"Normal" changes! Why is there unhappiness?

Seven (Wisdom Quarterly) Even radiant space beings (akasha devas) were eager to honor the wisdom and compassion of the Buddha, so they brought gifts and greetings (saloeurm.com).

What is normal today will not be so tomorrow. Or what they do then is not what they do now. With that in mind, we often search for absolutes. There aren't many. However, personal moral standards do not change. Ethics, societal norms, behaviors, and general conduct change year to year. But one thing is true, reliable, and very hard to believe.

ALL disappointment, misery, and distress (dukkha) comes only from four sources. It is not what happens to us but how we view and react to what we imagine is happening. How can we be happy as the UFO cover up is laid bare, in the midst of this global financial meltdown, as hypocrisy and deception reign supreme? It's easy. The guiding star is virtue (sila, kusala karma, punya).

There are four responses to seen in our reactions to emergencies: fight, flight, freeze, or faint. These are rooted respectively in aversion, fear, delusion (confusion or not knowing what to do and trying to disappear or experiencing "paralysis by analysis"), and overwhelm (also rooted in delusion when both the problem and the lack of a solution become too much to bear that "checking out" makes sense, in terms of consciousness, desiring intoxication, or leaving spiritually). Greed motivates us towards what we imagine are solutions or sources of sensual pleasure.

Mindful of that, it is easy to see when a cause of unhappiness arises and to counter it with an antidote. It's within us to do that. But it is very helpful to have a source of information. "Uninstructed worldlings" were lost for epochs, ages, and aeons before a fully Enlightened One arose to point out the Truth.

In the meantime, we had to settle for lesser sages able to discern part of the Truth and point the way to the heavens and happiness here and now.

They could not, however, point out any escape from the fundamental problems of rebirth, impermanence, and ultimate disappointment, just temporary respites (sometimes lasting aeons but always temporary). Now when the Buddha-Dharma is available, how many search it out? Few. Most prefer temporary respites and keep watering the problem.

The Causes of All Unhappiness

CRAVING: greed, selfish desire, "evil" wishes (callousness in striving for our fulfillment such as killing not out of hate but for a desired goal), lust, envy, jealousy, yearning for sensual pleasures which themselves can never be appeased by sensual experiences (but we see no other means of soothing our yearning or allaying our pain).

AVERSION: annoyance, irritation, hate, anger, ill will, ire, unfriendliness, the wish to oppose or destroy what we imagine is afflicting or frustrating us, particularly in our ambition and striving for sensual pleasures.

DELUSION: misunderstanding, intoxication, not knowing, confusion, wrong views, perversion, misperception, distortion, intoxication, nescience, ignorance, clinging to mistaken views particularly about karma and its results, or worse, the view that deeds have no results.

FEAR: a form of aversion or inverted hate that rather than seeking to destroy the object of aversion seeks instead to run from it, worry, tremble, become restless, panic, or go into paralysis.

"Gods" of Angkor: Cambodia (Getty)

Art review: "Gods of Angkor: Bronzes from the National Museum of Cambodia" at the J. Paul Getty Museum
At the J. Paul Getty Museum, "Gods of Angkor: Bronzes from the National Museum of Cambodia" is a very small show on a very large subject.

For a viewer, its primary achievement is to make you want to see more. The Khmer Empire was born in 802, when a Hindu monarch, Jayavarman II, declared himself a god [space-faring deva] and established his seat of power in Angkor in the northern reaches of what is today Cambodia.

The city grew to be immense, among the largest cities in the world, with a sphere of influence that encompassed a large chunk of modern-day Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam.

The empire lasted more than 600 years -- nearly until the birth of Columbus [with its world famous center at Angkor Wat, an enormous temple complex shaped like the universe]. More

Earthquake in Burma (Myanmar)

Botswana Gazette (March 27, 2011)
() Many have been killed and injured since an earthquake hit Burma on Thursday, particularly eastern Shan state, where Burma, Thailand, and Laos meet to form the golden triangle, about 50 km from the epicenter of the quake.

An earthquake of about 7.0 magnitude hit Burma. The earthquake struck near the [Golden Triangle] border shared between Burma, Thailand, Laos, and China. The quake reverberated as far as Thailand and Vietnam. Myanmar state radio announced that the latest number they got of people killed was 74 and 111 injured in the quake. But the total will be frequently updated. It is said that some 390 houses, 14 Buddhist monasteries, and 9 government buildings were destroyed. The state-run New Light of Myanmar [propaganda arm] newspaper reported that 15 houses collapsed in the town of Tarlay, where at least 11 people were killed and 29 injured. Another U.N. official said a small hospital there was partially damaged as well as a bridge, making it difficult to access the town. Another two people were killed in the Thai border town of Tachileik, including a 4-year-old boy. Six more people were injured in the town, just across the border from Mae Sai in Thailand's Chiang Rai province. Fears of a tsunami have been allayed as the earthquake was reported to be an inland surface quake.

What Empires Devolve Into (video)

One of the reasons the Chinese empire is so offensive is that it apologetically does what other empires do while hiding it. The U.S., Europe, and other First World contenders have "FEMA camp" plans drawn up and ready to deploy. But communist China is blamed and universally condemned for actually doing in the face of HAARP and other covert attacks. They suppress freedoms more openly than the "free" world, which suppresses them covertly. The example of one does not bode well for the other. Will any individual speak up? With an open heart, humor, and mindfulness, much can be done. One of the best British punk bands to come out of the Crass Era was a group of sincere vegans by the odd moniker Rudimentary Peni (myspace). The trio was very succinct and darkly catchy. One lyrical gem Nick Blinko mined from the depths of his creativity and prescience was:

There will be no coffins When you and I die No consecrated ground No sin to end all sins Or angels with scorched wings And if the thought of it stings Sorry, God, There's no coffins, just bloody jellies No coffins, just bloody jellies Glance at the nice town See the war plan it owns There'll be mass graves So I want my death grant Thirty pounds in advance Buy now, don't leave to chance At least it's the final kill No coffins, just bloody jellies No coffins, just bloody jellies This, their creation To purify the planet A new beginning No, it's not destruction

Catholic-atheist meeting's appeal to youth

The Good Book (planetatheism.com)

Youngsters, tired of that freewheeling atheism? Why not try rule-bound Catholic discipline? Oh sure, our priests are kind of touchy-feely, but we'll settle any lawsuits decades later.

