First female 'Pope' for Church of England

Anglican leader: the Archbishop of Canterbury

A historic shift: Sarah Mullally becomes first female head of the Church of England

Don't spoil this for us, Sinead!
Right Honorable Dame Sarah Mullally has‌ broken barriers, ascending to the position of [the 106th] archbishop of Canterbury. This momentous ⁢appointment, announced on October 3rd, marks a pivotal turning point for the Church of England ⁣and the wider Anglican Communion.

Don't think of me as a woman!
She is the 106th individual to hold this esteemed⁣ role and, significantly, she is the first ‍woman to lead the⁣ church established nearly 500 years ago.

The Church of England’s origins trace back to 1534, when King Charles VIII sought to circumvent the ⁤[Roman Catholic] Pope’s refusal to annul‌ his marriage to Catherine of Aragon [who due to him would not bear him a male heir].
  • We say "Pope," but the official Church says she's the "ceremonial head" or primus inter pares, "first among equals.
This act fundamentally reshaped the religious landscape ⁣of England ⁤and now, centuries later, ‌it’s experiencing another profound transformation.

Rome still rules the world with its pope.
[Pope] Mullally, 63, was a leading⁤ contender to succeed Justin Welby, who stepped down in November 2024. Her reputation as⁤ a highly capable administrator undoubtedly played a key role in her ⁣selection.
The Selection Process: An Intentional Path
What Brits need is more pomp 'n circumstance.
The Crown Nominations Commission, responsible for filling the Church of England’s most senior positions, chose Mullally. This commission⁤ comprises prominent bishops‍ and archbishops, and⁣ its process differs significantly‌ from the papal conclaves⁣ of the [Roman] Catholic Church. Here’s ‍a breakdown of how the selection unfolds:
  • Extensive⁣ Consultation: The Commission engages in months of thorough discussions and evaluations.
  • Rigorous review: Candidates are assessed on ⁤their theological understanding, leadership skills, and administrative experience.
  • Governmental Approval: Ultimately, the⁣ chosen nominee ‌requires validation from both the [UK] Prime Minister [Keir Starmer] and the King of England [Charles III], reflecting ⁣the Church of England’s‌ status as the state religion.
I’ve found that this deliberate, multi-layered process underscores the gravity of the Archbishop of Canterbury's position and the importance of selecting a ⁣leader equipped to navigate the challenges and opportunities facing the church today. More

US Christians trying to convert Gaza Muslims

Pfc. Sandoval, Shauna Schwartz, Ashley Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
Come, Gaza, join my Nordic religion led by a Middle Eastern Jew, whose members led Crusades
For the poor Palestinians suffering the murder of 1% of their population, give to Jews

.
Jesus was a Black Palestinian Jew
Do Americans forget, or did they never learn in school, that Western armies always came in two waves, first the male soldiers then the male priests. "Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition." It's hegemony, settler colonialism, invasion, rape, enslavement, genocide, and conversion to Christianity. Did Emperor Constantine dream it up for the Roman Empire, the princes (popes) of the Church for the Holy Roman Catholic Empire, the British for world domination?

An ex-terrorist confirms mass visions [dreams] of Jesus in Gaza, says thousands of Muslims will come to Christ [one way or another]
(CBN News) Jan. 18, 2024: [Now that we've got them right where we want them with the help of our friends and war-partners the Israeli Jews, let's move in and take control of their hearts, minds, and souls. Once we control their religion, we can control them completely.]

A former Palestinian sniper turned Christian believes revival will break out in Gaza and thousands will come to Christ after the end of the Israeli war on Gaza and Hamas.

Taysir "Tass" Abu Saada, a former aide to the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, recently told CBN News' Global Lane that God's Holy Spirit is already changing Palestinian hearts through dreams and visions. [Lies or mass hallucinations?]

"Many Muslims are looking for an alternative to Islam," he said. "My team is, naturally, sharing Christ. So we are looking at a good revival going on already in the Gaza Strip."

TED Talk: OH YOU MEN (video)

T. Chamorro-Premuzic (TEDx, 3/26/19); Ashley Wells, Seth Auberon (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Why do so many incompetent men become leaders?
There is a pathological mismatch between the qualities that seduce us in a leader and those that are needed to be an effective leader.

Based on research on the psychology of leadership, Dr. Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic shows that if leaders were selected on competence rather than confidence, humility rather than charisma, and integrity rather than narcissism, we would end up with more competent leaders and also more female leaders.

