Eco-Womanism and Animals on Zoom (2/26)

Rev. William Melton (Vegan Spirituality Meetup), Candace Laughinghouse, Chicago Theological Seminary; Ananda (Dharma Buddhist Meditation), Ashley Wells (ed.), Wisdom Quarterly
CompassionConsortium.org welcomes Professor Candace Laughinghouse

Eco-Womanism and Animal Rights

This service includes immersive spiritual practices — musical reflection, meditation, prayer, loving-kindness — as well as a spiritual conversation with special guest (compassionconsortium.org).
If God demands a sacrifice, behead them?
On Feb. 26, 2023, at 4:00 pm ET, the Compassion Consortium will present its special spiritual guest Professor of Theology Candace Laughinghouse, a doctoral (Ph.D.) candidate in theology and ethics at the Chicago Theological Seminary, in the forefront of eco-womanism theology, changing the conversation about animal rights in theological and religious circles.
Prof. Laughinghouse is the mother of three young girls. Growing up in Oakland, California, Prof. Laughinghouse was raised in the folds of the Pentecostal tradition, in a church started by her great-grandfather. Her grandfather and father were both pastors, her stepfather a preacher, and one of her passions is challenging patriarchy within the Protestant church.

In her first theology class at Emory University, she began to study women in Black Pentecostal churches and womanism. Soon after, an advisor suggested she look at the religious concept of the “breath of life” (animus, prana) in animals. She realized that a womanist theology could be used to challenge all forms of oppression, including that of animals.

She decided to switch her focus. Finding that the majority of scholars writing about animal rights from a theological perspective were white men, she decided to chart her own path, bringing her unique voice as an African American woman to the subject of animals in religious theory.

“Womanism is about using your own experience to bring a voice to the voiceless,” she explains.

Drawing on her ancestry, Laughinghouse looks at animal rights from a framework of African and indigenous worldviews, incorporating principles of ecology founded in the interconnection of humanity, nature, and spirit.

Her unique approach sees caring for the earth and for animals as both a religious and feminist activity. By fighting against the oppression of animals, she says, we are fighting all forms of oppression. And by caring for animals, we are caring for all of creation, including ourselves.

For Laughinghouse, this includes keeping a vegan diet: “If I’m going to be connected with nature, that involves the food that I eat.”

Standing at the intersection of so many schools of thought, Laughinghouse often finds herself an outlying voice in her communities: a womanist and vegan in theology circles, a woman of color in animal circles, and an animal advocate in Pentecostal and African American circles.

ABOUT ECO-WOMANISM THEOLOGY
Ecowomanism (Ecology and Justice Series)
Eco-womanism is a manifesto, an ‘overt naming of earth justice as a primary component of womanist concern and analysis [which] is something new.’

Ecology has sometimes been dismissed as a white issue and ecofeminism as a white feminist concern. Author Melanie Harris disagrees.

While social justice issues are at the forefront in communities of color that have suffered historical and ongoing racism enforced by violence, Black people live in a world sustained by nature: If nature is destroyed, there will be no world in which to create justice.

Communities of color are more likely to suffer the effects of ecological degradation, living and working near toxic dumps and toxic chemical plants, drinking poisoned water, and breathing poisoned air.

Black people have an agriculturally based relationship to the land that dates back to slavery and continues up to the present day.

Africans and the African diaspora [those who left Africa into the rest of the world] have inherited worldviews that celebrate the interconnection and interdependence of Spirit, nature, and people.

Finally, Black women have felt and theorized the connection between the degradation of Black women’s bodies and the degradation of the earth by dominant white men and their cultures. More

Hippies who time travel: Damanhur (video)

Night Terrors; Dhr. Seven, Amber Larson (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Live like an "ascetic" and you'll understand.
May 11, 2017: The Damanhur cult [of Italy] reveals they have unlocked the secret of time travel. The "Time Project" leader warns travel to the recent past is not safe, because it might adversely change current events. It is safer to travel deep into history.

Thirty miles from the home of the Shroud of Turin, the tiny, sleepy Italian village of Baldissero Canavese was able to keep secret for 15 years the underground location of the commune of Damanhur. At the foothills of the Alps underneath an innocent-looking suburban home in Northern Italy, hundreds of hippies are living in a paradise under the earth.

"Stop police brutality" - for once and all
The Damanhur Federation was founded by Oberto Airaudi and his 24 disciples, named after the Egyptian city that hosted a temple dedicated to Horus the sky god, represented as a man with the head of a falcon. Airaudi also went by the name of "Falco" or the Hawk, based on the tradition of the cult that members adopt animal names. According to Falco this all started when he was a ten year-old child. He had visions of a great Temple filled with people living together harmoniously. As a man he had a successful career as an insurance agent, when in the back yard of his home on a hot August night, Oberto told his believers he was waiting for a sign. A falling star streaked across the sky. He said to his friends, "We start digging now."

They used only hand tools -- hammers and picks. Beginning in 1978 and working around the clock, for the next 15 years these laymen carved out an underground complex with no architectural plan, except for the sketches made by Falco. It now descends five stories into the earth in a giant series of chambers connected by hundreds of yards of tunnels. One room is a four-sided pyramid covered in mirrors with a glass dome. The ceiling of a room called, "The Hall of Spheres" is covered entirely in gold leaf. Other ceilings, walls and floors are done in intricate mosaic murals.

Very early on, the collective of Damanhur also was involved in other new age projects. They believe that plants can sing, and they developed equipment to allow humans to hear the melody. One probe is attached to a leaf. Another probe is inserted in the soil between the roots. Electric conductivity is measured and a converter assigns musical notes to the electrical impulses.

