Sex scandal worsens for guru (video)

(eNNews/) WARNING: Seductive message told through synthetically white teeth: "Don't judge me, and don't clutch."

Wisdom Quarterly's "Ask a Brahmin" resource scans the Indian media. He came upon scandalous Hindi-only reports of Nithyananda's gay sex abuse of a subordinate American employee.

He has not been in jail from the last set of scandals to rock the headlines and disrupt his international empire. The question is, Is he a spiritual fraud, a fake?

No. He has certainly become a fake, but was he always one? There is a more likely explanation: he attained states of concentration (samadhi) and wielded residual psychic abilities for a time, just like Sathya Sai Baba (whom we are assured by at least one devoted Buddhist is still wielding them from beyond). See commentary below.

For anyone who may think this story is beating a dead guru horse, look at the swami's giant ads "selling enlightenment" at the ShambhalaSun.

Guru's gay relations with American man
Translated from "In-glish" and expanded by Wisdom Quarterly
BENGALURU, India - The Daily Bhaskar reports that the CID (Crime Investigation Department) has filed formal charges against self-proclaimed  "godman" Swami Nithyananda in a Ramnagaram court.

He is a young rising New Age star (shown at left in monastic orange) in the US.  He sells bliss via his "Unclutching Technique," claims healing powers, and even offers "enlightenment" for sale.

The CID claims that in addition to two women, Nithyananda also had sexual relations with a male foreigner. He was famously videotaped violating his celibacy vows with a famous actress, which scandalized conservative/oppressive India while titillating US fans with his taste and prowess. The pseudo-swami has a large ashram and Hindu University in Montclair, California.

The American was in Karnataka's Bidadi Ashram. Nithyananda had "unnatural sexual intercourse" with the man across many cities in the US. It is unclear whether it was consensual, a harassing abuse of power, or a relationship.

The charges allege that there is evidence that Nithyananda was embroiled in unnatural sex acts [ssodomy]. Accordingly, the identity of the male foreigner has been kept a secret.

[Rumors suggest it is his first-in-charge in American enterprises, which suggests that it was not consensual and welcome. It is likely to have been, one might speculate, the swami using his charm, so effective with women, on a male employee.]

The CID interrogated the man and taped the conversations, which will be produced as evidence before the court. According to sources, this is the first time in the Nithyananda scandal that a male disciple has come forward to levy charges against the godman.

The complainant, who is in the US currently, alleges that Swami sodomized... More

COMMENTARY
Wisdom Quarterly
Wisdom Quarterly's "Ask a Brahmin" resource scans the Indian media. He came upon scandalous Hindi-only reports of Nithyananda's gay sex abuse of a subordinate American employee. He is a personal acquaintance, and editors have also met Paramahansa Nithyananda numerous times.

He is an engaging speaker who must either have very good ghostwriters or a natural talent for weaving together words, but we have never sensed the magic he claims to possess. One could think he is a scam from the moment one looks at him, but it would be hard to explain the slavishness of his middle aged American female devotees.

While most would have thought the guru in jail or in hiding after his last sex scandal rocked the headlines and disrupted his international empire, money seems to have made those charges go away. Now comes this bombshell.

Not a spiritual fraud?
The question is, Is he a spiritual fraud? No, a more likely explanation is that he attained states of concentration (samadhi) and wielded residual abilities.

They awaken our own "super" human abilities, our natural birthrights found in lore around the world, and was corrupted by it. The meditative absorptions suppress the defilements. They do not eradicate them.

Those taints soon surge up again in the absence of constant practice.

This is why the Buddha did not advocate use of psychic powers (abhinnas, siddhis) for gain, why he did not prompt his disciples to display them, and why he never recommended anyone to be content with them.

Beyond right concentration (samma samadhi) there is right mindfulness (samma sati). Mindfulness of what? Mindfulness in four parts as detailed in the Maha-sati-patthana Sutra (DN 22).