In fact, he argues, the main obstacle preventing competent women from becoming leaders is the lack of career obstacles for incompetent men.

SPEAKER
Dr. Chamorro-Premuzic is an international authority in psychological profiling, talent management, leadership development, and people analytics. He is the chief talent scientist at Manpower Group, co-founder and CEO of DeeperSignals and Metaprofiling, and professor of business psychology at both University College London and Columbia University. He has previously held academic positions at New York University and the London School of Economics and lectured at Harvard Business School, Stanford Business School, London Business School, Johns Hopkins, IMD, and INSEAD, as well as being the CEO at Hogan Assessment Systems. He has published ten books and over 150 scientific papers, making him one of the most prolific social scientists of his generation. SEX: Noah Levine destroys Against the Stream

Againstthestream.org; Seth Auberon, Crystal Quintero, Ashley Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
Dharma Punx/Against the Stream to close down due to sexual misconduct by founder.
Dear Judge, thanks for letting me out of prison. I swear I want to have sex with lots of...
.
Hey, don't look at me. I already bailed.
Dear Sangha [Against the Stream Lay Community],

We are writing to inform you of the outcome of the investigation into Noah Levine’s conduct and the future of Against the Stream Buddhist Meditation Society (ATS).

Harvey Weinstein Guilty AF
We regret the delay and lengthy period of silence that contributed to uncertainty, confusion and pain. We have worked hard to conduct the process thoroughly and in a manner that protected the rights of all involved, including strict requirements for confidentiality required by the Grievance Council Procedures. Members of ATS governance have been deliberate and volunteered hundreds of hours to ensure the trustworthiness of the investigation. We retained expert consultants and an attorney to guide us. All of this has taken time. We ask for your understanding for the ways in which the process has been painful for you.

Investigation
So what if I had sex with students?
The ATS Grievance Council received allegations of sexual assault involving Noah Levine on March 27th 2018. Pending an investigation, Mr. Levine was temporarily suspended from teaching at ATS on March 29th. Soon thereafter, Roberta Yang, an experienced attorney and investigator of workplace harassment, was hired to conduct an independent investigation of the initial allegation and other allegations of misconduct that surfaced shortly thereafter.

I may be aging but I'm still a young stud.
Ms. Yang’s task was to determine if the ATS Teachers Code of Ethics was violated by Mr. Levine and convey her conclusions to the ATS Grievance Council. The standard Ms. Yang used was the preponderance of evidence, which means that she considered if the allegations were more likely than not to be true based on her evaluation of statements from witnesses and other evidence. Ms. Yang interviewed, or offered to interview, all affected parties and reached her conclusions independently and without any influence by ATS. Ms. Yang concluded that with multiple women, Mr. Levine violated the Third Precept of the Teacher’s Code of Ethics, namely, “to avoid creating harm through sexuality.” That is to say, Ms. Yang concluded that, based on her evaluation of the evidence she reviewed, the preponderance of that evidence showed such violations.

We're looking for a new RR meeting place.
These findings were carefully considered by the ATS Grievance Council and recommendations were made to the ATS Board of Directors in consultation with an independent ethics consultant. The standard for evaluating a Buddhist teacher’s actions are not the same as the criminal or even the civil standards of proof. Spiritual leaders are held to a higher ethical standard than the public at large and higher than other community leaders. However, ATS’ conclusion is not a finding of guilt or liability by a court; it is our conclusion based on our own evaluation of the evidence presented to us. Mr. Levine denied, and continues to deny, wrongdoing.

At the conclusion of the process, the Board decided to remove Mr. Levine from the Board and from teaching at ATS. The Board further recommends that he seek all necessary support to transform his [mis]understanding and [mis]conduct, especially as it relates to his relation to [asymmetrical] power dynamics.

Coming back to prison, Noah?
Firstly, to the women directly impacted, we wish to remain available to you and to provide whatever support we can that you might find helpful. We consider this another critical moment to study the way that different treatment based on gender constellates in the ATS community specifically, and society more generally. Events such as this have the power to shake one’s confidence in the refuge of Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. We hope that the pain of this moment actually leads us back towards the heart and that we might all find true refuge.

