Sexual allegations against Hindu Swami Kripalu Maharaj

Temple no longer molesting since last conviction?

In the 1990s, Kripalu Maharaj* was arrested for allegedly raping two young girls. In the end, the prosecution was dismissed due to insufficient evidence [29].

In 2010, Kripalu Maharaj was arrested again in Trinidad and Tobago after a 22-year-old Guyanese woman alleged that he raped her after going to seek spiritual assistance from Kripalu in one of his religious centers. The case was ultimately dropped due to insufficient evidence [30].

One of Kripalu's disciples, Guru Prakashanand Saraswati, was convicted of groping two young girls in his ashram in Hays County, Texas.

A 12-person jury declared Saraswati guilty of 20 counts of child molestation, after 50 minutes deliberation, on Friday March 4th, 2011 [31].

Although convicted, child molester Saraswati was released after CEO Peter Spiegel (TV infomercial entrepreneur, Barsana Dham officer, and founder of the California consumer tech company Ideal Living (ideal Living.com) "put up a $1 million cash bond."

Devotee Peter Spiegel had previously "signed a $10 million indemnity agreement in October 2008."

According to the Austin American-Statesman, Peter Spiegel's attorney Barry Hitchings said that he would contest the agreement.

Peter Spiegel said that he was one of about 40 Hindu followers present for a Sunday dinner at Marsha Kent's home with sex Guru Saraswati the evening before the guru escaped the USA and went on the lam.

Peter Spiegel said, "It never entered my mind that he wouldn't come" to his own trial on multiple child molestation charges [32, 33].

As part of the bond condition, Guru Saraswati was barred from entering the Barsana Dham temple. After Guru Saraswati fled the country, Deputy U.S. Marshal Robert Marcum alleged that members of JKP aided Guru Saraswati in his escape and relocation to India.

• In 2007, three former residents of Barsana Dham (aka Radha Madhav Dham), aged between 27 and 30 years old [33], told Hays County, Texas police that they had been sexually abused at the ashram when they were as young as 12 by Guru Saraswati, who was then arrested on April 25, 2008. A 12-person jury convicted Guru Saraswati guilty of 20 counts of child molestation, after just a short deliberation, on Friday March 4th, 2011 [34]. Western Buddhist monk Dhammadipa

After being trained in a Buddhist monastery [Hemis Gompa, Ladakh] he spread the Buddhist philosophy, survived Jewish persecution in Palestine and crucifixion in the Roman Empire (Israel), and escaped to Kashmir, Afghanistan.

This part of Kashmir is near the birthplace of the Buddha, known as ancient Gandhara in Central Asia, with its capital now in Pakistan (after the 1947 Partition of India).

There he died an old man at the age of 80 [and his corpse was entombed in the Jewish-style with its distinct orientation with Buddhist-style footprints marking his burial site.

That grave is now covered by an Islamic grave it of another person, making excavation difficult without stirring up a great deal of trouble.

Attaining JHANA ("meditative absorption")

The Buddha spoke in praise of jhana ("meditative absorption"). He learned and practiced the jhanas in the first years when he first set out on his quest. He exercised them as his last act before reclining into final nirvana.

He became the Buddha, the "Awakened One," because he stopped wasting time with severe austerities and penances punishing the body (extreme asceticism). Remembering that as a baby (and in many previous existences) he had spontaneously entered jhana under a tree, he realized that the bliss and pleasure (piti) born of jhana was not something to avoid the way he was avoiding hedonistic sense pleasures, which he had practiced to the extreme as a Scythian prince before renouncing.

Jhana overview

This turnaround put him on the path of jhana, or serenity, which stabilized and temporarily purified his mind/heart. Then when he practiced insight -- mindfulness and contemplation -- it suddenly paid off and resulted in his great awakening. In fact, we see that in the sutras or discourses (suttas), the very word "meditation" is jhana and its derivative jhayanti or "meditating."

Cultivation (bhavana) usually gets this English language designation today and more rarely our "field of endeavor or intentional work" (kammatthana, kamma = karma = action) or effort with a particular meditation object or theme. Jhana is fundamental to the Buddha's "gradual training."

Let's get started: First Jhana

When one becomes established in right-concentration or samma-samadhi then the application of right-mindfulness becomes fruitful for the practice of insight meditation (vipassana). Insight meditation without at least access- or neighborhood-concentration -- and, of course, "concentration" is a terrible and misleading translation of samadhi but one we're stuck with for the moment -- is fruitless.

It will not produce insight because we are not able to be with our subtle object(s) of attention in a stable way. Therefore, the Buddha's path in brief is virtue (sila) to make the mind/heart settled and pliable, concentration (samadhi) to temporarily strengthen and purify it, and insight (vipassana) to awaken, liberate, and permanently purify it.

What is the path to the end of suffering?

The problem is the intellect or being too intellectual. Sadhguru does not provide the solution, but Buddhism does. We must get out of our heads and into our hearts to stop hammering things out by mere reasoning and going straight to the heart of the matter by intuitive insight -- direct seeing of things as they really are.
