Avalokitesvara Enlightenment Day (8/1)
| Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva |
It is unknown which day it will be because it is officially posted as "Sunday, 8/1, at 10:00 am, but Sunday is 8/2, Aug. 2, 2026. So maybe it starts on Saturday at 10 and culminates with noontime offerings at 12 the next day? Call the temple for proper details.
- Hsi Lai (Coming West) Temple
- 3456 Glenmark Drive (near 60 Fwy)
- Hacienda Heights, LA, CA 91745
- info@ibps.org, (626) 961-9697
It will be located in the Hsi Lai Temple main shrine at the top of the steps near the giant incense cauldron that looks like the Liberty Bell. Fortunately, for the Fo Guang Shan (lit. "Buddha's* Light Mountain") Movement Buddhists of the world and others, there will be a Livestream (live from Los Angeles):
Buddha's Light Mountain
Fo Guang Shan (FGS, Chinese 佛光山, Pinyin Fó guāng shān, lit. "Buddha's Light Mountain") is an international Chinese Mahāyāna Buddhist organization and monastic order. It is based in Taiwan and practices Humanistic Buddhism, whose roots are traced to the Linji School of Chan Buddhism.
The headquarters, Fo Guang Shan Monastery, is located in Dashu District, Kaohsiung, Buddhist Taiwan, and is the largest Buddhist monastery in the island country .
[Of course, mainland China lays claim to Taiwan as an integral part of the PRC (People's Republic of China) just as it insists that Bon/Vajrayana Buddhist Tibet and similarly oppressed Muslim Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in the northwest are part and parcel of the nominally communist actively capitalist post-kingdom].
The organization is also one of the largest charity organizations in Taiwan. Its counterpart for laypeople is known as the Buddha's Light International Association. Founded in 1967 by Hsing Yun, the order promotes Humanistic Buddhism and is known for its efforts in the modernization of Chinese Buddhism.
The modernist order is famous for its use of technology, and its temples are often furnished with the latest equipment [1, 2]. Hsing Yun's stated position for Fo Guang Shan is that it is an "amalgam of all Eight Schools of Chinese Buddhism." More
- (*Sadly, while it sounds like one big, united Buddhist family, in fact the Buddha in the title refers to the "Cosmic Buddha" Amitabha, as in Amitofu, not the historical one from Earth, who is lovingly called the Sage of Scythian Shakya/Saka Clan, Shakyamuni, Siddhartha Gautama)

Dalai Lama says he's reincarnated Goddess

But many will choose the institution, as most of Tibet (a massive region a quarter to half the size of China) did in centuries past. But the real practice of Buddhism involves moving beyond comfortable institutions, rituals, and dogma and onto the mat for purification of heart/mind and view. That's when the real progress begins. Few are probably ready for that, so let's get back to Tibetan politics with the pope-king who is now just "pope" of one Tibetan school or sect, the Gelug Yellow Hats.

The Deleted Goddess of Christianity

The deleted Goddess of Christianity
| Beloved, nurturing Goddess Asherah |
In 1975, archeologists discovered pottery inscriptions at Kuntillet Ajrud in the Sinai Peninsula that shouldn't exist according to traditional biblical history.
![]() |
| Greece's Athena (Pallas) |
Written in ancient Hebrew and dating to the 8th century BCE, the inscriptions read: "I bless you by Yahweh of Samaria and by his Asherah." His Asherah. That possessive pronoun changed everything.
Additional discoveries at Khirbet el-Qom confirmed what biblical editors had tried to erase: Israel's God had a wife, and she was worshipped in Solomon's Temple itself until King Josiah violently purged her cult around 622 BCE.
But Asherah's erasure was only the beginning. This documentary explores how the divine feminine was systematically removed from Christianity across seven critical chapters:

Chapter 2: Asherah and the Forgotten Consort of Yahweh

Archeological evidence from ancient Israel reveals the explosive truth: Yahweh's divine consort was worshipped for centuries before reformers violently erased her.
The Bible itself preserves evidence of her destruction. We can examine pottery shards, temple artifacts, and biblical texts to prove that monotheism wasn't always so mono. [In fact, it is clear the whole area and the Jews in particular were polytheists.]

