Someday, maybe on June 8th, it will be World Ocean Day. Then people will begin to realize our whole way of life is made possible by the oceans.

Trees give us so much, and we can see them. The ocean with all its plankton, water cycle, and underwater forests gives us more, but we cannot see it.

Corporations pollute, and we clean it up.

We might live on chlorella, spirulina, Irish moss, and seaweed -- nourished by all the salts (minerals) of the earth without knowing it -- yet never think to thank the seas from the sand at the foot of the oceans.

The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) is halfway through. However, the UN Sustainable Development Goals on life below water (SDG14) remains the most underfunded goal.

Sky watchers wanting to see a "once in a blue moon" event should look up on Wednesday night.

The super blue moon spectacle that night will be the third-largest moon that has appeared to date this year — nearing the end of the four-part supermoon series.

Who knew that the phrase “once in a blue moon” had ties to real astronomy? It means "something that happens rarely" — like blue moons (a second full moon in the same month) gracing our skies. That's not so rare, but blue super moon is.

Buddhist Lunar Observance Day (uposatha)

An Uposatha Day is the lunar Buddhist Day of Observance, in existence since before the Buddha's time (600 BCE), being kept to this day by Buddhist practitioners.

The historical Shakyamuni ("Sage of the Scythians") Buddha taught that the Uposatha Day is for "the cleansing of the defiled mind/heart," resulting in inner calm and joy.

On this day, lay and monastic members of the spiritual community (Sangha) intensify their practice, deepen their knowledge, and express communal commitment through millennia-old acts of lay-monastic reciprocity.

On these days, lay Buddhists make a conscious effort to keep Eight Precepts or Ten (rather than the Five Precepts observed every other day of the year). It is a day for practicing the Buddha's Teaching, or Dharma, meditating, studying, hearing the Dharma, staying overnight at a temple or monastic complex.

The Eight Precepts (Pali aṭṭha-sīla or Sanskrit aṣhṭāṇga-śīla) are observed by lay Buddhists on observance days and festivals.

1. I undertake [to observe] the rule to abstain from taking life.
2. I undertake [to observe] the rule to abstain from taking what is not given.
3. I undertake [to observe] the rule to abstain from unchastity.
4. I undertake [to observe] the rule to abstain from false speech.
5. I undertake [to observe] the rule to abstain from consuming intoxicants that occasion heedlessness.
6. I undertake [to observe] the rule to abstain from taking food at the wrong time [before dawn or after noon].
7. I undertake [to observe] the rule to abstain from dancing, music, visiting unsuitable shows, flower adornments, make up, the wearing of ornaments and beautifications.
8. I undertake [to observe] the rule to abstain from tall, high beds and seats.

Coming to the pagoda at the temple complex

These include the five general precepts -- refraining from killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, perjury, intoxicants -- and three more specific ones. The Ten Precepts divides one of these into two and adds not handling money (gold and silver).

This tradition of keeping the Eight Precepts for observance days is still widely practice in all Theravada Buddhist countries and communities worldwide, as they follow the teachings of the historical Buddha.

This weekly observance is based on pre-Buddhist wandering ascetic (sāmaṇa, shramana) practices (Pali uposatha or posaha, Sanskrit upavasatha or poṣadha). In this context the vows are one-day precepts.

They are considered an excellent support for meditation (calm and insight) practices and are often observed when staying in monasteries or temples.

In some periods (such as retreats) and places (such as temples), the precepts were widely observed, as was the case in 7th–10th-century China by government officials [1].

Under threat: Venice needs to save its future

(DW) Built on ten million log posts, small islands, and mud banks, Venice, Italy, is slowly sinking. More than ever, the "Pearl of the Adriatic" is under threat. Having recently been hit by its most severe floods and with a state of emergency declared, what is being done to save it and its priceless art?

Well over 1,000 years ago the first wooden huts were built out on the middle of a lagoon -- marshland -- off the coast of northern Italy. The archives tell us these were the homes of people fleeing barbarian invasions in the aftermath of the collapse of the Roman Empire.

Later, with land in short supply, human-made areas were developed. But construction was far from easy; the bed of the lagoon consisted of sediment and mud, forming a foundation that was constantly moving and sinking. Yet, Venetian architects managed to build the city’s palaces, towers, and Catholic/pagan cathedrals.

Venice stands on a forest of wooden piles -- 10,000,000 in all -- which anchor the buildings to the lagoon’s muddy bed. The buildings themselves are constructed in such a way that they can compensate for movement, even earth tremors, without suffering noticeable damage. 

But the water the Venetians built their city on is becoming more and more of a threat.

Industrialization has played its part in disturbing the natural balance of the lagoon: The sea bed has subsided and the effect of the tides has changed, resulting in a water level in the city’s canals that is 24 centimeters higher than when they were first built.

Add to that the controversial presence in the lagoon of giant cruise ships: a source of income for the city, but also one that contributes to atmospheric pollution, as well as causing wake (water rise) damage.

The 50,000-year-old, perfectly preserved forest is showcased like never before in a newly released documentary.

Some 50,000 years ago, Earth was experiencing an ice age. Sea levels had dropped precipitously, and the Alabama coastline stretched over 10 miles farther out to sea than it does today.

Thick cypress forests covered a swampy valley in places that are now covered in over 60 feet of seawater.

It's difficult to imagine, but there's one place where the remnants of these ancient forests still exist like tangible ghosts, where deep below the surface, cypress trunks peek out of the sediment and fish congregate like fairies.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Sea levels on Earth are rising several times faster than they have in the past 2,800 years and are accelerating because of man-made global warming [i.e., climate chaos brought on by human pollution and geo-engineering], according to new studies.

There are worse "floods" than sea-level rise, bu destroying a planet is no small thing.

Warming oceans are dying and rising, as storms erode beaches (telegraph.co.uk).

 

Manipulating coral genes?

An international team of scientists dug into two dozen locations across the globe to chart gently rising and falling seas over centuries and millennia. Until the 1880s and the [European] world's industrialization, the fastest seas rose was about 1 to 1.5 inches (3 to 4 centimeters) a century, plus or minus a bit. During that time global sea level really didn't get much higher or lower than 3 inches above or below the 2,000-year average.

  

But in the 20th century the world's seas rose 5.5 inches (14 cm). Since 1993 the rate has soared to a foot per century (30 cm).

And two different studies published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, said by 2100 that the world's oceans will rise between 11 to 52 inches (28 to 131 cm), depending on how much heat-trapping gas [most notably the meat-producing industry that clear cut forests for grazing by methane-producing animals that are then slaughtered in ways that produce further erosion of the environment, the oil industry and fracking companies that degrade the environment on an industrial scale, and coal companies that remove mountain tops and leave behind open pits that erode away and spread deadly toxins] Earth's industries and vehicles expel.