(Reuters) Pope Benedict urged French youths on Friday to help put God back into public debate, either as Christians sharing their faith or as non-believers seeking more justice and solidarity in a cold utilitarian world.

In a video address from the Vatican to an evening rally outside Notre Dame Cathedral in central Paris, the pope also urged them to “tear down the barriers of fear of the other, the foreigner, of those who are not like you” that mutual ignorance can create.

Benedict’s address, projected on a large screen in the square, came at the end of two days of a Vatican-sponsored dialogue between Roman Catholics and atheists, part of a drive to revive the faith in Europe that is a hallmark of his papacy.

“The question of God doesn’t endanger society, it doesn’t threaten human life!” he told the crowd during a break in its evening of modern and ancient Christian music. “The question of God must not be absent from the great questions of our time.” More

Japan tsunami damaged cultural site

Los Angeles Times (March 27, 2011)
Partly because of its deep Shinto and Buddhist roots, Japanese culture exhibits a distinctive aesthetic relationship to nature. Rather than an assembly of individual parts seen and experienced in isolation, nature is a dynamic whole witnessed in constant flux. Change is the only permanence. Traumatic change obviously came in the form of the recent Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. The death toll is mounting. In the region of Matsushima, just up the coast from the hard-hit city of Sendai, upwards of 22,000 have been reported dead or missing from the devastating March 11 tsunami. Matsushima also suffered another awful blow. Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs reports serious damage to the prized landscape of the region... More

WikiLeaks to reveal Antarctic USA-UFO war

() A "war" has been taking place since 2004 near Antarctica between the USA and UFOs according to WikiLeak-ed cables.

EU Times (updated Jan. 12, 2011)

The enormous New Zealand earthquake was not a natural disaster.

(Dec. 13, 2010) A new report circulating in the Kremlin today prepared for President Medvedev by Russian Space Forces (VKS) 45th Division of Space Control says that an upcoming WikiLeaks release of secret US cables details that the Americans have been “engaged” since 2004 in a “war” against UFO’s based on or near the Continent of Antarctica, particularly the Southern Ocean.

According to this report, the United States went to its highest alert level on June 10, 2004 after a massive fleet of UFO’s “suddenly emerged” from the Southern Ocean and approached Guadalajara, Mexico barely 1,000 miles (1,600 km) from the American border. Prior to reaching the US border, however, this massive UFO fleet is said in this report to have “dimensionally returned” to their Southern Ocean “home base.”

The fears of the Americans regarding these Southern Ocean UFO’s began, this report says, during the unprecedented events of July 11, 1991 (referred to as 7/11) when during the Solar Eclipse these mysterious aircraft appeared by the hundreds over nearly all of Mexico including the capital.

Most notable about the events of 7/11 were that as millions of Mexicans were watching on their televisions the National broadcasts of these UFO’s over Mexico City, the American media refused to allow their people to view it.

Since 2004, this report continues, fleets of Southern Ocean UFO’s have continued to emerge from their bases, with the latest such event being this Friday past when another of their massive fleets was sighted over the South American nation of Chile.

The “immediate danger” to our World when these massive UFO fleets emerge from the Southern Ocean, this report warns, are the massive waves caused by their sudden eruption from what are believed to be their underwater base or bases.

In the past week alone, the Clelia II, an Antarctic cruise ship with 160 people on board, was nearly capsized when hit by waves generated by these UFO’s emerging from the Southern Ocean. And just today the Number One Insung has been reported sunk with only 20 of its 42 member crew said saved due to the same cause.

Interesting to note in this report is its confirming our October 14th report US Shuts Down New York City Airspace Over UFO ‘Threat’ that these same Southern Ocean UFO’s were responsible for the closing of the airspace over New York City this past fall (October 13, 2010) when they “appeared” openly and were witnessed by tens of thousands of people, and which, coincidentally, occurred during the same time frame as the mysterious Crystal Skulls of the ancient South American peoples were being exhibited there too. UFO frenzy goes into overdrive over Colorado

Daily Mail Reporter (March 26, 2011)
Red alert: The three red lights in a triangular formation filmed by various people in CO

It's the latest Internet sensation -- amateur footage of three [UFO] red lights in a triangular formation hovering in the night sky above the town of Lafayette in Colorado.

The video, shot last Monday, shows that the sky was clear, and witnesses said they could not see anything connecting the lights.

Leroy Vandervegt, a 50-year-old who has lived in Lafayette for 16 years, shot the video Sunday evening after his 17-year-old son saw the glowing orbs move from south west to south east along the horizon.

"I had no idea what it is," he said. "It wasn't a satellite, it wasn't an airplane and it wasn't a helicopter."

By Friday, five days after posting, more than 39,000 people had watched the video on YouTube, dailycamera.com reports.

Mr. Vandervegt said the lights made no noise and did not blink. The lights remained in a triangular shape as they moved forward, though the shape of the triangle changed.