"Sex Swami" lectures on self-restraint

(Mid-Day.com) BANGALORE, India - Swami Nithyananda's disciples were back in their trademark robes on Sunday, which they had abandoned after their guru was arrested when a video that allegedly showed him with a Tamil actress was aired on national television.

The mood at the swami's ashram Dhyanapeetham, where he delivered his discourse following his release, saw disciples who had taken to wearing jeans and T-shirts back to the ashramites' trademark white and saffron robes.

Among other things, Swami Nithyananda, who chose freedom as the topic for his first discourse after he was released on bail, dwelled on principles like non-violence and self-restraint while defining freedom.

"We had to dress casually after Swamiji was arrested. We were afraid that the public would attack us," explained a disciple. "The public was so mistaken that in their eyes, it became a matter of shame to be Swami Nithyananda's disciples. The police were also monitoring us. We did not want to get into trouble. But now with our guru out, we have changed to our old robes." More>>

Holy man resigns over sex scandal

Pārājika (defeat): Rules entailing expulsion from the Sangha
Should any Buddhist ascetic — participating in the training and livelihood of monks, without having renounced the training, without having declared his weakness — engage in sexual intercourse, even with an animal, he is defeated and no longer affiliated.

The Buddhist monastic code is very clear. Other traditions -- say, for example, Catholicism -- are less decisive. There is no excommunication even for homosexually raping multiple children, although advocating for women to become priests is an offense entailing excommunication.

Hinduism is a diffuse amalgamation of schools with no central power structure, which leaves a lot of room for abuse or "independence" when it's most convenient. So it comes as some surprise that outed guru Nithyananda has taken the drastic step of "resigning" from public life. We don't, of course, believe for a minute that he'll be able to stay out of the limelight now that he's been bitten by the twin bugs of fame and money.

India "holy man" resigns over sex scandal
Habib Beary; Edited by Bappa Majumdar (Reuters, Oddly Enough)
BANGALORE, India - Swami Nithyananda, a Hindu holy man with thousands of followers across India [and the US and Europe], resigned as head of a religious organization on Tuesday after police began investigating his role in a sex scandal, officials said.

Video footage allegedly showing the head of Dhyanapeetam, or the knowledge center, frolicking with two women angered hundreds of devotees who tried to ransack his center outside the southern city of Bangalore this month.

The 32-year-old Swami has denied any links to the women and said the tapes were doctored. But the police are investigating and have asked people to come forward with evidence. This month has been particularly bad for India's self-styled holy men with Indian police arresting one for running a brothel involving air stewardesses and college students, while charging another with kidnapping a minor.

Nithyananda, who has big politicians and movie stars as devotees, announced his resignation in a statement. "I have decided to live a life of spiritual seclusion, for some indefinite time...," he said on his website. [Keyword "indefinite," as in "until things die down"].

Nithyananda has spiritual centers in Europe and the United States and Dhyanapeetam runs free medical centers and supplies food to the poor. Source

Yoga: sex scandal, trafficking, regulation

K. Shiva Kumar (ExpressBuzz, India)
Yoga unites people against human trafficking. Over 200 people, including residents at Odanadi — a Mysore-based NGO that works for the welfare and rehabilitation of destitute women and children — and people from all over the world came together on [March 13] to perform yoga in front of the Mysore Palace to create awareness of human trafficking. This unique event "Yoga Stops Trafficking" was organized by Odanadi. It was observed as a "one-day global event" in more than 20 countries including US, UK, Australia, Thailand, and the Netherlands to draw attention to the "evil" of human trafficking that is rampant in India and third-world countries. Sex Swami's PR disaster

