Is consciousness an illusion? 5 experts explain
(Big Think) “If science aims to describe everything, how can it not describe the simple fact of our existence?”

On this episode of Dispatches, Kmele Foster speaks with the scientists, mathematicians, and spiritual leaders trying to do just that.

This video is an episode from @The-Well, a publication about ideas that inspire a life well-lived, created with the @JohnTempletonFoundation.

Here, Kmele Foster combines the perspectives of five different scientists, philosophers, and spiritual leaders to approach one of humanity’s most pressing questions: What is consciousness?

In the AI age, the question of consciousness is more prevalent than ever. Is every single thing in the universe self-aware? What does it actually mean to be conscious? Are our bodies really just a vessel for our thoughts?

Foster asks these and many more questions in the most thought-provoking episode yet. This is Dispatches from The Well. Featuring: Sir Roger Penrose, Christof Koch, Melanie Mitchell, Reid Hoffman, Swami Sarvapriyananda.

REVIEW: What awaits us? 'After Death' (film)

Eds., Wisdom Quarterly; Angel Studios, Premieres in L.A. on 10/26/23
This is a famous Buddhist thangka design about samsara, the Wheel of Becoming or Bhavachakra, cyclical rebirth as incessant oppression until one awakens from the illusory that was never real.

About Death
YOLO? No. How many lives are lived? Countless.
Opening this week is a movie about a most amazing subject: We don't die. We're alive now, and we'll be more alive when we're gone. This is the less real of the two places, a short reprieve, a chance to do much merit that would be useful in the hereafter. Near-death experiences change people, usually for the better, making experiencers much more aware of the purpose and value of this life. For most of us, not having a preview (except maybe through this movie), we squander this life, failing to appreciate what potential it held. Do it. Do something. Meditate. Study. Realize the Truth. YOLO? Ha, not even close.

WISDOM QUARTERLY REVIEW

Survival of Bodily Death (Dr. R. Moody)
This is an excellent documentary, with testimony by those who have directly experienced "death" (in the medical sense because all of them without fail, whether they had an ecstatic celestial experience or a dismal infernal experience or both, attests to the fact that WE DO NOT DIE at what we call "death."

Universally, a person who has a near death experience (NDE) loses the fear of death. Here we are in a sleepy illusion; by contrast (as the ancient Greek philosopher Plato noted in his discussion of forms and his Allegory of the Cave) there is the wakeful real thing.

The choice of a name for the movie is the oddest thing, as this documentary is all about Life after Life, as Dr. Raymond Moody, who also appears in the movie, named his famous book.

We do not die then become alive again, as many people misinterpret Buddhism and the other Dharmic religions to teach. Buddhist teachings, particularly in the Abhidhamma, state that the next life commences immediately, instantaneously, at the very next moment.

Excellent Buddhist explanation by Western monk
What causes confusion is talk of the bardo or "intermediary state" between this life and a future life. What happens in between is still life, life that began right after the last moment of the previous life. (This may be understood as one ego passing, the gandhabba or transitional-being (becoming) having experiences then another rebirth of longer duration:

If two lives are long and the one in between is short, this might lead to the confusion that one was "dead" in between "life" and the "afterlife" when, clearly, one was alive all along for all three lives, as well as the many lives that came before and the many to come hereafter.

We are dying at every moment, but what is reborn in the very next sub-moment is nearly identical, so we don't notice the falling away in rapid succession. The rearising moment after moment comes to seem like a "being" is living when in fact a "becoming" is becoming, passing away, rearising, passing away, rearising...

When there's a stark break in circumstances -- a new body, a new name, new circumstances, new characteristics, all born of karma -- one might well conclude that one has died and been reborn, never noticing that that was happening all along.

This is the meaning of impermanence (anicca), not that one will eventually die and pass away but rather that what is conceived of as "self" is passing away all of the time, incessantly without respite until we awaken from the illusion (delusion), arrive at enlightenment, and experience nirvana.

Life after life after life...
The Evidence Under Hypnosis
Life is not forever because one (the Five Aggregates clung to as self) will one day die but because whatever is conceived of as self is passing away, passing away, passing away... Nirvana is the deathless state (amata) when this is no longer the case: With the end of rebirth, all suffering is ended, and death is ended.