Denver International Airport officials would not talk about the sighting. But, intriguingly, Allen Kenitzer, the Federal Aviation Administration's spokesman for the Rocky Mountain region, said his staff didn't see anything out of the ordinary. More

Alien Lights over Australia (video)

() Mysterious bright lights have been captured in the sky near Kadina, northwest of Adelaide.

Now local residents are convinced they're being visited by UFOs. The strange lights hovering across the sky were caught on camera by amateur UFO spotters, a group of locals who are hot on the tail of these mysterious objects.

Witnesses' reports alleged the lights do not resemble a helicopter or plane, but are unique, silent, hovering aircrafts. But if they are in fact UFOs, why have they chosen regional Australia as their experimental playground?

Locals apparently aren't afraid of coming face-to-face with the extraterrestrial creatures and would welcome the aliens into the community. However, some have expressed concern about being abducted and probed.

HAARP: Military Earthquake Machine (video)

() If one doubts that the US would purposely devastate Japan with a series of earthquakes, history says otherwise. The US purposely dropped two nuclear bombs on civilians with the objective of murdering hundreds of thousands of noncombatants, utterly destroying their country, and demonstrating supreme power for all the world to fear.

Is there a "machine" that can cause earthquakes? There is more than one.

The United States has three ionospheric heating facilities: HAARP, HIPAS (near Fairbanks, Alaska), and Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico.

EISCAT (European Incoherent Scatter Scientific Association) operates an ionospheric heating facility capable of transmitting over 1 GW (1,000,000,000 watts) effective radiated power (ERP), near Tromsø in Norway.

Russia has the Sura ionospheric heating facility, in Vasilsursk near Nizhniy Novgorod, capable of transmitting 190 MW ERP.

There is another site operated by a military subcontractor under an arrangement between the US and Canadian governments. It is located near Cape Race, Newfoundland, Canada (N46° 38.649' W53° 9.010'). Since this site originally had minimal to no grid power available, it may be a passive listening post for transmissions emitted by other HAARP sites.

In August 2002, further support for those critical of HAARP technology came from the State Parliament (Duma) of Russia. The Duma published a report on HAARP written by its International Afairs and Defense Committees. It was signed by 90 deputies and presented to President Vladimir Putin.

The report claimed that "the U.S. is creating new integral geophysical weapons that may influence the near-Earth medium with high-frequency radio waves... The significance of this qualitative leap could be compared to the transition from cold steel to firearms, or from conventional weapons to nuclear weapons. This new type of weapons differs from previous types in that the near-Earth medium becomes at once an object of direct influence and its component."

However, given the timing of the Russian intervention, it is possible that it was related to a controversy at the time concerning the US withdrawal in June 2002 from the Russian-American Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty.

This high level concern is paralleled in the April 1997 statement by the U.S. Secretary of Defense over the power of such electromagnetic weaponry.

Russia owns and operates an ionospheric heater system as powerful as HAARP called Sura, located roughly 150 km from the city of Nizhny Novgorod.

The objectives of HAARP became the subject of controversy in the mid-1990s, following claims that the antennas could be used as a weapon.

A small group of American physicists aired complaints in scientific journals such as Physics and Society. They charged that the HAARP project could be seeking ways to destroy or disable enemy spacecraft or disrupt communications over large portions of the planet.

The physicist-critics were not complaining about the project's initial stages. They were expressing fears that HAARP could be expanded into a weapon. That this is where it was headed was apparent by its funding. It was coming from the Office of Naval Research and the Air Force Research Laboratory.

These concerns were amplified by Bernard Eastlund, a physicist who developed some of the concepts behind HAARP in the 1980s and proposed using high-frequency radio waves to beam large amounts of power into the ionosphere. This would energize its electrons and ions and disable incoming missiles with the idea of knocking out satellite communications.

The US military became interested in the idea as an alternative to the laser-based "Star Wars" Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI). However, Eastlund's ideas were eventually dropped as SDI mutated into the limited National Missile Defense. Contractors selected to build HAARP have denied that any of Eastlund's patents were used in the development of the project.

After the physicists raised early concerns, controversy was stoked by local activism. In September 1995, a book entitled Angels Don't Play This HAARP: Advances in Tesla Technology by Nick Begich, Jr. -- son of the late Congressman Nick Begich (D-AK) and brother of US Senator Mark Begich (D-AK) -- claimed that the project in its present stage could be used for "geophysical warfare."

Signs of the Apocalypse: TV's Sarah Palin

Eudai Monia, Wisdom Quarterly: Signs of the (next) Apocalypse

Does anyone remember that uniquely American political phenomenon Sarah Palin? Of course we do, but we have been hearing and seeing much less of her lately. And no wonder... A WP/ABC News poll a week ago found that her approval ratings among Republicans had plunged. The numbers of Republicans who are "strongly unfavorable" towards her have risen dramatically, prompting commentators to write of presidential bid "imploding." Mormons understand the "heaven" (Kolob) The creators of "South Park" have a new musical all about Mormonism and Kolob. What's Kolob? Just as the Egyptians had creation gods, Kolob is a planet described in Mormon scripture as the planet where God lives. It's not known to astronomy. But in the Book of Abraham, a work published by Mormon founder Joseph Smith Jr. from his translation of an Egyptian original, Kolob is the heavenly body nearest to the throne or residence of the "God." While it is called a "star," stars in Mormonism also refer to planets, and therefore many consider Kolob a planet. Embarrassed Mormons consider Kolob a Christian metaphor. A literal interpretation makes more sense: "God" came to Earth by mind or craft to stir up a following. This is exactly in accordance with the Hindu and Buddhist conception of devas who live on other planets and other dimensions.

