Best song of 2025: Artemas 'Kiss'

It was a contentious year, with many votes for Kenya Grace's "Strangers," which would have won had it not been for the fact that it came out earlier and only broke through later. LIVE / BBC

Funky Buddha's Oktoberfest? Alcohol

Hey, where your tutu is, Desi? - Hey, where's your llama, Dolly? - AH HA HA HA!
.
Budai brand beer?
Imagine a place so crass that it exploits the Buddha's image to promote beer and hard liquor, drunkenness and carelessness, negligence and unskillful karma. Let's call the place "Buddha Bar." No, that's taken. Let's call it Funky Buddha. Open it on the dangling participle of the country (Sandy Schlong Beach, Florida).

Let's invite the Dalai Lama, who says he's all about laughing it up, and tell him to bring his freaky friends like the ghost of Archbishop Desmond Tutu. We can hold a skimpy BBC (Buddha Bikini Contest) with a large purse and a slow reveal that begins with the wet tee-shirt phase.

Yo yo yo, how we feeling out there tonight!?
DJ Buddhahed can spin the turntables with EDM and hip-hop beats pleasing to all. Fight through protesters and picketers to get in there and, BAM, we've got ourselves a party. Well, no need for imagination because a company called Funky Buddha beat us to it: funkybuddha.com with BuddhaFest MarZen

Alan Watts, Zen monks stole swigs of saké on Cloud Mountain, while their whereabouts were unknown? No, that was Taoists. And it wasn't saki, the water of life, but ambrosia.
SUTRA: To Sujata (Sigalovada)

Doesn't booze make the writer?
(DN 16) Thus I have heard. One time, the Buddha was staying on Vulture's Peak (Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa in Rājagṛha), Rajgir. He was accompanied by a large assembly of 1,250 monastics.

It was then that the Buddha (the Blessed One, the Bhagavān) put on his outer robe and took his bowl into the city for alms. At the time, there was a prominent man’s son named Sujata in Rajgir. Early in the morning, he went out of the city to go for a walk in the park. He bathed, wetting his entire body. He then bowed in all the directions: east, west, south, north, above, and below.

The Buddha saw Sujata getting wet [as a mark of respect] then bowing in the directions. Seeing this, the Buddha went over to Sujata and asked: “Why did you leave the city in the early morning to go to a park, wet your entire body, and bow in the directions?”

Sujata explained to the Buddha, “My father’s death is imminent, and he gave me this instruction: ‘When you go to bow, you should first bow to the east, south, west, north, above, and below.’ I dare not neglect to carry out my father’s instruction, so after I’ve bathed, I first saluted while facing east then bowed to the east. I do this for all the cardinal directions -- south, west, north, above, and below.”

The Buddha then told Sujata, “These 'directions' are only names. We, too, have this practice, but we do not bow to the directions to pay respect to them in this noble teaching [enlightening Dharma].”

Sujata then said to the Buddha, “Please, Blessed One, it would be good if one were to explain the way it is done in the noble Teaching!”

The Buddha said, “Listen closely, listen closely! Consider it well, for I will explain this.”

Sujata replied, “Very well. I am glad to hear it.”

DUI with loaded gun and salsa: Welcome to TX
The Buddha taught: “Suppose one knows of four unskillful actions, and the grounds for their being unskillful, so one avoids them and is able to know the six actions that squander wealth.

“That is to say, Sujata, one abandons four unskillful actions and pays homage to the six directions. It will be good for the present life, and one will obtain good results in later lives.

“It will be the source for this in the present life and later lives. In the present life, one is commended by the wise and gains this one worldly reward: When the body breaks up and life ends, one will be reborn in a good place.

“Sujata, you should know, those four bad actions are: 1. killing, 2. stealing, 3. sexual misconduct, and 4. false speech. These are the four bad actions.

“What are the four grounds for these bad actions? They are: 1. desire, 2. anger, 3. fear, and 4. delusion.

“If one does unskillful actions on these four grounds, then one will decline.”

After saying this, the Buddha restated it in verse:

“Desire, anger, fear, delusion:
Those who harbor these four
See their reputation dwindle away
As the waning moon does day by day.”

The Buddha further told Sujata, “If one avoids these unskillful actions on these four grounds, then one will improve.”

The Buddha then restated this in verse:

“One who avoids unskillful actions
Done out of desire, anger, fear, or delusion
Will see improvement day by day
As the waxing moon steady gains.”