Having a Buddhist on or even religious scholars representing many traditions would have added great dimension to this film, but as was stated, this is largely a Christian film all about the science, the objective facts lined up alongside the story of the personal experiences of NDE characters.

Dr. Helen Wambach, Ph.D.
Adding in the scientific data gathered by researcher Dr. Helen Wambach, Ph.D., from her detailed scientific studies presented in the book Reliving Past Lives may have done wonders for bringing together the subjective accounts and the objective facts. He gathered and documented more objective data than any of the doctors in the film, although she gathered data through tens of thousands of hypnotic regression sessions (and progressions into future lives) and the film is dealing with NDE accounts.

Along with the teachings of Christianity, which is the driving force of this movie and its makers, a lone Buddhist subject tells his story of suicide, a negative NDE that turns positive, and being resuscitated and glad to be on earth in the hospital. His mother, a nurse, saw him take his own life, prompted by an unclean spirit, and she is at his bedside crying when he returns to life.

Karma and Rebirth (Appleton)
He ends up becoming a U.S. military chaplain, talking about God and a merciful son listening to soldiers' tales of war atrocities and their deep remorse for unskillful karma, no longer referring to a Buddhism he never really studied or understood when he was a Korean Mahayana Buddhist immigrant becoming an American rocker, drug abuser, and suicide victim.

(Suicide may be self-victimhood, but Chaplain Kevin speaks of an unwholesome spirit who tricked him, prompted him, and directed him on how to take his own life. He was tricked by being offered a deal that if he killed himself, that old man spirit would get his time in hell reduced by 50,000 years, just like a lawyer making big claims for some ulterior motive).

Most of the talking heads, according to the screen notes under their names, end up being best-selling authors, who wrote out their stories in gratitude for getting more time to live. They are not simply average citizens chosen at random to be on screen.

RAVE: An Anthem for War (video)

[Mystic Wisdom] Quarterly

() Electroacoustic piece of music set to the poem "Anthem for Doomed Youth" by the late British poet-soldier Wilfred Salter Owen.

What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?
Only the monstrous anger of the guns.
Only the stuttering rifles' rapid rattle
Can patter out their hasty orisons.

No mockeries now for them; no prayers nor bells;
Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs,
The shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells;
And bugles calling for them from sad shires.

What candles may be held to speed them all?
Not in the hands of boys, but in their eyes
Shall shine the holy glimmers of good-byes.

The pallor of girls' brows shall be their pall;
Their flowers the tenderness of patient minds,
And each slow dusk a drawing-down of blinds.

Owen died on the battlefield in WW I after writing "Dulce Et Decorum Est" (ironically "It is Sweet and Fitting [to Die for Patriotism]"). He was a great loss to humanity in light of what Europe might have produced if the youth of that generation had not been sacrificed.

Day of the Dead
Dev and Seven, Wisdom Quarterly
Candy Eye (lilminx16/deviantart.net)
While the world is at war, promoted and prosecuted by the US military-industrial complex like MLK Jr. recognized, all I can do is dance to EDM. And the Mexican "Day of the Dead" (the Latin American Halloween) is being celebrated with a rave.

Next to the old Occupy Wall Street encampment under the occupied Los Angeles skyline, next to China Town, we will gather as in years before. I'm still in search of a peak experience worthy of a Buddhist monastic or the Buddha himself. When the lights are going off and the DJ is dropping a big fat beat, I'm almost there. Almost.

Back in the day
If I leave my body, will I see the larger Spirit World, the realm of devas.? If I dance so hard I can no longer feel my feet, will I elevate into spatial dimensions beyond our limiting atmosphere? In meditation, I close my eyes and see subtle light. I feel the unseen and touch emptiness. Sometimes Buddhism is the only thing that make sense, you know?

The Day of the Dead, when ancestors are honored and there is time to reassess and appreciate current relations, we will be with all our brothers and sisters under the Moon. But somewhere I know war is being fought for corporations and nothing else, no national security, no higher ideals. They're monsters, my brother among them. What can I do but dance, celebrating the Five Precepts while others are negligent, holding my head under a twice-colored cloud and focusing my mind.