The underground Temples became public knowledge when a former member sued to regain his possessions from the group. Italian police and the public prosecutor came knocking at the front door in 1993, demanding to be shown the subterranean temples -- which were constructed without a single building permit. "Otherwise," they warned, "we will dynamite your hillside." Falco replied, "Your threats are unnecessary," and he led authorities through the secret door to the complex. The officals were dumbstruck by expansive vaults 25 feet in height. Worldwide headlines helped the Damanhur Federation to turn their commune into a tourist attraction. The government declared the sanctuary to be The 8th Wonder of the Modern World.

The cult revealed that in 1997 they unlocked the secret of time travel. "Time Project" leader, Gnomo Orzo, says it is safer to travel deep into history than it is to travel to the recent past, which might adversely change current events. Orzo confirms the device is a machine. Its purpose is to channel and magnify a person's own psychic energy.

The current population of the neo-hippy commune is between seven and eight hundred souls. They have their own schools. They issue their own currency, the Credito, equal to the value of the Euro. They invented their own sacred language. But they no longer hide anything. They welcome visitors, and they welcome new citizens.

Citizenship
There are different classes of citizenship at Damanhur. The "Class C" citizen is not required to live on site. Class B citizens contribute money and must live there at least three days a week. Class A citizens share all personal property with the commune and live on site full-time. Only the Class A citizens are eligible to make use of the time machine.

The Awareness Film Festival (May 3-6)

AwarenessFestival.org; Wisdom Quarterly
"2012: Time for Change" was one of the many progressive films that debuted at the Awareness Festival in past years. See the 2012 selections.

The Awareness Film Festival (May 3-6) is a special annual cinematic event that promotes awareness of today’s issues through the timeless art of filmmaking.

A fusion of filmmakers, artists, environmentalists, educators, alternative health practitioners, and industry professionals, the Awareness Film Festival aims to inspire the public to make the world a better place through this uniquely engaging and entertaining annual event in the film capital of the world, Los Angeles.
() BACK TO EDEN shows that after years of back breaking toil in ground ravaged by the effects of man-made growing systems, Paul Gautschi discovered a taste of what "God" [the extraterrestrials who terraformed Earth, tilted the planet to give it seasons, set its main artificial satellite in place, and genetically manipulated its creatures as well as saving them from time to time] intended for humankind in the Garden of Eden, [the original ecological paradise the ETs set up]. Modern agricultural issued faced today include soil preparation, fertilization, irrigation, weed control, pest control, crop rotation, and PH issues. None of these issues exist in the unaltered state of nature or in Paul's gardens and orchards. "Back to Eden" invites us to take a walk with Paul as he teaches you sustainable organic growing methods that are capable of being implemented in diverse climates.

The festival is an annual fundraiser that benefits the non-profit organization Heal One World. This LA-based foundation offers alternative treatments to low-income and underserved demographics.

Heal One World seeks to educate people about preventative healthcare, non-traditional/complementary modalities, natural non-invasive treatments and self-help techniques for the body, mind, and soul [the unseen spirit aspects of the self that express motivation and purpose].

EGYPT: THE STORY BEHIND THE REVOLUTION tries to tell the story of how the impossible happened [as if an 18-day citizens' uprising caused the downfall of a despot friendly to the West rather than the West betraying a puppet dictator it propped up, supported, and abandoned when it was convenient to do so]. Filmed primarily in Egypt in March 2011, soon after the January revolution, this film introduces Egyptians who lived under Mubarak and helped to bring him down. Included are interviews with many young revolutionaries fighting for a new Egypt. Activists explain their reasons for taking to the streets to call for freedom and reforms asking for Mubarak's resignation.

Film categories include: green and eco-friendly living, alternative fuels, veterans’ issues, animal awareness, political topics, preserving nature, alternative healing options, stories of hope, healthcare issues, the arts, spirituality, and much more. More

Re-Thinking Progress: Circular Economy (video)

Molly X, Wisdom Quarterly
It's better to be circular like the universe than linear like America's disposable culture

LABOR DAY, 2011 - It is better to live in an intentional community like Eco-Village, Los Angeles, than to buy-use-throw away everything in our lives. This mentality is dangerous to our health, the well being of the planet and has destroyed the economy. It is a corporate means of extraction, pulling money out of consumers who are encouraged to go into debt for the attempted satisfaction of desires ad campaigns seed and water. If we wake up to the unsustainability of this hamster wheel (aka "rat race"), we just might be able to pull ourselves and others out of the mire. It is better than holding our collective breathe waiting to exhale in the hopes that Obama is suddenly going to grow a backbone and reject the corporations that (s)elected him. The same holds true for our health and our garden... and the "meditation practice" we call life. Next time try a green job.

How Severn Suzuki Saved the World

(Severn Suzuki) In 1992, at the age of 12, Severn Suzuki raised money with members of ECO, to attend the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Along with fellow ECO (Environmental Children's Organization) group members Michelle Quigg, Vanessa Suttie, and Morgan Geisler, Suzuki presented environmental issues from a youth perspective at the summit, where she delivered an impassioned and articulate speech to delegates.

(Teens' Speech) Severn's video has nearly two million views on YouTube and is popularly known as "The Girl Who Silenced the World for 5 Minutes." I'd never seen the video before -- clearly coming to it rather late. It's not like the Teens' Speech film, which is a visual poem, documentary in style, but artistic at heart. It's also serious, because it's time we took young people seriously.