What happened at Peace Mandala 2025?
An amazing Buddhist spectacle unfolded at the World Peace Gathering in a fancy hotel across from Disneyland in downtown Anaheim on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025. From 4:00 to 9:00 pm floors of the Anaheim Convention Center were transformed into a kind of Mahayana Buddhist Pure Land, with 300 monastics from all traditions and countries in the Southland and 1,700 or so lay participants.
We filed into a color filled hall in the diagonal, our bodies forming a mandala (sacred geometrical pattern in the Mahayana/Vedic Hindu sense) for a kind of Catholic-style repentance ceremony, inviting peace and countless light beings (devas, brahmas, bodhisattvas, mahasattvas, and buddhas).
No photography or video footage was allowed by participants, though there were official cameras on the perimeter and some people couldn't help but pull out their cellphones for a quick snap or two. However, here is old footage of this event from 2013 and 2018 before it evolved into the spectacle we experienced for Earth Day 2025.
World Peace Gathering 2013: Mandala Ceremony (2 of 4)
What happened in 2025?
Wisdom Quarterly 2025
It started off as a normal convention of Buddhists at a convention center in OC. But it became profound with Vedic/Brahminical magic -- mantras and mudras, intentions and emotions. It made an impression.
First, everything was color coded. There are Sanskrit letter, bija mantras or "seed sounds" we were uttering once in formation. When 1,700 get in a room with 300 monastics, whatever happens is bound to be special.
- There is the Soka Gakkai Buddhist cult, and they have that chant for material manifestation that may encourage greed in the name of "spirituality." One could understand how nice it might be to chant a repetitive set of meaningful sounds one doesn't know the meaning of. Somethings are only meant to be vibrational utterances, not sensible concepts. But there were translations, too. It was not mindless.
One would have wished to be videotaping the goings on so the outside world could see it. Once, at the Lu Mountain Chan Monastery in Rosemead, San Gabriel Valley, Los Angeles County, California, there was the ordinary sermon by Chan Master, as he had us call him. Then a short meditation. Then a great vegan meal of homemade Vietnamese delicacies by elderly expert cooks in the temple kitchen. Then socializing and talking, people hanging around and eventually dispersing.
Wanting to get some real meditation in, something silent and unguided, free of visualizations and interruptions, I went into the empty meditation hall and took a seat. To my surprise, people came back in dressed in robes, the same people from the morning sit. But there was no special occasion announced.
They began to chant and do hand movements (mudras) with a secret book they had, turning the pages. It went on and on. I remained still and silent, going unnoticed. That was their mistake, which they tried to play off when I began to ask questions afterward. I had seen the secret ceremony, the ritual Hindu-influenced Mahayana practices that really aided their Chan ("Zen") and samadhi, surrounded by countless alleged sariras (sacred relic beads and crematory remains). This was like that, and it may go on in every Vietnamese Zen temple in the county. The OC is full of them, particularly in the small city of Westminster.
I picked up a color diagram explaining the five elemental colors (white at the perimeter, yellow, blue, red, green, and white at the center). There is a siddham or character that looks like a four (4) in Japanese/Chinese script interpreting Sanskrit. A Vietnamese speaker is needed to decipher the explanation: Quan he giua pham tru ca the va tap the khi tu tap phap Lien Hoa Thu Nhan va Mandala Lien Hoa, which may not make sense without the diacritical marks.

A color booklet with pictures of lotuses titled So tay Lien Hoa Bo Tat ("Lotus Bodhisattva Handbook"), Ban Cap Nhat 2025, on the cover also came to hand.

When can we expect Female Messiah?
Female Messiah? What Church tried to erase
The Gospel of Mary, attributed to Mary Magdalene, offers a unique perspective on salvation through self-knowledge and inner exploration. Contrary to traditional Christian teachings, this ancient text challenges the concept of sin, framing it as an illusion tied to the physical body. It reveals a vision of spiritual authority where wisdom is accessible beyond institutional limits. Rooted in Gnosticism, this work highlights the diverse landscape of early Christianity, advocating for a personal connection with the divine.
Is there a Buddhist Messiah? Is it Maitreya?