2012 means global change, and "time" is central. What's happening to the climate and environment while our government provokes war around the world? When we promote consumerism and conspicuous consumption, that has a profound impact on pollution levels and the aspirations of people everywhere. We can hardly affect a government of corporations by corporations by corporations -- the best government money can buy. But we can influence how other nations and citizens see us as apart from the government that represents us (not in a representative sense, just as an ambassador of war and hegemony). If we are the best, it has to be in spite of our military-industrial complex and its lipservicers.

Earthquakes strike Burma, who's next?

Burma quake sends shockwaves across Thai border

Damage in Burma unknown but 6.8 earthquake sparks panic in Bangkok and Chiang Rai, Thailand. Bangkok, pictured here in backpacker's paradise Khao San Road, is full of Americans and Europeans (Sean Smith/Guardian).

A powerful earthquake has struck north-eastern Burma, shaking buildings as far away as Bangkok in Thailand. The quake struck near Burma's borders with Thailand and Laos, about 70 miles (110km) from Chiang Rai. The northern Thai city sustained a small amount of damage, according to Thai television. Little is known from Burma, a remote area where communications are difficult. The country's military government also tightly controls information. The Pacific tsunami warning center said the quake was located too far inland to create a tsunami. More>>
  • This suggests that HAARP or its operators are imperfect. For surely the target was Nyapidaw (Burma's secretive new capital) not the hinterlands.
Why, but why?
Burma (called Myanmar by its military dictators) was warned and has now been struck with an unimaginable geophysical weapon the US possesses. But by "US" one does not mean the normal military (pawns) or the governmental apparatus in Washington, D.C. (rooks). They are not wielding HAARP. And HAARP cannot be reined in by the face of our government.

The "shadowy government," as Senator Inouye (Hawaii) called it, has its own funding (drug dealing, pharmaceuticals, arms sales, oil profits, all kinds of multinational corporate connections). It has its own hierarchy. What would one call this Shadow Government?

US President Eisenhower labelled it the "military-industrial complex." That complex goes beyond our country's clandestine services (NSA, NSC, CIA, FBI, and the secret arms of empire) and the Pentagon but is in league with these agencies. Logic would dictate that it went too far in Japan -- not counting on the Fukushima nuclear disaster -- but apparently it does not feel it went far enough.

Experiments conducted from reverse-engineered advanced technology as well as channeled information has devastating effects on the Earth, and some entities will not sit idly by as HAARP and nuclear arms are used. This same complex was involved in the original Tsunami that devastated Indonesia with a great deal of collateral damage.

If that was not going too far, why would disrupting weather patterns and generating massive quakes in Indonesia, Iran, China, New Zealand, Japan, and now Burma. Of course, this country is involved in other wars and invasions that are not widely known and not reported in this country at all. But our population seeds those armed services, and our parents, relatives, friends, and civic leaders support and cheer them on.

Pres. Barack Obama is reading scripts with speeches written for him that are deceptive.

The result for them is brain damage, moral ruin, concussions, irradiated vaccinations, mysterious (Gulf War style) syndromes, rage, and suicide, all at a cost to us. We are not running this game, but we are involved and some of us are complicit. These things are not happening by accident or necessity. There is choice here.

Christian missionary "rapists" settle suit

The Holy Father crowns another underling to carry on the good work of conquering and destroying the world's heathen children and infidels (daylife.com)

Northwest Jesuits reach $166 million sex abuse settlement
PORTLAND, Oregon (Reuters, March 25, 2011) - The Pacific Northwest chapter of the Roman Catholic Church's Jesuit order has agreed to pay $166 million to settle more than 500 [cases of systematic, institutionally-sanctioned rape and] child sexual abuse claims against priests in five states, attorneys said [today].

  • [Why would European Christian monotheists target the psychological destruction of nature-loving, shaman-guided indigenous children through the common war crime of rape and child molestation? These were celibate priests of the Holy Church, not lust-and-hate-filled soldiers. If you can't trust God's servants, how are you to trust the God that sent them?]

The payout by the Society of Jesus, Oregon Province -- part of an agreement to resolve its two-year-old bankruptcy case -- marks one of the biggest settlements to date in the Catholic Church's sexual abuse scandals.

According to lawyers for the victims, it also is the largest ever by a Catholic religious order.

The Oregon Province is the Northwest chapter of the Rome-based Jesuit order and covers Oregon, Washington state, Alaska, Idaho, and Montana.

The victims, most of them Native Americans from remote Alaska Native villages or Indian reservations in the Pacific Northwest, were sexually or psychologically abused as children by Jesuit missionaries in those states in the 1940s through the 1990s, the plaintiffs' attorneys said.

"No amount of money can bring back a lost childhood, a destroyed culture or a shattered faith," lawyer Blaine Tamaki, who represents about 90 victims in the settlement, said in a statement.

"This settlement recognizes that the Jesuits betrayed the trust of hundreds of young children in their care," Tamaki said. "These religious figures should have been responsible for protecting children, but instead raped and molested them." More>>

The Buddha and King Pasenadi of India

Buddhanet.net (edited by Wisdom Quarterly)

King Pasenadi learns the pain of attachment
King Pasenadi ruled in Kosala, which was a province north of Magadha -- where the Buddha lived -- ruled by King Bimbisara. The capital of the kingdom of Kosala was Savatthi), where the Buddha frequently visited as a wandering teacher in northern India.

One of King Pasenadi's sisters was the chief queen of King Bimbisara, which made him the brother-in-law of King Bimbisara.

King Pasenadi became a follower of the Buddha very early on and remained a loyal supporter. His chief queen was Mallika, a wise and spiritual queen who was well versed in the Dharma and acted as the king's guide on several occasions.

