There's a total solar eclipse, the first in 27 years for Europe, over Greenland (technically part of Denmark), Iceland, and Spain -- a shadow going in the wrong direction if the Earth were spinning from west (Greenland) to Spain (east). It will be visible to millions on Earth. Will the world end? - YES, but not tomorrow.
Nearly 2 1⁄2 years after space enthusiasts on Earth last saw a total solar eclipse, another is on its way, allowing U.S. viewers to see a partial glimpse of the phenomenon, with other parts of the world like Spain seeing totality.
This year’s eclipse falls on the morning of Aug. 12, 2026, allowing people across most of Europe and in northwestern Africa to see the moon something (possibly Rahu) cover or "eclipse" most of the sun.
For most people, including those in the United States, the moon will not completely block the sun, making this year’s eclipse partial, according to NASA's website.
The lucky people in the USA able to view the partial solar eclipse this year include those from Alaska to North Carolina. People in [the small capital country of] Washington, DC [the ruling district of the larger country's original imperial-colonial name, Columbia], will also be able to see it.
In Alaska, the eclipse will happen in the morning, while those in the northern U.S. will be able to see it between midday and midafternoon, NASA said. People near the center of the eclipse path in Greenland, Russia or the North Atlantic will experience the eclipse for a slightly longer period; most people will see the sun eclipsed for less than two minutes, according to NASA. Sixth, if an astrologer can go forward in time to say what's going to happen, okay, maybe that's projection, expectancy, confirmation bias, wish fulfillment, unconscious influence, but if one can go back in time to declare what has happened to you and when, that's a lot harder to explain; the chart knows something.

Six planets are going to align in the sky. Here's how to see them
(The Secrets of the Universe) May 26, 2024, Planet Parade: Look towards the east just before sunrise and witness an amazing sight: a parade of six planets, with three visible to the naked eye. In early June, Jupiter, Mercury, Uranus, Mars, Neptune, and Saturn will align in a straight line near a thin crescent moon.
Remarkably, all seven other planets are going to be in the same part of the sky in the first week of June, and we have an opportunity to catch glimpse of a few of them. However, plan ahead. Timing is crucial as are dark skies and a clear view of the horizon.

A series of solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have created dazzling auroras that may be seen as far south as Alabama and Northern California but could also disrupt communications on Earth tonight and over the weekend.
Scientists are warning an increase in solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun have the potential to disrupt communication on Earth into the weekend.
Solar flares can affect communications and GPS almost immediately because they disrupt Earth’s ionosphere, part of the upper atmosphere.
Energetic particles released by the sun can also disrupt electronics on spacecraft and affect astronauts without proper protection within 20 minutes to several hours.
An unusually strong solar storm hitting Earth could produce northern lights in the U.S. this weekend and potentially disrupt power and communications. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued a rare severe geomagnetic storm warning when a solar outburst reached Earth on Friday afternoon, hours sooner than anticipated.
The effects were due to last through the weekend and possibly into next week. The storm could produce northern lights as far south in the U.S. as Alabama and Northern California, according to NOAA.
But it was hard to predict, and experts stressed it would not be the dramatic curtains of color normally associated with the northern lights, but more like splashes of greenish hues.

We recently visited the Griffith Observatory above Hollywood Land. Beware the mountain lion, the puma P-42. He's a man eater that prefers children and cats but might slink up on any unsuspecting source of blood and flesh. Venus was bright in the western sky. The old telescope dome opened, and we saw it with a halo of colors around it. Just under it was the Hollywood sign drenched in a smoggy vog-like marine layer. Could the volcano on the big island of Hawaii spew out anything that made it all the way over here? Probably not, but it sure looked like it. The observatory is open daily except Mondays.
If it's clear outside tonight (Wednesday, Dec. 13th) and Thursday morning (Dec. 14th) before dawn, be sure to go outdoors.
One of the year's top meteor showers, the Geminids, will peak, with rates as high as one or two meteors per minute at around 10:00 pm your local time (wherever you're observing from). However, the show will start around 7:00 pm local time, according to the magazine Sky & Telescope.
What's up there? Why don't the space-devas make themselves known when they visit?
But if you can't make it out, or if skies are gloomy, you can also watch a Geminids webcast here on Space.com courtesy of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama starting at about 6:00 pm EST (2300 GMT) on Dec. 13th.

Hidden in Plain Sight: Researchers Find Galaxy-Scale Bubbles Extending from the Milky Way John Matson (Scientific American, Nov. 15, 2010) An analysis of public data from a NASA satellite turns up massive galactic structures. A group of astrophysicists has located two massive bubbles of plasma, each extending tens of thousands of light-years, emitting high-energy radiation above and below the plane of the galaxy.
The researchers found the structures in publicly released data from NASA's Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope, which was launched in 2008 to investigate sources of extremely energetic photons — namely, gamma rays, which have higher frequencies than x-rays.
From its orbital perch hundreds of kilometers above Earth's surface, Fermi has charted the location of gamma-ray sources with its Large Area Telescope (LAT). But just where the gamma rays originate is not always clear; the foreground of Fermi's view is clouded with emission from events such as cosmic rays striking dust in the Milky Way's disk.
To get a better picture of the gamma-ray environment, Douglas Finkbeiner of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and his colleagues carefully subtracted those sources based on maps showing locations of cosmic dust, models of the galactic disk, and known emitters of gamma rays, such as active black holes in other galaxies. (SPACE.COM) To commemorate almost two decades of photographing the wonders of the universe, the Hubble Space Telescope captured an image of a peculiar group of interacting galaxies that contains a "cosmic fountain" of stars, gas, and dust that stretches about 100,000 light years. Over the past 19 years, Hubble has taken many images of galactic collisions and close encounters.
The new image of a trio of galaxies, called Arp 194, looks as if one of the galaxies has sprung a leak. The bright blue streamer seen in the image is really a stretched spiral arm full of newborn blue stars.