Effects on Organization and ATS Future
I still run my Refuge Recovery Corporation.
The effect of the controversy arising from these events has been devastating for ATS. While ATS has previously experienced precarious financial moments, this period has eroded core capacities of the organization. Fiscal impacts were immediate. A 10th anniversary fundraiser was postponed; a large foundation grant was returned because we could not meet our objectives; other forms of giving contracted. Monthly expenses significantly outpace revenue and our savings have been drawn down. Four Board members resigned, a co-guiding teacher departed, two affiliate centers – Boston and Nashville – are dissociating from ATS, and our Executive Director is planning to depart at the end of his contract period. Each member of our Teachers Council has expressed a wish to dissociate themselves from Mr. Levine – to begin again and share teachings in a new form with students.

Who is our is young sexual harasser Levine?
During the course of the investigation, the Board of Directors, Teachers Council and Executive Leadership explored a number of financial models and collaborative arrangements that would allow ATS to remain a viable, healthy organization. We were unable to find a solution.

With deep sadness, we announce that ATS will close the doors to its Melrose, Santa Monica and San Francisco centers on Sept 30, 2018. Know that the impact of losing a spiritual community has been given every possible consideration. We understand that many of you have been sangha members from the very beginning. Our commitment moving forward is to be available and be present for the grief or anger or confusion that may arise.

Moving Forward [We Still Want Your Money and Our Jobs]
My boys are backing me. High five!
While we have tried to navigate this time with as much skill as we have, we know that these events are a lot and land in different ways for you. To the extent that we can be of support, we wish to be available for you. We will be holding community sessions in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and the teachers will use class time, when appropriate, to help digest all of this. Please know that we’re also part of the sangha – none of this has been easy and we’re experiencing our own forms of loss.

The refuge of Buddha, Dharma and Sangha is supported by people and places, but is never dependent on a person or a place. Though ATS is ending, the Dharma, as always, continues. The ripples and resonances of goodness and sincerity continue.

Jewish in Hollywood gets the [baby cat]
Our teachers and facilitators are actively transitioning to new offerings, groups and spaces to ensure that former ATS communities across the country are supported going forward. In Los Angeles, JoAnna Hardy has announced the formation of the Meditation Coalition, which [nnindicted co-conspirator] Mary Stancavage, Cheryl Slean and some ATS facilitators will be joining. In San Francisco, Vinny Ferraro is in process looking to rent space for the Friday night class. Matthew Brensilver will remain accessible and is committed to serving the sangha in a sustained way. Nashville ATS will continue in the same location as Wild Heart Meditation Center. In Boston, Chris Crotty is committed to ensuring long-term sustainability of sangha in that city and on the east coast. We will announce more details as they come.

That's my boy James Toback up there.
For the next months, Vinny Ferraro’s September weekend retreat will continue as planned, the New Years’ retreat with Cheryl Slean and Dave Smith will be held again in Malibu, and the Women’s Retreat with Mary and JoAnna will be held once again at Joshua Tree in January 2019.

We will update you as details are finalized.

To our beloved community, we are humbled, we are heartbroken, and we grieve with you.

Sincerely,

ATS Board of Directors

God's Red Son
In 1890, on Indian reservations across the West, Native American followers of a new religion danced in circles until they collapsed into trances and saw the other world, the world of spirits next to this one, a dimension over.
In an attempt to suppress this new American faith, the US Army killed over 200 Lakota Sioux at Wounded Knee.

Ghost Dance (legendsofamerica.com)
Louis Warren's God's Red Son offers a startling new view of the religion known as the Ghost Dance, from its origins in the visions of a charismatic Northern Paiute named Wovoka to the tragedy in South Dakota.

To this day, the Ghost Dance remains widely mischaracterized as a primitive and failed effort by Native American militants to resist US imperial conquest and return to their old pre-colonial ways.

In fact, followers of the Ghost Dance sought to thrive in modern America by working for wages, sending their children to the white man's schools, and farming the land as farmhands for white landowners, tenets that helped the religion endure for decades after Wounded Knee.

God's Red Son powerfully reveals how "evangelical" Ghost Dance teachings helped Native Americans retain their identity and reshape the modern world. More

Rapist guru convicted: deadly riots (video)

DW English, AJ, Aug. 25-26, 2017; Dhr. Seven, Ashley Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
Convicted rapist and guru of a "cult" of 60 million followers Gurmeet R.R. Singh

Indian guru's rape conviction triggers riots
(Al Jazeera English, Aug. 26, 2017) More than 32 people have been killed in protests in northern India after a popular spiritual leader named Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was convicted of raping two female followers. He leads a group that claims to have 60 million followers around the world. [He allegedly has also so far convinced 400 male followers to get castrated in order to see God, presumably Brahma, who transcends sexuality and sexual dimorphism. Celibacy is the "way or vehicle to Brahma" or brahmacarya.] Indian authorities have imposed a curfew and cut off Internet services in an effort to contain the devotional rioting.