Although raised far to the west (ancient Gandhara, modern Afghanistan), the Buddha mainly taught in northern India around Magadha.

The first time the king met the Buddha, he asked, "How is it that Master Gautama claims he has gained full enlightenment? Master Gautama is both young in years and young as a renunciate."

The Buddha replied, "Great King, there are four things that should not be looked down on or despised because they are young:

  1. noble warrior (kshstriya)
  2. serpent (naga, a simple snake or a reptilian shape-shifter)
  3. fire, and a
  4. monastic (bhikkhu).

An enraged young warrior may ruthlessly cause harm to others. The bite of even a small snake may kill. A little fire may become a huge inferno that destroys building and forests. Even a young monastic may be a saint [fully enlightened]."

Hearing this, King Pasenadi understood that the Buddha was indeed a wise teacher and decided to become his follower.

Ancient India extended west to modern Iran. Evidence shows the Buddha's hometown, Kapilavastu, was near modern Bamiyan and Kabul, whereas Lumbini was in the province of Baluchestan (S.E. Iran, S.W. Afghanistan, W. Pakistan). See ranajitpal.com

The king liked going to the Buddha to seek advice. During his official duties, he often found time to visit and speak to the Buddha.

When discoursing with the Buddha one day, he received news that Queen Mallika had given birth to a daughter. The king was not pleased with the news because he had been longing for a son.

The Buddha spoke in praise of women. He reminded the king: "Some women are better than men, O king. There are women who are wise and good, who regard their mothers-in-law as goddesses and are pure in thought, word, and deed. They may one day give birth to brave sons who would rule a country."

The king remembered then once hearing the Buddha say, "It is the dear ones whom we love [with deluded attachment] that bring us [through whom we bring ourselves] sorrow and lamentation, pain, grief, and despair."

The king asked Queen Mallika whether she agreed with the Buddha. She said that if the Buddha had said so, it must be true. But the king was not satisfied. "How can a loved one bring sorrow?" he wondered.

Queen Mallika approached a brahmin to ask the Buddha to explain this. Having heard many stories to explain the problem, the brahmin related them to the queen. She then quizzed the king: "Sire, what is your opinion, is your daughter Princess Vajira dear to you?"

"Yes, Mallika, she is very dear to me," answered the king.

"If some misfortune were to befall Princess Vajira, would that bring sorrow and lamentation, pain, grief, and despair?"

"Yes," answered the king.

"Sire, it was because of this that the Buddha said that it is dear ones whom we love that bring sorrow and lamentation, pain, grief, and despair."

"Mallika," exclaimed the king, "It is wonderful! It is marvelous! How far the Enlightened One sees with understanding."

When the king later lost a battle to his nephew (King Bimbisara's patricidal son) and had to retreat to his capital of Savatthi, the Buddha commented to his disciples that neither the victor nor the defeated experience peace:

"Victory breeds hatred.
The defeated live in pain.
Happily the peaceful live,
Giving up victory and defeat."

Later there was another battle. The two kings fought again and King Pasenadi won. Moreover, he captured King Ajatasattu, his nephew, alive with all his war elephants, chariots, horses, and soldiers.

The king thought that he might release the young king but keep his elephants, horses, and men. He wanted the satisfaction of keeping these material possessions as the prizes of victory.

On hearing his, the Buddha told his disciples that it would have been wiser for King Pasenadi not to have kept anything for himself. The truth of this statement applies even to our modern war-weary world:

"A man may plunder, as he will.
When others plunder in return,
He who is plundered will plunder in return.
The Wheel of Karma turns round
and makes the ones who are plundered plunderers."

King Pasenadi of Kosala passed away at 80 when his son, Prince Vidudabha [as in the tragic case of King Bimbisara, a stream enterer, when he was overthrown by his treacherous patricidal son Prince Ajatasattu], revolted against him.

Then as now, wandering yogis are regarded as "saints" in India (Vitor E. Santos/Flickr).

The King Learns to Assess Character
One evening, when King Pasenadi was having a discussion with the Buddha, there passed on the road a wandering band of yogis with long knotted hair, hairy bodies, and long fingernails.

They walked by slowly, with heads bowed. At once the king got up, approached them, and knelt down in homage, uttering his own name three times.

The king came back to the Buddha and said, "Venerable sir, there were saints among those ascetics. Just see how calmly they walked with heads bent low."With his divine eye faculty the Buddha saw that those men were not saints, not even yogis, but spies who were sent out to gather information.

"Your majesty," explained the Buddha, "by mere appearances alone it is not possible for one who leads a life of comfort and sensual pleasure to know the real nature of another.

If we want to understand a people's real nature, their good and bad qualities, we must associate with them for some time. We must be wise and develop sharpness of mind."

"We can know people's purity by conversing with them, observing their courage in the face of misfortune, and even understand their level of wisdom during discussions with them. Bad people, O king, sometimes pretend to be good, and it is difficult for you to judge their moral character."

There is ample evidence of ETs (devas, asuras, nagas, kinnaras), UFOs (vimanas), and even nuclear weapons in the long history of ancient India, including ancient Buddhist texts that frequently mention cosmology.

L.H.C. could be world’s first "time machine"

Paranormal-Mysteries.co.uk News: UFOs, ETs...Other Unexplained Phenomena)
Is it a coincidence that science suddenly came around on the possibility of time travel? CERN retarted the L.H.C. in 2009 (newtech.aurum3.com).

(Physorg.com) If the latest theory of Tom Weiler and Chui Man Ho is right, the Large Hadron Collider -- the world’s largest atom smasher that started regular operation last year -- could be the first machine capable causing matter to travel backwards in time.