The Buddha said, "Not having been, they come to be; once having been, they cease." What was he talking about? Everything, all conditioned-things. There is that Farther Shore beyond the beyond. We wish the killing would stop and the loving start so we could all arrive there. "Gone, gone, gone beyond, gone altogether beyond, O, what an awakening, yes!"

"Gate, gate, paragate, parasamgate bodhi swaha!" is the epitome of the Heart Sutra.

Britney Spears' Out of Body Experience (video)

Wisdom Quarterly

Get More: 2011 VMA, Music

Britney Spears, while sitting in the front row of the VMAs on Sunday in Los Angeles, had her life-in-music flash before her. Note the shamanistic "mushroom" theme.* Spears was then groped on stage by "Jo Calderone" (aka Lady Gaga), who tried to kiss her. America's sweetheart, the fizzling pop diva, whose latest album is actually her best seller, is getting a boost after years of drugs, ill-advised marriages, and manufactured drama galore. Nun rumors, head shaving, Kevin Federline, it is amazing the world has still not had enough of Brit-Brit. Her beauty, fame, and longevity are no accident. Not only do they make money for many behind the scenes who then protect and promote her public image, but her past life wholesome karma (the Four Bases of Popularity) supports her experience, even as she exhausts her store of merit to no future advantage.
Britney accepts more accolades on stage with manly Lady Gaga (Reuters/dailymail.co.uk)
  • What wholesome actions (kusala karma) is considered the bases of popularity? Generosity, hospitality, kind speech, and impartiality. These are mentioned, but not elaborated, most famously in the Buddha's "Advice to Householders" (Sigalovada Sutra, DN 31).
*Blonde shamans, like the Scandinavian Sami, depend on mushrooms for visions (BBC).

Astral Projection (video instructions)

WARNING: First learn meditation, lucid dreaming, and dream-recall.

(Yallno22) Astral projection is the ultimate self-discovery experience to confront, deal with, and control fears in desires. By learning to astral project, we can learn many things about ourselves, while unlearning many things we previously thought were true. This leads us to the realization that our physical bodies are only a part of our entire selves. Consciousness is interdependent but separable from the body.

"Don't believe, experience it."

There is more to our existence than meets the eye. In our limited awareness, the reality we live and breathe on Earth -- with beautiful landscapes, mountains, rivers, streams, animals, and insects -- can be compared with the petals on a flower. What we see is not the whole flower but only a part. This is because humans have lost touch with the use of our own minds. We conclude, erroneously, that the physical world is the only reality there is. We believe that our life as an individual is only the flesh of the body. This leads us to conclude that the physical world is solid and real because our senses tell him us so. It "feels" solid and real.

The mind has abilities that go beyond the five senses and therefore beyond the physical world. The petal of the flower we now experience is the material world, the grosser physical plane of existence. It has a specific vibration. Similarly, all creatures on this level vibrate at the same rate. Because of this, regardless of where we go on this level, all things take on the appearance of being solid, material objects. Just as the colors of the rainbow are the effect of different vibration rates of light and notes of a piano are different vibrations of strings, so the entire universe contains various forms of light and octaves, all of which are varying rates of vibration. These universal harmonics comprise the different levels of existence.

The Earth we live on is only one of many dimensions. There are other spheres described as being above or below us. Actually, they are not really "above" or "below" us. Rather, they are at all times all around us permeating all things.

Astral projection allows us to discover that the people and objects existing on other realms are just as solid and real as any object on Earth's familiar terrain. If we happen to be on another level looking back "down" on this terrain, we see an Earth that is not solid.

Right now at every instant, we are living, coexisting, and walking through people and objects in other dimensions! When a person astral projects, that person is able to see these other frontiers. When we were born into this world, our karma originated a physical body. This body is able to sense the vibratory rates here to carry out our duties. Astral projection allows us to project "out of the body" and into the next plane of existence, which is the Astral Plane. When we do this, we are in another body, which is called the "astral body." We already possess this astral body, just as all other people, animals, creatures and everything on earth possess an astral body.

