Tibetan girl came from Shangri-La

There are at least two "Shangri-Las," the mythical and one called Shangri-La, Yunnan, China along the Yangtze River, where marriages arranged by caring families are the norm. Where's Dong Dong?

Lost Horizon (James Hilton)
Shangri-La is a fictional place in Tibet's Kunlun Mountains [1], or mythological Kunlun, described in the 1933 novel Lost Horizon by the British author James Hilton.

Hilton portrays Shangri-La as a mystical, harmonious valley, gently guided from a Buddhist lamasery, enclosed in the western end of the Kunlun Mountain [1].

In the novel, the people who live in Shangri-La are almost immortal, living hundreds of years beyond the normal lifespan and only very slowly ageing in appearance [possibly in our Hollow Earth, called Agartha, or on another dimension within this world].

Shangri-La has become synonymous with any earthly paradise, particularly a mythical Himalayan Buddhist utopia -- an enduringly happy land, isolated from the world.

Ancient Tibetan Buddhist scriptures mention Nghe-Beyul Khembalung [2], one of seven utopian beyuls which Tibetan Buddhists believe were established in the 9th century AD by Padmasambhava as hidden, sacred places of refuge for Buddhists during times of strife [3]. More

Tsunami warning issued after Taiwan shaker
Modern world cannot run without computer chips
(Bloomberg Television) April 2, 2024: A tsunami warning has been issued after an earthquake shook buildings in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan [a quasi-independent Buddhist island off the coast of China claimed by China and protected by the USA because it is the world's computer microchip manufacturing center upon which the world's technology runs along the southern end of the chain of islands that is the country of Japan], at about 7:58 am local Taiwan time Wednesday morning [4:58 pm Tuesday California time]. The temblor measured 7.4 (some reports say 7.5, which would make it ten times stronger) in magnitude, according to the US Geological Survey. Paul Allen reports. Trip to Tibet: "Living Buddha" on Dalai Lama

Jonathan Kaiman (LA Times, Jan. 9, 2017); Ashley Wells, CC Liu, Wisdom Quarterly
Zhada, a "living Buddha," had a peculiar answer when a reporter asked for his thoughts on the current Dalai Lama the 14th, a notorious adversary of China (Jonathan Kaiman/LA Times).

Strange journey through Tibetan China

ABA PREFECTURE, [Imperial] China - It was a road trip through one of China's most tightly controlled regions.

We drove uphill and deeper into the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, an area of south-western China's Sichuan province, adjacent to Tibet, where more than half the residents are Tibetan.

The Big Tulku: Dalai Lama
There were five of use foreign journalists, packed into two minibuses along with camera crews, interpreters, and scores of Chinese journalists, all seated should to should with the people in control: party officials from Sichuan and Shanghai. We passed scattered villages, high-altitude grasslands, and towering peaks.

Countless propaganda billboards, some many stories high, line the highway.

"Religious Belief Must Be Accordance With Socialism," said one. "Love the Country, Love the Party." Love Religion," said another. "Construct an Excellent Political Environment," said a third.

A Trip to Shanghai's Jade Buddha

(blogography.com)

Starting the day early to visit the Temple of the Jade Buddha turned out to be more of an adventure than I thought. I have been skydiving, diving with sharks, bungee jumping, race car driving. I have even been held up at knife-point twice and had many other adventures throughout my life.

But all pale in comparison to taking a taxi through the streets of Shanghai, China. It was especially disturbing considering the driver didn't know the location of the temple (despite being a famous landmark). He had a map in his face a good portion of the time.

By the time I got to the temple, I was ready to shave my head and become a monk so as not to have to go through that again. But the temple itself is sweet and well worth the dangerous journey to get there. Photos are not allowed of the actual Jade Buddha (which is exquisitely beautiful), but there is plenty to photograph.

I particularly like the little lion guardians everywhere around the temple, many with red "wish ribbons" tied around them. On the way out, I pass through the gift shop to get a wooden "Happy Buddha" statue to take back with me. Given my luck with taxis, I can use it. More>>