DW English(DW, Aug. 25, 2017) Communal violence has erupted in the northern Indian city of Panchkula after a popular spiritual guru was convicted of rape. At least 13 people have died in riots following the verdict. A court found Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh guilty of raping two of his followers in 2002. More: dw.com/en/program/dw-news...

Life of Buddha as Play and Cartoon (video)

Seven, Seth Auberon, Ashley Wells, Wisdom Quarterly
What if the Buddha's life were told as an animated cartoon full of pathos and a large cast?
Lissa Coffey (coffeytalk.com) interviews writer and performer Evan Brenner after a Los Angeles presentation of his one-man show (directed by John C. Reilly) at the Bootleg Theatre.

Evan Brenner made two special appearances at Against the Stream, performing "Buddha: A Fantastic Journey" -- which we at Wisdom Quarterly had also thought to write but as a musical called "Sid Buddha Superstar" or, with the help of Jack Black, Bob Odenkirk, and David Cross, "Jeepers Creepers Semi-Star:"

He estimates that he has now performed the 65-minute one-man tour de force between 300-500 times, from memory, sometimes accompanied by lights and musicians, oftentimes with the barest of props.  The play is all heart with quite a bit of acting skill, but its real talent is revealed in the writing.

He thrilled the Dharma Punx audience, infusing a good dose of levity not only in the play -- because Buddhism unlike most teachings that become religions is funny -- but also in the insightful post-performance discussion. The play will eventually be coming out as a book and will include elements, sutras, and incidents left out of the play due to time constraints:

Khema, the chief disciple nun foremost in wisdom, the amazing story of Angulimala, a serial killer whom the Buddha stopped and saved, and possibly the touching tale of Kisa Gotami, a mother who lost her child and her mind whom the Buddha brought back to sanity.

The arduous effort of a two-year process -- going through the 10,000 pages of the Pali Canon, selecting important episodes from Gautama's entire life ranging from Prince Siddhartha's luxurious upbringing to the Buddha's final passing and beyond -- paid off like the austerities of a monk.

In fact, once when Brenner hosted Bhikkhu Bodhi, the prolific English translator of a great deal of the Pali texts, he returned to find an empty New York apartment. Just as he exclaimed, "He must not have come!" he noticed a small saffron bag and realized that the venerable American monastic had indeed arrived and spent the night but with only the barest monastic accoutrements. They really are ascetic.

Director John C. Reilly
And this is really a remarkable theatrical piece, acted out rather than read, sung, or simply told thanks to the contributions of director John C. Reilly, whom we would have never thought even knew the word "Dharma," judging from his Hollywood persona appearing in such mainstream movies as "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" with Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat), or a voice talent in "Wreck It Ralph," or as the Sasquatch in "Tenacious D."

"Killing Buddha" - the movie (video)

Ashley Wells, Dhr. Seven, CC Liu, Wisdom Quarterly
() Betsy Chasse, co-writer/producer of "What the Bleep Do We Know?!," on her latest independent film, "Killing Buddha."

There is a horrific Mahayana Buddhist expression that -- going against the very heart of Theravada Buddhist sentiment -- runs: “If you see the Buddha on the road, [blank] him.”

There are, after all, only five heinous deeds with fixed karmic results: (1) intentionally harming a buddha, (2) matricide, (3) patricide, (4) killing an arhat, (5) or causing a schism in the Sangha.

The consequence is rebirth in the most dismal subhuman plane of existence (avici) in the very next rebirth. Cultivating the intention to perform one of these unimaginable acts is mental karma that goes on to become a verbal act of encouraging others. What does it mean?

It is meant to be facetious, ironic, and shocking: “Do not follow teachers; do not set up others on a pedestal; depend on yourself; be a light/island (dipa) unto yourself, taking no teacher other than the Dharma itself as an idol or savior.”