  • "I was in samadhi"
(Mar. 15, 2010) The disgraced godman Nithyananda said his sex video was morphed but did not deny it was his image with the actress... Swami, who has been slapped with cases of cheating after the video footage came to light on March 8th, said the video will be sent to experts... "I believe I do not have any lust. One hundred percent, I am sure that I do not have any need for other person," Swami said. He said the video has been misrepresented by an onlooker.
  • Nithyananda: I didn't run away; I was at Kumbh Mela
CHENNAI, India - Even as speculation continues over the whereabouts of Swami Nithyananda, who is at the center of a sex scandal, his lawyer on Friday claimed that the godman had not absconded but was in Varanasi. "He is attending the Kumbh Mela..."
Yoga teachers win fight against state regulation
Alexandra Cheney (DNAinfo, New York)
Yoga teachers may soon have cause to praise Vishnu. Within the next ten days, Governor David Paterson is expected to approve a bill that would exempt yoga teachers from state regulation of their training programs.

The likely exemption comes after almost a year of rallies and protests by yoga instructors to avoid the licensing process. "Small studios don't have the umbrella of large studios and can't even afford licensing procedures to hold teacher trainings," said Caitlin Casella, a yoga teacher and teacher-trainer at YogaWorks.

Paterson has until March 24 to sign the bill, which both the State Assembly and State Senate have approved. The Education Department has also backed the bill, despite the fact that they were part of the initial push for the licensing of yoga teachers. More>>

Ask a Brahmin: "Sex Gurus"? (Part 1)

WQ: Brahmin, as Swami Paramahamsa Nithyananda's personal friend, what can you say about his recent sex scandal?

  • Of course, it's embarrassing. But there's nothing wrong with sex.
WQ: No, but there is something very wrong with hypocrisy.
  • Yes, the ancient Vedas do not have anything good to say about that.
WQ: Nithyananda would have been wiser to be like your hero Osho. Did Osho have sex with his devotees?
  • He never did such things.
WQ: There were allegations, no videotape, but there were allegations.

  • Nithyanand is young. This indiscretion is a great mistake. Does Buddhism believe in sex as a natural thing?
WQ: Buddhism is fine with sex. It makes a distinction between sex and sexual misconduct. Sex is appropriate for independent, consenting adults. If one is not dependent or under the protection of one's parents, relatives, guardians, religious community, a spouse, or the government, then sex is fine. But under no circumstance is sex fine for a Buddhist monk, nun, novice (a monastic in training), an 8-precept holder, or someone in a meditation retreat where one has vowed to abstain from it.
  • We don't know what Nithyanand has vowed.
WQ: We do. He represents himself as a celibate saddhu, advocating celibacy, accepting money and property donations from devotees who believe he is a godma, a self-realized guru. That would be great: Let him be like Shri Rajneesh (Osho) and teach sex, because then he wouldn't be a hypocrite. Could you tell him to come out of hiding and start teaching Tantra, spiritual sexuality, and shaktipat. But to be a hypocrite or a deceiver of many good people wanting an honest teacher...
  • Nithyanand would be wiser to teach like Osho and not be closeted. He has made a mistake.
WQ: He is being accused of more than the one indiscretion caught on video. He is allegedly taking Viagra, drinking, and wasting time watching TV in a luxurious room or hotel by Indian standards. What this is really about is a millionaire and his money.
  • We all need money. His followers understand.
WQ: Sure. Yet his handlers (and his foundations) are worried about losing their cash cow. Look how they circle the wagons and call their lawyers for advice. How can his temples in America stay open? Who would defend a scoundrel?
WQ: I've seen the video. Have you seen the video? The excuse that it's a conspiracy or something taken out of context... Brahmin, please!