“Our theory is a long shot,” admitted Weiler, who is a physics professor at Vanderbilt University, “but it doesn’t violate any laws of physics or experimental constraints.”

One of the major goals of the collider is to find the elusive Higgs boson: the particle that physicists invoke to explain why particles like protons, neutrons and electrons have mass. If the collider succeeds in producing the Higgs boson, some scientists predict that it will create a second particle, called the Higgs singlet, at the same time.

According to Weiler and Ho’s theory, these singlets should have the ability to jump into an extra, fifth dimension where they can move either forward or backward in time and reappear in the future or past.

“One of the attractive things about this approach to time travel is that it avoids all the big paradoxes,” Weiler said. “Because time travel is limited to these special particles, it is not possible for a man to travel back in time and murder one of his parents before he himself is born, for example. However, if scientists could control the production of Higgs singlets, they might be able to send messages to the past or future.”

Unsticking the “brane”
The test of the researchers’ theory will be whether the physicists monitoring the collider begin seeing Higgs singlet particles and their decay products spontaneously appearing. If they do, Weiler and Ho believe that they will have been produced by particles that travel back in time to appear before the collisions that produced them.

Weiler and Ho’s theory is based on M-theory, a “theory of everything.” A small cadre of theoretical physicists have developed M-theory to the point that it can accommodate the properties of all the known subatomic particles and forces, including gravity, but it requires 10 or 11 dimensions instead of our familiar four. This has led to the suggestion that our universe may be like a four-dimensional membrane or “brane” floating in a multi-dimensional space-time called the “bulk.”

According to this view, the basic building blocks of our universe are permanently stuck to the brane and so cannot travel in other dimensions. There are some exceptions, however. Some argue that gravity, for example, is weaker than other fundamental forces because it diffuses into other dimensions. Another possible exception is the proposed Higgs singlet, which responds to gravity but not to any of the other basic forces. More>>

The End of America? (2012 Predictions)

Seven, Dorrian, Wells (Wisdom Quarterly)

Wisdom Quarterly has enough for a recurring feature, "Signs of the Apocalypse." But then the apocalypse -- of which there are many -- might be confused with Judeo-Christian Armageddon, the war the Israeli government and Christian fundamentalists long to fight.

But such wars never end war -- there is no war to end all wars -- but only perpetuate the idea that the way to fight fighting is by fighting, ad absurdum, ad nauseum, ad infinitum. The war stops now when it is recognized as arising or being sustained from within. This may be what John Lennon and Yoko Ono were saying.

How long does the Dharma take?
The Buddha said this Dharma is immediate with immediate results. This is often understood as meaning that it is timelessly true, which it is. But it goes further: There is an immediate effect of practice. For right in that moment of practice, greed, anger/fear, and delusion dissolve. They may re-arise when we stop being generous, friendly, and mindful. But immediately in that moment, they dissolve. It's the power of now.

Enlightenment does not dawn the moment we hit the cushion and sink into serenity carried by the sound of a singing bowl. But when enlightenment -- the result of serenity, mindfulness, and systematically contemplating Dependent Origination -- does dawn, it does so in just a moment. It was always there; it was always available. And even now in our benighted state we can be with that peace and contribute to it.

In the meantime, as apocalypses advance, it's good to have a sense of humor about it. Caught up in delusion and ignorance of what is really going on, What's so real to us that it's worth fear and agitation that upsets the mind or causes us to act (karma) in ways that will serve no one's ultimate good?

Buddhist Prophecy 2012
The Bodhisattva (future buddha) in a former life was a seer and mystic. A king came to him trembling in fear. He had experienced 16 bewildering dreams that his brahmin priest advisers could not satisfactorily interpret; they recommended blood sacrifices instead.

The Bodhisattva allayed the king's fear and explained each of these visions of things to come. Is that time now? (The truth is that time and history are cyclical, so these things have happened, are happening, and will happen again, culminating not in "The End" but interspersed with good, better, and great times, too).

2012: Buddhist Prophecy (Sixteen Dreams)

Wisdom Quarterly (condensed translation, Mahasupina Jataka, Jatakakatha)
Is time running out in the countdown to 2012? In this dream interpretation the Buddha predicts the future based on moral and ethical decay, which we can do something about, rather than the calendar, which we cannot (mayanprophecy2012).

Sixteen Dreams (Jataka 77)
King Pasenadi of Kosala once had 16 frightening dreams. His court chaplains, brahmin advisers, offered to interpret them.

As the king recounted the dreams, the brahmins looked worried. Wringing their hands they said, “These dreams portend one of three calamities: harm to your kingdom, your wealth, or your life.”

The Brahminical "solution" they offered was a ritual animal sacrifice reminiscent of the Jewish and outmoded Christian practice of slaughtering red heifers and sacrificial lambs, a practice that unfortunately still lingers in Hinduism (as in Nepal).

Queen Mallika advised him to seek out best of all brahmins in the human and deva worlds, the Buddha, rather than the advice of his court brahmins.

Thanks to Queen Mallika, the king has his fears allayed by the Buddha.

JETAVANA, India - The king arrived at the monastery, paid his respects, and told the Buddha about his 16 bewildering dreams:

1. “Four black bulls came together from the four directions with every intention to fight. A great crowd gathered to see them fight, but they were bluffing and dispersed. What will come of it?” The Buddha explained: “This was a dream of the distant future when rulers are stingy, citizens corrupt, the world upside down, and good is declining while bad is increasing. At that time, no rain will fall from the heavens, monsoons will forget their season, crops will wither, and famine will spread across the land. Immense clouds will gather, farmers will rush to bring in the rice they had spread to dry in the sun, workers will take their tools and hurry to repair the reservoir walls. Thunder will roar, and lightning will flash from the clouds. However, just as the bulls in your dream did not fight, these clouds will retreat without giving rain. This is what shall come of this dream. But this dream applies to the remote future. The brahmins only said what they said to profit and have their livelihood from it. What was the second dream, sire?”