An American famous for creating “What the Bleep Do We Know?” is setting her sights on Buddhism. Betsy Chasse was perplexed by the message “You are the one you've been waiting for.” But it came to her through what has become a Mahayana commandment of sorts:

Linji the shocking iconoclast
Embrace Nothing. If you meet the Buddha, k*ll the Buddha… only live your life as it is, not bound to anything.” This saying is attributed to iconoclastic Linji, the 9th century founder of the Linji School of Chán (Chinese jhana) Buddhism.

Linji's famous sayings
“Followers of the Way [of Chán], if you want to get the kind of understanding that accords with the Dharma, never be misled by others. Whether you're facing inward or facing outward, whatever you meet up with, just kill it! If you meet a [fully awakened] buddha, kill the buddha. If you meet a patriarch, kill the patriarch. If you meet an arhat, kill the arhat. If you meet your parents, kill your parents. If you meet your kinfolk, kill your kinfolk. Then for the first time you will gain emancipation, will not be entangled with things, will pass freely anywhere you wish to go” (Burston Watson, 1999, The Zen Teachings of Master Lin-Chi: A Translation of the Lin-chi lu, p. 52).

“Those who have fulfilled the 10 stages of bodhisattva-practice are no better than hired field hands; those who have attained the enlightenment of the 51st and 52nd stages are prisoners shackled and bound; arhats and non-teaching buddhas are so much filth in the latrine; bodhi and nirvana are hitching posts for donkeys” (Ibid., p. 26).

The Next "What the Bleep?!"
Chasse wants help. She is asking the public (through crowdfundinglive.com) to participate in this project at any level. Watch videos from the set, look at behind the scenes footage, chat online with the cast and the film makers, and more. She is exchanging these enticements for funding.

While distributing What The Bleep Do We Know?! Chasse was honored to travel the world talking about the film. The most common question people asked was, “How did a broke, out of work, spiritually unconscious, material Valley Girl who was into sex, tequila, and expensive shoes end up being a writer, director and producer of What the Bleep Do We Know!?”

Sometimes it takes the most unlikely of people in the most unusual of circumstances to create something that touches the world like “Bleep” did. The story Chasse told was so funny and resonated with so many people that she decided to write a film about it, a comedy called “Killing Buddha.”

Synopsis
When life is chaotic we are forced to change. This is a lesson successful film producer Sara Wells reluctantly learns when her seemingly perfect life comes crashing down. Desperate for work, she takes on a documentary project about spirituality and the new thought movement. Will “Killing Buddha” mark her triumphant return to the riches she thinks her life once contained?

Or will she and her mismatched crew of seekers, believers, and cynics find that ultimately it’s not what you have and what you believe in, but who you become that counts? Think “Bridget Jones gets hired to shoot a documentary about finding the meaning of life.”

Funny and lighthearted, “Killing Buddha” is a mainstream comedy that is set to include interviews with some of today's greatest pop spiritual teachers -- Deepak Chopra, Barbara Marx Hubbard, Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, and others interacting with the actors as they shoot this “film within the film.”

Why make the film?
“Killing Buddha” is a reminder that everything we seek can be found within ourselves. More

Tibet: "My Reincarnation" (Rebirth)

My Reincarnation - Official Trailer from Zohe Films on Vimeo

Filmed over 20 years by acclaimed documentary filmmaker Jennifer Fox (Flying: Confessions of a Free Woman), "My Reincarnation" chronicles the epic story of the high Tibetan Buddhist master Chögyal Namkhai Norbu and his Western-born son, Yeshi.
The film follows Namkhai Norbu’s rise to greatness as a Buddhist teacher in the West, while Yeshi, recognized at birth as the reincarnation or rebirth of a famous spiritual master (a tulku), breaks away from his father’s tradition to embrace the modern world.

Can the father convince his son to keep the family’s threatened spiritual legacy alive? Never before has a high Tibetan master allowed such complete access to his private life, and it is doubtful that another ever will.

With her intimate entry to both family and icons including the Dalai Lama, Fox expertly distills a decades-long drama into a universal story about love, transformation, and destiny.

This is an epic father-son drama spanning two decades and three generations. It is about Buddhism, cultural survival, identity, inheritance, family, growing old, growing up, faith, meditation, religion, magic, dreaming, spirituality, Dzogchen -- and past and future lives.

The film follows the renowned reincarnate Tibetan spiritual master Chögyal Namkhai Norbu as he struggles to save his spiritual tradition and his Italian-born son, Yeshi, who stubbornly refuses to follow in his father’s footsteps. More