Is the Blessed Virgin Mary Chinese Guanyin?
Marco Lazzarotti, Aug. 2023
![]() |
| Virgin/Guanyin in Chinese dress (researchgate.net) |
...[The] most usual and popular representation of this Goddess is a beautiful and gracious woman, who holds a child in her arms [Maya and Siddhartha rather than Mary and Jesus] and wears a rosary [mala] around her neck. This iconography has been reused in order to paint the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary at a point where it is hard sometimes to distinguish between the two figures (Figures 3a and 3b).
My point is not that Catholic people consider the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Christian reference of Guanyin [Kwan Yin, the Mahayana Buddhist "Goddess of Compassion"], but I want to stress that, when honoring the "new" supernatural figure, Taiwanese Catholics still maintain the forms they learned through their involvement in popular religious practices from an early age, which are linked to the cultural system they inhabit. What is Mahayana Buddhism? (video)
The Ancient Teachings of Mahayana Buddhism
The Buddha is believed to have passed away (attained to final nirvana) around 400 BCE. The early texts based on the Buddha's direct teachings, known as the Pāli canon, are the texts Theravāda Buddhism uses as its foundation.
- Theravada means the "teachings" (vada) of the "elders" (theras), who were the immediate first enlightened disciples of the historical Buddha. They heard, recited, memorized, and handed down the Buddha's original words and teachings, the monastic rules and back stories for each, the sutras (discourses) and sayings. The Buddha spoke Magadhi (the language of King Bimbisara's Kingdom of Magadha), and this is Pali, the lingua franca of the area. The Brahmins were the only ones who spoke Sanskrit, the language of the Vedas and later Hinduism. And this is why Mahayana Buddhism is Buddhism in Sanskrit, itself being the Brahminical interpretation of Buddhism slanted and shifted to accord with Brahmanism (the views and religion of Brahmin priests), which was later adopted by Hinduism as its foundation in the Vedas.
It is believed that the later Mahayana tradition developed out of this early form of firsthand Theravāda Buddhism sometime between the 1st century BCE and the 1st century CE. It is by bar the bigger school (90% of Buddhists), encompassing all kinds of Buddhisms apart from those in South and Southeast Asia.
What were the differences, and why did Mahāyāna Buddhism diverge/emerge? Mahāyāna Buddhism was a response to what was perceived as the elitism of the Theravāda tradition, particularly Theravāda Buddhism’s strong monastic tradition, which focused on intensive meditation, morality, monastic rules, and ascetic practices rather than lay people and their daily concerns.
Mahāyāna Buddhism sought to make the Teachings of the Buddha more accessible to ordinary people, not just something for monks and nuns.
It might best be understood as a school of Buddhism that teaches that all people have the capacity to awaken and realize the nature of reality whether in robes or lay clothes.
Mahāyāna Buddhism also tries to emphasize compassion (even over wisdom), a key aspect of the Buddha’s path to enlightenment.
This is illustrated by the Mahāyāna ideal of the bodhisattva, or a "being bent on enlightenment" like the Buddha before he became the Buddha (when he was still the Bodhisattva), who postponed his entrance into final nirvana (complete liberation from all rebirth and suffering) to teach and offer salvation to all living beings -- not just humans, but devas, and animals as well!
- The Dharma, what the Buddha taught, was actually most helpful to devas, judging by how many quickly realized the Truth gained liberation. They admired and listened to the Buddha, who was called "the teacher of gods and men" (the "gods" being devas of various orders and planes of existence and the "men" being humans of all kinds). It is easier for devas to gain insight (clear seeing) and liberation (moksha) if only they can pull themselves away from their pleasurable pursuits and parties and plans and realize that what the Buddha is saying applies to them, too.
Important, too, is that while Theravāda Buddhism recognizes only the Pāli language texts and suttas (sutras) as its official canon, regarding this massive collection as "the true teachings of the historical Buddha," Mahāyāna Buddhism includes texts called agamas and many apocryphal writings and later "sutras" as also the true teachings of, if not this Buddha, other Cosmic Buddhas (particularly Amitabha).
Many of these apocryphal texts are known to have come into existence long after the life of the historical Buddha but are still called the recorded words of the Buddha [which they are not but which may be what he allegedly really meant]. Mahayana constitutes later developments rather than original Teachings.

Kishitigarbha saves (beings from hell)
Kṣitigarbha is in Sanskrit Wylie sa yi snying po.This name translates as "Earth Treasury," "Earth Store," "Earth Matrix," or "Earth Womb."
He is a bodhisattva primarily revered in East Asian Buddhism (rather than the Theravada of South and Southeast Asia) and usually depicted as a Buddhist monk.
Overview

| Kwan Yin is the Bodhisattva of Compassion |
At the pre-Tang dynasty grottos in Dunhuang and Longmen, this figure is depicted in classical bodhisattva form. After the Tang, he became increasingly depicted as a monk, carrying Buddhist meditation prayer beads and a staff.

| Goddess of Compassion |
Moreover, he made a vow refrain from achieving supreme buddhahood until all hells are emptied. He is therefore often regarded as the bodhisattva of hell-beings, as well as the guardian of children and patron deity of deceased children and aborted fetuses in Japanese culture.
Usually depicted as a monk with a halo around his shaved head, he carries a staff to force open the gates of hell and a wish-fulfilling jewel to light up the darkness.