  • It's embarrassing. But your yoga is good?
WQ: My yoga is fine. Buddhism has eight limbs in the Noble Eightfold Path leading to enlightenment. Yoga has eight limbs (ashtanga) to the Brahma world, to see God, to abide in the Brahma Viharas. This is the Brahminical teaching now.
  • Yes, Patanjali's Yoga Sutras or aphorisms say there are eight limbs in Raja Yoga.
WQ: One of those limbs is the Restraints (Yamas). A big restraint is brahmacarya (celibacy), literally "the way to Brahma." Nithyananda has clearly attained jhana (dhyana) and is, or was, close to the Brahma World. Why would he fall back?
  • He is only human. Why do you think he fell?
WQ: I'll tell you why. This is ancient, something the Buddha explained to the Brahmins of his day. Jhana, samadhi, Oneness -- none of these is "enlightenment." They merely suppress the defilements. They don't eradicate them. When they fade, all the base impulses -- lust, anger, self-delusion -- are still there.
  • And Buddhism has a better answer?
WQ: It has an answer if you want to reach nirvana, complete liberation. If you just want to be liberated from this world and go to heaven(s), it also an answer like so many traditions do. If you want to be born in celestial worlds (in space), follow the Five Precepts or Eight Precepts. But to be born in the Brahma Worlds, celibacy (brahmacarya) is a prerequisite. If at the time of death lust is completely suppressed and only a latent tendency, enter jhana and you will be born among the brahmas ("gods"). Simply having led a good life, if at the time of death one dies peacefully and unconfused, one is reborn as a deva ("shining one," light being). But living for money made by wrong livelihood (Vanijja Sutra) or as a monastic violating the precepts, that won't have a good result.
  • No one is perfect.
WQ: The Path teaches the way to perfection -- to temporarily purify oneself by right-concentration (samma-samadhi) then to develop liberating-insight (vipassana) based on that temporary purity. It sounds like Nithyananda got to the first step then started selling books and calling himself "enlightened." It's a problem as old as India.
  • Lord Buddha came from India. His parents were Hindus. He was a Hindu.
WQ: There was no "Hinduism." India had every kind of spirituality. Siddhartha (before the great awakening that made him the Buddha, the "Awakened One") was born into Vedic Brahmanism, the corrupted temple religion of priests promoting superstitious beliefs, elaborate rituals, and Catholic-style indulgences.
  • Maybe Nithyanand is following those priests.
[Laughter from everyone]

Sex Guru: Another of his ashrams attacked

Habib Beary (Sakaal Times, March 11, 2010)

BENGALURU, India - The guru's sex scandal continues to grow. As controversial "godman" Swami Nithyananda was slapped with a notice by the Karnataka government for land-related violations, another of his ashrams (in the state of Andhra Pradesh) was vandalized today by locals protesting the Swami's sexual misdemeanors.

Villagers shouted slogans against the [hypocritical guru] and tore down huge cut-outs outside the ashram near Shamshabad airport in Hyderabad, India. They urged the Andhra Pradesh government to take over the ashram.

There was more trouble for the sexy Swami -- who is on the run with his actress lover -- as he was served notice on his ashram near Bidadi for violating the Land Reforms Act. Nithyananda has been missing since his sex video scandal broke last week. Footage shows him in a compromising position with a Tamil actress....On the mysterious death of a Canadian devotee in the ashram, Nithyananda reiterated what was said earlier by the ashram, which was that the death was an accident.

Nithyananda also discounted allegations that young boys were being held captive in the ashram: "Everybody is there willingly. If they want to leave, they are free to leave," he insisted. Home Minister V.S. Acharya said action would be taken against the Swami once police in the state of Tamil Nadu transfer cases filed against him in Chennai.