What happened to all our money, Brian? - This.
“The Buddha further told Sujata, “The six actions that squander wealth are:
  1. indulging in alcohol
  2. gambling
  3. self-indulgence
  4. getting carried away at musical performances
  5. associating with bad friends and
  6. idleness.
“These are the six acts that squander wealth.

“Sujata, suppose one understands these four actions, avoids these unskillful actions done on these four grounds, and knows the six actions that squander wealth.

“Doing this, Sujata, one can abandon these four grounds and make offerings to the six directions. It will be good for the present life and good in later lives. It will be the source for this in the present life and in later lives. In the present, one will be praised by the wise and gain this one worldly reward: When one's body breaks up and life ends, one will be reborn in a good place.

Defects of drinking
Go on. I'm listening. I only imbibe to drink the pain away. You got a better way?
.
Wine, women, and song! Why stop now?
“Sujata, know that drinking alcohol has six defects: 1. loss of wealth, 2. becoming ill, 3. fighting, 4. circulation of a bad reputation, 5. sudden outbursts of anger, and 6. a daily loss in wisdom. Sujata, if they drink alcohol, their family and property with decrease day by day. ...

Then Sujata exclaimed: “...The Buddha is a Wayfarer (Tathāgata), Luminary (Arhat), and a Supremely Awakened One, so he is able to reveal to the world clear instructions. Now, I go for guidance to the Buddha, go for guidance to the Dharma, and go for guidance to the Saṅgha.

How will I ever be able to stop?
“Blessed One, please permit me to become a lay follower in the true Teaching! Starting today, I will avoid killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, and drinking alcohol for the rest of my life.”

Having heard what the Buddha taught, Sujata rejoiced and approved of it.

Getting to know next VP Tim or JD (TDS)

Will Republicans cower out or debate?
Another Trump administration circus? WE AREN'T GOING BACK! - Tim and Kami's 1st rally
.
I would, I would, I want to...but...
(Scripps News Staff, 8/6/24) Now that both Kamala Devi and Don John have chosen their running mates for the 2024 presidential election, one big question remains:

Will the Republicans muster the guts to debate?

DJ is too scared and making excuses, and JD is making excuses even as he says he's not scared of hillbilly Tim.

While a potential presidential debate is still up in the air — with DJ and HD failing to come to an agreement — a vice-presidential debate does appear somewhat more likely at the moment.

Republican VP nominee JD said today (8/6/24) at a campaign event that he will debate HD running mate Tim, but not until something else happens first. WAIT! Let us guess. Delays, delays:
  • Dang, we already lost! We had it! Now we lose
Dems have to stop calling the GOP "weird"
  • Everyone needs to apologize and say JD did not dry hump that sofa
  • Tim and Devi need to agree to a bunch of conditions
  • The moderator must be a FOX News staffer or Tucker or Megyn
  • They have to agree to let JD go first and to have the last word
  • They have to resurrect G-Joe and promise that DJ will get to debate him again because Dems might pull another switcheroo and put him back at the head of the ticket...?
"I absolutely want to debate Tim Walz [someday, in some universe, just not necessarily this one]," Vance claims. "BUT I want to debate him after he's actually officially the nominee."

JD went on to say that he called Tim to congratulate him on being named Harris' VP pick but speculated that the top of the Democratic ticket could still be changed. "Would it shock me if the Democrats pulled another switcheroo? No, it wouldn't," JD said.

"So look [I'm not making excuses or trying to chicken out or buying myself some more prep time], we're going to wait until they actually nominate Kamala Harris and Tim Walz before we [JD and DJ] do any debates."
On Monday night, the Democratic National Party (the donkeys or the dumbos?) announced that 99% of pledged and automatic delegates voted for Harris to be the Democratic nominee for president. [Who was she running against? No one. So what happened to that last percentage point? Is Putin running this poll?]

MAGA disciples are voting "Felon" for 2024? The lesser of two evils is the felon? Could be.
(Jordan Klepper) Democrats may have become warmongers and the party of the CIA, but to a man, DINOs and Dems are just much funnier and smarter. Exhibit A: Klepper runs circles MAGAots.

The vote still needs to be certified [ratified, conducted in public, voted on, made legitimate by having a rival, or any number of other legitimizing factors] before Harris or Walz would be the official 2024 presidential ticket

I can do it, Hon. - Speak when you're spoken to!
Prior to moving to the top of the ticket, HD had agreed to a VP debate on Aug. 13th, but JD had not confirmed his appearance, so it remains to be seen when and if a VP debate will take place.

[Oh, JD, man up. She's a woman, and now you have a man to go up against, or have your wife do it in your place. Stop being weird; stop saying sexist things.]