There are, for example, remarkable out-of-body (OBE) and near-death-experience (NDE) cases from people who have been blind and deaf since birth. They are able to see sights and hear sounds and experience the worlds in real time. Try it.

The Gazing Technique

This is done when going to bed. You need something to focus on. If they are within view, use the Moon, the stars, a crystal ball, a favorite doll, because all of these work well. Use whatever you like (but not a candle or anything that burns since this method involves the body falling asleep, and that would mean leaving a dangerous object unattended).

Place the object within view and lie down in bed.

Stare at the object as you doze off. (The first few times may be frustrating, because you may simply fall asleep and that's it). But after a few attempts, this method worked for me.

Keep staring at the object. As eyelids become heavy, keep staring. Eventually the eyes will close, but you will still be able to see the object. You will still be staring at the object.

Sit up or stand up, and don't be surprised to see your physical body sleeping peacefully in your bed. Then go where you like careful to protect the silver strand connecting your physical and astral bodies.

To protect yourself from inimical spiritual forces, shroud yourself in protective white light or call on help and protection from good forces before beginning. For complete safety instructions and more techniques, contact the:

American Couple Go Green-Extreme

"Travel, my son, giveth experience, and experience wisdom, and wisdom every good thing: the sword cannot gleam in the field of victory till it leaves the scabbard, nor the pen discourse of eloquence and poetry, till it is taken from the kullumdan"

-- Asiatic Journal of British India

American couple takes green to new level @ Yahoo! Video

The Buddha enjoined male and female recluses to be wanderers. Not only was it a frugal and environmental way to live, many spiritual benefits come to the practitioner. Samanas ("wandering ascetics") were going against the grain, in the opposite direction of settled, temple-bound brahmin priests.
.
Bhikkhus ("monks") and bhikkhunis ("nuns") live dependent on discarded cloth sown together and recycled as robes and alms gathered the way "a bee gathers nectar -- without harm to flowers in the collection process," that is, without begging or insinuating. The benefits of the mendicant path were never limited to monastics, as this environmentally-conscious American couple are proving.

