• CONTEXT: All blue-eyed individuals living today are necessarily descended from one individual. Such a framing must be weighed against the fact that every single human alive today is likely descended from that same individual, as well.

(Snopes) In January 2008, a team of researchers from University of Copenhagen made waves by identifying the specific genetic mutations responsible for blue eyes.

Professor Hans Eiberg from the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, an author on the study, explained the nature of the team's discovery:

"Originally, we all had brown eyes," he said in a news release, "but a genetic mutation…resulted in the creation of a 'switch' which literally 'turned off' the ability to produce brown eyes."

Media coverage focused on a specific aspect of this blue-eye-causing mutation — that it necessarily originated in a single individual, alive 6,000-10,000 years ago, who is responsible for all cases of blue eyes.

In 2017, Business Insider reported that "new research shows that all blue-eyed people share a common ancestor."

In 2020, Unilad reported that "scientists revealed that the genetic mutation [for blue eyes] came from a singular human being all those years ago."

In October 2022, The UK Metro ran a story reporting that "every blue-eyed person on Earth can trace their ancestry back to a single individual who lived between 6,000 and 10,000 years ago."

Each of these articles is based on the same 2008 news release.

Explanation

And while these reports are "factual," their framing plays into misconceptions about genealogical lineages.

That misconception, as Scott Hershberger wrote in Scientific American, is that "humans are all more closely related than we commonly think." In an October 2020 story, Hershberger wrote:

• "Imagine counting all your ancestors as you trace your family tree back in time. In the nth generation before the present, your family tree has 2n slots: two for parents, four for grandparents, eight for great-grandparents, and so on. The number of slots grows exponentially. By the 33rd generation — about 800 to 1,000 years ago — you have more than eight billion of them. That is more than the number of people alive today, and it is certainly a much larger figure than the world population a millennium ago."

This, geneticist Adam Rutherford explained, is because "branches of your family tree don't consistently diverge [but instead] begin to loop back into each other." As a result, "your great-great-great-great-great-grandmother might have also been your great-great-great-great-aunt." More

ABSTRACT

Human/animal cells power miracles.

Sunlight is the most abundant energy source on this planet. However, the ability to convert sunlight into biological energy in the form of adenosine-5'-triphosphate (ATP) is thought to be limited to chlorophyll-containing chloroplasts in photosynthetic organisms. Here we show that mammalian mitochondria can also capture light and synthesize ATP when mixed with a light-capturing metabolite of chlorophyll.

The same metabolite fed to the worm Caenorhabditis elegans leads to increase in ATP synthesis upon light exposure, along with an increase in life span. We further demonstrate the same potential to convert light into energy exists in mammals, as chlorophyll metabolites accumulate in mice, rats and swine when fed a chlorophyll-rich diet.

Results suggest chlorophyll type molecules modulate mitochondrial ATP by catalyzing the reduction of coenzyme Q, a slow step in mitochondrial ATP synthesis. We propose that through consumption of plant chlorophyll pigments, animals, too, are able to derive energy directly from sunlight.

 

INTRODUCTION

Determining how organisms obtain energy from the environment is fundamental to our understanding of life. In nearly all organisms, energy is stored and transported as adenosine-5′-triphosphate (ATP).

In animals, the vast majority of ATP is synthesized in the mitochondria through respiration, a catabolic process. However, plants have co-evolved endosymbiotically to produce chloroplasts, which synthesize light-absorbing chlorophyll molecules that can capture light to use as energy for ATP synthesis.

Light (photons) is the substrate of matter.

Many animals consume this light-absorbing chlorophyll through their diet. Inside the body, chlorophyll is converted into a variety of metabolites (Ferruzzi and Blakeslee, 2007; Ma and Dolphin, 1999) that retain the ability to absorb light in the visible spectrum at wavelengths that can penetrate into animal tissues.

We sought to elucidate the consequences of light absorption by these potential dietary metabolites. We show that dietary metabolites of chlorophyll can enter the circulation, are present in tissues, and can be enriched in the mitochondria.

The bottom line? Maybe we are what we eat.

When incubated with a light-capturing metabolite of chlorophyll, isolated mammalian mitochondria and animal-derived tissues, have higher concentrations of ATP when exposed to light, compared with animal tissues not mixed with the metabolite.

We demonstrate that the same metabolite increases ATP concentrations and extends the median life span of Caenorhabditis elegans, upon light exposure -- supporting the hypothesis that photonic energy capture through dietary-derived metabolites may be an important means of energy regulation in animals.

The presented data are consistent with the hypothesis that metabolites of dietary chlorophyll modulate mitochondrial ATP stores by catalyzing the reduction of coenzyme Q. These findings have implications for our understanding of aging, normal cell function, and life on earth.

"Bigfeet" - Many Hominid Sub-species?

Different sub-species?

Are there different sub-species of Bigfoot [like the Indonesian Orang Pendek at left]? A recent discussion with Arizona cryptozoologist Alex Hearn prompted this query.

I have personally researched hundreds of reports and have observed that there seem to be many variations of these mystery hominids that are reported around North America (in fact, the world).

There are five hair colors that are usually described : brown, black, reddish, blonde, and white or gray. Sometimes the head and body hair is long and shaggy, sometimes uniformly short. Generally, people describe these beings as being massive and muscular, standing 6 to 9 feet tall.

Of course, there are reports of true giants, but there are also smaller, man-sized, even slender creatures. The face is sometimes portrayed as apelike. But more often it is human-like or somewhere in between. They typically walk upright but sometimes go down on all fours. Are we dealing with regional sub-species?

Human-bipedal-primate hybridization would explain the giant yeti or Abominable Snowmen of Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet. These yakshis or rakshasas in Buddhist cosmology, such as the famous Yakkha Alavaka, are well known and share many human traits including speech and language.

The only known authentic footage is called the "Snow Walker" video. It was taken by two Himalayan hikers on a 1992 expedition in Nepal. Yetis are part of mountain lore, particularly among the Sherpas.

The West found this out when British expeditions were trying to get to the top of "Mt. Everest" (Nepalese, Sagarmāthā; Tibetan, Jomolungma, "Holy Mother"; Chinese, Zhūmùlǎngmǎ Fēng, "Jomolungma Peak") more than a century ago. British climbers also saw them.

This famous clip depicts an apelike creature walking on two legs struggling through the snow. But yetis are found across the Himalayan range spanning the world's three highest peaks -- Pakistan's K2, Nepal's Everest, and India's Kangchenjunga (Sikkim).

In Buddhist and older Indian mythology, the yakṣa (Pali, yakkha) has a dual personality. On the one hand, it may refer to an inoffensive nature-fairy, associated with woods and mountains. On the other hand, it may refer to a darker creature, a kind of ogre, malevolent beast, or ghost that haunts the wilderness and waylays and devours travelers, similar to rakṣasas. Yakṣis or yakṣiṇīs (female ogres, possibly related to the word yetis) are regarded as even more vicious than the males, possibly due to their hormonal and instinctive impulses to protect their young. In Buddhist mythology, they are overseen by the spacefaring "Guardian of the Northern Quarter," a beneficent deva. According to the Mahavamsa, Prince Vijaya encountered the royalty of the yakkhas -- red haired giants in Sri Lanka akin to Steve Quayle's "giant" (nephilim) captured recently in Afghanistan's mountains, which are also part of the Himalayan range.