There are "weather gods," extraterrestrial devas with the power to interfere with meterological events (Dream 1), just as there are unseen elemental "nature spirits" or bhumi-devas (Dream 10).

2. “My second dream was about tiny trees and shrubs that burst through the soil. When they were only a few inches high, they flowered and fruited.” “Sire, this dream will be realized in future when the world has fallen into decay and the average human lifespan is short. Passions then will be so strong that even very young girls will live with men, get pregnant, and have children symbolized by the the flowers and fruit.”

3. “I saw cows suckling from their own newborn calves.” “This dream will come when age is no longer respected. In the future young people will have no regard for parents or parents-in-law. They will handle the family estate themselves. If they please they will give food and clothing to the old folks but not if it does not suit them. The aged, destitute and dependent, will survive only by the favor and whim of their own children, like big cows suckled by newborn calves.”

4. “Men unyoked a team of strong, sturdy oxen, and replaced them with young steers, too weak to draw the load. Those young steers refused to pull. The wagons did not move at all?” “In the future, in the days of corrupt rulers, unjust and stingy leaders will not honor wise leaders skilled in diplomacy. They will not appoint experienced, learned judges to the courts. On the contrary, they will honor the very young and foolish and appoint inexperienced and unprincipled judges to the courts. Naturally, these appointees, due to ignorance of statecraft and the law, will not be able to bear the burden of their responsibilities. Because of incompetence they will have to throw off the yoke of public office. When that happens, the aged and wise will remember being passed over. And even though they are able to cope with the difficulties, they will refuse to help, saying: ‘It is no business of ours since we have become outsiders.’ They will remain aloof, and the government will fall to ruins. It will be just as when young steers yoked instead of a team of sturdy oxen.”

5. “I saw an incredible horse with a mouth on each side of its head being fed fodder on both sides. That dreadful horse ate voraciously with both its mouths.” “In the days of corrupt and irresponsible leaders, covetous people will be appointed judges. These despicable magistrates, blind to virtue and honesty, will take bribes from both sides. That is, they will be doubly corrupt, eating with two mouths at once.”

6. “I saw people holding out a brightly polished golden bowl, which must have been worth a fortune. They were actually begging an old jackal to pee in it. Then I saw the repulsive beast do just that.” “In the remote future, when immoral rulers from royal lines mistrust the established administrators, preferring instead the low of the country. Because of the rulers’ blindness, nobles will decline and the low will be raised to the status of leaders. Naturally, the great families will give their daughters to them in marriage. The union of the noble with the ignoble will be like the urinating of the old jackal into the golden bowl.”

7. “I saw a man braiding rope. As he worked, he dropped the finished rope at his feet. Under his bench, unknown to him, lay a hungry pregnant jackal kept eating the rope just as fast as he braided it.” “In far off days women will crave men, strong drink, extravagant clothes, jewelry, and base entertainments. In their profligacy these women will get drunk with their lovers and carry on shamelessly. In so doing they will neglect their homes and families. They will pawn household valuables, selling everything for drink and amusements, even the means of future earnings. Just as the hungry jackal under the bench ate the rope of the rope-maker, so these women will squander the savings earned by their families.”

8. “At a palace gate there stood a big pitcher full to the brim. Around it stood many empty pitchers. From all directions there came a steady stream of people carrying pots of water they poured into the already full pitcher. The water from the full pitcher kept overflowing wastefully soaking into the sand. Still the people came and poured more and more water. Not a single person even glanced at the empty pitchers more in need of filling.” “In the future when the world is in decline, the country will grow weak, and its leaders will be poorer and more demanding. These rulers in their poverty and selfishness will make the whole country work exclusively for them. They will force citizens to neglect their own work and to labor for them. For the rulers’ sake they will plant sugar cane, make sugar-mills, and boil down molasses. For the rulers’ sake they will plant flower gardens and orchards and gather fruits. They will harvest the crops and fill the storerooms and warehouses to overflowing, but they will be unable even to glance at their own empty stores at home. It will be like filling and overfilling the full pitcher, heedless of the needy, empty ones.”

9. “I saw a deep pool with sloping banks overgrown with lotuses. From all directions, a wide variety of animals came to drink water from that pool. Strangely, the deep water in the middle was terribly muddy. But the water at the edges, where all those thirsty creatures had descended into the pool, was unaccountably clear and sparkling.” “When rulers grow increasingly corrupt, ruling capriciously according to their own whim and pleasure, they will not make judgments according to what is right. Being greedy, they will grow fat on lucrative deals and bribes. Showing no mercy or compassion to their people, they will be fierce and cruel. These rulers will amass wealth by crushing their subjects like stalks of sugar cane in a mill and by taxing them to the last cent. Unable to pay these oppressive taxes, citizens will abandon villages, towns, and cities and flee like refugees to the borders. The heart of the country will be a wilderness, while the remote areas along the borders will teem with people. The country will be just like the pool, muddy in the middle and clear at the edges.”

