(DW News) Buddhist monks arrested in Sri Lanka for smuggling an s-load of cannabis weed (potent "kush") that would have likely addicted many Sri Lankan youths had they not been caught and stopped at the border, the international airport (BIA) in Colombo.

First, in defense of these Buddhist monastics, it is important to note that they (most) were not "monks" (bhikkhus) but rather novices (trainees, samaneras) during a probationary period that can last years as they learn and put into practice the Buddhist Monastic Code (Vinaya and Patimokkha).

Second, of all the rules to break, drug dealing cannabis -- as horrific and condemnable as it is -- is not the worst thing they could have done. The four worst things they could have done are "defeat" (parijika) offenses: killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying about spiritual attainments. Or they might have committed one of the five heinous acts (anantarika-karma, deeds that bear bitter fruit in the very next life):

1. killing one's mother (matricide)
2. killing one's father (patricide)
3. killing an arhat (arahant, fully enlightened being)
4. Wounding a Tathāgata (a buddha, silent or teaching)
5. Creating a schism in the Monastic Community (Sangha).

We stayed behind in the monastery sweeping.

Third, there are no more excuses or consoling statements to be made. They each had about 5 kilograms or 11 U.S. pounds (110 kg or 242 lbs in total). This is no accident but sounds like a cynical abuse of the high esteem in which monastics are held to smuggle drugs, likely for sale and distribution rather than recreational or medicinal use. Novices (samaneras) have very strict rules to live by, beyond what is expected of all Theravada Buddhists.

Did the "businessman" sponsor put them up to it to gain financially, and will they say they knew nothing about it?

There are Five Precepts all Theravada lay Buddhists vow to maintain:

1. abstain from killing
2. abstain from stealing
3. abstain from sexual misconduct
4. abstain from lying
5. abstain from intoxicants that occasion heedlessness.

The very minimum precepts for monks-in-training (samaneras or "baby samanas") are the Eight Precepts or Ten Precepts, abstaining from harming, taking what is not given or handling "gold and silver" (money), sex (all erotic activity), lying, intoxicants, eating before dawn or after noon, using high and luxurious seats or beds, dancing, singing, self-beautification, viewing lowbrow entertainments and shows...

If one were to follow the major rules and the minor (etiquette) rules, it would never come to this unless, as we say, they were cynically used by the businessman drug kingpin as "mules" to unknowingly transport drugs into the very uptight and traditional island Buddhist country of Sri Lanka (Ceylon, Serendib) with a sizeable Tamil Hindu population and significant number of Muslims and Christians.

Let's get one thing straight. Breast size doesn't matter at all, not a bit. They affect nothing, certainly not attention, stares, tips, comments, date requests, marriage proposals, catcalls, jeers, backaches, or popularity. There is no Boobie Industrial Complex (fashions, bikinis, braziers, stuffing, silicone cups, tape, wires, pulleys, wonder pills, creams, exercises, surgical augmentations, lingerie sales, saline implants, Erin Brockovich rentals...) supporting them. It's only a myth! Discovery's Mythbusters conducted a scientific test.

There is a worldwide boob industry worth billions in annual sales for everything from beer to bras, bikinis to cars, self-esteem to plastic surgery, magazines, ad nauseum (si.com).

Dukkha is a terrible thing, so terrible it sent the young, handsome Prince Siddhartha out of Central Asia into India to "find himself," to discover an "end to suffering. The solution to the problem of suffering can only be understood and appreciated by understanding how serious and deep the problem is. That is exactly what we will not ordinarily do.

But when suffering gets so bad, it is possible that we might actually listen and open internally to what we fear. The Buddha gave the problem and solution in the form of an ancient Indian physician, according to the ancient medical model of the day:

1. There is a problem: diagnosis
2. There is a cause: etiology
3. There is (or is not) a solution: prognosis
4. There is a course of treatment: prescription

Ahh, nirvana transcends it all!

The problem is disappointment, the inability to be fulfilled by anything. There is a cause, craving (supported by delusion and aversion). There is a solution to this peculiar disease (nirvana, the end of all suffering, rebirth, and craving or the beginning of all peace, ease, and fulfillment). There is a course of treatment, a prescribed set of eight factors (known as the ennobling or enlightening Eightfold Path). You have just learned a deeper meaning of The Four Noble Truths.

How to be happy

How can I be happy and satisfied?

So the practical upshot of this is, If Emily Ratajkowski (pronounced radi-cow-ski) is not happy -- with all of her fame, riches, youth, beauty, and influence -- how are we going to be? Well, there is a way, a Middle Way. Emily will lose all five. They are already dwindling away. We will lose them. So what can we keep? Enlightenment is permanent.

Nirvana is the supreme realization

Inquire within.

Nirvana -- being neither a place, "thing," nor nothingness -- is unending. It is called the Unconditioned Element because, unlike all of the conditioned (composite) things we are familiar with, it alone is different. At one time the Buddha (then only a Bodhisattva) asked, If I [all the transitory things that  are clung to as "self"] am impermanent, unsatisfactory, and impersonal, why do I chase after things that are also impermanent, unsatisfactory, and impersonal? It would be better to go after something higher, something lasting, something liberating. He found it when he became enlightened and thereby came to be called the "Awakened One."

The Shaolin Temple, founded in the fifth century, has been the key element in hundreds of movies and TV shows: “Kids From Shaolin,” “American Shaolin,” “The 36th Chamber of Shaolin,” “Shaolin Soccer” -- and now “Shaolin,” a new movie starring Jackie Chan and Andy Lau that debuted Friday on video-on-demand.

All are based on the martial-arts practices of the Buddhist monastery -- a special brand of kung fu that combines physicality and Buddhist spirituality and is, according to the Shaolin Temple’s Web site, “based on a belief in the supernatural power of Buddhism.”

“Most people don’t realize kung fu is internal and external, a peaceful and a martial application, and a Shaolin movie will include both... “Shaolin is all about spirituality, karma, your well-being,” adds Doris Pfardrescher of Well Go USA, which is distributing “Shaolin.” All other martial-arts films are “ just about action, fighting,” she adds, “but Shaolin is about religion, spirituality, being with Buddha.” More

A team led by Dr. Alexander Huppertz, director of the Imaging Science Institute at Berlin's Charite hospital and medical school, discovered a detailed stone carving that differs from the external stucco face when they performed a computed tomography, or CT, scan on the bust. The differences between the faces, though slight — creases at the corners of the mouth, a bump on the nose of the stone version underneath — suggest to Dr. Alexander Huppertz a makeover. Huppertz, director of the Imaging Science Institute at Berlin's Charite hospital and medical school, believes someone expressly ordered the adjustments (the makeover) between stone and stucco. This would have been done when royal sculptors immortalized the wife of Pharaoh Akhenaten 3,300 years ago (AP/Radiological Society of North America).