Mystery Religions

The Buddha passed into final nirvana after eating mushrooms. Christians believe Adam and Eve, the first humans, were forbidden to eat from a mysterious "tree of knowledge." Could the connection to mushrooms go deeper?
Z
In Plaincourault, France, there is a mural showing the "Tree of Knowledge" with a snake wrapped around it, and Eve talking to the snake. The Tree is a Fly Agaric mushroom.
-
The Fly Agaric is, of course, a hallucinogenic mushroom. John Allegro, who translated the Dead Sea Scrolls, went as far as to suggest that the early Christians used it as a sacrament. Gordon Wasson wrote a book called Soma: Divine Mushroom of Immortality, identifying the Fly Agaric with Soma, the sacrament of the Hindus, meaning “body” (which gives us the word somatic).
-
Andrija Puharich also wrote a book about Fly Agaric, called the Sacred Mushroom: Key to the Door of Eternity. A summary of all this can be found in James Arthur’s book, Mushrooms and Mankind.
-
Shamanic themes formed the Osiris cult, then found their way into other Mystery religions, such as the Greek Mysteries of Dionysus at Eleusis, Attis in Asia Minor, Bacchus in Italy, and Mithras in Persia. They all involved a voluntary death, a flight from the body, a descent into the underworld, an ascent to heaven, and a resurrection. They also had a sacrament, which later came to be wine, but in the Mysteries of Mithras “developed from older rites which used consecrated bread and water mixed with the intoxicating juice of a psychedelic plant called Haoma.”
-
The various cultures all adapted one of their gods to take on the role of the resurrecting god-man. But when a Jewish sect wanted their own Mystery religion, it was a bit more difficult, since they only had one god, so they based the Mysteries around the figure of the Jewish messiah.
-
Every year at Christmas, we re-enact our own Mystery Play, which has survived to remind us of all this. December 25th used to be Winter Solstice. It is the birthday of the god-man Osiris/Dionysus/Mithras/Jesus, who, as Osiris, represents the polar axis (Djed) and its 72 x 360-year precession cycle.
-
We pretend that a wise old elf called Santa Claus flies through the sky, pulled by reindeer, (having frozen time, so he can visit everyone), and enters via the chimney. He leaves traditionally wrapped red and white gifts under a pine tree that we have brought indoors, and in socks hanging over the fireplace. Then he flies off to the North Pole.
-
In Siberia, since time immemorial, around Winter Solstice shamans have gathered the red and white Fly Agaric mushrooms from under the very same pine trees we put in our living rooms, and distributed them from a sack. In Siberia, the entrances to homes are in the roof, and double as a smoke outlet, so they really are entering via the chimney! The mushrooms are left to dry out by hanging them over the hearth. The mushrooms have to be gathered quickly, because the reindeer love them. However, it is a fact that the psychoactive ingredient can be recycled several times, and unpleasant side effects such as vomiting, are thus avoided. It is also a fact that the reindeer love eating yellow snow! If a reindeer herder wants to gather his herd, he only has to urinate, and they all come running.
-
That is why the reindeer all fly along in frozen time. Even the reindeer names reinforce the encoding. The tree also represents the Axis Mundi, with the candles or lights and baubles representing stars, and the star on the top representing the Pole Star. It is usually a 5-pointed star, and therefore encodes 72, since a pentacle is formed by 5 x 72-degree angles. Santa lives at the North Pole, which encodes the out of body experience as destination, and Santa’s helpers, the elves, are either the fourth-dimensional astral beings encountered, or even our higher dimensional selves, also represented by the angel/fairy on the tree.
-
What does it all mean?
-
As I said just now, Jenkins has shown that the Maya were tracking precession with the Long Count calendar, but rather than the Vernal Equinox, they were tracking the movement of stars (the Milky Way) against the Winter Solstice. He also showed that the Mayan 13-baktun cycle (5,125 years), ends on Winter Solstice 2012. What is more, the Maya used to take hallucinogens, including toad venom, and psilocybin mushrooms. Jenkins has also found some evidence they may have taken Amanita muscaria (Fly Agaric), but they mainly used the psilocybin mushroom.
-
This is the same mushroom that Terence & Dennis McKenna took, when they were “informed by an elf-troupe that the laws of physics would change in 2012,” and conceived the Timewave Zero concept – a hierarchy of waves governing all change in the universe, and terminating in 2012, encoded in the Chinese I Ching oracle. The psilocybin mushrooms contain DMT, which is also produced in the pineal gland, or third eye, which is shaped LIKE A PINE-CONE.
-
Some have suggested that the Egyptians also took psilocybin mushrooms. They did take the blue water lily, which Paul Devereux says in The Long Trip: A Prehistory of Psychedelia “was the form in which Isis restored the murdered Osiris, and was thus a symbol for him.” The lily has hypnotic effects.
-
Devereux says the Egyptians also had access to opium (which gave Errol Flynn an out of body experience), and khat, which produces a dream-like state. In the Americas, a different species of tobacco was taken in huge doses. A near-lethal dose can give an out of body experience. We have heard recently of the “cocaine mummies” found in Egypt – well, they also contained large amounts of nicotine – another plant that should not have been in Egypt – which was very upsetting for Egyptologists.
-
Devereux has shown that most of these power plants can cause out of body experiences when taken in large enough doses or in combination (though very dangerous or unpleasant in some cases), and that they have been used for just such purposes for thousands of years. In another book – Shamanism and the Mystery Lines – Devereux makes a very strong case that these magical shamanic flights were associated with the alignments we know as Ley Lines, where ancient barrows, standing stones, stone circles, and even pre-reformation churches (built on sacred sites), are aligned in straight lines.
-
Will the “Galactic Winter Solstice” in 2012 allow a mass out-of-body experience? Will celestial and terrestrial grids align? Will a passing celestial body re-align the Axis Mundi to its pre-fall state? Or maybe the falling geomagnetic field will lead to a magnetic reversal, and switch our polarity (out of body researcher Robert Monroe found that the body’s polarity reverses while out of body).
-