10. “I saw rice cooking in a pot but never getting done. By ‘never getting done’ I mean that it looked as if the cooking were going on in three distinct stages sharply delineated and separate from each other: One part of the rice was sodden, another part was hard and raw, and the third part looked like it was perfectly cooked.” “In days to come leaders will become corrupt. The administrators [noble caste] will follow the leader’s example and so will the elite educated class [brahmin caste]. The townspeople, the merchants, and at last even the laborers will become corrupt. Eventually, everyone in the country, the sages and even the devas of the land, will become immoral. Even the winds that blow over the realm of such a corrupt leader will grow cruel and lawless. Because even the skies and the spirits of the skies over that land will be disturbed, they will cause a drought. Rain will never fall on the whole territory at once. It may rain in the upper districts, but in the lower it will not. In one place a heavy downpour will damage the crops, while in another area the crops will wither from drought. The crops sown within a single country -- like the rice in the pot -- shall have no uniform character.”

11. “I saw rancid buttermilk being bartered for precious sandalwood worth a fortune in gold.” “In the distant future, when my teaching is waning [note the Buddha's teaching was predicted to remain uncorrupted for 1,000 years], there will be many greedy, shameless monastics, who for the sake of their bellies dare to preach the very words in which I have warned against greed! Because they desert the liberating-Dharma to gratify their stomachs, and because they sided with holders of various views, their preaching will not lead to nirvana. Their only thought as they preach will be to use fine words and sweet voices to induce lay believers to give them costly robes, delicate food, and every comfort. Others will seat themselves beside the highways, at busy street corners, or at the doors of rulers’ palaces where they will stoop to preach for money, even for a pittance! Thus these monastics will barter away my teaching that leads to liberation from suffering for food, robes, or coins! They will be like those who exchanged precious sandalwood worth a fortune in pure gold for rancid buttermilk.”

12. “I saw dried gourds sinking in the water.” “In the days of unjust rulers, when the world is upside down, when leaders favor the low rather than the noble, the low will become great leaders, while the nobles will sink into poverty. In the leader’s court and in the courts of justice, the words of the low alone will be recognized. Like the dried gourds, they will be firmly established. In the assemblies of monastics it will be the same. Whenever there are inquiries about proper behavior, rules of conduct, or rules of discipline, only the counsel of wicked, corrupt monastics will be considered. The advice of modest monastics will be ignored. It will be as when the empty pumpkins sank.”

13. “I saw huge blocks of solid stone as big as houses floating like dried gourds on water.” “At a time of corrupt rulers who honor the low, who become great leaders, while the nobles fade into obscurity. The nobles will receive no respect, while ignorant upstarts are granted honors. In the ruler’s court and in law courts, the words of nobles, learned in the law, will drift idly by like those solid stones. They will not penetrate deep into the hearts of people. When the wise speak, the ignorant will merely laugh at them with scorn, saying ‘What is it these individuals are saying?’ In the monastic assemblies as well, people will not respect the excellent elders. Their words will not sink deep but will drift idly by, just like those rocks floating on water.”

14. “I saw tiny frogs, no bigger than miniature flowers, swiftly pursuing huge black snakes and devouring them.” “In future days when the world is declining, at that time human passions will be so strong that husbands will be thoroughly infatuated with childish brides. Men will lose all judgment and self-respect. And being completely smitten, they will place their infantile wives in charge of everything -- servants, livestock, granaries, gold and silver, everything in the house. Should the over-fond husband presume to ask for some money or a favorite robe, he will be told to mind his own business and not to be so inquisitive about property in her house. These abusive young wives will exercise power over their husbands as if their men were hired servants or slaves. It will be like the tiny frogs that gobbled up the big black snakes.”

15. “I saw a village crow, a vile creature with all the ten vices,* attended by an entourage of Mallard ducks, beautiful birds with feathers of golden sheen.” “In the reign of weakling rulers there will be some who know nothing about governing. They will be fools and cowards who understand neither battle nor the art of leadership. Fearing that they may be deposed in a revolt or revolution, they will elevate even their servants, bath-attendants, barbers, and the like [that is, loyal but shockingly unqualified people] to positions of power. These rulers will ignore the real administrators. Cut off from favor and unable to support themselves, the real administrators will be reduced to kissing up like sycophants to the upstart rulers, as when the crow had regal Mallard ducks for a retinue. And, sire, your sixteenth dream?”

16. “I saw goats chasing leopards and eating them. At the sight of goats in the distance, the leopards were stricken with terror and fled to hide in thickets quaking with fear. Such was my dream. What will come of it?” “This dream too will not have its fulfillment until the time of immoral rulers. The low will be raised to important posts and will become the favorites of the administration. Real administrators will sink into obscurity and distress. Gaining power in courts of law because of such favor, the low will claim the ancestral estates of the impoverished traditional leaders, demanding their titles and property. When the real owners plead for their rights in court, the ruler’s minions will have them beaten and tortured, then taken by the throat and thrown out with words of scorn: ‘That ought to teach you to know your place, fools!’ they will shout. ‘How dare you dispute it? The ruler shall hear of your insolence, then we will have your hands and feet chopped off!’ At this, the terrified nobles will agree that black is white and that their own estates belong to these upstarts. They will then hurry off and cower in agony and fear. Likewise, at that time, unprincipled monastics will harass good and worthy recluses until the worthy ones flee from the monasteries to the forest. This oppression of real nobles by the low and of good monastics by bad ones will be like the intimidation of leopards by goats. However, you have nothing to fear from this. This dream like the others only refers to the future.”

When the Buddha had reassured the king and explained the dreams, he added: “It was neither truth nor love that prompted those brahmins to make the prophecies they did. It was greed and selfishness that led them to prescribe such animal sacrifices.”

Then he said, “Nor are you the first to have had these dreams. They were dreamed by rulers in the past as well. Then, as now, brahmins found in them a pretext for sacrifices.” At King Pasenadi’s request, the Buddha then recounted this story of the past:

*The crow's ten bad habits or "vices" are that it is: destructive, reckless, greedy, gluttonous, rough, merciless, weak, noisy, forgetful, and wasteful.
