to show how we’re mapping the ocean, the surprising things we’ve discovered in the depths, and why this new technology could be huge if true.

Animal Realm Hell: Volcano Sharks (video)

Expedition Raw (NatGeo); Seth Auberon, Sheldon S., CC Liu (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Sharks discovered inside underwater volcano
I'm afraid of sharks and volcanoes. Sharkcano?!
Exclusive video: A real life "sharkcano"? Ocean engineer Brennan Phillips led a team to the remote Solomon Islands in search of hydrothermal activity. They found plenty of activity — including sharks in a submarine volcano. The main peak of the volcano, called Kavachi, was not erupting during their expedition. So they were able to drop instruments, including a deep-sea camera, into the crater. The footage revealed hammerheads and silky sharks living inside, seemingly unaffected by the hostile temperatures and acidity.

10 "Immortal" Organisms (video)

EpicAdamWildlife.com (Twitter, FB); Seth Auberon, CC Liu (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

(Epic Wildlife) From bacterial colonies that are 4,000,000 years old to a jellyfish that can never die [unless it gets killed], here are TEN IMMORTALS! A kind of bacteria thought to be aged about 4 million years old was found in a cave in New Mexico, USA.
  • Does Buddhism believe in "immortality"?
Does Buddhism believe in "immortality"? Yes, in a sense. It is, however, not the sense we assume in the West. A synonym for nirvana is the "deathless" (Sanskrit amrita, Pali amata, Greek ambrosia). Logically "living forever" and "not dying" should be the same thing, but we assure readers that the two words are not exact synonyms. But if logic or linguistics says there's no difference, how are these two not the same thing? [The answer is technical and could bore some, so if anyone wants to think nirvana is immortal, think it's immortal. It certainly does not pass away. But why it does not pass away is the tricky issue at the heart of the matter. Why does it not pass away? It does not pass away because it does not depend on anything the way everything else does. ...]
Siberian Bacteria
There is a story out of Russia that involves another bacteria that is about 3.5 million years old. And a Russian scientist is injecting himself with it. Could it provide the key to immortality? The scientist, Dr. Anatoli Brouchkov, claims he’s grown stronger and hasn’t been ill in the two years since taking the injections. The bacteria was found embedded in Siberian permafrost in 2009, where it remained alive for millions of years. Scientists tested the bacteria on mice, which exhibited increased fertility. The bacteria was also shown to heal plants. Because it has activated the immune response in test subjects, experts think the bacteria can lead to discovering an elixir of life [kumbha mela ambrosia, amrita, soma] for immortality. While Dr. Brouchkov says he’s experiencing increased health benefits after using himself as a guinea pig, he also admits he has no clue just what the bacteria might be doing to him.

Minced Flatworms
Flatworms, which live in lakes and ponds, could help solve the riddle of immortality. British researchers think the creatures could essentially live forever due to their ability to repeatedly regenerate. In an experiment at Nottingham University, experts took one original worm then cut it into pieces then observed as each section regenerated into an entirely new creature. Over a 4-year period, a colony of some 20,000 flatworms was created from the original specimen, and their organs and bodies don't appear to age. Whether the worm is split vertically or horizontally, it will still regenerate into two separate, living worms. Researchers concluded that unless a single, undivided worm contracts an illness or infection, it could conceivably live forever!

Glass Sea Sponges
These animals might not look so durable. And a lot of people don’t think they look like animals. But their appearance aside, glass sea sponges are estimated to have a lifespan that could approach 15,000 years! That number is based on a study that estimated the age of one specimen at 23,000 years old. Glass sea sponges are often found in the Antarctic at depths up to 3,000 feet. Their name is a reference to their internal, rigid skeletons made of silica. Experts think they evolved into their current form over 700 million years ago and could represent the world’s oldest living animals.

Chinese Mushroom
The original Easter "eggs" we hunt in lawns
Did you know there’s a mushroom found in China that is said to provide huge health benefits? Maybe that’s not surprising, considering it’s a huge fungus! At its widest point, the Lingzhi mushroom measures about 3 feet wide and weighs over 16 pounds! A store owner in Southwest China displayed the immense mushroom at his shop. It has a red, kidney shaped cap and no gills on the underside. The spores are released through fine pores instead. It’s gained a reputation as the "immortality mushroom" and has been used in traditional Chinese medicines for over 2,000 years. It’s said to contain around 1,000 compounds that are beneficial to health, such as polysaccharides, known to enhance the activity of white blood cells. That’s one of the key ingredients of the Lingzhi said to lower blood pressure, stop the growth and spread of cancer cells, and even slow down the aging process! But the magic of the Immortality Mushroom does come with a price tag. A basic bag of Lingzhi mushroom powder runs about $30 US dollars. The entire fungus will set you back around $900.

Mediteranean Jellyfish
This small species of jellyfish lives in the Mediterranean Sea and the waters of Japan. It can apparently live there forever! Turritopsis dohrnii is a creature around 4.5 millimeters wide, smaller than the nail on a pinky finger. You can see what the creature looks like in these photos taken by Takashi Murai and Yiming Chen. Notice the long, thin strand-like tentacles extending from underneath the creature. Those tentacles will retract and the jellyfish will shrink as it reverts to its juvenile polyp state. You can also see that while the shape of the creature’s bells are similar, their coloration ranges from gold to crimson to electric blue. Adult forms of this species can hit a type of reset button, allowing them to essentially start their life cycle all over again. The process is called transdifferentiation and would seem to ensure that this animal can never die unless they’re killed by a predator or stricken with disease. Otherwise they are, in effect, immortal.