Both the Home Minister and the Chief Minister, however, expressed regret over the repeated telecast of the sex video. They felt that it did not go well with the country's rich [spiritual] traditions. "It does not adhere to our culture," the Chief Minister said. Source

A Life of Nonviolence

A life of Ahimsa
Gauri Gupta (AsiaOne)
Among the Indian merchants who trickled into the trading port of Singapore back in colonial times were Jains. After WW II they were joined by their families. Since then the community has sunk roots in Singapore, with almost 350 families residing here now. Jains, members of a religious sect that originated in India at the time of the Buddha, follow the philosophy of ahimsa, nonviolence or nonharming, which also guides its very rich followers against materialism while promoting meditation, introspection, and self-realization. Hinduism view of afterlife
A self or soul exists in any being encompassed by various charms and fantasies. The crux of this aspect is that unless or until a soul attains moksha, the soul is entrapped by the endless cycle of life and death. Moksha is the freedom from the cycle of rebirth, unless or until moksha is attained a soul will have to come back to earth again and again. Thus for any soul, freedom will be an illusion and a goal that needs to be achieved.

The bill envisages 33 percent reservation for women in the Parliament and State Assemblies. "The 33 percent reservation bill must be dropped and instead it should be made mandatory for the parties to reserve 20 percent of election tickets for women...."

SEX TAPE: Great Hindu Guru in Bed

Join the cult, spend some money, watch the sex tape, quit in disgust over the fraud. See FULL UNCENSORED VERSION of Nithyananda and actress Ragasudha.

If their lawyers haven't thought of it yet, the Nithyananda cult can start claiming this was all an enlightening wake up call by the omniscient guru to start paying attention to his message. Why not? It might work. People have been more gullible than that. And after all Americans (even Indian-Americans) don't care about sexual indiscretions. Hypocrisy they will not be crazy about. Why not take the approach of Osho (Bhagwan Sri Rajneesh) and actually advocate "sacred" sex? When you claim celibacy, or a vow of poverty, or some higher spiritual morality, you're setting yourself up if all that's underneath is hypocrisy.

The sex itself doesn't bother anyone. It sure doesn't bother (or surprise) the staff at WQ. No one was mad at Bill Clinton, Tiger Woods, or [name the sports figure of your choice] for the SEX. It was the lying, the lack of character, the deception. That's why people get mad. That's why devotees in India vandalize ashrams.

For the Nithyananda's website to imply that this didn't happen -- but is instead only a case of "graphics, conspiracy and rumors" -- puts the cult in a bad position. Here's the video. Anyone can see: It's clearly him. It's clearly sexual. And is that alcohol? What are those pills? Is this how the holy guru spends his off-time, laying around like a pillow prince, watching TV, and being hand fed?

In His Own Words

ABOUT THE FOUNDER - Paramahamsa Nithyananda, "a renowned spiritual master of the modern age," was born in the famous spiritual town of Thiruvannamalai in the Southern part of India, which has been home for several enlightened masters... Swamiji, as his disciples and devotees lovingly call him...

The Guru's Sex Scandal

Seven Jaini (Wisdom Quarterly)

Fraud, self-delusion, hypocrisy, or sexual compulsion -- none of it spells enlightenment.

I've seen the sex video. I've met disgraced guru Nithyananda. I've never been emotionally or spiritually impressed. His message is simple: To get enlightened, get "unclutched," then it'll just happen. (Pay me to show you how). I was writing for Yogi Times magazine when I first reported on him.

He was opening a Vedic temple and university in Los Angeles. He has similar sham-ashrams in Seattle, Oklahoma, Delaware, St. Louis, and Phoenix. I will say this for him. Nithyananda is a compelling public speaker with great anecdotes. He has a gift for weaving entrancing stories into deep sounding, easy to understand yarns. It's almost as if a college-educated American wrote his speeches for him. In any case, it makes listeners feel deep. (Watch a video or two on Wisdom Quarterly to see how he's built a cult following).

But for all that, I would have been more shocked if he had been declared to actually be "enlightened" (by the Buddha's definition). The most shocking thing about this sex video revelation is that the millionaire guru would carelessly blow his riches and well cultivated "holy" reputation.

But the telltale signs were there: the fake looking dental work and whitening, the merchandising, the business side of his spiritual front, his angry/sycophantic followers (not benefiting from working for God incarnate), the blind devotion, the endless book/CD and ticket sales. But to hear Nithyananda tell it, it was convincing.