Fifty years later, hip-hop is a multi-billion-dollar global industry, but the Bronx has yet to benefit. (Aug. 9) (AP Video/Noreen Nasir) More: apnews.com. The Birth of Hip Hop
(Black History in Two Minutes or so) 11/6/20: In 1973, DJ Kool Herc set up his turntables and introduced a technique at a South Bronx house party that would change music as many people knew it. His ability to switch from record to record — as well as isolate and repeat music breaks — led to the discovery of the hip hop genre. From school yards to gatherings, boomboxes housed the exhilarating sound that people couldn’t get enough of. Soon, freestyling over the beat became popular, and we’d have one of the most noted songs of the genre released in 1979, entitled “Rapper’s Delight.” As the genre evolved, artists used their platform to speak on social issues near and far. These lyrics became the melody that told the narrative of the artist’s world to a beat.

Hosted by Henry Louis Gates Jr., with additional commentary from author Joan Morgan, Jelani Cobb of Columbia University, rapper Nas, and filmmaker Ava Duvernay, we celebrate an underground cultural movement that has unified people and has become the most streamed genre of present day.

LA Radio: Bean leaving KROQ (video)

HollywoodReporter.com; Seth Auberon, Pat Macpherson, Wisdom Quarterly
(Eddie Vedder) Gene "Bean" Baxter has long been phoning it in from Seattle.

It took 30 years but The Kevin & Bean Show is finally falling apart with the firing of Lisa May, the dumping of comic Ralph Garman, and now the departure of Bean. The biggest dagger in the corpse of the show has been the addition of show-killer Ally Mac Kay, but no one tell her that. The show has enough problems without her.

(FOX 11) Funnyman Ralph Garman explains his forced exit

Gene "Bean" and wife Donna Baxter
Baxter, who has hosted the show alongside Kevin Ryder since it launched in 1989, made the surprise announcement this (Wednesday) morning at 7:00 am.

[Autistic or on the spectrum] Gene "Bean" Baxter is leaving KROQ's morning show Kevin & Bean after 30 years.

He tweeted the news, explaining his decision to depart: "Just announced on the @KevinAndBean Show, after 30 years I am leaving the show at the end of the year to move back home to England, the ninth largest island in the world. Much more to come on this."
On the air he noted that he is a British citizen, having been born there, and visits England quite often given he has [alleged] friends and family there. He said he's been mulling this decision over with his Latina wife, fashion designer Donna Baxter, for years, and decided it was the right time to make the move.

(KROQ) More talent has come out of this show -- from Jimmy Kimmel to Adam Corolla to Mike Catherwood -- than seems to go in. Kevin & Bean are the least famous.

He added that Luke Perry's death Monday at age 52 [youthful compared to crotchety ol' Bean, estimated to be in his 60s or 70s, who may look worse for donating his kidney] from a massive stroke was a wake-up call.

"It's another reminder that tomorrow is not guaranteed for anybody, and we have been talking about moving to Europe for years," he said. "But at what point are we going to do it? It can't always be a spot on the horizon. When you're young and healthy enough to enjoy it, you can't put off things that you've been looking forward to in life forever."

Baxter indicated that he'll be looking for a radio gig in the U.K., adding that he believes "the odds are stacked against me because of my age and my dumb American accent." He added that he felt that "30 years makes sense to me." More

Terra Nova Sinfonia Antarctica: DJ Spooky

(SubliminalSpooky) This is a trailer for DJ Spooky (Paul D. Miller)'s new large scale multimedia performance work (now being performed): It is an acoustic portrait of the rapidly changing Antarctic continent. "Terra Nova: Sinfonia Antarctica" transforms Miller's first person encounter with the harsh, dynamic landscape into multimedia portraits with music composed from the different geographies that make up that land mass.

Miller's field recordings from a portable studio -- set up to capture the acoustic qualities of Antarctic ice forms -- reflect a changing and even vanishing environment under duress. Coupled with visual material from Getty Images' vast collection, Terra Nova: Sinfonia Antarctica is a 70 minute performance, creating a unique and powerful moment around the human relationship with nature.

Nazis; Madonna in Israel; Bush joins "Today"

SHIAO LIN, Taiwan – The Dalai Lama exhorted Taiwan on Monday to safeguard its democracy, interspersing prayers for the victims of Typhoon Morakot with a challenge to Communist China. The call from the Tibetan spiritual leader appeared to contradict assurances that his five-day visit to comfort the victims of the worst storm to hit the island in 50 years would steer clear of the political — a concern for President Ma Ying-jeou's administration, which is seeking closer ties with the mainland.