No don't doubt the young guru attained some level of concentration (samadhi) and the bliss (piti) associated with meditation. How he came to believe that he was holy or finished, that's harder to understand. Even a profound sense of Oneness, which many speak of as similar to a mind-expanding drug experience or a sudden cascade of DMT from the pineal gland, fades away.

Did he really believe his beautiful experience had rooted out the defilements, the wrong views, the corruptions the Buddha pointed out? Absorption (which Hindu's call dharana or samadhi and Buddhists call jhana) only leads to temporary suppression of lust, anger, and delusion.

WQ has yet to interview his corporate headquarters in Los Angeles, an official spokesperson, or a mutual friend who is also a swami. Follow up will come in a future installment of Ask a Brahmin. But this much seems clear: Simply because one feels that it is "enlightenment" does not make it so. Enlightenment (bodhi) is very specific, goes through stages, and it is only in the third stage and beyond that lust is abandoned.

OFFICIAL RESPONSE
This is in response to the defamatory video on Parama-hamsa Nithyananda aired by Sun TV and various other news media since the night of March 2, 2010. At this moment, we feel that a mix of conspiracy, graphics, and rumor are at play in these recent events that have unfolded. We are working on a legal course of action and will come up with updates in due course. In these trying times, we wish to reassure the [many thousands] of devotees and well-wishers whose sentiments have been deeply hurt by this conspiracy. We thank all the devotees and disciples for standing with us during these times. More>>

Holy man's Sex Tape Scandal

Arrests over India holy man sex tape protests

On Wednesday, angry crowds attacked parts of his ashram near Bangalore in Karnataka state. He was not present and police say his whereabouts are unknown. The Nithyananda Mission ashram released a statement branding the video "a mix of conspiracy, graphics, and rumors."

The ashram says it is part of a global movement for meditation and peace. Several prominent Indian politicians have visited Mr. Nithyananda's ashram in the past. More>>

Ahimsa (Jain sutras by Nithyananda)

(LifeBlissFoundation) From the works of the realized master Paramahamsa Nithyananda, this talk describes how ahimsa (nonviolence) is the supreme religion. Establishing oneself in nonviolence is a foundation to establish oneself in truth. Using powerful examples, Nithyananda explores the Jain sutras in a lecture delivered in Los Angeles.

Beyond Desire (Jain sutras by Nithyananda)

(LifeBlissFoundation) In this talk on the Jain sutras, Swami Nithyananda discusses how we bind ourselves with insecurity and desires. Non-possessiveness (aparigraha) is the antidote. When asked to deeply analyze the situation, we see that we cannot enjoy things when we're bound to hold onto them. Non-possessiveness is always discussed after non-violence because only one established in non-violence is able to liberate oneself from possessions. Dropping desires is foolishness, according to Nithyananda, because increasing one's inner space to accommodate them is the real trick.

Meanwhile, the consensus reality says "grab all you can"

You are Consciousness

Paramahamsa Nithyananda is a reputedly enlightened yoga master. In this talk he describes how the outer world is inside the inner. This merging can happen only when one is able to witness and, above all, simply "unclutch" from attachment to body and mind. Until then, one creates a boundary between oneself and the world. Hence one is separated from the whole. Unclutching and witnessing oneself as part of the whole...nothing but consciousness. This talk is from a series of commentaries on the Jain sutras, given in Los Angeles in March 2007.

Meditation Masters: Advice on Enlightenment

Simple Hermit on reaching enlightenment by unlearning

From the works of living enlightened master Paramahamsa Nithyananda. In this clip taken from Shiva Sutras discourse entitled "Discover who you are," Swamiji explains that truly relaxing from the very idea of enlightenment will take you to the experience. In the initial level the inspiration and the thirst for enlightenment is required to bring you to be centered. Once this happens, just relaxing about the very idea of enlightenment liberates you.
